Film study – what does John Forster add to the Rutgers football backfield?

Four-star recruit John Forster can add explosiveness to Rutgers backfield when he reports to campus in 2025.

Rutgers football added an explosive running back in New Jersey native John Forster last week. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound running back from Montvale, New Jersey, provides depth to the Scarlet Knights’ backfield when he reports to campus in 2025.

The St. Joseph Regional prospect has excellent vision and can read the field, analyze defensive formations, and find open spaces to run. Forster’s vision will allow him to shine under Rutgers Offensive Coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca’s zone running scheme, looking for cutbacks and holes in the defense.

His quickness and agility make it difficult for defenders to tackle him in the open field. Ciarrocca can use Forster’s athleticism anywhere on the field, aligning him in the backfield or at slot wide receiver.

Forster can shine in the Big Ten Conference because of his versatility as a running back. He can play effectively on every down and be used as a receiver on passing plays. He catches the ball well out of the backfield or at wide receiver.

[lawrence-related id=39066,39040]

Weighing only 185 pounds, Forster must build on his size as he develops towards the Power Five level. The Big Ten is a physical conference and if Forster can add power with his speed he can be a balance running back for the Scarlet Knights.

Forster can add depth to Rutgers’ special teams with the ability to return kicks or punts. Regardless of his size, the Scarlet Knights added another athletic weapon to their offense in 2025.

Breaking! Rutgers football flips 4-star D.J. McClary from Penn State!

D.J. McClary has committed to Rutgers football.

It was a Sunday afternoon flip for Rutgers football, with four-star linebacker D.J. McClary committing to the Scarlet Knights. It is a huge commitment for Rutgers as they land one of the top players in the state and make a crucial recruitment flip from a Big Ten rival.

McClary committed to Rutgers after previously being a part of the Penn State 2025 recruiting class.

The addition of McClary is huge. He is a top-six recruit in New Jersey in this recruiting class and is a significant win for the Scarlet Knights as a program. Nationally, ESPN ranks him as the No. 145 recruit in the country.

As the No. 203 ranked commit in the On3 Industry Rankings, McClary is the highest-ranked verbal in this class for Rutgers.

McClary, who plays for Henry Snyder (Jersey City, N.J.), took an official visit to Rutgers in early June. He had been committed to Penn State since last September.

A consensus four-star linebacker prospect, McClary was selected to play in January’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Last summer, he released a top eight of  Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, USC, and Tennessee in addition to Rutgers

Rutgers, with 28 commitments, now has the eighth-best class in the nation according to Rivals.

‘I want to make history’ – 4-star John Forster on picking Rutgers football last week

John Forster talks about picking Rutgers football.

The commitment of John Forster last week was a significant pick-up for a Rutgers football recruiting class that is among the best in the Big Ten as well as the nation.

A running back from St. Joseph’s (Montvale, New Jersey), Forster is one of several high-profile recruits to have committed to Rutgers this recruiting cycle. He committed to the Scarlet Knights last weekend.

Arguably the poster boy of this class, Forster heads up a class that has certainly turned heads. Rivals ranks the class as seventh in the nation and 247Sports puts them at No. 10.

Both recruiting outlets have Rutgers with one of the best recruiting classes in the Big Ten.

Forster took an official visit to Rutgers in late May and then followed it up one week later with a visit to Illinois. His commitment last week underscored the gains Rutgers has made with in-state commits.

In terms of Forster, Rivals ranks him as the fifth-best running back in the nation and a four-star recruit. He has been offered by Boston College, Duke, Minnesota, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.

“It felt like a home away from home,” Forster told Rutgers Wire. “And with the recruiting class they’re bringing in, I wanted to help make history in my home state.”

Forster had no shortage of high-profile offers, but his commitment to Rutgers sent a message about the direction of the program.

Coming off a 7-6 (3-6 Big Ten) season where they defeated Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, Rutgers is on the ascend. That momentum is being felt on the recruiting trail, where the Scarlet Knights currently have seven recruits ranked as four-star players.

[lawrence-related id=39031,39022]

There is a sense that with this highly-ranked class, Rutgers has turned a corner in terms of recruiting. Especially in terms of keeping in-state talent home.

“It’s very special every time my family and I are there,” Forster said.

