Rutgers volleyball promotes Abby Detering to assistant head coach

Rutgers women’s volleyball promoted Abby Detering.

Abby Detering will take on a new role in her third season with Rutgers volleyball. On Monday, Deterring was promoted to assistant head coach after being a vital member of the program’s growth.

She will now have a more detailed role in the program’s continued growth. Last year, Rutgers finished the season with a 10-20 record and had a big upset over a ranked Minnesota.

During her first season on the staff in 2022, Rutgers had its best start since 1998. Four Scarlet Knights were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament squads. They finished the season with 11 entries on the rally-era season leaders list. Last season, the program improved, capturing the most wins and best non-conference record since 2012.

After seeing some improvements, many are excited about what the future holds with Detering in her new role, including head coach Caitlin Schweihofer.

Abby offers high-level playing experience and brought that experience to guide our offense.”

While Detering has made her mark in Piscataway, success has followed her at every stop. During her college career at Penn State, Detering recorded 1,793 assists and 254 kills. She also helped the Nittany Lions post a 33-2 record and led them to an appearance in the national semifinals.

Rutgers Volleyball Announces 2023 Schedule

Rutgers volleyball has announced its fall schedule.

The 2022 campaign for Rutgers volleyball was disappointing as the Scarlet Knights finished with an 8-24 record. However, with August only months away, they are ready to leave last season in the rearview mirror. On Wednesday, the offseason reached a critical point as the 2023 regular season schedule was released.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action on the weekend of August 25-26 at the Virginia Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia. Rutgers will face North Carolina A&T and either Virginia or Rider. Non-conference play will continue the following weekend when the Scarlet Knights take on Winthrop, then host Wolfpack and Howard.

Rutgers will kick off Big Ten play in mid-September against Penn State before welcoming Maryland and Purdue to Piscataway. In October, Rutgers will be tested as six of their nine matches will be on the road. It will be a golden opportunity for them to conquer their road demons. During the 2022 campaign, the Scarlet Knights were 1-10 away from Piscataway.

Following a month of travel, the Scarlet Knights will enjoy some home cooking in November. Five of their eight matches are at Jersey Mike’s Arena. That includes visits from Indiana, Nebraska, and Michigan. The home finale is set for November 18th, with the season finale a week later at Ohio State.

As the Scarlet Knights look to exceed expectations, their most critical stretch will come in October when they travel around the Big Ten. If they can make it through that stretch, fans will have plenty to celebrate. Anticipation is already building for what the fall will bring as the schedule released signaled that the season is quickly approaching.
