Cowboys Weekend News: Diggs Boys together? 30 draft visits lining up

The latest state of the Cowboys roster, Dallas has taken 6 of their 30 prospect visits, and Greg Zeurlein joins the Jets. | From @AsaHenry_55

The majority of the dust has settled for Dallas in free agency, so how is their depth chart shaping up? Take a look at the Cowboys roster from multiple different angles, including a position-by-position assessment and an explanation as to why Dallas may be due for some regression in 2022.

Dallas must now turn to what is traditionally their biggest team-building tool, the upcoming NFL draft, to continue the improvement of their squad. With a number of needs it can be tough to tell who the Cowboys are interested in, but their 30 official visits will help to show fans what prospects and positions Dallas may be prioritizing, and the Cowboys have already conducted six of said visits.

Plus, a look at the top five prospects at each position, Greg Zuerlein’s new landing spot, and Trevon Diggs dream for his brother to join him in Dallas. All that and more in Saturday’s news and notes.

Cowboys News: Looking at LBs, Kearse signs, WR gets first draft visit invite

There’s talk about who should complement Micah Parsons, but the Cowboys have a history of getting it wrong with defensive 1st-rounders. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Micah Parsons was a revelation in his rookie season, but he can’t do it alone. The Cowboys are expected to beef up their linebacker corps either in free agency or the draft, but the team has a recent history of getting it wrong with first-round defenders. We’re sorting through the class to see who would be a stellar fit for the star, just as the defense’s leader seems ready to pass the torch.

Elsewhere, Jayron Kearse makes it official, the Cowboys fill their final coaching staff opening, and the first of 30 official prospect visits is apparently on the books. We look at an intriguing edge rusher coming out of the SEC, examine which Cowboys will be expected to step up into larger roles in 2022, and prepare for a new next-door neighbor at AT&T Stadium. That’s all ahead in News and Notes.

News: More meat for James Washington, OT proposals, Cowboys eyeing T.Y. Hilton?

The Cowboys’ new WR claims he was underused in Pittsburgh, plus draft-day prospects, new OT proposals, and would T.Y. Hilton be a fit? | From @ToddBrock24f7

Dallas’s newest wide receiver is endearing himself to fans right out of the gates; James Washington not only gave a sly dis to his former team by claiming he was underutilized in Pittsburgh, but proved he may just be the most cowboy cowboy on the Cowboys, all in the same conference call. But he may have competition in the WR room, as one outlet says the team should be looking hard at another AFC free agent pass-catcher.

Elsewhere, plenty more draft-day prospects to grade- including two cornerbacks to pair with Trevon Diggs- and also, an under-the-radar defensive lineman may be on the cusp of hitting the big time in his return to the silver and blue. We’re looking at the new hire for the Cowboys coaching staff, guessing which Nittany Lion defender Dan Quinn might be interested in this year, checking the team’s progress toward its offseason goals, and considering which new overtime proposal solves the current conundrum. That’s all ahead in News and Notes.

Cowboys News: No Wagner? Prescott speaks on bad shoulder, optimism for 2022

Dak Prescott spoke about his offseason, the All-Pro punter is back, the outlook on big free agents up in the air for Dallas and more. | From @CDBurnett7

The cap space the Dallas Cowboys have crafted for themselves opens the window for some big moves. Will they make them? A break down of the top remaining free agents and who may fit into the Dallas way of doing things. As for their own free agents, All-Pro punter Bryan Anger is coming back to the Cowboys on a three-year deal. The details of linebacker Leighton Vander-Esch and defensive end Dorance Armstrong’s contracts are out, with the latter making a big pay jump.

Quarterback Dak Prescott was vocal about many things this week: his left shoulder surgery, the emotions of free agency and how fans shouldn’t jump ship so early as he believes Dallas isn’t done making big moves yet. Reuniting with Dan Quinn, Dante Fowler noted his experience with the Super Bowl champion coach and how he knows Fowler as a player possibly better than anyone else.

Cowboys Weekend News: NFC East gaining ground? What’s next for Dallas’ roster build?

Randy Gregory’s thoughts on starting fresh, Lawrence’s value contract, the latest draft news, top available free agents, and more. | From @AsaHenry_55

The Dallas Cowboys have lost more big-name players than they have added or retained through the first week of free agency. This includes Randy Gregory, who spoke for the first time recently about his decision to make a move to Denver.

Dallas has since secured two defensive ends, bringing in Dante Fowler and re-signing Dorance Armstrong, to go along with DeMarcus Lawrence.  Lawrence was extended earlier in the week. According to his agent, he accepted a very team-friendly deal to stay with the Cowboys. Second-year end Chauncey Golston will also be in the mix, what is expected out of the 2021 third-rounder?

Fans may have to wait until the draft to find the Cowboys next new substantial roster additions, as the club’s recent history shows a strong preference of building through the draft and re-signing that homegrown talent. However, after freeing more than $20 million in cap space, the Cowboys could re-enter the conversation for some of the league’s top remaining talent.