“It’s a great time. They take great care of us and are very ensuring that they really care about family.”

‘We don’t worry about the stars’ – Greg Schiano says Rutgers recruits culture and philosophy, not rankings

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano breaks down his philosophy on recruiting.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – As nice as it is for Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano to have a highly ranked recruiting class, it is equally – if not more important – that the group fits the culture being developed around the Big Ten program.

It has been the road less taken for Schiano and Rutgers since his return, with Rutgers finally tasting a winning season in his fourth year back with the program.

Speaking last week prior to the start of his charity golf classic, Schiano discussed the impact of last season on recruiting. The class of 2025 is currently ranked among the best recruiting classes in the nation, with five committed players ranked as four-star recruits in the On3 Industry Rankings.

The impact of the Pinstripe Bowl win over Miami, before a national broadcast on ESPN, can’t be understated for Rutgers. It gave Schiano and his staff a bowl win over an elite name in college football.

That win sent a message that the Rutgers rebuild, set to enter its fifth season this fall, has staying power. The bowl game has become a part of the recruiting pitch for Rutgers.

And, given that the Scarlet Knights have a top-10 national class, it seems to be working.

“Going and beating a name brand like Miami in a game that,a lot of people saw – I think everything gets put into the equation,” Schiano said.

“So the relationships that are created by the coaches, our players do an incredible job on the recruiting visits making these guys understand they are going to be part of the solution. And it’s no secret, we need to be different. We’re not going to do it the same the ‘bluebloods’ do it and do it better than them and go flying by them. We got to be different. We go to do it our way, and our way is different. Usually, players know they want to be a part of it or they know they don’t.”

All told, the 2025 recruiting class has seven committed players who are ranked four-star recruits by either On3, Rivals, 247Sports or ESPN.

[lawrence-related id=39022,38992]

It is the highest rank for a Rutgers class since Schiano returned to the program. And, it has the potential to be the highest-ranked class that Rutgers has ever brought into the program.

There are some blue chip players for sure, including the likes of Under Armour All-American Jaelyne Matthews and recent running back commit [autotag]John Forster[/autotag]. But there is also a lot of quality and depth to this group.

And while the class features a number of four-star commits, there are also several under-the-radar players without the star rankings or big Power Five offers who are a part of the class. Schiano said that the evaluation of his coaches is paramount, as is the cultural fit into the program.

Rutgers, as a developmental program, does not get what Schiano calls the “ready-made” recruits. Instead, players are brought along and blended into roles within the program.

They develop and grow in the weight room and on the field before they are ready to make an impact.

[lawrence-related id=38904,38855,38758]

In the modern era of college football and the transfer football where instant gratification is the norm, not every recruit buys in Schiano’s philosophy for the program.

“Well, I really love the group and the guys that we have committed right now,” Schiano said.

“I think the reason (is that) our coaches do a great job of identifying the guys that are right for us. We don’t worry about their stars or who else is recruiting them. We really do a deep dive and evaluation on each kid- and it takes a lot of time. And my guys…I’m grateful that they put that time in. So it’s not only evaluating their film and evaluating their measurables but it’s evaluating the person. Are they a cultural fit for a program? And that takes the most time because how do you find that out those questions until you find out if this guy is a potential fit for our program.

“I think it’s even magnified now in this day and age.”

Taeshawn Alston announces his college commitment date.

Kamar Archie posts a recruitment update

Following a weekend official visit to Rutgers football, four-star linebacker [autotag]Kamar Archie[/autotag] is closing in on a decision and a commitment.

Archie is set to commit to a program in the next couple of weeks. Rutgers hosted him this past weekend during their final period for official visits.

He is a 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker at The Hun School (Princeton, New Jersey). On3 ranks Archie as the No. 196 player in the nation with Rivals ranking him as the No. 12 linebacker prospect in this recruiting class.

Rivals also places Archie as the seventh-best recruit in New Jersey in the class of 2025.

Archie is an absolute playmaker at linebacker. He is agile and quick but also is a hard-hitter.

On Wednesday, he posted an update on his social media about his Rutgers football official visit.

Over the weekend, Rutgers received a commitment from several recruits, including one who wasn’t even on an official visit.

