New Mexico Lobos (0-4) are en route to Aggie Memorial Stadium on Saturday for the annual Rio Grande Rivalry in Las Cruces for the 114th time.

New Mexico State opens this matchup as a 9.0-point underdog. The over/under has been set at 58.

The New Mexico Lobos and New Mexico State Aggies are coming off tough losses as they prepare for their highly anticipated Rio Grande Rivalry.

Fresno State outmatched the Lobos in a 38-21 defeat, while the Aggies narrowly lost to Liberty 30-24.

The Lobos defense allowed only 93 rushing yards on 33 attempts, averaging 2.8 yards per carry.

Through the air, they gave up 252 yards on 27 completions out of 34 attempts, with an opponent completion rate of 79.4%.

By the end of the game, New Mexico had run 81 plays for a total of 485 yards.

In the last three games, the Lobos have had great numbers against opponents but need that to translate into more red zone TDs and points in general.

With both teams looking to rebound, this rivalry showdown is a heated battle that captures the state of New Mexico’s sports faithful each year.

Lobos quarterback Devon Dampier continues to shine as a dual-threat leader, throwing for 338 yards on 33-of-53 passing (62.3%), adding a touchdown and suffering two interceptions.

He contributed 67 rushing yards on the ground on nine carries, showing his ability to keep defenses on edge.

Javen Jacobs also found the end zone with a rushing touchdown and 41 yards, while receiver Luke Wysong hauled in 10 catches for 126 yards in an impressive performance.

Despite their efforts, the Lobos have struggled to balance their offense, highlighted by a glaring need for a game-breaking running back.

New Mexico has compiled six touchdowns through the air and five rushing touchdowns. They have surrendered the ball eight times.

They are averaging 166.5 yards on the ground, 66th in FBS, and 27.5 points per game overall.

The no-brainer for Bronco Mendenhall Lobo’s team is to cut down the penalties with 45 infractions for a whopping 335 yards.

One thing that could help find more balance is an explosive, game-changing running back who could complement quarterback Dylan Dampier and the trio of talented receivers—Luke Wysong, Caleb Medford, and Nic Trujillo.

Last season, Jacory Merritt, known as “Bill,” broke through the line of scrimmage for significant chunk plays, a dynamic element missing this year.

This really helped with time of possession and keeping their defense from playing so many downs, just moving the chains with first downs.

The stats back up the Lobos’ need for improvement. They’ve accumulated 1,727 yards this season but have only managed 11 touchdowns, turning the ball over eight times.

Establishing a more effective running game for the Lobos could be the key to turning their season around, keeping the three-and-outs to a minimum, and giving their defense more rest for the latter part of the game.

Sophomore Arizona State transfer Javen Jacobs, who averaged 6.4 yards per carry through four games, shows promise.

A former 5A Player of the Year, Jacobs plays at a more exsplosive speed than many of his teammates (IMHO), and with only 17 attempts so far, he’s a player who needs more touches.

His ability to break big plays could help take the pressure off Dampier and create the offensive balance the Lobos desperately need.

Without a more vital running game to complement Dampier and receivers Wysong, Caleb Medford, and Nic Trujillo, the Lobos’ offense has moved the ball but not convert this into touchdowns in the Red Zone.

This has forced their defense to stay on the field too long, leaving them gassed and vulnerable, especially in the second half.

After a historic 10-5 season, NMSU’s 1-3 start has been disappointing. The offense is struggling to produce, averaging just 14.3 points and 211.3 yards per game—among the lowest in the 134-team FBS.

First-year head coach Tony Sanchez announced Monday that Wake Forest transfer Santino Marucci will remain the Aggies’ starting quarterback.

The  Aggies’ offense has also struggled to find its rhythm. Quarterback Marucci had a rough outing against Liberty, completing just 48.3% of his passes for 74 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

He added 32 rushing yards, while Seth McGowan led the team with 50 yards.

Receiver TJ Pride contributed with five catches for 33 yards, but the Aggies failed to generate enough firepower to keep up.

Their defense has struggled mightily, ranking 131st in Division 1 in yards allowed per game (510.5) and giving up an average of 44.8 points per game.

