Los Angeles Rams at Minnesota Game Preview

Why Los Angeles Rams Will Win

The offense has kicked it all back in.

The Rams might have struggled a bit and sputtered for a while on a three-game losing streak, but they got it all back with a three-game winning run with the ground game rolling again and with the turnovers slowing to a dead stop.

They gave it up seven times in the three losses, and just once in the three wins.

Minnesota still has the dangerous passing game to deal with – even if it didn’t rip up the Bears like it should have – but it won’t have Dalvin Cook to handle the workload. The star is out with COVID, and now the Vikings have to try to be balanced against a Ram defense that hasn’t allowed 100 yards in three of the last four games.

There won’t be a whole slew of big, gashing runs.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Minnesota Will Win

Minnesota isn’t going to be held to 61 passing yards this week.

The win over Chicago was weird. The Vikings didn’t take any big chances, they relied on their running game and the takeaways from the D, and they got out with a win.

But the dangerous passing attack is about to come back strong.

The Ram defense has been better overall after a mediocre first part of the season, but it’s still giving up passing yards to the stronger attacks. Kyler Murray bombed away, and so did Aaron Rodgers, and Kirk Cousins is about to do the same.

Alexander Mattison isn’t Dalvin Cook, but he’ll be strong enough to add a little bit to the ground game. Justin Jefferson, though, should be in for a huge game, and …

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Be shocked if Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp don’t go off.

They do that in every game, but they should put on a fun show against a Viking defense that gives up big plays down the field and will allow over 200 yards getting off the bus.

It’ll be a back-and-forth shootout with both teams trading big punches. The Rams will land a few more in a close, fun game.

Buffalo at New England Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The defense is going to take this personally.

After all of the drama on the field and in the media room following Buffalo’s 14-10 loss to the Patriots in Week 13 – getting hammered on for 222 rushing yards – the D will dare Mac Jones to keep the offense moving.

The Bills haven’t been a rock defensively against the better offensive teams, but New England is more about control than pop and explosion. There might have been a few big dashes against Buffalo the first time around, but that was an aberration.

Jones will have a problem hitting the big plays, the Bills will load up to keep the run from dominating, and owning third downs is a must – they’re great at that on both sides of the ball.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why New England Will Win

Everyone says it wants to bust New England out of its style, but it’s just about impossible to do it.

Indianapolis was able to get the job done last week in its 27-17 win, but that’s partly because Jonathan Taylor and the ground game rolled for 226 yards. Buffalo is running well enough to get by – Devin Singletary had a nice day against Carolina – but the backs don’t do enough.

The Patriots will give up yards, but they don’t often break after they bend.

You want to challenge Mac Jones? He’s been able to come through time and again, and now he’s coming off a subpar performance. He rallied the team back against the Colts after a rocky start, and now the plays should be there with the Bills certain to load up against the run.

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

New England will get the job done again.

Buffalo might try to slow down the run, but New England will mix it up enough in the first half to get the ground attack going in the second.

Josh Allen and the Bill offense will get off to a hot start, but it won’t last. Slow and steady will win the race as the Patriots control the time of possession and the tempo.

New York Giants at Philadelphia Game Preview

Why New York Giants Will Win

Defense, let’s get this going. It’s on you.

The two teams played in Week 12 – a 13-7 Giant win – with New York forcing four takeaways to overcome a big day from the Eagle running game.

The Giants continue to struggle offensively, and they’ve got a huge problem in the red zone when they’ve got a shot at turning games around. Philadelphia doesn’t have a big turnover issue, but it’s way too inconsistent.

Defensively, Philadelphia just doesn’t take the ball away.

It has just two multi-turnover games and just one over the last three games. The Giants have to keep the clock moving, make this a low-scoring battle, and hope to catch a break because …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Philadelphia Will Win

Jake Fromm is getting the call.

Daniel Jones is done for the season, and Mike Glennon obviously isn’t the answer. There might be a rotation, but it’s Fromm’s game to run – he has hit just 6-of-12 throws for 82 yards.

He’s a problem, but the run defense is a bigger one.

The Giants not only got rolled by the Philadelphia running game, but they got hit by the Chargers and Cowboys for big yards, too. The Eagles now lead the NFL in rushing, rushing scores, and attempts. They’re going to control the game and make Fromm press.

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Take a guess and what Philadelphia will do.

The running game will get going early, the pass rush will bother Fromm from the second quarter on, and this will be a workmanlike game as Jalen Hurts and the offense start to take over in the second half.

It won’t be as easy as Eagles fans might like – head coach Nick Sirianni is questioanblewith COVID issues – but it’ll be a big deal to keep playoff hopes alive.

Jacksonville at New York Jets Game Preview

Why Jacksonville Will Win

If the offense was ever going to work, this would be the time.

