Florida cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. details preparing for and competing against Tennessee’s offense.

The third day of Southeastern Conference media days took place at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday.

Junior cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. represented Florida at media days on Wednesday.

Marshall Jr. started at cornerback in 13 games for the Gators in 2022. He recorded one interception, nine pass deflections, 29 tackles and one tackle for a loss last season.

Marshall Jr. discussed preparing for and competing against Tennessee’s offense under head coach Josh Heupel.

“Their offense is difficult,” Marshall Jr. said. “How split out wide their receivers are, they really space the field out. It kind of makes my job somewhat hard, makes the safeties’ job somewhat hard, then their fast tempo.

“That week preparing for the game, we work on fast tempo, getting our wind and things like that.”

Tennessee defeated the Gators, 38-33, at Neyland Stadium in 2022. Marshall Jr. recorded one tackle versus Tennessee in the contest.

Florida will host the Vols on Sept. 16 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and ESPN will televise the SEC East matchup.

Alabama junior linebacker Dallas Turner discussed playing Tennessee’s offense last year.

The Vols defeated Alabama, 52-49, and totaled 567 offensive yards (385 passing, 182 rushing) in 2022.

“It’s a very high-powered offense, very fast,” Turner said of Tennessee’s offense under head coach Josh Heupel.

Quarterback Hendon Hooker completed 21-of-30 passing attempts versus the Crimson Tide, totaling 385 passing yards and five passing touchdowns, in Tennessee’s win.

“They had a great quarterback last year, Hendon Hooker, doing what he does best, throwing the ball and making completions, fast reads and all types of stuff like that,” Turner said. “They are very difficult to defend, an offense like that. We just came up short last year. We just hope for the best this year.”

Turner recorded two tackles versus Tennessee last year.

Kelly was asked about his thoughts on a potential impact that artificial intelligence could have on football game planning.

“It’s an intriguing opportunity,” Kelly said. “I think there’s room for it. I think it has some intriguing opportunities in recruiting. We spend a lot of time on profiles, recruiting profiles, and the intangibles or the traits that we’re looking for particular players.

“I think AI has an opportunity, maybe to create that kind of model for us relative to who is that kind of player out there all over the country, without making a mistake. I think that there’s going to be room for it, and I think it’s exciting and something that we’re about to venture into.”

Clark Lea details Vanderbilt’s cornerbacks ahead of fall camp

2023 SEC media days: Clark Lea details Vanderbilt’s cornerbacks ahead of fall training camp

Vanderbilt third-year head coach Clark Lea kicked off the second day of Southeastern Conference media days Tuesday at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Commodores will conclude regular-season play at Tennessee on Nov. 25. Vanderbilt lost to the Vols, 56-0, last year in Lea’s second season.

Vanderbilt allowed 3,486 passing yards and 29 passing touchdowns in 2022.

Lea discussed the Commodores’ cornerbacks at SEC media days ahead of fall training camp.

“We have to find the best 11 on both sides,” Lea said. “We do return some snaps at corner, but that doesn’t mean that they haven’t played a bunch. This is about finding the people that are capable in the moment. Obviously, in a game now that is won and lost on the perimeter, we have to give our young players a chance to develop in fall camp. Obviously we have some second year players that are further along in their progress that we expect to have a role on our team. We also have a true freshman that comes in with the chance to make an impact, too. If you remember a year ago, CJ Taylor started as kind of a fringe contributor on our defense and became really our most dynamic playmaker on that side of the ball. That’ll happen at some level this year, too.

“What our goal here is, in fall camp, is to get all those guys exposure, and they’re going to be guarding some SEC-level receivers now. We have a good receiving corps, and it’s not always going to look pretty. For us, it’s to be patient enough to see that through, to keep coaching and developing them through both their wins and their losses and their reps, and to see how that group matures through camp and where we’re ready to start the season. At the point at which we put the ball down against Hawai’i, we don’t stop evaluating at that point. We’ll still look for the highest level performance. That gives those young players time to build into an impact role.”

Vanderbilt kicks off its season Aug. 26 versus Hawai’i at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville (7:30 p.m. EDT, SEC Network).

Eliah Drinkwitz discusses former Vol joining Missouri in 2023

Eliah Drinkwitz discusses a former Vol joining Missouri football in 2023.

Southeastern Conference media days kicked off Monday at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, Tennessee.

Media days will conclude with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and student-athletes Joe Milton III, Omari Thomas and Jacob Warren on Thursday.

Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz took part in media days Monday on the main stage.

Tennessee will play at Missouri on Nov. 11.

Drinkwitz discussed adding former Vol linebacker Nyles Gaddy to the Tigers’ roster in 2023.

“I think Nyles has come in and really been hungry to learn,” Drinkwitz said. “Obviously there’s a steep learning curve, having this being his third school, how we do things around our program in comparison to what he’s done in the past. It’s different. It doesn’t mean it’s right or wrong, it’s just how we do it here, so he’s adamant about trying to figure that out, and putting himself in a position to compete once we hit the ground on July 31 when we report to camp.

“He’s done all the things that we’ve asked him to do. He’s been excellent in the weight room, but he’s trying to get up to speed because once we start fall camp, then every competition, you’ve got to be at your best every day, and that room is so deep. There’s so many potential players, again, you can’t have a bad day or you’re going to fall on the depth chart, and that’s the way you want it. That’s the way great programs are built. We’re continuing to evolve to that situation.”

Gaddy played at Tennessee from 2018-19. He redshirted as a freshman in 2018 and appeared in one game for the Vols in 2019, recording zero statistics.

He transferred to Jackson State and played for head coach Deion Sanders. Gaddy recorded 74 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks and one interception in 24 games at Jackson State from 2021-22.

Jimbo Fisher discusses Texas A&M ending four-game SEC stretch at Tennessee

SEC media days: Jimbo Fisher discusses Texas A&M ending four-game conference stretch at Tennessee

Southeastern Conference media days kicked off Monday at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, Tennessee.

Media days will conclude with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and student-athletes Joe Milton III, Omari Thomas and Jacob Warren on Thursday.

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher took part in media days Monday on the main stage.

The Aggies will play at Tennessee on Oct. 14.

Texas A&M’s contest at Neyland Stadium ends a four-game Southeastern Conference stretch of games before an open date on Oct. 21: versus Auburn, versus Arkansas in Dallas, Texas, versus Alabama and at Tennessee.

Fisher discussed the Aggies’ stretch of conference games before an open date at media days.

“What we form right now and how we practice, and not just practice, you don’t practice until you do it right,” Fisher said. “You practice until you can’t do it wrong. I think that’s where maturity comes in, and I think that’s where experience comes in, and we have to get those habits across right now so we can take those things on the road. What we have to do on those games in Dallas, one’s in Tennessee, two at our place, so to be able to do — whether you’re doing them at home or on the road — those have to be engrained right now.

“The secret to this is no secret. It’s going to be the fundamental things, and great teams do ordinary things better than anybody else, and that’s what’s got to be engrained in us through camp, and then the athleticism, and the greatness, and the great plays will happen within the concepts of what you’re trying to do. You’ve got to practice that way to be able to take it and create habits in the big critical moments on the road, and at home, and those big games.”