The Aggies, sitting at 1-3, face similar issues. They rank 133rd in total offense, averaging 211.3 yards per game, and have managed only 14.5 points per game.

Defensively, they’ve allowed 835 rushing yards and 125 total points through four games, ranking them 109th in points allowed per game.

Both teams must find answers quickly as the Rio Grande Rivalry heats up.

For New Mexico, the key could lie in unleashing Javen Jacobs, while New Mexico State must find a way to jumpstart their offense and tighten up their defense.

Either way, this matchup promises to be a critical test for two teams eager to prove themselves.

Both teams want to bounce back and turn things around in their next matchups.

Key players in the next game?

Looking ahead to the next game, both the New Mexico Lobos and New Mexico State Aggies will rely heavily on their key players to make an impact:

New Mexico Lobos Key Players:

  1. Devon Dampier (QB): Dampier is the engine of the Lobos’ offense. His dual-threat ability (1,061 passing yards, 248 rushing yards this season) will be crucial, both through the air and on the ground. If he can limit turnovers, he could be a game-changer.
  2. Luke Wysong (WR): Wysong leads the Lobos’ receiving group with 407 yards and one touchdown. His playmaking ability and ability to stretch the field will be vital in opening up the offense.
  3. Eli Sanders (RB): Sanders has accumulated 218 rushing yards this season, and he will need to provide consistent production on the ground to take the pressure off Dampier.
  4. Caleb Medford, Nic Trujillo, and Javen Jacobs three must get more touches to keep defenses off balance, and they are weapons for the Lobos.

New Mexico State Aggies Key Players:

  1. Santino Marucci (QB): After a shaky performance in the last game, Marucci will need to improve his accuracy (48.3% completion rate in the previous game) and make smarter decisions with the football to lead the Aggies’ offense.
  2. Seth McGowan (RB): McGowan, the team’s leading rusher with 260 yards and two touchdowns, will be pivotal in establishing the run game. If he gets going, it will ease the load on Marucci.
  3. TJ Pride (WR): With 60 receiving yards on the season, Pride will look to step up as a reliable target for Marucci in the passing game. A strong showing from him could help balance the Aggies’ offensive attack.

Both teams will depend on these players to rebound from recent losses and lead their respective squads in their upcoming game.

Game predictions?

Predicting the outcome of the New Mexico Lobos vs. New Mexico State Aggies matchup, based on recent performances and critical players, offers an intriguing scenario:

New Mexico Lobos:

  • Strengths: The Lobos’ offense, led by quarterback Devon Dampier, has shown the ability to put up big passing numbers. Dampier’s dual-threat capability can challenge defenses, especially if he gets time to make plays through the air and on the ground. Additionally, Luke Wysong is a consistent and reliable target, making the passing game a serious threat.
  • Weaknesses: Turnovers have plagued the Lobos, with Dampier throwing six interceptions this season, including two in the last game. Defensively, they have struggled to slow down potent offenses like Fresno State. Cutting down all the penalties, they have with 45 infractions for 335 yards.

New Mexico State Aggies:

  • Strengths: The Aggies’ ground game, spearheaded by Seth McGowan, has been a steady source of production. If Santino Marucci can bounce back from his rough outing and limit mistakes, their offense can stay balanced. The defense has been scrappy, but they’ll need to focus on containing Dampier’s versatility.
  • Weaknesses: Marucci’s inconsistency in the passing game (48.3% completion rate last game) has limited the Aggies’ ability to mount sustained drives. The passing game, in general, has been underwhelming, making it easier for opponents to stack the box against the run.

Game Prediction:

Both teams are coming off losses and will be eager to rebound, but the Lobos have shown a more explosive offense with Dampier under center. However, their turnovers and defensive weaknesses keep this game close. The Aggies’ defense could keep them in the game if they can force mistakes, but their offense will need more from Marucci to get over the hump.

Final Prediction:
New Mexico Lobos 31, New Mexico State Aggies 24.

The Lobos’ offense will likely prove too much for the Aggies, although turnovers could make this a tightly contested game. Expect a hard-fought rivalry matchup with the Lobos’ playmakers ultimately making the difference.

MWC rivals face off as the Fresno State Bulldogs (2-1) take on the New Mexico Lobos (0-3) on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at University Stadium in New Mexico.

