Fraser McConnell was the victor as the Nitrocross season kicked off in Oklahoma.

The Dreyer & Reinbold JC driver started the final from pole position and resisted a charge from Kris Meeke to secure his second victory in Nitrocross’ premier Group E class.

The final was reduced in length from six laps to three as a result of track conditions caused by the extreme heat. However, with the course at MidAmerica Outdoors being the longest in series history, the overall length of the final race itself was no shorter than ther series’ previous mains.

Racing into the first banked turn, McConnell forced Robin Larsson wide, negating the challenge from the reigning series champion, but opening the door for the rest of the field to sneak through. Meeke capitalized on that, rocketing from fourth on the grid and sneaking through a gap in the first corner melee to snatch second.

McConnell took the joker on lap one to gap the field further with Larsson following him into the shortcut. Meeke took that route a lap later, but not before pitching his car onto two wheels after the start/finish straight as he pushed to overhaul McConnell and the chasing Larsson.

Meeke emerged from the joker on-par with Larsson and quickly disposed of the Swede, and he set about getting by McConnell next, but a door-to-door collision broke his car’s suspension, ending what stood to be an immense battle for the win.

McConnell brought his car home virtually unchallenged after the final lap, ahead of Larsson and Kevin Eriksson who inherited the final podium spot after Meeke’s issue, plus a last-lap joker.

Conner Martell finished fourth, ahead of Vermont SportsCar teammate Travis Pastrana, who hit a wall while trying to avoid Andreas Bakkerud, himself trying to navigate round the slow Meeke. Meeke took sixth, with Bakkerud collecting seventh and Conor Daly eighth in his first appearance in a rallycross-like event

Ahead of the final, Martell, Pastrana and Larsson shared the Preliminary round wins, while in the heats, Bakkerud and McConnell backed up their Battle bracket performance to win again, while Robin Larsson took the third ahead of Kevin Eriksson.

Bakkerud’s win came in a slimmed down two-car grid with Benito Guerra sitting out the day due to injury. A spin for Oliver Eriksson on the first lap further helped Bakkerud’s cause in what became a routine victory.

The last heat featured a thrilling start with Robin Larsson beating Kevin Eriksson at his own game by flying round the outside of the opening banked turn. The elder Eriksson brother continued applying the pressure though, while resisting a charge from Martell. An attempt to sneak up the inside for Pastrana at the start didn’t pay off, leaving him at the back of the pack.

Victories at the heat stage locked Bakkerud, McConnell, and Larsson into the final with the rest contesting a brace of Last Chance Qualifiers.

Martell won the first LCQ from Daly and Bennett, while the second came to an abrupt end after first lap contact between Pastrana and Kevin Eriksson pitched Pastrana into a roll and ripped the left rear wheel off Kevin Eriksson’s car. Bennett missed out on a final berth, however, with the tiebreaker coming down to qualifying performance rather than round performance.

Oliver Erikkson, who was also set to feature in the second LCQ, failed to make the start after succumbing to a motor issue, compounding a tricky day for him that began with gearbox problems. As a result, Meeke was the obvious winner of LCQ 2.

Kevin Eriksson, Andreas Bakkerud, and Fraser McConnell hold the advantage after the first part of the Nitrocross season opener at Mid America Outdoors in Oklahoma.

A new format for the 2023-24 season sees the fastest driver from each timed practice group go into a “Top Qualifier” session – a single lap contest – and the next three going into another qualifying group, and so on.

Qualifying decides lineups for “Battle Heats” with the winners of those heats advancing to the “Battle Final.” Those drivers also bypass the preliminary round the following day. The remainder of the field race through preliminary heats, heats, and Last Chance Qualifiers to determine the spots in the eight-car final.

Friday, the first day of the two-day event, featured a condensed schedule after storms forced a delay in the action. Travis Pastrana was the top qualifier in mixed conditions, setting a time of 1m26.365s, 0.333s ahead of Fraser McConnell, with Robin Larsson failing to complete his lap in the TQ group.

Andreas Bakkerud topped the second group with the fastest lap of the session – 1m26.038s – but wasn’t in the top group so didn’t claim session honors. He bested Kris Meeke and Kevin Eriksson. Oliver Eriksson was fastest in Q3 ahead of IndyCar racer Conor Daly and Benito Guerra, while a puncture for Conor Martell meant that Oliver Bennett was the only driver to set a time in Q3.

In the first of the three battle heats, Kevin Eriksson made a strong start, sweeping round the outside of the opening high banked turn, reminiscent of his viral “round the outside” move at Estering in the World Rallycross championship in 2016. He then took the joker – a shortcut that needs to be taken once per race – on the first of three laps, with the reigning champion staying out in clear air, only jokering on the final lap in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to get by.

McConnell won the second after leading in convincing fashion early on, although a charging Meeke closed the gap by race end, but couldn’t find a way past as dust levels rose as the track continued to dry after the morning’s rain.

Oliver Eriksson looked like he would emulate his older brother in the third Battle Heat, taking an early lead round the outside of the first turn, but as Pastrana looked up the inside, Bakkerud snuck through the middle to take a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Punctures for the remaining three runners, which also included Bennett, ensured an easy win for Bakkerud.

While originally scheduled for Friday evening, the Battle Final moved to Saturday morning. Once again, Kevin Eriksson swept round the outside of the track’s signature banked turn to lead early, but McConnell was chasing.

