Why Louisville Will Win

So what’s wrong with Louisville?

There are a few too many breakdowns on special teams and third down defense, the turnovers are flying off the shelves, and the offense hasn’t been able to dominate like it was supposed to.

However, the team does a nice job of controlling the tempo – even if the scores are coming in bunches from the other side – and for all the problems and all of the issues, the upside is there to start doing a whole lot more.

To make this easy, QB Malik Cunningham has to be a whole lot sharper, and the offense has to be explosive. This is still a team capable of putting it all together against a Notre Dame team that’s beaten a fat load of no one so far.

The Irish D is playing well, but it’s not forcing takeaways. Stop with the mistakes, Louisville – – 11 turnovers so far and three in each of the last three games – and this all flips.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Yeah, Notre Dame hasn’t beaten anyone so far – strange to say with Florida State on the schedule – but it needed the tune-ups.

The defense had to replace a whole slew of key parts, and it’s coming through great. It’s second in the nation in third down stops – teams are converting just 18% of the time – and there hasn’t been any real drama yet because no one is getting anything going on the ground.

And no, the defense isn’t taking the ball away enough, but the offense isn’t putting that D in a bad position with just two turnovers so far. This isn’t a thrill-ride of a team like Alabama or Clemson, but it’s rock-solid.

Louisville isn’t.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

The Irish lines have been great. Louisville has enough punch to come up with a few scores and keep this interesting into the fourth quarter, but the trenches are going to be an issue as Notre Dame keeps this simple and grinds out drives with a decent, relatively conservative balance in a good win.

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Florida State isn’t right yet.

It’s making a quarterback change – more on that in a moment – and it was able to wake up in time to beat Jacksonville State with easy, but there’s absolutely no pass rush, there’s little production in the backfield, and the secondary is giving up plays in chunks.

Miami ran for 200 yards, and it could’ve been a whole lot uglier. All three teams on the slate so far – including that Jacksonville State team from the FCS, and a Georgia Tech team that’s not exactly Kansas City winging it around – he thrown for 244 yards or more.

Notre Dame has only played two bad teams before having to take a few weeks off, but the defense was dominant against both Duke and USF. Neither team was able to move the ball on third downs, and neither one was able to get the passing game going.

Don’t turn the ball over, pound away with the strong offensive front right away, and do what Miami did and run, run, and run some more.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Florida State Will Win

Okay, Jordan Travis. Let’s see if you can get this thing moving.

James Blackman is a good passer but he doesn’t take off and run. It’s not like head coach Mike Norvell’s offense needs a mobile quarterback, but there has to be some rushing element to the mix.

That’s Travis, who hit 13-of-20 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown with a pick, and he’s been able to step in and run a bit in the first three games.

Yeah, Notre Dame has been dominant so far, but again, Duke and USF aren’t very good at college football this year, and don’t discount what it did to the program to not be able to play over the last few weeks.

The FSU offense has actually moved a bit – and not just against Jacksonville State – but the drives aren’t going anywhere. If the defense can holdup against the Irish running game, make Ian Book throw to win, and hope Travis can be special on the other side.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State needed that second half against Jacksonville State. Don’t discount just how important it was to simply find something positive to build off of after problem after problem since Norvell took over.

This certainly isn’t going to be 1993 when it comes to the powerhouse nature of the matchup.

This is a talented Seminole squad that underachieved over the first three games. The defensive front isn’t going to be able to hold up against a Notre Dame team that will be sluggish for three quarters before finally taking over late.

Notre Dame women’s soccer dominates Syracuse

Notre Dame’s women’s soccer team had more goals on Sunday than Syracuse had shots on goal. Details to ND’s latest win here.

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team dominated Syracuse on Sunday and won their third straight contest with a 2-0 win.

Kiki Van Zanten handled the scoring for Irish as her first goal of the day came just before halftime at the 42 minute mark and was assisted by Brooke Van Dyck.

Van Zanten’s second goal of the day came with just minutes remaining the contest as she scored at the 89′ mark to cap the scoring by giving Notre Dame a 2-0 lead.

The win kept Notre Dame unbeaten all-time at home against Syracuse, a series that has now seen nine games, none of which Syracuse has even scored in.

Notre Dame’s defense was so stout on Sunday in fact that goalkeeper Mattie Interian had to make just one stop to record the shutout.

The win was Notre Dame’s third straight and moved the Irish to 3-1-0 on the year while Syracuse dropped to 0-3-0.

Notre Dame returns to action when they host Wake Forest on October 15.

BREAKING: Notre Dame President Jenkins Tests Positive for COVID-19

The ongoing pandemic now is affecting the top of the most prominent institution in South Bend, Indiana.

The ongoing pandemic now is affecting the top of the most prominent institution in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame’s President, the Rev. John Jenkins, has tested positive for COVID-19. Without going too much into Jenkins’ recent activities, this tweet and accompanying email sums it all up:

A day ahead of this news, Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated wrote about how Notre Dame has not done well leading the way with the virus. Forde particularly signaled out Jenkins and Brian Kelly. It’s almost as if he could see this coming only a short time out.

We have kept tabs on Notre Dame news related to COVID-19 from the moment it first affected the university. During the current school year, several unpleasant experiences have been reported by infected students. Now, we have the perfect metaphor for what’s been going on there.

We should be far past the point of knowing this virus is not going away anytime soon. It can’t be said enough:  Wash your hands, social distance, don’t touch your face, and above all, wear a mask. We have more than enough evidence to show what can happen if you don’t. It’s time to follow the science.