There’s no doubt that Fresno State remembers last year’s upset loss to Danny Gonzales’ New Mexico Lobos 25-17, especially with the Bulldogs favored by 28 points in that game.

As they head into Albuquerque, Fresno State is eager for some payback, but this time, they’ll face a team led by new head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

This year’s Lobos, despite being 0-3 with losses to Montana State, Arizona, and last week’s Auburn, look significantly better as a team than last year’s Lobos.

At least on the offensive side of the ball, OC Jason Beck’s scheme and having a dynamic Quarterback, Devon Dampier, certainly have helped them.

The UNM Lobo’s offense is fifth in total offense in the Mountain West Conference, averaging 29.67 points per game behind San Jose St, Fresno St, UNLV, and Boise State, which leads at 45 points per game.

In contrast to the Lobos, who are dead last in total defense in the Mountain West Conference, giving up 565.7 yards per game, the team giving up the fewest is San Jose State, at 248.33 yards per game to date.

The Mountain West Conference has the most challenging nonconference schedule in the FBS. MW teams have 35 nonconference games scheduled this season against Autonomous four opponents.

This is  the most of any FBS league (counting Notre Dame, Oregon State, and Washington State as A4 teams), with the next-closest totaling 27

This year, UNM Lobos has the third-hardest schedule, with a national ranking of 79th, behind Utah State at 76th and UNLV at 75th, according to College Football Network.

So if Bronco Mendenhall’s Lobos can fix this defense, outcomes in the win collum would change drastically, and he has done an excellent job with the talent this team has; it’s evident to anyone who has watched this team compete this year.

Fresno State is coming off a dominant win last Saturday at Valley Children’s Stadium, defeating New Mexico’s in-state rival, the NMSU Aggies—whom the Lobos will face next week in Las Cruces.

As the Fresno State Bulldogs (2-1) prepare to face the New Mexico Lobos (0-3) on Saturday, the numbers tell a compelling story of mismatched defenses and potent offenses.

Fresno State averages 34.7 points per game, which could spell trouble for a New Mexico defense that has surrendered an eye-popping 47 points per game.

The Bulldogs are also well-positioned to exploit the Lobos’ shaky defense, which has given up an average of 565.7 yards per game, significantly more than the 427.3 yards Fresno State’s offense has been generating.

Photo courtesy of Fresno State Football 2024

Fresno State Offensive Leaders The Bulldogs’ offense is spearheaded by wide receiver Mac Dalena, who has been a dominant force, hauling in 15 catches for 384 yards (128.0 yards per game) and three touchdowns in just three games.

Quarterback Mikey Keene has also been a key contributor, passing for 814 yards (271.3 yards per game) with five touchdowns and four interceptions.

Running back Malik Sherrod adds balance to the attack, rushing for 191 yards (63.7 yards per game) and three touchdowns. Complementing the air assault, wideout Jalen Moss has posted 222 yards on 13 catches, averaging 74.0 yards per game. Cameron Lockridge has been a playmaker on defense with 12 tackles, 2.0 TFL, and three interceptions, making life difficult for opposing quarterbacks.

Photo courtesy of UNM Football 2024

New Mexico’s Offensive Battle Despite their struggles, New Mexico has shown flashes of offensive promise, averaging 29.7 points per game, which exceeds Fresno State’s defensive allowance of 20.0 points per contest.

Quarterback Devon Dampier has been effective, throwing for 723 yards (241.0 yards per game) and five touchdowns. However, his four interceptions have slowed the Lobos’ momentum.

Luke Wysong leads the receiving corps with 20 receptions for 281 yards (93.7 yards per game) and one touchdown, while Eli Sanders has rushed for 189 yards, though he has yet to find the end zone.

Caleb Medford has contributed two receiving touchdowns, adding another dimension to New Mexico’s offense.

Defensive Showdown: While Fresno State’s defense has only given up 292.0 yards per game, the Lobos’ offense has generated 414.3 yards per contest—creating an intriguing battle between the Bulldogs’ stout defense and New Mexico’s ability to rack up yards.

However, despite gaining yards, the Lobos have been unable to turn them into wins, going 0-3 when surpassing Fresno State’s average allowed yards.