With a new quarterback in Washington, and multiple first-round picks for Philadelphia and New York, are the other NFC East teams going to close the gap in 2022? All that and more in this weekend’s news and notes.

Cowboys News: 4 free agency signings, but is Dallas missing the NFC window?

The Cowboys making four signings on Friday, opportunities in a regressing NFC and how Julio Jones could fit on a cheap deal in Dallas. | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys are finally on the board with outside free agents. Dallas signed receiver James Washington and reunited defensive end Dante Fowler with Dan Quinn to help rebuild the positions without depth from the 2021 roster.

Could the Cowboys look to sign another receiver in Julio Jones? The generational talent has been limited by injuries but a cost-efficient deal could intrigue Dallas for this coming season.

While hybrid safety Jayron Kearse’s status in Dallas is up in the air, the Cowboys re-signed linebackers Leighton Vander-Esch and Luke Gifford to return depth to the position with Quinn used to making fluid substitutions.

Randy Gregory signing with Denver is another case of the Broncos stealing a player from Dallas. The last couple times have resulted in triumph for the Cowboys, will this one end in the same result?

This is Friday’s Cowboys News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Dorance deal done, Kearse ‘not close,’ Za’Darius Smith still in play?

The Cowboys locked up a DE (for real this time), but are still working on Jayron Kearse. La’el Collins is already visiting new teams. | From @ToddBrock24f7

More blockbuster splashes were made around the NFL on Thursday, but the Cowboys elected to stay in the shallow end of the pool. Perhaps the most important bit of business was the signing (for real this time) of a veteran defensive end on the upswing. The team also announced the long-expected release of one of their longtime offensive linemen, who wasted no time in hopping a plane to meet with new suitors. One key playmaker spoke about his return to Dallas, while another is still waiting for his deal to come together. And one of free agency’s bigger names is still in the mix after doing a 180 on his former club.

Also in the news, a former fan favorite is back on the open market, we look at the biggest free agents still floating around, the Cowboys (along with everyone else) show major interest in the Georgia Bulldogs, and why Dallas not showing up on one particular set of rankings is a good thing. That’s all ahead in News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Defensive end market drying up as new league year starts

The Cowboys are staying out of the sweepstakes, Lawrence opened up about his contract discussions and why Dallas needs to flip the script fast. | From @CDBurnett7

Day 3 of 2022 free agency discussions turned out to be a microcosm of Joneses tenure at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys . Defensive end Von Miller showed real interest in returning home to Texas but it turns out quarterback Dak Prescott gave a better offer than the team themselves. Now, Miller is headed to Buffalo.

Za’Darius Smith was another name that went off the board for a potential replacement after the Randy Gregory nightmare. Right in the center of it all is defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, whose reworked contract opened the door for a reload and looked bleak early in discussion according to the Boise State product.

The Cowboys spent the first day of players being able to sign their deals with no new news to speak of. Here are the rest of the News and Notes.

News: Latest on Randy Gregory contract debacle; Cowboys sign 2, looking at adding others

How the Cowboys really lost Randy Gregory is turning into a contentious case of he-said-he-said; plus making the case for Von Miller and Jayron Kearse. | From @ToddBrock24f7

It was a wild day in Cowboys Nation, with much still to be sorted out and the ramifications sure to be felt for a long time. Randy Gregory’s contract flip-flop had the fanbase bitterly divided over who to be angriest at. The Cowboys front office? Gregory? Gregory’s agent? Truth is, the whole truth is actually still out there, and there’s plenty of blame to go around for a situation that shouldn’t have happened at all. We’ve got the latest on what went down and who said what… but this is a story that will continue to be pieced together as the new league year begins.

But life in the free agency negotiation window still chugged along; the Cowboys got two more of their own signed while watching another leave for aquamarine pastures. They’re still open to trade offers on one veteran, and they’re keeping an eye on a couple other names… one an eight-time Pro Bowler. A former playmaker is making a case for one of his college’s own, Dallas picks up two extra draft picks, and decades of the Cowboys family say goodbye to one of their own. Here’s the News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Latest on Gregory, Collins after busy Day 1; Lawrence’s deal adds cap space

Dallas lost one versatile playmaker as FA negotiating began, but managed to secure two key figures and could soon be locking down others. | From @ToddBrock24f7

And to think, Monday wasn’t even an official day for transactions. There was plenty of movement on the first day of the free agent negotiating window, though, and the Cowboys were right in the mix. They lost out on keeping one versatile playmaker but managed to lock down two other key pieces of their roster. And the new deal for DeMarcus Lawrence gives the front office a sizable chunk of change that they can use to address other needs.

One priority player for Dallas is reportedly being courted by Denver, with the Cowboys trying to convince him to stay. Another veteran, though, isn’t getting much interest on the trade block and could find himself released soon. One high-profile defender has apparently relegated Dallas to his second tier of options, and a former diamond in the rough has been snatched up by the other team in the Lone Star State. All that, plus seven rounds of mock draft madness, the Cowboys Wire free agency tracker, and the absurd thing the Cowboys told Amari Cooper before trading him away. That’s all up in the News and Notes from Pi Day 2022…
