Why Houston Will Win

Few teams have to go through a bigger overhaul than Baylor. There’s a new coaching staff, nine new starters on defense, and a whole lot of tuning up to do without any chance to do it.

Meanwhile, Houston has been preparing for this moment for the better part of the last 11 months, when it all but shut things down after a rough start to use the rest of the 2019 season as one big tune-up. The passing game is going to be Big 12-dangerous, the offensive line is good enough, and 16 of the top 17 tacklers are back on a defense that went through the growing pains.

The energy level from the Cougars should be tremendous, but …

Why Baylor Will Win

Can this Cougar team actually play?

It’s one thing to use a season get a slew of young parts the experience to grow into their respective jobs, and it’s another to actually do something with all of that work.

The Houston defense still has to prove it’s better than the one that gave up 44 points or more in three of the last four games. Yes, Baylor is going through a bit of an overhaul, but new head coach Dave Aranda was a fantastic get for the program, the offense should be steady – and occasionally sensational – and the defense shouldn’t fall off too much, if at all.

What’s Going To Happen

Wow, does the Big 12 really, really, really need this win.

Houston will be more effective from the start. It’s going to be sharper right away with a good first few drives to establish the tempo, but Baylor will settle in as the game goes on before taking over early in the second half.

It’s going to be a fight, but the Bears will capitalize on a few key Cougar turnovers to survive at home.

SMU (1-0) vs North Texas (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why SMU Will Win

The passing game was rusty in the 31-24 win over Texas State, but it should work just fine against the North Texas secondary.

Granted, Houston Baptist QB Bailey Zappe ripped up Texas Tech, too, but he warmed up in a 57-31 loss to North Texas with 480 passing yards and three touchdowns, having no problems getting time to throw with little pressure from the Mean Green defensive front.

Mustang QB Shane Buechele won’t have any problems hitting the 300-yard mark, TJ McDaniel should push for another 100-yard rushing day, and the offense will get to 500 yards as long as it’s a whole lot sharper early on than it was against Texas State, because …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

Why North Texas Will Win

It took way too much work to put away an inferior team.

SMU came up with a ton of yards and it got the win, but there were too many stalls and it was 21-21 late in the third before finally getting some breathing room.

It might have been against Houston Baptist, but North Texas showed signs that the offensive issues of 2019 might be over. Jason Bean and the passing game rolled from the start, and the ground attack ripped off big run after big run averaging over seven yards per carry.

The UNT offensive front isn’t anything amazing, but it should hold its own against the SMU defensive line that’s going to struggle all year against the run.

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

The SMU-Texas State game was going to be a shootout, and it wasn’t.

This one should be a blast.

The North Texas offense will keep pressing, the SMU offense won’t ever be able to rest, and both passing games will hit big play after big play. Expect well over 1,000 yards of total offense with SMU being a bit more effective when it has to be.

Syracuse (0-1) vs Pitt (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Syracuse Will Win

Oh sure, the Pitt offense worked against Austin Peay, but now it has to go against a much, much stronger secondary and better defense overall.

The 31-6 loss to North Carolina might not look great on the scoreboard, but Syracuse hung tough for three quarters before buckling in the fourth. It wasn’t a sharp effort in any way by the Orange offense that looked like it needed a game of prep work.

It’s possible this is a far stronger attack this week – QB Tommy DeVito wasn’t quite on the same page with his receivers in key moments.

Even so, again, it was a battle for 45 minutes with the secondary keeping QB Sam Howell and his great receiving corps from rolling until late. However …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

Why Pitt Will Win

The North Carolina defensive front spent most of the game wearing DeVito as a hat.

The Syracuse offensive line was awful last year in pass protection, and it did next to nothing against the Tar Heels allowing seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and generating just 68 rushing yards.

Syracuse, meet the pass rush that was the best in the nation in 2019 and is still very, very good.

Pitt didn’t exactly pull punches in the 55-0 win over Austin Peay, but up 42-0 at halftime the D didn’t show all it could do. It came up with three sack snd eight tackles for loss, but it seemed like it was saving itself.

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse will be a bit better than it was against North Carolina, and it still won’t be enough.

No, the Pitt offense isn’t going to roll up six touchdowns in the first half, and it’s not going to hold the Orange rushing game to 1 net yard – both happened against Austin Peay – but the defense will take over in key situations, will finish with at least five sacks, and it’ll look the part of a team that should be a sleeper throughout the 2020 ACC chase.

Boston College (0-0) vs Duke (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Boston College Will Win

New head coach Jeff Hafley should be able to do wonders right away with a defense that struggled throughout last season. The Eagles are loaded with experience and veteran tacklers, and it all starts with what should be a whale of a linebacking corps.

The Eagle linebackers aren’t necessarily better than Notre Dame’s, but the 1-2 tackling punch of Max Richardson and John Lamot can hang with anyone in America. Duke’s running game didn’t work in the 27-13 loss to the Fighting Irish, finishing with just 73 yards with most of those coming from one big dash by QB Chase Brice.

The BC defense is going to make Brice throw, but …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devil defense wasn’t bad, and it should be able to slow down the Boston College offense, too.

Notre Dame wasn’t exactly sharp, but Duke’s D had something to do with that thanks to a decent pass rush, a big game from star CB Mark Gilbert – back in the mix after missing last year – and just enough stops to stay in the game.

This is a BC team in need of a tune-up for an offense that has to get the timing down with new starting QB Phil Jurkovec – a transfer from Notre Dame – being thrown into the fire against this solid Blue Devil D. However …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Boston College offensive line is good enough to take over as the game goes on.

Conditioning will be a factor, but the Eagles have the experience to be a whole lot better on both sides of the ball. This will be a relatively low-scoring grind of a game without a whole lot of big plays.

