Steelers to reveal Franco Harris retired jersey display on Saturday

You don’t want to miss Saturday’s preseason game.

If you weren’t sure if you wanted to attend the Pittsburgh Steelers preseason game on Saturday, this might change your mind. The team announced on Wednesday that the team plans to unveil its display for the retired jersey number of Steelers legendary running back Franco Harris.

Harris played for the Steelers from 1972-1983 and is the team’s all-time leading rusher with 11,950 rushing yards. Harris was the workhorse back for the greatest franchise in NFL history as the Steelers won four Super Bowls in six seasons. Harris was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.

Tragically, Harris died in December of 2022, just three days before the 50th Anniversary of the Immaculate Reception, widely considered the greatest play in NFL history. The team will honor Harris’ memory by retiring the No. 32. In addition, Saturday’s game will also be Family Day and fans are encouraged to arrive early, join in the festivities and enter Acrisure Stadium early for the jersey ceremony.

Minkah Fitzpatrick highest-ranked Steeler on NFL Network Top 100

Minkah Fitzpatrick didn’t even make the Top 100 last season.

NFL Network unveiled their next group of players on the Top 100 list on Thursday. This is a list of the 100 best players in the league as voted on by other players. We’ve already seen defensive tackle Cam Heyward and outside linebacker T.J. Watt on the list but safety Minkah Fitzpatrick landed the highest.

Fitzpatrick checked in at No. 18. Given Fitzpatrick is probably the best all-around safety in the league an argument could be made that this ranking is entirely too high. But it is important to keep in mind, Fitzpatrick didn’t even make the list last season.

In 2022, Fitzpatrick led the league with six interceptions. He was an absolute ballhawk in the secondary and one of those rare players that opposing offenses have to gameplan for every week.

Steelers Twitter account ranked No. 7 by Complex

Pittsburgh’s social media presence is tremendous and engaging.

The competition to become the most engaging NFL Twitter account is a real thing. All you have to do is see what lengths teams go to on schedule release day, during the draft and on gamedays.

Complex once again ranked all 32 NFL Twitter accounts based on humor, engagement and creativity. You can check out the full list and their methodology here.

The Pittsburgh Steelers actually fell in this year’s rankings compared to last season. Pittsburgh checked in at No. 4 in 2022 but fell to No. 7 this time around.

Pittsburgh’s account is a nice mix of serious content and humor. And with Steelers fans being so active online, engagement stays high. The Steelers don’t go to the extremes for humor like some other accounts and production values aren’t always on par with a team like the Los Angeles Chargers but their place on this list is deserved.

Steelers in rare company among teams without losing seasons

Pittsburgh is one of only two teams without a losing season in the last 10 seasons.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Consistency is the only path to success in the NFL. The league has become so competitive that there are only a handful of teams who consistently finish over .500 and the final playoff spots are typically highly contested by those teams. Looking at losing seasons over the last 10 seasons, the Pittsburgh Steelers are among some pretty elite company.

In fact, the only two teams without a losing season in the last 10 seasons are the Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs. Here is how the entire league breaks down:

Cleveland Browns – 9

New York Giants, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars – 8

Tampa Bay Bucs, Washington Commanders, Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons – 7

Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos – 6

Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers – 5

Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans – 4

Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts – 3

New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys -2

Seattle Seahawks – 1

Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers – 0

Ironically, the Steelers and Chiefs couldn’t be more different when it comes to the postseason despite their regular-season success. The Chiefs have played in the Super Bowl three of the last four seasons and won two of them and the Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016.

The 33rd Team says 2023 Steelers have no future Hall of Famers

Where are the Steelers on this list?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

If you were making a list of players on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster right now who have a great shot at making the Pro Football Hall of Fame, how many do you have? One? Two? More?

The good folks over at The 33rd Team looked at the roster and decided that zero was the correct number. They put together their list of all the players currently in the NFL headed to the Hall of Fame and did not include any Steelers.

This means no T.J. Watt, no Cam Heyward and no Minkah Fitzpatrick.

To offer some perspective, they have edge rusher Von Miller as a HOF lock. They also have defensive end Cam Jordan as a likely Hall of Famer and no safeties on the list at all.

I’m not saying there is some bias here but not including any of the Steelers big three, given many of the names on the list feels like a major oversight and frankly disrespectful to Watt, Heyward and Fitzpatrick.

Looking back at the career of Steelers LB Clark Haggans

Let’s look at some of the highlights from former Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers family was struck with tragedy on Tuesday when it was reported that former linebacker Clark Haggans had died at the age of 46. Let’s look back at the career of Haggans who was a key piece on some of the best defenses in the NFL during his time in Pittsburgh.

Steelers release statement on death of broadcaster Stan Savran

Team president Art Rooney II released a statement on the death of Stan Savran.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

On Monday, the city of Pittsburgh lost an icon and a legend when longtime broadcaster Stan Savran died. Savran had been part of the landscape of Pittsburgh sports for decades. Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II released the following statement on Stavran:

Today is a sad day in the City of Pittsburgh as we lost a legendary person, media icon, and close friend with the passing of Stan Savran. He was a gentleman in every way possible, and he did so much for our city and Western Pa with his honest candor and knowledge of all sports, both locally and nationally. Stan was involved for many years working on our Steelers Radio Network as well as doing several Steelers’ interviews and shows, while also being a valuable contributor to our Hall of Honor committee.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed, but always remembered.

Will the Steelers trade for Chase Young?

Maybe the Steelers will trade for Chase Young after all.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

I said just a day ago that there was no reason for the Pittsburgh Steelers to pursue a trade for Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young. I stand by that, but if you believe the rumors, the Steelers might actually be in the market for Young and might actually do this.

Color me shocked. A trade for Young isn’t going to be cheap. He’s a former No. 2 overall pick. To think the Commanders would accept anything less than a first-round pick seems shortsighted. But we know head coach Mike Tomlin is a big fan of Young’s, and this might be a case of Tomlin jumping on an opportunity with a new, aggressive general manager looking to make a statement.

But that raises an important question: Where would Young play? Is he the guy the Steelers bring in to back up T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith and take a new contract for Highsmith off the table? Young is heading into the final year of his rookie deal and is going to want a fat new contract. The Steelers can’t pay both Young and Highsmith.

So cast your vote and make the prediction: Will the Steelers trade for Young?
