Raiders fall to the Broncos, finish the season at 7-9

Raiders fall to the Broncos, finish the season at 7-9

Heading into the final game of the season, the Oakland Raiders were somehow still alive for playoff contention. However, with the Titans defeating the Texans, the Raiders were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

It also didn’t help that the Raiders fell to the Broncos in a game that Oakland should have won. The Raiders made multiple mistakes in the game as they dropped far too many passes and had too many penalties. They lost on the final play of the game, failing to convert a two-point conversion.

While the Raiders didn’t make the playoffs, the team did make a step in the right direction. The team won four more games than what they did in the previous season and were competitive in several others. The Raiders will continue to look to build on this season as they move to Las Vegas in 2020.

Watch: Darren Waller shows off elite speed, takes screen pass 75 yards

You may not see another play that more perfectly showcases Darren Waller’s athleticism than this one. With the Raiders at their own 7-yard-line, Waller takes a screen pass behind the line and takes off and goes for 75 yards.

Unfortunately, Denzelle Good was flagged for a false start at the Denver 9-yard-line and the Raiders couldn’t get it back, settling for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

First hurdle cleared, Raiders will kickoff in Denver with playoff hopes alive

First hurdle cleared, Raiders will kickoff in Denver with playoff hopes alive

There was a chance the Raiders would be knocked out of the playoffs before they took the field for their season finale in Denver. The first hurdle in their convoluted playoff scenario was to be decided in the early games. That scenario is probably the easiest. It only required that one of four teams win their game. Meaning only if all four of these teams lost would the Raiders be out of contention before they took the field.

The four teams were the Patriots, Chargers, Bears, and Lions. Only one needed to win to keep the Raiders playoff hopes alive when they kick off Sunday afternoon.

With 30 minutes until kickoff in Denver, the Bears hit the game-winning field goal in Minnesota to beat the Vikings 21-19 and ensure the Raiders would be playing for something other than pride.

That leaves four more games that need to go a certain way for the Raiders to get in. First and foremost, they must beat the Broncos. They will also need help from the Texans and Ravens, both of whom are expected to rest their starters, and the Colts. So, it will still be a tough path to a playoff berth, but anything is possible.

Bad news for Raiders playoff hopes as Texans, Ravens expected to rest starters

Bad news for Raiders playoff hopes as Texans, Ravens expected to rest starters

In case you hadn’t heard, the Raiders need like five different things to happen for them to get in the playoffs. Their hopes for all five of those things to happen seems slim enough as it is and just got slimmer because one of those things is for the Texans to beat the Titans and the Texans are expected to rest their starters.

Whether the Texans win or not may not mean much. At this moment it’s between the third and the fourth seed which means, either way, they will be hosting a team in the wild card round. Fourth seed means they host the 5th seed and 3rd seed means they host the 6th seed.

The one game that will matter for the Texans seeding is the Chiefs game. The Chiefs play in the early going, so the Texans will know either at kickoff or shortly thereafter if anything they do will matter in the slightest. If the Chiefs beat the Chargers, the Texans will be the 4th seed regardless of whether they beat the Titans or not. And keep in mind, the Titans are fighting for their playoff lives, so you know they will come to play.

Another thing that needs to happen is for the Ravens to beat the Steelers. And, of course, the Ravens are also expected to rest their starters. The worst they could do is tied at 13-3 with the Patriots and since they beat the Patriots like a drum this season, they own the tiebreaker. So, they will be the number one seed regardless of what happens Sunday.

As for the Raiders, the other three things that need to happen for them to get into the playoffs are one of either the Patriots, Chargers, Lions, and Bears to win (we’ll know this one before the Raiders play), the Colts to beat the Jaguars, and, of course, the Raiders must beat the Broncos.

Josh Jacobs downgraded to OUT for Raiders vs Broncos

Josh Jacobs downgraded to OUT for Raiders vs Broncos

There didn’t seem like much of a chance Josh Jacobs would play this Sunday against the Broncos. Thus his listing as doubtful on the team’s final injury report Friday.

Saturday the team made it official, ruling Jacobs OUT for the game.

The rookie running back missed last week’s game against the Chargers with a shoulder injury he had been nursing since week seven. Then this week, on Christmas Day no less, he woke with a skin infection on his leg, further complicating his status. Though Gruden insisted Jacobs’s status was solely about his shoulder.

DeAndre Washington is expected to again replace Jacobs as he did last week. Washington ran for 85 yards on 23 carries (3.7 yards per carry) with a touchdown. Jalen Richard will see some snaps as well. The third running back is Rod Smith.

Jacobs’s regular season now over, he finishes with 1150 yards and 7 TD’s. That’s the most rushing yards by a Raiders back since Darren McFadden had 1157 yards rushing in 2010 and the second most in 23 years.

Raiders vs Broncos: Red hot rookies face off with potential playoff implications

Raiders vs Broncos: Red hot rookies face off with potential playoff implications

Just yesterday, the Raiders were looking at the possibility of being without two of their starting corners. Both Lamarcus Joyner and Trayvon Mullen were not at practice as both had injured themselves in last week’s game against the Chargers.

While the injury bug wasn’t treating the Raiders well, the playoff scenario sure was. They needed five games to go their way in order to stay in the hunt and all five of them did, making their game on Sunday in Denver consequential.

Had they been knocked out of the playoffs last week, there would be no urgency to get Joyner and Mullen back on the field. But now this game could mean something. Granted they will still need several other games to go their way, but most of them won’t have happened before the Raiders take the field, so they will want all hands on deck because they will have more than just pride to play for.

Mullen, in particular, had a scary hit in the game that had him wheeled out on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. Tests revealed he did not have a concussion and he was cleared by Friday for his neck injury. Good thing too because he has been the best cornerback on the team of late, so his participation will be important.

“He’s playing real good,” defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said of Mullen. “He’s understanding each and every game plan is a little bit different. His technique has been real good. He’s been tackling real good and I think he’s only going to get better. It’s a good pick up for us and he’s going to have a bright future here.”

The Raiders selected Mullen at 40 overall in the draft. Two picks later, the Broncos selected Missouri QB Drew Lock

This isn’t the same Broncos team they faced in the first game of the season. Joe Flacco is no longer the quarterback, it’s rookie Drew Lock and he’s been playing lights out since being named the starter four weeks ago.

“The young quarterback, Drew Lock, has really energized their offense,” said Jon Gruden. “He’s made some tight-window throws, some really ridiculously impressive throws.”

The Broncos have gone 3-1 since Lock was named the starter, throwing 6 TD’s to 3 Interceptions.

Though Mullen has just one interception this season, he has had 9 pass breakups since being named the starter in week 8.

If you want to go further, the Broncos also have rookie tight end Noah Fant who has come on over the latter half of the season, while the Raiders have rookie defensive end Maxx Crosby who leads the team with 8.5 sacks.

Neither of these two teams look the same as they did when they met in week one. Joe Flacco was the Broncos QB and Fant got off to a slow start. Mullen was Crosby barely saw the field for the Raiders. Now those rookies could be the key to whether the Raiders can hold up their end in playing for the postseason or if the Broncos can play spoiler.