It’ll be fun, close, and will come down to who can take over late. It’ll be the Eagles.

Notre Dame (1-0) vs USF (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why USF Will Win

Can the running game possibly keep this up?

New head coach Jeff Scott stepped in, and the Bull ground attack instantly started to work, running for 302 yards and two scores in the 27-6 win over The Citadel with big gash after big gash.

USF was 4-0 last season when running for 200 yards or more, and as a program has won 27 straight when coming up with 205 yards or more.

Notre Dame isn’t The Citadel, but the offensive line was able to get on the move last week with a good tempo, the running backs ripped off big run after big run, and it has a shot to keep the Irish on their heels if they can be as sharp as they were to open things up. However …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Notre Dame defensive front that stuffed Duke for 73 rushing yards – allowing fewer than three yards per carry – has the linebacking corps to keep the big runs to a minimum.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was a dominant force against the Blue Devils, and while star safety Kyle Hamilton is banged up with an ankle injury, this is still a group that’s not going to get toughed like The Citadel was.

Even with all of the success against an FCS team, the Bulls had a hard time putting the game away. The passing game won’t be able to stretch the field on the Notre Dame secondary, and scoring points will be like pulling teeth to close out drives.

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

USF will be okay, but the Irish will be sharper.

The Bull offense will come up with a few of the big runs that Duke wasn’t able to, but it won’t be enough as Ian Book and the Notre Dame attack gets out to a better start than it did last week. USF will have to throw in the second half, and it won’t work.

Miami (1-0) vs Louisville (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

Well hello, Miami running game.

It was the best day by a Hurricane ground attack in six years – at least, against another FBS team – when it rumbled over the UAB defense for 337 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-14 win.

Louisville’s defense held firm against WKU in a 35-21 victory, but the defensive front is about to get plowed on by a suddenly physical Miami offensive front that did a nice job of opening up gaps for Cam’Ron Harris – 134 yards and two scores – and new QB D’Eriq King.

The Canes didn’t exactly open it up as much as it ground down the Blazers with big run after big run, but …

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals are about to push the Miami secondary.

UAB couldn’t get its running game going, but before getting hurt, QB Tyler Johnston was able to keep things moving enough to keep the team in the game.

Against WKU, Louisville’s Micale Cunningham was in midseason form, throwing for 343 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 24 rushing yards and a score.

It’s rare that D’Eriq King isn’t the most dynamic quarterback on the field, but Cunningham was outstanding at pushing the offense deep. If Miami’s pass rush doesn’t generate more pressure than it did against UAB, there’s going to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much better is the Louisville run defense than it was last year?

Cunningham and the offense will have a hard time getting going consistently enough to overcome the Miami running game that will keep it all going after its win last Thursday. It won’t get to 300 yards again, but it’ll push past 200 as it comes up with another win after taking down the Cardinals 52-17 last year.

King and Cunningham will emerge from the national showcase game as two of the biggest stars of the 2020 season.

UCF (0-0) vs Georgia Tech (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UCF Will Win

UCF might be missing a slew of parts overall who opted out, but this is still a loaded team with with a whole bunch of really, really good receivers who can stretch the field and be a lot more effective than anything Florida State was able to do.

Give Georgia Tech credit for keeping the quick-hitting FSU passing game from going anywhere – allowing just 4.4 yards per pass – but QB Dillon Gabriel and this offense should hit whole lot of big plays. The UCF defense is going to be terrific again, too, but …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Georgia Tech offense might have the ball for 59 of the 60 minutes.

UCF scores quickly, but it also … well, scores quickly.

It held the ball for just over 26 minutes a game last season, which was fine, but that might be a problem when conditioning has been one of the biggest keys to the early part of the season.

Georgia Tech lost the time of possession battle last week, and it’s not like the Paul Johnson days when the offense could keep the offense on the field all game long. However, the O that hit 50% of its third down tries against the Seminoles needs to keep that going, and the D needs to take the ball away three times again.

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

UCF will start fast, be great, and then will hit a wall.

The Knights are going to be gassed halfway through the third quarter, and that’s when Georgia Tech will take over with two good scoring drives.

It won’t be enough. UCF will recharge just enough to come up with a much-needed, momentum-changing touchdown in the fourth to get out of Atlanta with a strong win.

North Carolina (1-0) vs. Charlotte (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Charlotte Will Win

Ben DeLuca is back.

The fantastic 49er safety who missed most of last year came up with a big stop to stall an Appalachian State touchdown in last week’s 35-20 loss, but he’s not alone. He might have led the way with 16 tackles, but the defense came up with a whole slew of big hits, forcing three fumbles.

North Carolina might have beaten Syracuse 31-6, but the offense needed a while to get going. Syracuse had plenty of chances to get in the game and make it interesting, but the timing was off, there were too many misfires, and the Tar Heels were able to get through the rough patches to pull away late.

Charlotte has to keep forcing mistakes, capitalize on everything, and be sharp from the start. However …

Why North Carolina Will Win

Charlotte’s starting quarterback Chris Reynolds is out with what’s being called an upper body injury. The offense and passing game struggled with him, and now the 49ers have to try generating even more of a running game.

Northern Illinois transfer Tre Harbison was strong in his debut, but the offense side isn’t the issue.

North Carolina, gear up that ground game.

Sam Howell and the passing attack get all of the headlines, but after Appalachian State rumbled for over 300 yards with good run after good run it’s time for Michael Carter and Javonte Williams to have some fun.

What’s Going To Happen

Call the slow start by North Carolina a case of working out the kinks. Howell will start out better, the running game will average well over five yards per carry, and the Tar Heels will have this locked up by halftime.