Fresno State’s balance and defensive stability may give them the edge over New Mexico’s potential but inconsistent attack in a clash of mismatched defenses and capable offenses.

Expect the Bulldogs to capitalize on the Lobos’ defensive vulnerabilities and extend their winning streak.

Fresno State Leaders

  • Keene has thrown for 814 yards (271.3 yards per game) on 58-of-93 passing, with five touchdowns and four interceptions this season.
  • Sherrod has 191 rushing yards on 51 carries, scoring three touchdowns.
  • Elijah Gilliam has 91 yards on 23 carries (30.3 yards per game) and one touchdown.
  • Dalena leads the team with 384 receiving yards, 15 receptions, and three touchdowns.
  • Jalen Moss has 13 receptions for 222 yards.
  • Raylen Sharpe has nine catches for 84 yards and one touchdown.

New Mexico Leaders

  • Dampier has 723 passing yards (241.0 yards per game), five touchdowns, four interceptions, 181 rushing yards (60.3 yards per game), and three rushing touchdowns.
  • Sanders has 189 rushing yards on 40 carries.
  • Luke Wysong leads with 281 receiving yards on 20 receptions and one touchdown.
  • Davis has 152 receiving yards on 12 catches (50.7 ypg).
  • Javen Jacobs has eight catches for 77 yards.

Based on current trends and statistics, Fresno State is favored to win its upcoming matchup against New Mexico.

Here’s why Fresno State has the edge:

  1. Offensive Power: Fresno State averages 34.7 points per game, while New Mexico’s defense has allowed 47 points per game. Fresno State’s well-rounded offense, led by quarterback Mikey Keene and receiver Mac Dalena, should be able to exploit New Mexico’s struggling defense.
  2. Defensive Stability: Fresno State’s defense allows just 292.0 yards per game, far fewer than New Mexico’s average of 414.3 yards per game. They’ve also been strong in forcing turnovers, with standout players like Cameron Lockridge contributing interceptions.
  3. New Mexico’s Defensive Struggles: The Lobos allow 565.7 yards per game, which will likely be a significant weakness against Fresno State’s offensive efficiency. Even though New Mexico has shown offensive flashes, they’ve struggled to turn that into wins, going 0-3 despite scoring more than 20 points.

Given these factors, Fresno State is likely to win, potentially by a significant margin, unless New Mexico can tighten up its defense and capitalize on offensive opportunities.

If the Lobos’ defense steps up, this could be one of those marquee matchups where they finally put together a complete game—four solid quarters of offensive production and defensive stops.

The Lobos are playing a balanced team on both the offensive side of the ball, averaging 34.67 points per game (third in the Mountain West Conference) and second in scoring defense at 292 yards per game.

So, this has to be a game in which both the Lobos’ offense under OC Jason Beck and Defense under Nick Howell step up to give the Lobos any chance at a victory in Albuquerque at University Stadium.

If that happens, the Lobos could pull off an upset and shake things up in the Mountain West Conference.

I call it the “Bronco Mendenhall factor.” Mendenhall knows how to coach and instills in his team a belief that they can win every time they step on the field. We’ll see if that belief translates into results.

Pac-12 poaches Mountain West schools for Expansion 2026

In a bold move that could reshape college sports, the Pac-12 is looking to raid the Mountain West Conference for expansion, targeting Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State, and Fresno State.

According to reports from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, all four schools are planning to apply or have already applied for Pac-12 membership, seeking approval from the conference’s board.

If successful, this would bring the Pac-12 to six teams alongside holdovers Washington State and Oregon State.

The Pac-12, once a dominant force in college athletics, has been reeling after losing 10 of its 12 members to the ACC, Big Ten, and Big 12.

This realignment cycle has left Oregon State and Washington State in a precarious position, scrambling to fill schedules and maintain relevance.

However, Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould is making aggressive moves, offering the targeted schools a new media rights deal that is more lucrative than their current Mountain West arrangement.

The Mountain West is fully aware of the looming departure. Commissioner Gloria Nevarez released a statement acknowledging the media reports.

Still, she emphasized that departing schools would be held accountable to the conference’s bylaws, including hefty exit fees.

