Army (1-0) vs ULM (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why ULM Will Win

ULM will score.

If that doesn’t sound like much, ask Middle Tennessee after it was blanked by Army 42-0.

The offense doesn’t have Caleb Evans around anymore at quarterback, but the receiving corps is full of guys who can stretch the field with a good uptempo attack that knows how to spread things out.

The linebacking corps has just enough speed and athleticism to keep with the Army runners on the outside, but …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Army Will Win

ULM doesn’t do that defense thing all that well.

It’s run defense was an issue throughout last season – giving up 200 yards or more in 11 of the 12 games – including a 254-yard, four-touchdown day in a 51-29 loss to Georgia Southern and its option attack.

Army was razor-sharp last week with the offense looking in midseason form, hitting Middle Tennessee for 340 yards and five touchdowns as it controlled the game throughout.

The Knights had the ball for well over 35 minutes, including a 99-yard scoring drive that took over 12 minutes. Expect a whole lot of long, grinding, effective marches.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be as ugly as the Middle Tennessee game, but Army will do enough to own the game after an entertaining first half. ULM will get a few points to keep the Knights pushing.

USF (0-0) vs. Citadel (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Citadel Will Win

The nation’s 114th ranked run defense in 2019 had better be a whole lot better in a hurry.

USF struggled against just about everyone’s ground attack, allowing well over 200 yards per game and two touchdowns or more eight times. This group can move, and there’s enough experience to be better, but they all have to be ready for the dangerous option attack that averaged 268 yards per game on the ground and was great at hitting the big pass play.

The Citadel brings back ten starters including senior QB Brandon Rainey, who led the team with 900 rushing yards and 17 scores.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why USF Will Win

New head coach Jeff Scott has a whole lot of good parts returning, and it starts with what should be a much-improved offense.

The veterans are there, starting in the backfield with a good rotation of runners to keep feeding the ball. The offensive line was miserable last season, but at least it returns experienced.

On the defensive side, USF has to come up with third down stops, and it has to get the D off the field. If The Citadel holds the ball for close to 36 minutes – like it averaged per game last year – there’s going to be a problem. Stall the Bulldog attack, and the Power Five program’s offense can take over.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

USF is going to be in for a fight.

The Citadel’s offense has a way of taking over games and forcing teams to adapt to its style – it was enough to beat Georgia Tech last year. However, Scott will get a win in his first game as the active and athletic linebackers do just enough on third downs, and the offensive side does its part to keep the chains moving.

It’ll be tough, but the Bulls will hold on.

Georgia Southern (0-0) vs Campbell (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Campbell Will Win

The Camels have an interesting offense.

The running game is good, the attack gets back three starters up front, and sophomore Hajj-Malik Williams is one of the best all-around quarterbacks in the FCS. He led the team with 664 rushing yards and nine scores, and he threw for over 2,000 yards for a deep attack with plenty of other options.

Georgia Southern might have the big ground game coming into this, but Campbell should flirt with the 200-yard rushing mark.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can Campbell stop the run? If last year was any indication, nope.

The Camels were 114th in the FCS in run defense allowing 236 yards per game and 5.5 yards per carry. They return seven starters including two linebackers, but only one starter is back on the defensive front.

This is a veteran Georgia Southern offensive backfield that knows what it’s doing. If the option is working from the start, it’s going to take control of the tempo. It’s a deep group of runners around QB Shai Wertz – the Eagle ground game will keep coming in waves.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

The Campbell offense will be good enough to put some points on the board, and LB Justice Galloway-Velazquez and the defense will come up with a few early stops. It won’t be nearly enough as the Eagles get on a roll on the way to over 300 rushing yards.

Kansas State (0-0) vs Arkansas State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves weren’t bad in the 37-24 loss to Memphis in the opener. They got in a little bit of work, the passing game was fine, and they provided a push against a team that made it into the New Year’s Six last year.

ASU has a strong enough passing game to be a problem for a revamped Kansas State secondary that won’t get a whole lot of help from an okay pass rush. Wyatt Hubert is a terrific playmaker in the backfield, but the Red Wolves should have time to work.

Expect more than 400 yards of total ASU offense.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Kansas State Will Win

Memphis isn’t exactly known as a program for its ability to milk the clock – it wasn’t bad last year in time of possession, but its game is more about speed and big plays. It was able to hold the ball for over 34 minutes against Arkansas State.

