Why South Alabama Will Win

It’s been a solid year with three wins, two of the three losses in close battles, and with the team doing a nice job with an efficient passing game and without a whole lot giveaways.

Only UAB held the Jaguars to under 200 passing yards, and Coastal Carolina has given up yards through the air from time to time. This might be a great Chanticleer defense, but the USA lines have been strong from the start, and there should be just enough of a rushing attack to balance things out.

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

The team is getting better.

It had a showdown on the road against a high-powered Georgia State team with the talent and offense to pull off the big win, and instead, it was a total wipeout. The Chanticleer defense stepped up in the 51-0 win, QB Grayson McCall was brilliant, and the team stayed on track to be in the mix for a New Year’s Six game.

Yeah, the defense has allowed passing yards here and there, but it’s been great overall – it leads the Sun Belt – the offense is outstanding at moving the chains, and the team dominates the time of possession battle.

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama won’t let this be a total wipeout, but the Chanticleers are playing too well in all phases.

Coastal Carolina will be get up early and won’t be pressed too much, and converting on two takeaways will turn it into a runaway in the fourth quarter.

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The running game has been close to unstoppable by everyone but Marshall.

The Thundering Herd were held to 96 yards, but no one else has been remotely close to slowing down the Appalachian State machine, running for 305 yards or more in four of the five games.

The Mountaineers are good enough through the air if needed, but they won’t need to do too much of that if all goes according to plan. Texas State’s run defense has had a few good moments, but it was hit for well over a combined 500 yards and six scores by BYU and Louisiana over the last two games.

Why Texas State Will Win

Texas State is just versatile enough offensively to give the Mountaineers a few problems. The passing game has the ability to push past 200 yards, the ground attack is just good enough to be a concern – it ran for 204 yards in a good fight with Louisiana – and at home, watch out.

The Bobcats are came off a five-game road run, and played well against the Ragin’ Cajuns. They might have lost their three home games, but they pushed far better SMU and Louisiana teams, and lost a wild shootout to UTSA. They play better in San Marcos.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t just assume Appalachian State rolls at will.

Texas State has a good, tough team that can play well and hang with just about anyone on its schedule … and lose.

The Mountaineer running game will take over in the second half and put the game out of reach after a tight first half.

Why Troy Will Win

The passing game continues to be outstanding. The Trojans are bombing away in game after game with 333 yards or more in each of the last four, with Jacob Free stepping in for Gunnar Watson over the last two weeks and rocking.

The offense is there to keep up any pace.

Just as important against the Eagles, the Troy run defense continues to be strong. It got hit hard by Georgia State in a loss a few weeks ago, but four of the nine touchdowns allowed were against BYU and the D has allowed just 3.6 yards per carry. The defensive front is good enough overall at getting around the ball and into the backfield to give the Eagles problems.

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

When teams run well on Troy, Troy loses.

Arkansas State has a strong offense, but it didn’t try to barrel on the ground. BYU and Georgia State ran often and ran well, and won. No one else kept pounding away, and lost.

No, Troy doesn’t give up big rushing yards, but it can get hammered on. It’s 0-2 when allowing more than 36 rushing attempts, and while it’s a function of the team’s style, Georgia Southern has yet to run fewer than 37 times – the los to Coastal Carolina – and has carried it 40 times or more in every other game.

It’s not going to stop running.

What’s Going To Happen

Do you like the grinding ground game better or the high-flying passing attack? Troy has been fantastic at times, but the win over Arkansas State was the first decent win so far. Georgia Southern doesn’t have a good win, but it kept it tight in battles with Louisiana and Georgia Southern.

At home, the Eagle offense will do a bit more in fun game with a whole lot of big mood swings.

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The offense continues to be great.

The passing game is the best in the Sun Belt and among the most productive in the nation, there was a little bit of a ground game last week against Troy, and the yards are there.

Turnovers are a problem, and there aren’t enough points for all of the yards, but the attack should be able to at least keep things moving against a Louisiana D that doesn’t generate a whole lot of pressure in the backfield. On the flip side, the Red Wolves are a tackle-for-loss machine, but …

Why Louisiana Will Win

The ASU defense is giving up over 40 points and allowing 488 yards per game, the secondary is getting bombed on, and for all the plays in the backfield, the run defense isn’t good enough.