“The Mountain West Conference is aware of media reports regarding the potential departure of several of our members & we will have more to say in the days ahead.

All members will be held to the Conference bylaws & policies should they elect to depart. The requirements of the scheduling agreement will apply to the Pac-12 should they admit Mountain West members.

Our Board of Directors is meeting to determine our next steps. The Mountain West has a proud 25-year history & will continue to thrive in the years ahead.”

Should the departures happen, the Mountain West will collect over $111 million in penalties. Still, it would also be forced to rebuild, likely considering teams from the FCS ranks to fill the gaps.

Schools looking to leave the Mountain West Conference will need to pay a total of $17 million in exit fees, plus an additional $43 million due to a scheduling agreement. This would result in the Mountain West receiving a combined $111 million in exit fees.

For the Mountain West, this substantial financial boost could open opportunities to pursue other Group of Five schools or even elevate some institutions from the FCS level. The conference’s next steps will become clearer over time.

Although there is a two-year transition period for moving up to the FBS level, during which teams cannot participate in postseason play, the financial incentives and the prospect of advancing to a higher level remain appealing.

Boise State, the most recognizable name in the potential Pac-12 expansion, brings a storied football history, having regularly competed for national prominence in the BCS era.

Fresno State and San Diego State are powerhouses consistently competing for Mountain West titles.

Their move and Colorado State’s could give the Pac-12 desperately needed lifeline.

For the Mountain West, however, the future remains uncertain. If the four schools leave, the conference will be reduced to eight members, teetering on the edge of viability. As college football’s new era of realignment unfolds, the Mountain West and Pac-12 are at the heart of a high-stakes reshuffling that could dramatically alter the landscape of the sport once again.

Which teams are following?

As the latest wave of conference realignment heats up, speculation about which teams might be following to join the Pac-12—or be courted by other conferences—is intensifying. Here are a few potential candidates that could be targeted next, either by the Pac-12 or other leagues:

  1. Air Force (Mountain West)
  • Why they could be next: Air Force boasts a strong football tradition and national recognition, especially within service academy rivalries. Their unique brand and solid athletic program could make them an appealing candidate for the Pac-12, which still needs two more schools to reach the NCAA’s required eight for FBS conference status.
  1. UNLV (Mountain West)
  • Why they could be next: UNLV’s market appeal lies in its location in Las Vegas. This growing sports hub could bring significant media value. While their football program has been historically underwhelming, the city’s growing profile and a newly built Allegiant Stadium make UNLV a strong contender for future realignment moves.
  1. Nevada (Mountain West)
  • Why they could be next: Nevada has consistently performed well in the Mountain West and offers geographic proximity to other potential Pac-12 members like Boise State and Fresno State. The school’s solid athletics and Reno’s growing market could make it an appealing addition for a league looking to stabilize.
  1. SMU (American Athletic Conference)
  • Why they could be next: Although not a Mountain West team, SMU has been discussed in previous realignment talks, particularly as a potential target for the Pac-12. The Dallas-based school would provide access to the Texas market and has invested heavily in its football program to regain national relevance.
  1. UTEP (Conference USA)
  • Why they could be next: UTEP’s proximity to New Mexico and Texas gives them a unique geographic advantage. If Pac-12 is looking to broaden its southwestern presence, UTEP could be considered. However, it would need to improve its football profile to become more competitive.
  1. Tulane (American Athletic Conference)
  • Why they could be next: Another non-Mountain West school, Tulane’s recent success in football and its academic standing could make it an intriguing option for the Pac-12 or another major conference. The New Orleans-based school brings strong market appeal and a competitive football program.

The realignment dominoes are far from done falling. With the Pac-12 needing to reach eight schools to survive as a conference, it wouldn’t be surprising if more Mountain West teams and schools from the AAC or C-USA become critical players in the next round of movement.

If the Pac-12 successfully poaches Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Colorado State, the Mountain West Conference (MWC) will be left in a precarious position.

