Dustin Johnson’s secret weapon at the Masters

Do a quick online search or walk into any golf store, and there will be putting mats. LOTS of mats. Which ones are worth your money and time? One mat, in particular, is scorching hot these days. The buyer at a large national golf retailer even described it as the sport’s version of Tickle Me Elmo or a Furby doll. It’s the Perfect Putting Mat (PPM). Made from crystal velvet material—the polyester fabric used in clothing—the putting surface produces a consistent roll similar to real greens (the ball-roll distance with a Stimpmeter measures 10 to 14). Place the mat on a hard surface (i.e., wooden floor) for “faster” speeds or a soft one (carpet) for slower speeds. Sultan’s Run Golf Club is home to the most dramatic signature hole in the state of Indiana! But it’s not just one hole that makes this course special.

Years ago, this lush land was home to Supreme Sultan, a horse of history and literally a legend in his own time. It was over these hills and valleys of picturesque beauty where Supreme Sultan sired a record number of World Champion American Saddlebred horses. No place on earth can lay claim to this record.

Now this same ground recalls the heritage of Supreme Sultan, just as an engraved stone marks each unique and challenging tee box, memorializing the name of one of those World Champions. From its very beginning, this land was destined for greatness, but few would have predicted the creation of a world class golf course that would entice champions.

Sultan’s Run opened in 1992 but then embarked on an extensive remodeling project in 1996, taking the golf course to the pinnacle of public golf. Renowned architect Tim Liddy, a disciple of world-renowned architect Pete Dye, took what the land already offered and enhanced it. Tim says, Sultan’s Run offers “one of the best pieces of property I have ever had the privilege to work on. The No. 18 golf hole alone is incredible and worth the round of golf.”

All 18 holes at Sultan’s Run Golf Club have been beautified in some shape or form from entirely new bunkering and reconstructed greens, to a complete rework of several holes. The result is that Sultan’s Run is a world class golf facility that golfers will talk about long after their round is done.

Sultan’s Run offers a world-class playing surface with Zoysia tees and fairways and Bentgrass greens on 224 acres of beautiful views in the heart of Southern Indiana. It is a perennial award-winning 18-hole Championship Course, Par 72 layout that meanders through lush wooded grounds and over swift peaks and valleys. Sultan’s Run hosts or has hosted many high-quality events and outings each year, including the Indiana PGA Southern Open, Indiana PGA Senior Open, Indiana Open Qualifier, Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame Celebrity Classic, Indiana High School Athletic Association Sectional 29 and various College and High School Conference Championships and Invitationals.

Sultan’s Run is a three-hour drive from Cincinnati, OH, Nashville, TN and St. Louis, MO; two-plus hours from Indianapolis, IN and one-plus hour from Louisville, KY.