The Jaguars didn’t exactly bust out in the first game of the post-Urban Meyer era – losing 30-16 to the lowly Houston Texans – but there weren’t any turnovers for the first time in weeks, the running game wasn’t bad and the run defense did a nice job.

The Jets aren’t giving up a ton of passing yards, but the deep plays are there. Trevor Lawrence, it’s time to start making big things happen down the field. However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why New York Jets Will Win

If the offense was ever going to work, this would be the time … sort of.

The Jets were only able to come up with 228 yards of total offense in the loss to Miami – it’s dead last in the NFL in both points and yards. In this, it might be more about the opportunities than cranking up the attack and taking a ton of chances.

The Jaguars just don’t take the ball away. They came up with one big play against Houston, but that was an anomaly. They’ve forced just four takeaways in 13 of the 14 games – the three takeaway game against Buffalo was the only time the D forced multiple mistakes – and the Jets have been careful lately.

They’re still there – there was one last week against Miami – but there hasn’t been a multi-turnover game since Week 10 against Buffalo.

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are having issues with COVID and injuries – Jacksonville’s problems should be a bit more of a problem.

The Jets are missing head coach Robert Saleh, but the Jaguars will miss top pass rusher Josh Allen. The New York receiving corps isn’t a full go, but the ground game and defense will be okay against a punchless team that won’t be able to get the breaks needed late.

All of the CFN NFL Predictions

Tampa Bay at Carolina Game Preview

Why Tampa Bay Will Win

You think Tampa Bay will be a wee bit jacked up to make amends for the 9-0 loss to New Orleans?

The passing game stalled, the ground game didn’t help enough, and the -2 turnover margin turned out to matter. The ground game might help out a bit.

It won’t be the Leonard Fournette show, but Ronald Jones should be fresh enough to pick up the slack. There’s no Chris Godwin, but the rest of the passing game parts should be okay.

Defensively, it was lost in the clunker to New Orleans that the Buccaneer defense allowed just over 200 yards of offense. The run defense should be able to contain Cam Newton, and there won’t be enough of a Panther passing attack to make up for it.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Carolina Will Win

Carolina might just have the defensive chops to repeat the New Orleans hex on the Buccaneers.

The secondary is among the best in the NFL. It allowed fewer than 200 yards in seven of its last eight games and could take advantage of a Tampa Bay team looking to press a bit.

Offensively, the ground game has to take over right away. The Tampa Bay defense allowed well over 100 yards on the ground in three straight games before stuffing New Orleans, and for all of its problems, Carolina should be able to grind a bit.

However …

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

There’s just no rhythm to the Panther attack.

Tom Brady will throw two early touchdown passes, and then the defense will do the rest. Carolina will hang around, but two turnovers will blow everything wide open in the second half.

The two teams will mead two weeks from now, but neither one will hold back the playbook. It’s statement time for Brady after last week’s debacle.

Los Angeles Chargers at Houston Game Preview

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Get up fast and don’t mess around.

The Texans don’t have a whole lot of firepower – and have even less with WR Brandin Cooks likely out with COVID – and there’s no running game to worry about.

Turnovers might be a problem for the Chargers, but they’ll be balanced, there won’t be a whole lot of chances taken early on, and the running game will go off.

Justin Herbert will be Justin Herbert when needed, but the mix of running backs will control things against a Texan D that got a week off against Jacksonville, but was hammered on a regular basis against defensive ground attacks before that .

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Houston Will Win

Davis Mills just isn’t that bad.

The world sees the lack of results and blows off that he has next to nothing to work with. Even so, he’s doing a nice job with the passing game – over 500 yards in the last two weeks – and he took advantage of just about every opportunity in last week’s win over Jacksonville.

The Chargers have stiffened up against the run over the last several games, and Houston won’t do much. However, the LA pass D got hit with over 400 yards against Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City, and it gave up 250 yards or more in four of the last six games.

Mills can’t be afraid of making a big mistake. He has to keep pushing the Charger defense that will eventually break, but …

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The Chargers will be too balanced and too efficient early on.

Keenan Allen will keep his momentum going after a solid month – missed time due to COVID aside – and the rotation of backs will combine for 150 rushing yards. Houston won’t have the ability to keep up.

Chicago at Seattle Game Preview

Why Chicago Will Win

The defense stepped it up against the Vikings.

The team might have been short-handed in the secondary – and will be again at various parts – but the pass defense was terrific against Kirk Cousins and the offense found just enough of a spark to be interesting.

Yes, Nick Foles is getting the start, but he’s a decent veteran who can hit the midrange throws if the ground attack is helping him out. Seattles has the worst pass defense in the NFL, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Seattle Will Win

Nick Foles is the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback. Things aren’t going well.

Both Justin Fields and Andy Dalton are hurt, and now the offense has to turn to Foles to try salvaging something out of the season. That’s just part of the problem.

The Seattle offense might not be humming, but the ground attack is coming up with enough big yards to matter. It ripped through Houston, was great against San Francisco, and it should do well against the Bear defensive front without heart-and-soul DT Akiem Hicks – he’s on the COVID list.