An early joker for Eriksson gave him a cushion out in front, while McConnell had to contend with a hounding Bakkerud. After jokering on the second lap, McConnell was right on Eriksson’s tail, and it was a similar story a lap later when Bakkerud jokered and emerged just ahead of the Jamaican. The duo exchanged positions for the next three turns, with Bakkerud prevailing, only for a 3s penalty for avoidable contact reversing the positions once more. The squabble over second helped Kevin Eriksson cement his Battle Final victory, crossing the finish line with a left rear puncture.

Saturday’s action leads to an eight-car, six-lap final, the victor of which will be declared the round winner.

Conor Daly will race in this weekend’s Nitrocross season opener at the Visions off-road festival in Oklahoma for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

In what will be his first race outing since departing Ed Carpenter Racing in the NTT Data IndyCar series, Daly will drive for the championship-winning team alongside Fraser McConnell, whose return was announced last week.

“I’m incredibly excited to join Dreyer & Reinbold Racing JC and compete in the upcoming Nitrocross race in Oklahoma,” said Daly. “The chance to test my abilities in this intense, adrenaline-fueled series is something I’ve been anticipating. I’m grateful to the team for believing in me and providing this incredible opportunity.

“I can’t wait to get behind the wheel and showcase what we can achieve together. I also want to thank Travis Pastrana and Nitrocross for all of their help and effort in getting this program together.”

Team owner Dennis Reinbold was pleased to secure Daly’s services, saying that his varied resume will help the reigning champions to keep moving forward.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Daly to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing JC for the first round of the 2023-24 Nitrocross season,” he said. “Conor’s proven talent and racing prowess make him an ideal addition to our team. We have no doubt that his unique skills will significantly contribute to our success in this thrilling motorsport discipline.”

Daly joins a field that also includes five-time World Rally winner Kris Meeke and Oliver Bennett (XITE Energy Racing), Kevin and Oliver Eriksson and 2012 Production World Rally champion and 2019 Race of Champions winner Benito Guerra (Olsbergs MSE), and Travis Pastrana and Conner Martell (Vermont SportsCar).

While it will be Daly’s first start in a rallycross-like event, he’s not a stranger to the discipline. Following the conclusion of the 2016 Global Rallycross season, Daly tested the Olsbergs MSE Honda Civic supercar in Los Angeles.

The test came about thanks to Daly’s relationship with Honda, whom he was then competing for in IndyCar with Dale Coyne Racing, and while his race debut comes almost seven years after that first test, he did tell this writer at the time that he was a fan of the discipline and that he’d “definitely take an opportunity (to race in rallycross) should one present itself.

In the intervening years he has taken part in rallycross and off-road events on iRacing, and has also competed alongside 2021 Nitrocross champion Pastrana in NASCAR.

Built on what the series calls “a virtually blank canvas”, the track that Daly will compete on is the most dramatic the championship – formerly known as Nitro Rallycross – has constructed to date, and encompasses an overall elevation change of over 150-feet.

“This track has such amazing natural elevation,” said Pastrana. “We decided to work more with the existing terrain and make it fun and unique with elements we couldn’t build anywhere else.

“Our goal is to make multiple lines in almost every corner so different driving styles will shine through.”

The track begins with a tarmac start straight with a dramatic descent into the mostly dirt course, leading into a banked hairpin turn, the biggest of its kind ever constructed for rallycross and rallycross-like competition.

A sequence of five snaking hairpins follows, before a brace of sweeping bends onto a tabletop jump. There, the track splits, a left-hand turn going into the joker lap – which needs to be taken once per race – and a right that leads to a run under the tabletop. The main lap and the joker rejoin at the end of the lap, just before a left sweep before the banked turn once again.

The track is the 10th to feature in Nitrocross since it began in 2018 and Pastrana said it’ll continue to evolve over the coming years.

“We’re just getting started. Every year it will evolve,” he said. “The goal is to be able to run most of the track forward and backward. We will concrete some turns and pave others.

“There will be an option to run a dirt section that we can change from year-to-year and run everything from Lemons cars to Supermoto to off-road trucks. MidAmerica in Oklahoma looks to be the best track on the Nitrocross circuit this year and it will only get better from here.”

Fraser McConnell has become the first driver to be confirmed for the upcoming Nitrocross season.

The Jamaican will once again drive for Dreyer & Reinbold in the series’ premier Group E category, having raced for the team last season, when the championship was known as Nitro Rallycross.

“I’m beyond excited to be back with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing for the upcoming Nitrocross season,” said McConnell. “The team’s dedication and unwavering support have played a significant role in my success, and I’m looking forward to continuing our journey together. We have unfinished business, and I’m determined to bring home the championship title this year.”

McConnell took a maiden series victory at Glen Helen Raceway last year, leading home a DRR one-two-three ahead of eventual series champion Robin Larsson and Andreas Bakkerud. He eventually finished the season third overall, behind Larsson and Bakkerud, with a further three podiums.

“Fraser’s talent on the track is unparalleled, and we are thrilled to have him back for the 2023-24 Nitrocross season,” said team owner Dennis Reinbold. “His exceptional performance last year showcased his potential, and we firmly believe that with his skill set and dedication, he will be a major factor in the championship fight. We are fully committed to providing him with the resources and support necessary to excel and look forward to another fantastic season ahead.”

McConnell will also dovetail his Nitrocross commitments with a continued presence in Extreme E, where he races for Lewis Hamilton’s X44 Vida Carbon Racing team alongside Cristina Gutierrez. He claimed his first win in the category last month at the Hydro X Prix in Scotland.

The 2023-24 Nitrocross season begins on June 16-17 with the opening round at the Visions Off-Road festival in Jay, Oklahoma. Series pioneer and 2021 champion Travis Pastrana, and rising American star Conner Martell are among the other drivers expected to join McConnell on the grid this season.