Notre Dame Women’s Soccer Takes on Boston College Thursday

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team looks to get back above .500 when they host Boston College on Thursday.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame women’s soccer team is back on campus to kick off its home slate of games this fall on Thursday night against the Boston College Eagles. After going 1-1 in the opening weekend of the season on the road, the Irish begin a four-game homestand that will occur over the next few weeks. Thursday’s match will be the second nationally televised game for the Irish, as the game will air on the ACC Network.

KNOW THE OPPONENT: BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES

  • The Irish will renew acquaintances with a conference foe that they have not faced since 2015 in Boston College.
  • The Irish own a 12-1-1 record all time against the Eagles and in their most recent game against Boston College, Notre Dame came away with a 2-0 win at Alumni Stadium on Oct. 11, 2015.
  • The two goals from the Irish came from twin sisters Taylor and Kaitlin Klawunder for Notre Dame’s 10th win of the season.
  • Notre Dame holds a 7-0 record at home against Boston College and four of those games ended in a shutout for the Irish.
  • Boston College opens the 2020 season Thursday night against the Irish and are coming off an 8-8-2 campaign in 2019.

GOALS, GOALS, GOALS IN THE WIN OVER MIAMI

  • The Notre Dame offense came out in full force in its 6-0 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Sept. 20.
  • The Irish scored six goals, the most they have had in a game since 2015 when they defeated Valparaiso by the same scoreline (6-0).
  • It was also the biggest conference win since the Irish have joined the ACC in 2013.
  • It is the largest margin of victory in a conference game since 2012 when they were in the BIG EAST and defeated Cincinnati 7-0 on Sept. 16.
  • The six goals marked the most scored in a road game since 2008 when the Irish defeated Cincinnati 6-0 on Sept. 28.

HATS ALL AROUND FOR VAN ZANTEN

  • The Buffalo Grove, Ill. native came off the bench and scored three goals for her first career hat trick in the 6-0 win.
  • Van Zanten scored all three goals in just 34 minutes of game action for the second straight hat trick for the Irish against Miami after Sammi Fisher tallied one last season against the Hurricanes.
  • It is the 70th hat trick of all-time for the Irish and she is the youngest player to record a hat trick since Cari Roccaro in her sophomore year in 2013 against No. 21 Maryland.

IRISH RETURN TO FRIENDLY CONFINES OF ALUMNI STADIUM

Notre Dame (1-0) vs USF (1-0) Game Preview

Why USF Will Win

Can the running game possibly keep this up?

New head coach Jeff Scott stepped in, and the Bull ground attack instantly started to work, running for 302 yards and two scores in the 27-6 win over The Citadel with big gash after big gash.

USF was 4-0 last season when running for 200 yards or more, and as a program has won 27 straight when coming up with 205 yards or more.

Notre Dame isn’t The Citadel, but the offensive line was able to get on the move last week with a good tempo, the running backs ripped off big run after big run, and it has a shot to keep the Irish on their heels if they can be as sharp as they were to open things up. However …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Notre Dame defensive front that stuffed Duke for 73 rushing yards – allowing fewer than three yards per carry – has the linebacking corps to keep the big runs to a minimum.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was a dominant force against the Blue Devils, and while star safety Kyle Hamilton is banged up with an ankle injury, this is still a group that’s not going to get toughed like The Citadel was.

Even with all of the success against an FCS team, the Bulls had a hard time putting the game away. The passing game won’t be able to stretch the field on the Notre Dame secondary, and scoring points will be like pulling teeth to close out drives.

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

USF will be okay, but the Irish will be sharper.

The Bull offense will come up with a few of the big runs that Duke wasn’t able to, but it won’t be enough as Ian Book and the Notre Dame attack gets out to a better start than it did last week. USF will have to throw in the second half, and it won’t work.

Notre Dame to resume in-person classes next week

In what University president John Jenkins called one of Notre Dame’s greatest comebacks the University is set to return to in-person classes

A week and a half ago the University of Notre Dame was on the brink of closing their campus and sending all of their students home after a COVID-19 outbreak on campus.

“Together, we are writing one of the great comebacks in Notre Dame history” said Rev. John Jenkins, President of the University of Notre Dame on Friday morning.

This comes after COVID-19 testing has shown a steady decline of the virus being present on campus, Friday seeing just 2.4% of tests comeback positive.

Notre Dame Professors Write Letter Against Sending Students Home

On Sunday, Notre Dame responded to an editorial written in the student newspaper, The Observer, about the university’s response to COVID-19.

On Sunday, Notre Dame responded to an editorial written in the student newspaper, The Observer, about the university’s response to COVID-19. Now, five professors from four different departments, none of them related to health or science, have decided to speak out. The Observer published a letter co-authored by these professors Tuesday.

The letter argues that closing down the university would adversely affect the students in ways beyond a lack of in-person education. Specifically, the professors worry that an isolated college experience would be detrimental to the students both socially and psychologically. What’s more, they would not be able to be tested or supervised on campus and might even be more at risk since they’d likely go out in their hometowns.

While it’s true that students have lost a lot during this pandemic, including a normal college experience, it’s all happening for a reason. Call it overabundance if you want, but until this virus is contained to a reasonable degree and/or a vaccine is developed, the option of sending students home can’t be ruled out. Almost every day, we’re seeing new rules and regulations being put in place as dictated by the progression of the virus, so plans for every scenario must be kept on the table. Though it’s unfortunate, it’s a result of the new normal: one that seems to place physical health above all other types.