That means …

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Seattle will start running just to try controlling the game, then the downfield passing attack should start to work after finding a spark at times over the last few weeks.

The Bears won’t be a total pushover. The running game will be good, Foles will be okay, and the defense will hold up against the mediocre Seahawk offense enough to make this a game.

Pittsburgh at Kansas City Game Preview

Why Pittsburgh Will Win

It’s possible to run on the Chiefs, but you have to commit to it.

The Chargers might have lost, but they almost hit the 200-yard mark on the ground. Denver lost, too, but it ran for 154 yards. The problem in both games – and for opponents over Kansas City’s seven-game winning streak – were turnovers.

The Raiders gave it up five times in a blowout loss two weeks ago, the Chargers turned it over two times, and the Broncos were hit with three mistakes. In all, Kansas City has forced 20 turnovers over the last nine games.

Pittsburgh has a bunch of problems, but turnovers aren’t among them.

There’s been just one giveaway over the last three games and a not-bad 15 on the year. As long as the team doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, it should be in this. However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Kansas City Will Win

The Chief running game should go off.

Of course Patrick Mahomes and company will take center stage – Tyreek Hill is out of the COVID protocols – but this is the game to start hammering away on the ground. The Steelers give up a league-high 4.9 yards per carry, allowing over 200 yards to the Vikings and Titans over the last two weeks.

Again, it’s Kansas City – it’s going to want to wing it around – but the Steelers allowed close to 200 yards or more in five of the last six games.

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The Steelers should be plucky.

They might not have the downfield passing game of Kansas City, and they can’t get Najee Harris going for a full 60 minutes behind the rough line, but the defense will bother Mahomes and the defense will offset a few problems with a few key takeaways.

There won’t be enough Pittsburgh offense to keep up late, but it’ll be a feisty, tough game that doesn’t start to slip away until late.

Denver at Las Vegas Game Preview

Why Denver Will Win

The running game keeps on working.

The Broncos have a nice mix of Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams helping the O crank out over 130 yards per game in five of the last six games.

It doesn’t always lead to wins, but when the rushing attack is rumbling, good things happen. Denver is 4-0 when running for 140 yards or more. The Las Vegas defense has given up 140 rushing yards or more five times and gave up over 100 yards in the first meeting.

Las Vegas won 28-14 in Week 4 thanks to four takeaways, but the Broncos haven’t been bad with turnovers all year.

Run, make the reeling Raiders press, assume the mistakes will follow.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 16

Why Las Vegas Will Win

Forget the four takeaways by the Raiders in the first meeting – that was an aberration.

However, the 300-yard passing game was part of the deal, and that should continue.

Derek Carr has been terrific for the league’s third-best air attack. The Bronco secondary has been good, but the teams that didn’t throw for big yards were mostly balanced. That’s not a thing with the Raiders.

The Denver run defense is strong, and the pass defense stats are a bit misleading. Las Vegas will keep the pressure on early and try to break the Broncos out of their shell.

The Raider defense will take its chances with Drew Lock trying to win this.

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Lock will add more of a downfield element than Teddy Bridgewater did, but he won’t be nearly consistent enough.

However, the ground attack will be okay, the defense will hold up in the fourth quarter, and the Raider offense that hasn’t scored more than 16 points in six of the last seven games will sputter again.

Washington at Dallas Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Garrett Gilbert was fine, but Taylor Heinicke is back for the Washington offense.

Adding more of a rushing element to the mix, the Football Team should be able to get back to its 100-yard rushing ways – it got there in the 27-20 loss to the Cowboys a few weeks ago.

Overall, the team wasn’t all that bad in the loss – except for the four turnovers. That wasn’t the norm for an offense that’s been strong at keeping the mistakes to a minimum and not pressing. The glitch from the first half of the season was fixed – at least until the Dallas game.

The Cowboys might be winning, but they’re still not out of their – relatively speaking – offensive funk. They’re winning because of four takeaways in each of the last three games. Washington should be able to limit the mistakes.

Why Dallas Will Win

Beyond the tons and tons of takeaways, the offense is operating with a decent balance.

No, this hasn’t been the high-flying fun show of earlier in the season, and Ezekiel Elliott isn’t playing like his normal self thanks to a knee problem, but it’s working.

The defense is stepping up – it leads the NFL in takeaways – and the offense is taking advantage. In this showcase game, there should be a bit more pop and explosion against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL.

Washington doesn’t just give up lots of yards; it gives up lots of big plays.

NFL Week 16 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be an entertaining back-and-forth Sunday night game with both offenses teasing scoring drives until the Dallas balance takes over.

No, there won’t be four takeaways this time around from the Dallas defense, but there will be enough third down stops to force field goals instead of touchdowns. Two short Zeke touchdown runs will set the tone.