Losing four of its most prominent schools would significantly weaken the conference in terms of athletic competitiveness and media value. Here’s what could happen to the MWC as it navigates this potential upheaval:

  1. Survival vs. Dissolution
  • Survival: The Mountain West will likely focus on maintaining its status as a viable conference. While losing its top programs would be a significant blow, the remaining eight members—Air Force, UNLV, Nevada, Utah State, Wyoming, New Mexico, San Jose State, and Hawaii (football only)—could still form the foundation of the conference.
  • Dissolution: If the exodus expands beyond the four targeted schools, the MWC could face a potential breakup, with remaining members seeking new homes in other conferences like the American Athletic Conference (AAC) or Conference USA (C-USA). However, dissolution seems less likely in the short term, as the remaining schools will aim to hold the league together to protect their interests.
  1. Expansion from the FCS
  • The MWC would likely evaluate adding schools from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to replenish its ranks. Potential candidates might include schools from the Big Sky Conference, such as Montana, Montana State, or Weber State, North Dakota,  with solid football traditions and fan bases.
  • Other possible FCS schools, like North Dakota State—a perennial powerhouse—could also be on the radar if they seek to move up to the FBS level. However, this would require substantial investment and planning.
  1. Realignment with Other Group of 5 Conferences
  • The MWC might look to merge or form alliances with other Group of 5 leagues, like the AAC or C-USA, to stabilize its future. These conferences could seek to consolidate in the face of larger Power 5 raids, pooling resources to maintain relevance in the college football landscape.
  • Such an alliance could lead to scheduling agreements, shared media deals, or even full-fledged mergers, helping to prevent the further erosion of the MWC’s value and competitiveness.
  1. Media Rights Impact
  • The departure of its biggest brands would likely reduce the MWC’s media rights value, especially since Boise State, Fresno State, and San Diego State are key drivers of viewership. The MWC’s current media deal with CBS and Fox, set to expire in 2026, would likely need to be renegotiated with a diminished pool of teams, resulting in a less favorable package.
  • The remaining MWC teams may also explore new partnerships. However, their diminished bargaining power could result in a lower-tier TV contract than they previously enjoyed.
  1. Financial Implications
  • The MWC could benefit from the financial penalties associated with schools leaving, potentially collecting up to $111 million in exit and scheduling violation fees from departing members and the Pac-12. These funds could help the conference navigate the transition in the short term, but they won’t replace the long-term value lost from departing schools.
  • However, the MWC would need to reinvest those funds wisely to lure new teams or enhance its remaining programs to ensure its future viability.
  1. Competitive Balance
  • The departure of the top programs, especially in football, would dramatically change the competitive landscape. Schools like Air Force, Utah State, and Wyoming—often overshadowed by Boise State or San Diego State—would have the opportunity to become conference frontrunners.
  • However, the loss of marquee matchups and rivalries could hurt the league’s appeal, making it less attractive for recruits and fans.
  1. Potential for a Rebuild
  • Despite the challenges, the MWC has a chance to rebuild. The conference could reinvent itself by identifying ambitious FCS schools or leveraging relationships with other Group of 5 programs. If the remaining schools stick together and focus on maintaining competitiveness, the MWC could remain a respectable league in college sports.

Why New Mexico is not being considered:

New Mexico is not being considered for the new Pac-12 expansion for several key reasons, mostly related to athletic performance, market size, and revenue potential. Here are the main factors:

  1. Athletic Competitiveness

Football Performance: In conference realignment, football is typically the driving force. New Mexico’s football program has struggled in recent years and hasn’t had the level of success necessary to make it an attractive candidate for a higher-profile conference like the Pac-12.

