It’s not fair to say that Miami was exposed by Clemson, but let’s just say that in hindsight, beating UAB, Louisville and Florida State wasn’t as big a deal as it seemed when the Canes got to 3-0.

Miami has two massive issues – penalties and pass defense.

The Canes were flagged 15 times against the Tigers and 11 times against Louisville – they make way too many mistakes. The secondary is the biggest concern.

Louisville was able to stay alive with over 300 yards and three touchdowns, and Trevor Lawrence and company had few issues last week moving the ball.

Playing five games has something to do with it, but Pitt’s Kenny Pickett leads the nation in total passing yards. He’s coming off a rocky game, but he’s a veteran passer who stepped up his game this year and should be able to push the Cane corners a bit. However …

Why Miami Will Win

This is Pickett’s fourth crack at Miami. He engineered the big win at the end of the 2017 season, but he’s been awful against the Canes over the last two years.

Besides missing the two-point conversion, what went wrong in the 31-30 loss to Boston College? The secondary was ripped to shreds.

Sort of like Miami’s schedule in the first three games made everything look great, Pitt’s dates with Austin Peay, Syracuse and Louisville weren’t any big whoop. The Panthers might be two points away from being 5-0, but they were lit up through the air by NC State and Boston College over the last two weeks.

Enter D’Eriq King, who’s coming off a rough day against Clemson, but is just the sort of playmaker who should be able to give Pitt a whole slew of problems on the move. The Canes will try to pound away, but King is going to be too accurate to not balance out the O.

What’s Going To Happen

The Pitt pass rush will keep King from going off, but there won’t be enough of a running game to control the tempo. Miami – when it’s working – has been very, very deliberate, holding the ball for 33 minutes per game. It’ll have the ball for ten minutes longer than the Panthers will.

Why Pitt Will Win

The Boston College defense isn’t coming up with third down stops, and the offense can’t run the ball. It’s last in the ACC in both categories.

The Eagle passing game has been good under new head coach Jeff Hafley, but the ground attack has failed to hit the 90-yard mark in any of the first three games and is averaging a painful 2.4 yards per carry.

On the other side, offenses are having too easy a time moving the sticks against the Eagles, connecting on almost 54% of their chances.

The Pitt run defense has allowed more than 62 yards once in the four games allowing fewer than two yards per carry. And third down conversions? The Panthers are clicking at a solid 45% clip.

Why Boston College Will Win

Phil Jurkovec has been terrific.

The Notre Dame transfer has been the quarterback the Eagles needed, stepping right in and clicking for two 300+ yard days and a 210-yard outing in his three appearances. He’s been a good decision-maker from the start, he’s been accurate, and he has helped the new coaching staff change around the offense.

Jurkovec has thrown two picks, but the team has yet to lose a fumble. The team is +5 in turnover margin and has to hold up and force Pitt into a few big mistakes.

Pitt’s been great in the time of possession battle, but BC is great at controlling the clock, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College can’t be one-dimensional, and it’s going to be.

Pitt leads the ACC in pass defense, the fantastic pass rush will come through when needed, and BC won’t have the running game to rely on when needed in the second half.

Why NC State Will Win

The Wolfpack D has struggled so far, and it needs all the parts to work. The passing game has to be far sharper than it was in the loss to Virginia Tech, but overall the running game hasn’t been bad.

Ricky Person went off in the win over Wake Forest, and there was just enough against the Hokies – Person averaged five yards per carry and Zonovan Knight ran for 94 – to have done more if the team didn’t get behind so quickly.

State has to be sharper, it has to establish itself on the ground right away, and the offensive line has to hold up under the pressure that’s coming. However …

Why Pitt Will Win

The Pitt pass rush has been suffocating.

The nation’s best sacking team last year has gotten it all going again, hitting Louisville time and again with seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss. How did the NC State offensive line do last week against Virginia Tech? Awful.

The Pack gave up six sacks and too many pressures, and the offensive front was actually better than the defensive side.

It’s been ugly. The State D line gave up four rushing touchdowns against Wake Forest, and last week got destroyed for 314 yards and three scores as Virginia Tech came up with gashing run after gashing run. Pitt’s ground game hasn’t gotten going yet, and this should be the start.

What’s Going To Happen

The NC State lines aren’t going to handle Pitt in the trenches. Nothing is stopping Rashad Weaver, Patrick Jones, and the rest of the Panther pass rushers for a defense that’s coming though time and again.

The Pitt offense might not go crazy, but it’ll get up early and let the D do the rest.

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals might have lost to Miami, but the passing game still works.

They blew past the 300-yard mark through the air in the first two games, with Malik Cunningham getting off to a great start, and they’re about to give Pitt a battle.

The Panthers haven’t had any problems so far in easy wins over Austin Peay and Syracuse, but now the secondary is going to get pressured with the quick-hitting Cardinal attack.

The offensive line hasn’t been bad so far in pass protection, and it should be able to be just good enough to keep Cunningham from being under constant attack.

Why Pitt Will Win

Kenny Pickett has been fantastic so far.

The Panther quarterback only threw 13 touchdown passes and nine picks last year, but he hit 70% of his passes with three scores and an interception in the first two games. Now he’s about to roll against a Cardinal secondary coming off a rough day against Miami – D’Eriq King threw for 325 yards and three scores.

And then there’s the pass rush.

Yes, Louisville was able to hold up a bit against the Hurricanes, but the Panthers have the defensive front that should be among the nation’s best for a second straight year. It hammered Syracuse for seven sacks – the Orange line is awful – and it’ll at least do enough to be a bother.

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt will finally get a battle.

Louisville will throw well – Tutu Atwell hit Miami for 114 yards and two touchdown catches last week – but it can’t be -3 in turnover margin again, and it’ll be close.

Pitt will rely more on the running game and the defense than Pickett, and it’ll control the time of possession enough to keep Cunningham on the sidelines for close to 35 minutes.

Why Syracuse Will Win

Oh sure, the Pitt offense worked against Austin Peay, but now it has to go against a much, much stronger secondary and better defense overall.

The 31-6 loss to North Carolina might not look great on the scoreboard, but Syracuse hung tough for three quarters before buckling in the fourth. It wasn’t a sharp effort in any way by the Orange offense that looked like it needed a game of prep work.

It’s possible this is a far stronger attack this week – QB Tommy DeVito wasn’t quite on the same page with his receivers in key moments.

Even so, again, it was a battle for 45 minutes with the secondary keeping QB Sam Howell and his great receiving corps from rolling until late. However …

Why Pitt Will Win

The North Carolina defensive front spent most of the game wearing DeVito as a hat.

The Syracuse offensive line was awful last year in pass protection, and it did next to nothing against the Tar Heels allowing seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and generating just 68 rushing yards.

Syracuse, meet the pass rush that was the best in the nation in 2019 and is still very, very good.

Pitt didn’t exactly pull punches in the 55-0 win over Austin Peay, but up 42-0 at halftime the D didn’t show all it could do. It came up with three sack snd eight tackles for loss, but it seemed like it was saving itself.

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse will be a bit better than it was against North Carolina, and it still won’t be enough.

No, the Pitt offense isn’t going to roll up six touchdowns in the first half, and it’s not going to hold the Orange rushing game to 1 net yard – both happened against Austin Peay – but the defense will take over in key situations, will finish with at least five sacks, and it’ll look the part of a team that should be a sleeper throughout the 2020 ACC chase.
