Why UAB Will Win

Louisiana Tech just can’t seem to run the ball.

The offensive line is having a massive problem in pass protection and against the more active defensive fronts, and it’s showing with bad day after bad day on the ground. The offense hasn’t hit the 100-yard rushing mark in any of the last four games.

This isn’t the high-powered Louisiana Tech O that it should be. It’s had few moments, but it hasn’t been able to come up with 270 yards of total offense in any of the last three games, and now it’s dealing with a Blazer D that hasn’t allowed more than 290 yards in any of the last three games.

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The turnovers have been a big, big problem for UAB.

It was able to overcome them against the mediocre teams, but against Louisiana, the two interceptions and -2 turnover margin were a killer in the loss. On the year, the Blazers have given it up 12 times. Louisiana Tech’s defense isn’t taking the ball away in bunches, but it force mistakes. It can pull this off at home with a +2 turnover margin.

The passing game hasn’t been able to get rolling, but the pieces are there to do it. UAB’s secondary hasn’t been pushed all that often – this is the game for the Bulldogs to start pushing through the air.

What’s Going To Happen

UAB lost to Miami, and it was beaten by a strong Louisiana team. That’s it.

Marshall might be the star of Conference USA, but UAB is still right there with the offense that can do a little bit of everything right. This is about the defense, though.

The Louisiana Tech offense simply isn’t able to keep things moving enough to get this much-needed win.

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Louisiana running game has the potential to roll through a UAB defensive front that faced one team that can run – Miami.

The Hurricanes tore off 337 yards on the ground.

It’s a bit much to compare Levi Lewis to Miami’s D’Eriq King, but the veteran Ragin’ Cajun quarterback can move, he has the backs to take control of the tempo, and the offensive line is as good as the Blazers have seen since early September. However …

Why UAB Will Win

Louisiana can run, but UAB is better at it.

Spencer Brown was held to 22 yards by WKU, but the offense managed 217 yards on the ground for its third 200-yard day of the season. One of the others was a 190-yard performance in a win over South Alabama.

Louisiana has a fantastic offense that moves fast, strikes quickly, and plays with a tremendous pace. However, it doesn’t do much to go on long marches. UAB dominates the time of possession battle and should have the ball for close to 35 minutes. And then there’s the problem of …

What’s Going To Happen

The UAB pass rush should take over when it needs to.

The defense will give up passing yards, but no one other than King has been able to it the 50% mark over the last month on a secondary that’s limiting everyone’s attack to a whole lot of dinks and dunks.

This is a massive test for a Blazer team that has the wins, but hasn’t beaten anyone good enough to chirp about. Louisiana is used to playing in close, tight games, but UAB’s defense will come up with two big fourth quarter stops to survive.

This is like a strong mid-December bowl game. It’ll be a good one.

The defense continues to fight the good fight.

It’s not getting a whole lot of help from the offensive side, but it’s doing a decent job against the run – only with one meltdown against Liberty – and Louisville has the only offense that’s been able to throw well.

UAB is having a few problems with turnovers – giving the ball aways three times against Central Arkansas and four times against UTSA – and it can’t give the Hilltoppers any easy chances, but …

WKU’s defense isn’t taking the ball away.

It came up with two takeaways against Louisville, and that’s been it. Three games since, no takeaways.

The bigger problem is an offense that’s doing an okay job of coming up with yards, but it still can’t score. With the 38-14 loss to Marshall, the Hilltoppers have yet to score more than 24 points this year and, as a program, hasn’t pushed past 30 points in 30 of its last 34 games.

UAB averages 30.5 points per game.

What’s Going To Happen

UAB hasn’t been consistent, but the offense is balanced enough to keep things moving on a WKU defense that’s not able to generate enough production give the O easy points. The Hilltoppers are good enough to keep the score from getting out of hand, but the offense won’t be able to come through in the second half.

Why UAB Will Win

Now that’s the UAB that we’re all expecting.

After struggling against Central Arkansas, and getting rolled over by Miami – which in hindsight seems more than fine – the Blazers were fantastic in a 42-10 win over a South Alabama team that started out hot.

The passing game was strong, the secondary was terrific, and the takeaways started coming. UCA was able to stay with the Blazers with three forced turnovers, but the team tightened up with just one giveaway over the last two games.

UTSA’s defense is getting rolled through the air – allowing 285 yards or more  in all three games – and UAB’s Bryson Lucero is coming off a 319-yard passing day.

Why UTSA Will Win

The UTSA offense was great with Frank Harris getting off to a hot start, but but he’s trying to get past a knee injury. The QB got banged up against Middle Tennessee, and New Mexico State transfer Josh Adkins stepped in and threw for 233 yards to make the O go.

Either way, UTSA has a nice quarterback to work around.

Sincere McCormick ran well, the offensive line has been good – at least compared to the last few years – and the team should be able to keep up. However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Roadrunner secondary has been shaky – to be kind. Lucero will hit the 300-yard mark, the Blazer offense will continue the momentum from the USA win, and this starts a good run of home wins.