  • Unlike schools like Boise State or San Diego State, which have been regular contenders for Mountain West championships, New Mexico’s football team hasn’t had a winning season since 2016.
  • Overall Athletic Profile: while competitive in some areas (such as basketball), New Mexico’s other sports programs don’t have the same national profile as those from schools targeted for Pac-12 expansion.
  • The Pac-12 is looking for programs that can elevate its overall competitiveness across multiple sports, particularly in football and basketball.
  1. Market Size and Appeal
  • Small Media Market: New Mexico is based in Albuquerque, which is a relatively small media market compared to other schools being targeted, like San Diego State (San Diego), or Boise State (which has strong national appeal despite being in a smaller market).
  •  The Pac-12 is seeking schools that bring significant TV markets or national recognition to increase the value of its media rights deals. Albuquerque’s market doesn’t offer the same kind of media boost that a larger or more recognizable program would provide.
  1. Revenue Potential
  • Limited TV and Sponsorship Appeal: The Pac-12 is attempting to rebuild itself after losing its top schools to other Power 5 conferences.
  •  It’s looking for programs to generate strong TV viewership, attract national attention, and bring in lucrative sponsorship deals. New Mexico’s football and basketball programs don’t have the same national draw or financial potential as those of Boise State or Fresno State.
  • Lack of Investment in Athletics: While New Mexico has invested in athletics, its facilities and financial commitment to sports aren’t at the level required to make a strong case for a move to the Pac-12.
  •  Pac-12 expansion candidates are often evaluated based on their facilities, financial resources, and ability to elevate the overall prestige of the conference.
  1. Geographic Considerations
  • Less Strategic Location: New Mexico is somewhat geographically isolated compared to schools like San Diego State, which gives the Pac-12 access to Southern California, or Boise State, which expands the conference’s reach into the Pacific Northwest.
  •  While New Mexico is not far from Colorado State or Arizona, it doesn’t provide the Pac-12 with a significant strategic foothold in a critical region.
  1. Existing Pac-12 Targets
  • The Pac-12 has set its sights on schools like Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Colorado State due to their more robust athletic profiles, larger media markets, and more significant potential for media rights deals.
  • These schools are seen as better fits for what the Pac-12 needs to survive and rebuild after losing its most extensive programs. New Mexico doesn’t match up in the same way.

In summary, New Mexico’s lack of competitiveness in football, smaller media market, limited revenue potential, and less strategic location make it a less attractive candidate for the Pac-12’s expansion plans.

The conference is looking for schools that can immediately elevate its profile and financial standing, which New Mexico is not currently positioned to do.

In short, the MWC is at a crossroads. It must act swiftly to replace its departing teams or forge new partnerships to survive.

The following steps taken by its leadership will be crucial in determining whether the conference remains viable or is left vulnerable to further attrition.

Auburn Tigers Eye Quarterback Change as New Mexico Clash Approaches

The Auburn Tigers find themselves at a crossroads following a tough 21-14 loss to the California Golden Bears.

Quarterback Payton Thorne, who transferred from Michigan State with high expectations, struggled in the defeat, completing just 14 of 27 passes for 165 yards, throwing four costly interceptions.

While Thorne has shown flashes of brilliance this season with 487 passing yards and five touchdowns, his inconsistency has prompted head coach Hugh Freeze to reconsider his quarterback strategy.

Thorne’s turnovers were pivotal in Auburn’s defeat, as the offense stalled repeatedly.

New Mexico’s head coach Bronco Mendenhall’s presser this week commented:

“Watching from afar, (they’re) talented, well-coached, and capable,” Mendenhall said. “The game on Saturday, really, the difference was the turnover margin. Low-scoring game, and without the turnovers, certainly more scoring could’ve happened for Auburn.

“Give Cal credit for going on the road and making enough plays to win the game. And it’s hard to do in that environment, on the road in college football. So, really well-played game right to the end.”

Though Auburn QB Thorne added a rushing touchdown to his stat sheet, the mounting interceptions have raised questions about his future ability to lead the team.

Auburn was projected to finish 10th in the 16-team SEC during the offseason.

Tiger head coach Freeze acknowledged the dilemma, noting Thorne’s strong practice performances but admitting that those successes haven’t translated to game day.

Auburn’s Payton Thorne is currently the starting quarterback. Still, his status might be in question following his recent struggles, particularly in the loss to California, where he threw four interceptions.

Head coach Hugh Freeze has hinted at possibly giving backup Hank Brown more practice reps, indicating there could be a change if Thorne’s performance doesn’t improve.

Hank Brown, a promising three-star recruit from the Class of 2023, is waiting in the wings. Though inexperienced, Brown flashed potential in the season opener, throwing for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

With the Tigers now 1-1, Freeze hinted that Brown could see more action soon, saying, “He’ll get his share of reps this week.”

Auburn’s next challenge comes against the New Mexico Lobos, who also seek redemption after a 61-39 loss to Arizona.

