Watch: Tim Tebow takes practice field with Jags for first time

Tim Tebow is finally back on the football field and suited up with the Jgs for the first tom Thursday.

Tim Tebow’s signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars became official Thursday, clearing him to take the field for the team’s second workout for Phase 2. With that being the case, it didn’t take long for the news to get a glimpse of the Jags’ new tight end as he was making his way to the field for his first NFL practice session since 2015.

If there is one takeaway we can garner from the video above, it’s that Tebow looks like he’s been hitting the weight room hard. That’s something that coach Urban Meyer also hinted at last week while raving about Tebow’s workout.

Tebow’s signing comes after the Jags weren’t able to add a big time receiving threat at tight end this offseason. However, they were able to add to solid blocking tight ends in Chris Manhertz and Luke Farrell.

It’s likely going to be a difficult task for Tebow to make the team in his return as he’s never played tight end in the NFL. Additionally, he’s now 33 and is approximately six years removed from football although he was playing in the minor leagues from 2016-21. Still, it’s a difficult challenge Tebow said he’s embracing and one that could be an interesting story if the Jacksonville native looks decent at his new position.

Tim Tebow releases a statement after signing with Jags

Tim Tebow has released a statement about his signing with the Jags and says he’ll embrace the hard challenge ahead of him to make the team.

After working out with the team and seemingly catching the eyes of certain members on the staff, Tim Tebow has signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’ll join the team Thursday as they are in Phase 2 of offseason workouts in hopes to stick to the roster as a tight end.

After signing, the former first round pick released a statement and it appears he understands he has a true test on his hands. Still, despite not playing the tight end position in the NFL, it’s a challenge Tebow embraces.

“I want to thank the Jaguars for the opportunity to compete and earn the chance to be part of this team,” Tebow said according to the Jags. “I know it will be a challenge, but it is a challenge I embrace. I am dedicated to taking the direction of our coaching staff and learning from my teammates. I appreciate everyone’s support as I embark on this new journey.”

Not only will Tebow be trying to make a return to the NFL at a new position, but he’ll be trying to do so at 33 years of age. He will also be trying to return after being out of the league since 2015.

The Jags seem to have plenty of blocking tight ends on their roster between Chris Manhertz and Luke Farrell, but need a pass-catching threat at the moment. It’s hard to imagine that Tebow makes them significantly better in that category, but the offseason is the perfect time to at least see.

A report first surfaced on the Jags’ decision to work out Tebow the day of the NFL draft. According to Jags coach Urban Meyer, there was more than one workout (one of which he witnessed) and the former quarterback looked impressive in terms of athleticism.

“We have not signed Tim,” Meyer said last week on Cris Collinsworth’s PFF podcast. “There’s a thought going around. He was in the best shape of his life, asked to see if he could work out with a couple of our coaches. I wasn’t even there. They came back to me and said, ‘Wow, this guy’s in incredible shape.’ Then I went another time and watched them try him out. And they said go work on these things, he comes back later.

They try him out again, I’m not there, they come in and they said, ‘Wow, this guy’s ball skills, he’s a great athlete, he looks like he’s 18-years-old, not 20, whatever he is, 33. I said, ‘Guys you don’t understand, now this guy is, he’s the most competitive maniac you’re ever gonna talk to and let’s give it a shot.’”

Only time will tell if others share the same thoughts as Meyer as Tebow will take the practice field Thursday for the first time since he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. If he looks like he belongs, he should be able to stick to the 90-man roster until the preseason where the Jags can get an even better reading on him.

Tim Tebow officially signs contract to join Jags

After weeks of a rumored return, Tim Tebow is joining the Jags as a TE as the are in Phase 2 of offseason workouts.

Tim Tebow is officially a tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars – at least for the moment. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the former first round pick signed a contract with the team and will join them as they are currently in Phase 2 of offseason workouts.

Tebow, 33, will now join his former college coach from his time with the Florida Gators in Urban Meyer, who has now jumped to the NFL. His signing comes after retiring from baseball after a stint where he reached Class AAA for the New York Mets. He initially began that journey in 2016 after trying out the NFL as a quarterback.

Tebow’s NFL career, on the other hand, started in 2010, as he was drafted by the Denver Broncos as a first round selection. In 2012 he was eventually traded to the New York Jets and also had stints with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles during the preseasons of 2013 and 2015, respectively.

Tebow, who has never played tight end in the NFL, joins the Jags as they could use a pass-catching threat at the position. During the offseason they signed Chris Manhertz and drafted Luke Farrell, both of whom are known as blockers. Last season, Farrell accumulated just five catches for 37 yards with Ohio State, while Manhertz had one more catch than him for 52 yards with the Carolina Panthers.

The other notable tight end on the Jags’ roster is James O’Shaughnessy, who re-signed with them this offseason. His return comes after hauling in 28 catches for 262 yards in 2020.

Jags legend Jimmy Smith in favor of possible Tim Tebow addition

The legendary Jaguars receiver said that Tebow will be a positive presence to the team as someone with a strong love for the city.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly finalizing a deal to bring on Tim Tebow as a tight end, the attention of many current and former players has returned to another former NFL quarterback who hasn’t been able to get an opportunity in a while. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick hasn’t appeared on a roster since he knelt during the national anthem as a form of protest against racial injustice.

With Tebow getting another chance, many have been quick to point out that Kaepernick is still waiting on that opportunity despite having a more productive football career than Tebow.

But legendary Jaguars receiver Jimmy Smith loves the Tebow addition, telling TMZ Sports that he will bring a positive change to the franchise.

