LeBron James increases lead over Luka Doncic in latest All-Star returns

The Los Angeles Lakers star still looks to be in a good position to be a captain for the All-Star Game for the third consecutive season.

LeBron James looks to be in a good position to be a captain for the third straight NBA All-Star Game, as he has seen his lead expand over the rest of the competition in the latest returns from the fan voting for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game in Chicago.

James now has a lead of over 149k votes, up from 82k in last week’s returns, over Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, who currently has 4.59 million votes to LeBron’s 4.74. But as has been the case throughout the All-Star voting, LeBron is joined on the list with plenty of his Lakers teammates.

Anthony Davis looks even more like a lock to start in the game, coming in second behind LeBron James with 4.4 million votes. Dwight Howard is also still in the top-10 in frontcourt voting, pulling in 670k votes. But Howard’s votes still don’t rival that of the “GOAT,” Alex Caruso, who brought in 894k votes, enough to pull him up to fourth amongst guards, only 100k votes behind  Portland’s Damian Lillard in third.

In the Eastern Conference, Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo looks like a lock to be the captain for the East with over 4.4 million votes.

LeBron James takes overall All-Star voting lead over Luka Doncic

The NBA released the latest returns and the Los Angeles Lakers star is in line to become a captain of the game for the third straight year.

After the early returns indicated a changing of the guard in the All-Star voting, the newest returns released by the NBA on Jan. 9 shows that the love for LeBron James is still as strong as ever.

After trailing both Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetkounmpo in the first voting returns, LeBron is now the leading vote-getter in NBA All-Star voting for 2020. If the results hold at this pace, James will be a captain in the All-Star Game for the third straight season. Although the fan vote accounts for only 50 percent of the All-Star voting results, the two captains will be selected by the player with the highest vote total in each conference.

According to the NBA, James has a lead of over 81,000 over Doncic in the Western Conference. Giannis Antetokounmpo, on the other hand, increased his lead to become the captain from the Eastern Conference for the second straight seasons.

As for other Lakers, Anthony Davis looks like a lock to start alongside his teammate LeBron as Davis currently had 3.1 million votes, trailing only Doncic and James in the West. Dwight Howard also remains in the top-10 in All-Star votes while the Alex Caruso gag continues to get even funnier, with Caruso moving into sixth place among guards for All-Star votes.

Below are the full top 10 for backcourt and frontcourt for each conference.

NBA All-Star voting: LeBron James, Anthony Davis lead West frontcourt

The two stars of the Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the lead to start in the 2020 NBA All-Star game in Davis’ hometown of Chicago.

The NBA opened voting for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game on Christmas Day and Thursday delivered the first returns after over a week of voting, with the Los Angele Lakers star duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the voting for the Western Conference frontcourt. But LeBron’s streak of consecutive seasons being an All-Star captain is jeopardy as the Western Conference has a new top vote-getter in the first returns.

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is the NBA’s leading vote-getter, with just about 50,000 more votes than James through the first week of voting. Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo looks poised to remain the captain from the Eastern Conference as the reigning MVP leads the East in votes.

However, while James may not be a captain, the Lakers are well-represented the votes. And in some ways that are tongue-in-cheek. Dwight Howard cracked the top 10 in Western Conference frontcourt voting despite playing just 20 minutes a game and Lakers reserve guard Alex Caruso got more votes than Phoenix’s Devin Booker, among other strong guards in the West.

Below are the full results the league released on Thursday.
