Why North Texas Will Win

The passing game continues to be fantastic.

The offense leads Conference USA in yards per game averaging 550 yards per game with a league-high 347 passing yards per game.

The downfield attack is there with 305 yards or more through the air in all four games with Austin Aune finding his groove. He might not be all that accurate – completing 56% of his passes – but he’s averaging 8.8 yards per throw.

The Middle Tennessee run defense has been the bigger problem so far, but when teams have tried to throw, the success follows.

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The Blue Raiders are starting to get better. It hasn’t been easy, and it’s been a brutally rough start, but the passing game is starting to kick in for an offense that’s playing up to its potential.

There are too many turnovers and too many missed opportunities, but halfway through the campaign it might be when everything turns a corner after the win over FIU.

On the other side, the defense hasn’t been totally miserable after a rough first few games. The run defense has been okay against the teams that don’t have dominant ground games – North Texas doesn’t have a dominant ground game – and it’s been okay at limiting the big plays down the field.

What’s Going To Happen

North Texas couldn’t stop you and a few friends for throwing for 300 yards.

Middle Tennessee can move the ball however it wants to in what should be a wild and crazy shootout. Expect the two teams to combine for 1,000 yards and a whole lot of fun, big plays with the defenses taking the day off.

Why Charlotte Will Win

There’s the passing game.

The 49ers might have lost to Florida Atlantic 21-17, but Chris Reynolds returned from getting banged up against Appalachian State to hit 75% of his passes for 314 yards and a touchdown.

Now it’s time to have some fun – the North Texas defense hasn’t done a whole lot to stop anyone’s passing game. The Mean Green are allowing well over 300 passing yards per game with a whole lot of big shots down the field.

On the other side, the pass defense has been great in the first two games, keeping ASU from going off – allowing 204 yards – and all but shutting down FAU.

Why North Texas Will Win

For all of the problems the North Texas defense had over the first three games, the offense has been a ton of fun.

Austin Aune leads the way for a passing attack that’s blown past the 300-yard mark in each of the first three games with nine scores. The Mean Green will keep pressing and keep bombing away for a full four quarters.

It’s only a two-game sample size, but so far Charlotte is having a hard time on third downs. It’s going to have to hold serve to keep up with this North Texas attack.

North Texas is going to keep bombing away, but Charlotte will do its part to make this a battle.

The 49er running game hasn’t been able to do too much so far, but it’s about to rip through a UNT run D that allowed 568 rushing yards and seven scores over the last two games.

Why North Texas Will Win

The passing game is back.

The Mean Green offense sputtered and struggled late last season, failing to hit the 270-yard mark in any of the last three games and not hitting 300 yards in seven of the last 11 games. UNT has thrown for over 300 yards in each of the first two games.

Jason Bean started out the season well, and Austin Aune bombed away when he got his time in the blowout loss to SMU. The downfield passing attack should work just find against a Southern Miss defense that’s allowed nine touchdown passes in the first three games, and that’s not all that’s coming.

North Texas has a running game, too. The offense has punched out 572 yards and six scores on the ground in the first two games.

The USM defensive front got hit by Tulane for 430 rushing yards the last time out.

Why Southern Mississippi Will Win

The Southern Miss offense is okay.

North Texas might be getting its offense working, but the defense has been a total disaster. Houston Baptist is firing away on everyone, so 480 passing yards and three touchdowns from Bailey Zappe and the attack weren’t crazy, but giving up 710 total yards to SMU hurt.

By a mile, North Texas has the worst defense in the nation so far among teams with more than one game. This is where the Southern Miss attack kicks in.

For all of the problems, the passing game has been fine. This is a better team than it’s shown so far, so …

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Miss is overdue to come up with a good game.

North Texas might have he firepower, but the defense is too awful to hold on once USM QB Jack Abraham and the passing game get going. Expect a whole lot of points, a whole lot of big plays, and enough explosion to make this among the day’s wildest games.

Why SMU Will Win

The passing game was rusty in the 31-24 win over Texas State, but it should work just fine against the North Texas secondary.

Granted, Houston Baptist QB Bailey Zappe ripped up Texas Tech, too, but he warmed up in a 57-31 loss to North Texas with 480 passing yards and three touchdowns, having no problems getting time to throw with little pressure from the Mean Green defensive front.

Mustang QB Shane Buechele won’t have any problems hitting the 300-yard mark, TJ McDaniel should push for another 100-yard rushing day, and the offense will get to 500 yards as long as it’s a whole lot sharper early on than it was against Texas State, because …

Why North Texas Will Win

It took way too much work to put away an inferior team.

SMU came up with a ton of yards and it got the win, but there were too many stalls and it was 21-21 late in the third before finally getting some breathing room.

It might have been against Houston Baptist, but North Texas showed signs that the offensive issues of 2019 might be over. Jason Bean and the passing game rolled from the start, and the ground attack ripped off big run after big run averaging over seven yards per carry.

The UNT offensive front isn’t anything amazing, but it should hold its own against the SMU defensive line that’s going to struggle all year against the run.

What’s Going To Happen

The SMU-Texas State game was going to be a shootout, and it wasn’t.

This one should be a blast.

The North Texas offense will keep pressing, the SMU offense won’t ever be able to rest, and both passing games will hit big play after big play. Expect well over 1,000 yards of total offense with SMU being a bit more effective when it has to be.