“We need a guy like Tim Tebow,” Smith said, “who’s a hometown hero who has love for the city anyway. He’s going to be a great support for Trevor Lawrence. Whatever capacity that is, it’s going to be a positive rather than a negative.

Urban Meyer says Tim Tebow’s workouts convinced him to ‘give it a shot’

The Jaguars coach said Tim Tebow’s stellar workouts were the main reason the team is interested in bringing him on as a tight end.

Much of the NFL news cycle has been focused on Jacksonville for the last few days, as a report from NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero earlier this week indicated that the Jaguars plan to sign Tim Tebow as a tight end. Tebow hasn’t been on an NFL roster since 2015 and hasn’t made a 53-man group since 2012.

The news has been polarizing, to say the least. According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, even the Jags’ locker room is unsure of the decision, with some players feeling as though the signing sends the wrong message.

But on an episode of the “Cris Collinsworth PFF Podcast,” coach Urban Meyer explained what has led the team to consider bringing Tebow on. He said that the former NFL quarterback and minor league baseball player remains in great shape, calling him a “competitive maniac.”

“We have not signed Tim,” Meyer said. I said, ‘Guys you don’t understand, now this guy is, he’s the most competitive maniac you’re ever gonna talk to and let’s give it a shot.'”

Based on this context from Meyer, it doesn’t sound like the Jaguars coaching staff was particularly bullish on the idea of bringing in Tebow until they saw him work out. But if Meyer, who has known Tebow since he was a high school prospect, thinks he’s in as good of shape now as he was when he was college-age, that’s a promising sign.

Tebow has no experience playing tight end in college or the NFL, but there’s a reason he may get a chance: Jacksonville failed to significantly address the position this offseason. With that being said, it’s hard to see Tebow being more than James O’Shaughnessy, who has never been a major contributor but is coming off career highs in both receptions (28) and yards (262).

But after O’Shaugnessy there are a lot of question marks. Chris Manhertz, an offseason addition from Carolina, has just 12 career catches. Tyler Davis was targeted just twice in his five appearances as a rookie and made no catches, while Luke Farrell, the team’s fifth-round pick this year, projects as a primarily blocking tight end.

Tebow will have the chance to prove himself at a position he hasn’t played since his freshman year of high school. But whether this Hail Mary will work out for Meyer and Co. remains to be seen.

Steelers LB Devin Bush voices displeasure with Tim Tebow signing

The Pittsburgh linebacker mocked the Jaguars on Twitter for reportedly signing Tim Tebow as a tight end.

Though if it works he’ll appear to be brilliant, coach Urban Meyer had to have known that bringing in Tim Tebow to play tight end (a position he hasn’t played since his freshman year of high school) would be lampooned around the league.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Devin Bush was one of the people who got in on the action. On Twitter, he expressed his surprise that Tebow ended up on a roster before former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who hasn’t been on a team since 2016, when he made headlines for kneeling during the national anthem. Kaepernick and the NFL settled a lawsuit where the former alleged that the latter colluded to keep him out of the league.

Bush also said that he’s excited for the next matchup against the Jaguars, though the two teams aren’t scheduled to face each other again until 2023.

After Bleacher Report posted a tweet that included Bush’s comments, he quote tweeted it with, “Here comes the bored media.”

It’s pretty clear that most of the league isn’t taking this move very seriously, but for the Jags, it’s a bit of a Hail Mary to solve the problems at tight end that they failed to address earlier this offseason.

Tebow’s chances of making the final roster are slim, and if he did it wouldn’t be a very good sign. But regardless, this seems to be a storyline that will dominate the rest of the Jaguars’ offseason, aside from the addition of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Jags to sign Tim Tebow to a 1-year deal as a TE

After working him out the Jags will be signing former first-round QB Tim Tebow as a tight end.

It appears the Jacksonville Jaguars have seen enough from Tim Tebow to conclude that he’s worth a look in camp. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the organization will be signing the former first-round draft pick, but as expected, it will be at tight end.

This news comes after the Jags had worked Tebow out according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. In Schefter’s report, it was stated that Tebow worked out with Jags tight end coach Tyler Bowen. During the draft, the Jags were asked about the potential signing of Tebow, but elected to say their focus was on the draft at that moment. However, with them only being able to address the position with fifth-round pick Luke Farrell, it appears the team wanted another addition at the position.

After the draft, Jaguars front office member Tony Khan told the media that the team’s coach, Urban Meyer, thought Tebow could help the roster when asked about an update on the former Gators quarterback.

“I can’t say too much, but Tim has come in and worked out as a tight end,” Khan said. “That’s not the position we’ve seen him play but that’s the position that he’s been practicing at with us. So, that will be interesting to see how that contributes us on offense, too.

“But obviously, Urban knows Tim very well and Tim’s got a great history of winning and Urban really believes he can help us. I think it makes a lot of sense at a position where we need to get better.”

Tebow, who is a Jacksonville native, was coached by Meyer in college with the Florida Gators from (2006-09). Together, the two, who are now neighbors, won two BCS titles in 2006 and 2008.

Afterward, Tebow preceded to be a first-round pick for the Denver Broncos (2010), who eventually traded him to the New York Jets in 2012. To wrap up his first NFL stint, he played with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively, as a preseason player in 2013 and 2015.

Tebow ventured into the baseball realm after his time in the NFL, reaching Class AAA in the minor leagues (for the New York Mets). However, he retired this preseason and has decided to give the NFL at least one more shot.