John Forster, a four-star running back, took his official visit to Rutgers in late May and then made a surprise commitment announcement over the weekend.

[lawrence-related id=38972,38926,38966]

He is rated the fifth-best recruit in the nation according to Rivals.

The Rutgers 2025 recruiting, fresh off the momentum of last year’s 7-6 record and bowl win over Miami, is arguably the best in program history.

[lawrence-related id=38904]

Rutgers has the No. 10 recruiting class in the nation according to 247Sports. The Scarlet Knights are No. 18 nationally per the On3 rankings.

Rutgers football offers 4-star wide receiver Davion Brown

Rutgers football sent out a recent offer to Davion Brown, a four-star recruit.

Davion Brown, one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2026 class, was offered by Rutgers football this week.

Brown is rated as a four-star recruit by 247Sports. His offer comes as Rutgers is putting together one of the top recruiting classes in program history.

Rutgers currently has a top-10 recruiting class in the nation according to Rivals and 247Sports.

[lawrence-related id=38966,38922,38904]

They have five recruits ranked as five-star players in the On3 Industry Rankings.

Where does the Rutgers football ’25 recruiting class now stand in the rankings?

Rutgers football is putting together a very special class of 2025.

After a run of 18 commitments over the past three weeks, Rutgers football now has one of the top-ranked recruiting classes in the nation.

The Rutgers class, which has five commits who have four-star rankings in the On3 Industry Rankings, is very solid in terms of player projections.
According to Rivals, the Rutgers class is ranked sixth in the nation. Per the 247Sports rankings, the class is ninth.
This class has leaned heavily into in-state recruiting this cycle, with eight committed players from New Jersey. Florida, not surprisingly, is once again prime recruiting turf for Rutgers with five committed players.
(Last year, Florida had eight commits in the Rutgers class, the most of any state).
Now, there is a caveat to this news…the ranking for Rutgers is likely to start moving down in the coming weeks. With 26 committed players, Rutgers has one of the largest classes in the nation. While the quality of the players are quite good, there is likely to be significant movement from several big programs as they start to fill up their own classes.
[lawrence-related id=38922,38904]
The good news for Rutgers is that they made their targets early and got them.
This is a high-quality class that also has significant depth. It is an impressive job of recruiting by head coach Greg Schiano and his staff to say the least.

Rutgers football offers four-star recruit Kai Pritchard

Rutgers football has offered a class of 2026 recruit.

This week, Rutgers football made a scholarship offer to four-star recruit Kai Pritchard.

The Donovan High School (Toms River, New Jersey) product is ranked by 247Sports as the fifth best offensive lineman in New Jersey in the 2026 class. Due to his impressive play, he has received offers from Boston College, Duke, Illinois, James Madison, and Kentucky. In total he has received offers from 13 schools.

For Rutgers, their interest comes as no surprise. Pritchard is one of the state’s top prospects and would help improve an offensive line that has shown encouraging signs of late. The key for head coach Greg Schiano will be convincing Pritchard that Rutgers is the best place for him to spend his college career.

While Pritchard has plenty of options to choose from, he seemed impressed during his talk with head coach Greg Schiano.

He then posted on Monday afternoon about the flurry of hand-written letters the Rutgers staff sent him.

The offer came while Pritchard attended the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Camp.

Canaan Edwards commits to Rutgers football

Canaan Edwards committed to Rutgers football on Monday night.

On Monday night, Georgia edge rusher Canaan Edwards committed to Rutgers football. The verbal came after Edwards took an official visit to the Scarlet Knights over the weekend.

Rutgers is landing a player in Edwards who is very much under the radar and raw. This fall will be his second season of high school football for Archer (Lawrenceville, Georgia).

At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Edwards has the kind of size and length you can’t teach. Last year in his first season of organized football, he had 37 total tackles and five tackles for a loss.

He held Power Five offers from UCF and Rutgers. Edwards also was offered by Middle Tennessee State, Troy and USF among others.

Currently unranked, Edwards projects as a three-star player but has incredible upside and potential.

Edwards posted his commitment to Rutgers on social media:

The Rutgers recruiting class is ranked No. 18 in the nation by On3. It features five players who are four-star recruits in the On3 Industry Rankings.