The Red Wolves like to operate quickly with a fast tempo, and while it all usually works, they never have the ball – they were 113th in the nation last year in time of possession.

The Kansas State program for years and years and years has lived off of control. Last year’s team was ninth in the nation and first in the Big 12 in time of possession, and against ASU it should have the ball for at least 35 minutes.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Time of possession, turnover margin – ASU gave it away three times against Memphis – and doing the little things right. Kansas State will overcome a sluggish overall offensive performance by always keeping the game plays at the level it likes.

This is the game to get the revamped offensive line in sync, and it’s not always going to be pretty. However, the Wildcats will go on enough long marches to do what they must to get the win, even if they won’t ever get comfortable.

West Virginia (0-0) vs. Eastern Kentucky (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Eastern Kentucky Will Win

Making lemonade time out of a 59-0 loss – Eastern Kentucky got a game under its belt to work out the kinks.

There wasn’t any luck defensively against Marshall – and the offense couldn’t get anything going – but this is a far better team than it showed in Huntington.

The hope has to be for the West Virginia offense that struggled throughout last year – to be kind to the Big 12’s worst O – to need a little while to get the offensive front going, and it has to hope for the running game that did next to nothing to continue to sputter.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why West Virginia Will Win

This should be a much, much better Mountaineer team than last year’s version.

The defense shouldn’t have any problems with a Colonel offense that managed just 166 total yards and three first downs against the Thundering Herd – the defensive front will live behind the EKU line – but it’ll be the offense that wakes up.

QB Jarret Doege will push the ball down the field to stretch things out a bit – this was a big, big problem last year – and there really will be a ground game after only coming up with more than 100 yards twice.

West Virginia will run for over 200 yards for the first time in the last 17 games.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Again, Eastern Kentucky is better than whatever that was that showed up against Marshall – but it’s not going to show it against West Virginia.

It’ll take a few drives for the Mountaineers to look like a whole new team under head coach Neal Brown in his second year. It might be against an FCS team, but after struggling so much throughout last season – and after going 5-12 in the last 17 games – the West Virginia fans will enjoy the moment.

Kansas (0-0) vs Coastal Carolina (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

How did Coastal Carolina pull off the 12-7 win over the Jayhawks last year in Lawrence? It got more physical than the Power Five program.

The Chanticleers were miserable at moving the chains, but they were able to slow things down and pound away for a tough 172 yards while holding the ball for almost 35 minutes. Now they get four starters back on the line to provide a push for star RB CJ Marable – who ran for 148 yards and a score.

They didn’t turn the ball over, were +2 in turnover margin, and Kansas couldn’t do much of anything after taking an early 7-0 lead.

And this year’s Coastal Carolina team is better.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Kansas Will Win

The skill talent is good enough to be far more explosive and far more effective than last year’s version.

RB Pooka Williams is the star of the show, but the receivers are there, too, with three of the top four targets returning. Coastal Carolina DE Tarron Jackson is magnificent, but the overall pass rush shouldn’t be enough to bother the Jayhawk backfield.

Defensively, KU has an okay secondary, and head coach Les Miles has been able to improve the talent over the last year, but …

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Really, how healthy is Kansas? There was reportedly a COVID-19 breakout on the football team, but a spokesman said the team should be fine and ready to go.

This is a dangerous Coastal Carolina team with a strong enough starting 22 to be a problem. Kansas will find more offense than it showed in last year’s loss, and motivation won’t be a problem.

It won’t be pretty, and it won’t be easy, but the Jayhawks will pull this out helped by a few takeaways it wasn’t able to generate last year.

Why Houston Baptist Will Win

Just how quickly did Texas Tech tweak and improve the defense that finished 127th in the nation? It gets back a whole lot of experience and main tacklers, but they didn’t exactly produce, especially in the secondary.

The Red Raiders allowed over 300 yards per game through the air, and now get to go against Houston Baptist QB Bailey Zappe, who hit North Texas for 480 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 57-31 loss. The passing attack is in place to keep up the pace in a shootout, but …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Texas Tech passing game will fire at will.

It took North Texas a little while to get going, but the offense finished with 721 yards with big play after big play. There won’t be any problems pounding  away with the running game, but this is all about Alan Bowman getting back into a groove.

