The Dunes and Mountain courses feature a common clubhouse and share a world class practice facility. Round one and two will have you playing the Dunes course with the final round contested on the visually stunning Pete Dye Mountain course. Both the Dunes and Mountain feature the classic Dye design which is evident the moment you approach the first tee. Although designed to intimidate and fool the eye, the Dunes and Mountain both offer generous landing areas off the tee. Meet Jeff Wright, the former model and rock star who lost it all but has found his way back to golf at the U.S. Senior Amateur

It’s been a few years but Jeff Wright can still feel the embarrassment of being woken up in his car in the middle of the night by security because he was sleeping in the parking lot.

“I’ve slept in the back of my car so many times after being just beaten up on a course over the last couple of years,” Wright said earlier this week from a hotel room in Detroit. “Getting woken up in the middle of the night by security because I’m not supposed to be parked in the parking lot of a tournament I’m playing in and just being humiliated. It’s like, dude, if you had any idea the only reason why I’m here is because I can’t afford to get a hotel but I’m five shots out of the lead.”

Wright hasn’t always been a homeless golfer chasing his dream on the course. In fact, the former millionaire has lived a life most thrill-seekers can only dream of. Coming out of high school in California, he was one of the best players in the country. After losing his game in a short stint at Arizona State, Wright returned home to the University of California-Irvine with a new hobby: the guitar.

“I kind of discovered that I had a little bit of a gift for writing and creativity. Low and behold my human sex education teacher at UC-Irvine, in an auditorium of about 250 people, wants to read my exemplary paper out loud. Everybody on my golf team is there, all my friends, and he goes, ‘This what an A-plus paper should be,’ and I just sunk in my chair. I walked off campus and never went back to school. I was like, ‘I’m done.’”

What came next for Wright was a successful 30 years in the music business where he opened for everyone from Hall and Oates to Train and Sugar Ray, followed by an epic fall from grace that left him, you guessed it, homeless. Despite misstep after setback, the former model, rock star and Millionaire Matchmaker contestant has found his way back to golf and will put his game on display Aug 28-Sept. 2. at the U.S. Senior Amateur at Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.

Golfweek 2021 Senior Tournament series includes 6-tournament schedule

Senior competitive golf is bigger and better than ever! The US Golf Association has granted fifteen exemptions into the US Senior Amateur for the top ranked players in the WAGR rankings which can be found HERE. Golfweek is part of that ranking system and is certified by WAGR through its Senior National Rankings found HERE. Golfweek has expanded its Elite Senior Amateur Tournament Series giving players the ability to qualify for the US Senior Amateur through exemption. The 6-tournament lineup includes longtime Golfweek stops as well as several new venues.

All Golfweek tournaments are 54-hole tournaments with one being a three-day Senior National Match Play Championship.

2021 Golfweek Senior National Match Play – Talamore Golf Resort

Talamore is where Scotland and the NC Sandhills collide! With 12 strategically placed sod-wall bunkers, The New Course at Talamore Resort is the only course in the Village of Pinehurst/Southern Pines area with multiple sod-wall bunkers. Following its recent restoration, the vision of legendary golf course architect, Reese Jones, comes back to life. Talamore is one of the premier courses in the Pinehurst area and will be the perfect venue for Golfweek’s Seventh Annual Senior National Match Play!

The Golfweek Senior National Match-Play Championship consists of four separate brackets, senior (age 55-64), super-senior (age 65-69), legends (age 74) and super-legends (75+). Over the course of three days, players in each bracket will be whittled to one Senior National Match-Play champion in each division. Unlike other match play tournaments, The Golfweek Senior National Match Play is not a one loss and done tournament. As players are eliminated from match-play they will enter a consolation stroke-play competition using the stableford scoring system where national ranking points will also be awarded. This is a nationally ranked senior tournament by Golfweek / USA Today Sports, and, is certified by the USGA and R&A as a World Amateur Golf Ranking counting tournament!

Calling all championship caliber Club, and State Association players age 65 and over to join us July 6-9 at one of Georgia’s best – The Golf Club of Georgia. Its time to tee it up in the 2021 Golfweek US Super Senior, Legends & Super Legends National Championship. This is the first national ranking championship exclusively for world class golfers age 65 and over. Sponsored by USA Today Sports, The Golfweek US Super Senior, Legends & Super Legends National Championship is now in its fifth year. The championship fills a void left by the US Golf Association for players 65 and over. After 54 holes of intense competition, only one player in each division will earn the right to hoist the trophy and be called a “National Champion.”

Golfweek Senior TOC will decide final standings in several age brackets

With only three Senior National Ranking tournaments left in 2020, each division is still up for grabs except the Super Legends.

Golfweek is opening the door to the exclusive Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida, for the top senior players in the nation. The Golfweek Senior Tournament of Champions will be played Dec. 2-4 on the Bear Course. The field features 96 of the nation’s top senior players 55 years of age and older, broken into four divisions: Seniors (55-64), Super Seniors (65-69), Legends (70-74) and Super Legends (75 and older).

The high-calibur field includes some of the game’s top senior amateurs, including Gene Elliott, the top-ranked senior player in the world. The Des Moines, Iowa, resident recently played in the inaugural East West Matches with some of the game’s best amateurs, and before that, captained the winning team at the Golfweek Senior Challenge Cup.

With only three Senior National Ranking tournaments left in 2020, each division is still up for grabs except the Super Legends where Walt Martin has locked up the first ever Super Legends National Trophy. The Senior National Rankings can be found here.

Craig Hurlbert - senior amateur golf — Craig Hurlbert

In the Senior Division, former Georgia state representative Allen Peake trails Craig Hurlbert of Magnolia, Texas, by 1,732.5 points. With 2,800 points still up for grabs in 2020, Peake needs to run the table to overtake Hurlbert.

In the Super Senior Division, Mark Fried of Solon, Ohio, leads John Armstrong of Frostburg, Maryland, by 349.2 points but with Fried sitting out the Senior TOC, there is a good chance Armstrong will take over the No. 1 spot.

In the Legends Division, two other Maryland players are fighting for the top spot. John Blank of Frostburg, Maryland, leads George Washburn of Frederick, MD by 977.5 points. Both are in the field at the TOC and both have been playing well.

In the first year of competition for the Super Legends Division, Walt Martin of St Augustine, Florida, has the title locked up with a 2,788.3-point lead over Charlie Busbee of Stockbridge, Georgia. Both are in the field in Ft. Myers.