That’s an issue, but the lack of scoring punch is the bigger issue – the team should be built for shootouts. The Red Wolves had a few outburst games, but it only hit 24 points four times in seven games.

Louisiana? It’s got the ground game to take over the game early, but the passing attack is what came through last week against Texas State. There’s enough variance to the attack to score in a variety of ways.

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana is fantastic, but it’s playing up or down to the competition. Oddly enough, the easiest blowout was against Iowa State – everything else has been decided by ten points or fewer.

ASU will once again crank up the yards, but it’ll stall just enough to allow the Ragin’ Cajuns to hold serve. It’ll be a good, fun game, but Louisiana will close out more drives with points.

Why ULM Will Win

All of a sudden, the Georgia State offense stopped working. Coastal Carolina does that to teams, but the Panthers only managed 106 yards in last week’s blowout loss.

ULM would need to come up with something amazing and special to make this a fight, but it’s doing a decent job of coming up with takeaways, the offensive line isn’t allowing a ton of plays behind the line, and the offense should be a whole lot better than it has been.

It’s way overdue to explode. But …

Why Georgia State Will Win

The ULM offense just isn’t working.

The passing attack has had a few moments, but it hasn’t been consistent. The ground game hasn’t even been close to good enough, failing to hit 100 yards in any of the seven games for an O that put up more than 17 points just once.

Yeah, Georgia State struggled – to be nice – in the loss to Coastal Carolina, but this is an explosive, balanced team with the ability to put this away fast.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State will score 17 points in the first quarter and breath easily the rest of the way. A whole lot of anger from that 51-0 loss will be taken out on of the worst teams in college football.

Why UTEP Will Win

FIU has been a massive disappointment. Its season hasn’t been able to get going thanks to virus issues, an interrupted schedule, and with no offensive punch to make up for it.

The passing game isn’t doing enough – its averaging just 95 yards per game against powerhouses Liberty, Middle Tennessee and Jacksonville State – and the running game isn’t making up for it.

UTEP’s passing game has been as good as it’s been in a long, long time, hitting the 200-yard mark in each of the last three games, and it’s doing well down the field.

Why FIU Will Win

The UTEP running game has been hit-or-miss.

It hasn’t hit 100 yards in three of the last five games, and it should have problems against a FIU run defense that hasn’t been bad. The Golden Panthers are getting into the backfield, and they have enough of a pass rush to be a bother, but they need to start doing even more to overcome the offensive issues.

At the very least, the offense isn’t making a whole lot of mistakes. FIU should be a +2 in turnover margin, and it has to capitalize on every opportunity.

What’s Going To Happen

Is this finally when FIU can break through? It’s not like it’s getting blown out, but it’s not able to come up with the big plays at key times, and the offense simply didn’t do anything against Jacksonville State.

UTEP is back at home after three straight road games, and it’s going to matter. Yes, the Miners are 3-3, but two of those wins are against FCS teams, and the other is against ULM. It’s not going to be easy, but the Miners will fight through with a good late drive to pull it off against the punchless Golden Panthers.

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

So Florida Atlantic isn’t Marshall this year – that’s okay. This is still among the best teams in Conference USA, it was able to pound past a not-awful UTSA, and it’s playing enough defense to hold down most offenses.

WKU’s O isn’t like most offenses.

It’s awful at converting on third downs, it averages just 275 yards per game, and scoring is optional, failing to get past 14 points in any of the last four games. The FAU pass rush and defensive front should be able to keep WKU being WKU. But …

Why WKU Will Win

It’s not like Florida Atlantic’s offense is going off.

The Owls have been able to run a little bit, but there’s no real passing game to worry about and not enough of a downfield attack.

The WKU defense hasn’t been bad. It hasn’t been enough to overcome the lack of an offensive punch, but the secondary is fine and the pass rush that’s been a bit disappointing – being very kind here – should be able to rise up from time to time.

What’s Going To Happen

Be absolutely stunned if this is anything like a fun shootout.

The FAU running game will be okay, the pass rush will come up with stop after stop, and it’ll survive what will be a surprisingly entertaining – but low scoring – game.