When the sophomore quarterback gets hot, he’s as dangerous as any passer in the Big 12. Between a shoulder injury last year and a collapsed lung as a true freshman, he’s had a rough time. now he and Maverick McIvor will get to have their fun against a secondary that allowed three UNT passers combine for 361 yards and four scores.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Houston Baptist put up a ton of yards and plenty of points last week against North Texas, but a whole lot of both came in the fourth quarter when the game was well in hand.

Texas Tech will go off early, have this put away by halftime, and then will give up a few yards late to make the stats look bad. The Red Raider offense will be phenomenal.

Oklahoma (0-0) vs. Missouri State (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Missouri State Will Win

Bobby Petrino – yeah, that Bobby Petrino – takes over a Missouri State team that could use a little tweaking after a 1-10 season. So what do the Bears have for Oklahoma to worry about?

The offensive line is experienced and has enough size to at least bring a little bit of a push, and the receiving tandem of Damoriea Vick and Lorenzo Thomas isn’t bad.

Oklahoma is breaking in a new starting quarterback, the running back situation is a massive question mark with a rotation of backs looking to get going after losing top backs Trey Sermon (Ohio State) and Kennedy Brooks (opting out). But …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This is about as much of a scrimmage as it gets as the Sooners give Spencer Rattler his shot to give the offense a run. There might be several question marks across OU, but the receiving corps is going to be a killer right away.

Yeah, not having the main running backs around will be a problem at some point, and the lines aren’t going to be smooth early on, but this is the tune-up. Missouri State is breaking in several key parts, too, and even with Petrino taking over there won’t be a whole lot of offensive efficiency.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma will be able to call its shot. Rattler will put up almost flawless numbers, all the running backs will take turns ripping off big runs, and this will be over within the first few minutes.

Why Austin Peay Will Win

The Governors have a game under their belt. They might have lost to Central Arkansas, but they were able to fight back late to take the lead, only to give it right back in the final seconds.

QB Jeremiah Oatsvall was beaten up, but he was able to ball out enough to keep fighting to get the team in a position to win. The defense was able to keep the UCA offense under check until the final drive, with a run defense that should be terrific as the season goes on.

This is an improved Pitt team, but the offense still has to prove it can produce after scoring the fewest points for the program since 1996. However …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Pitt Will Win

Austin Peay, welcome to the Pitt defensive front.

Star DT Jaylen Twyman might have opted out, but the defensive end tandem of Rashad Weaver and Patrick Jones should live in the Governor backfield. The No. 1 sacking team in college football last year should be every bit as nasty against a line that wasn’t a rock against Central Arkansas is about to be in for a long day.

Offensively, welcome to the Mark Whipple era. The new offensive coordinator should be able to get the passing game going.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

The Panthers will use this game to get the offense going.

Last year they needed to work way, way too hard to get by the lone FCS game against Delaware in a 17-14 win, but the offense will be just a bit crisper right out of the gate.

It won’t be perfect, but the defense will take care of things to prevent any drama.

Louisville (0-0) vs. WKU (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Louisville Will Win

Can the WKU offense keep up the pace?

It was a great season for the Hilltoppers, but it only scored more than 28 points three times and was under the mark in eight games. There might be a new quarterback, but the rest of the WKU offense should be fine. Fine probably doesn’t get it done against this Louisville attack.

The Cardinal running game is flashy and productive, and the receivers are right up there with the best in the ACC. 28 points might not get it done to hang around with this group. However …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why WKU Will Win

The Hilltopper defense might be good enough to keep that Cardinal O in relative check.

13 of the top 15 tacklers are back around All-America one-man-wrecking-crew DeAngelo Malone on one end. As good as Louisville was last season, the offensive line was a pass protection disaster, even with new New York Jet Mekhi Becton anchoring one side.

The pressure from the front is good enough to help another terrific secondary that should win its share of battles against the Cardinal receivers.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a frustrating day for Louisville, who won 38-21 last year.

The offense will get going early, but it’ll stall too often against the WKU defense that should be strong on third downs and should get to QB Micale Cunningham enough to be annoying.

However, the Cardinals will step it up late to pull away. It’ll be a good first victory against a team strong enough to be in the Conference USA championship mix.