Despite their 6-7 record last season (3-5 in SEC play), Auburn enters the matchup as a 28-point favorite over New Mexico, bolstered by a roster stacked with SEC-level talent.

The Tigers returned their leading rusher from last year, Jarquez Hunter, who totaled 909 yards, and strengthened their receiving corps by adding standout wide receivers Cam Coleman and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

For New Mexico, Devon Dampier remains the starting quarterback. Despite the Lobos’ losses, Dampier has been a dual threat, performing well in the air and on the ground.

Lobos quarterback Devon Dampier impressed with 260 passing yards, 130 yards rushing,  three touchdowns, and two rushing scores.

Both teams are hunting for stability at quarterback as they prepare for critical matchups.

For Auburn, securing a solid performance under center is crucial as SEC play looms on the horizon.

Whether Thorne can regain his form or Brown steps up to seize the moment remains the question for the Tigers heading into their showdown with the Lobos.

New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

The New Mexico Lobos kicked off their season against Montana State on August 24, suffering a heartbreaking 35-31 loss after allowing 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Devon Dampier threw for 172 yards and one touchdown, while Luke Wysong led the receiving corps with six catches for 95 yards.

In their second game, the Lobos faced Arizona and endured a 61-39 defeat. Despite the scoreline, the offense performed well.

Dampier passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions.

He also led the rushing attack, amassing 130 yards and two more scores on the ground.

Auburn Tigers Betting Preview

Auburn opened their season with a commanding 73-3 victory over Alabama A&M. The Tigers stormed out with 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back.

Payton Thorne threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns, while Malcolm Simmons was the top receiver with 91 yards and a score on just three catches.

However, in their second game against California, the Tigers struggled offensively in a 21-14 loss.

Thorne had a rough outing, passing for only 165 yards, one touchdown, and throwing four interceptions.

Running back Jarquez Hunter contributed with 68 rushing yards on 12 carries, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.

 Auburn vs. New Mexico Prediction

New Mexico might be worth considering for a cover. Although the Lobos have endured two tough losses, their offense showed promise against a strong Arizona team, racking up 471 total yards (211 rushing) and 30 first downs.

However, their defense allowed 627 yards, including 422 through the air, which remains a concern.

On the other hand, Auburn’s offense sputtered in their loss to California, managing only 286 total yards, 165 through the air, and turning the ball five times.

While the Tigers will likely improve, New Mexico’s ability to move the ball could help them keep this game competitive and potentially cover the spread.

New Mexico’s game plan will likely focus on maximizing their dual-threat quarterback, Devon Dampier, and capitalizing on his ability to create plays through the air and on the ground. Given Auburn’s SEC-level talent, the Lobos will aim to control the tempo, keep the Tigers’ defense on its heels, and avoid turnovers.

  1. Balanced Offense: New Mexico will look to mix the run and pass effectively. Dampier, who threw for 260 yards and ran for 130 against Arizona, will need to establish both facets early. Running back Eli Sanders could also be key in helping the Lobos control the clock and keep Auburn’s offense off the field.
  2. Limit Mistakes: Turnovers have hurt New Mexico this season, so they must focus on ball security and avoid giving Auburn extra possessions. Dampier must minimize risky throws, and the offensive line must protect him from pressure.
  3. Quick Passing & Play Action: Auburn’s defense is physical, so the Lobos could incorporate quick, short passes to receivers like Luke Wysong to move the chains and keep drives alive. Play-action could also open up big plays downfield if the run game is effective.
  4. Defensive Discipline: Auburn will look to exploit New Mexico’s defense with their talented playmakers like Jarquez Hunter, so the Lobos must stay disciplined in gap assignments and contain the run. Limiting big plays from Auburn’s receivers will also be critical.

In summary, New Mexico’s game plan will hinge on efficient offense, ball control, and strong defensive execution to keep the game within reach.

In any college football game, if you are not as big, fast, and talented on paper, you must execute and limit the big plays and explore your opponent’s weaknesses.

So, for the Lobos to hope to pull the upset, they must maximize their strengths, play brilliant football, and not turn the ball over.

So much of college football is about momentum runs and getting excellent field positions to put your team in the most favorable position to get a win.

Bronco Mendenhall has this team looking pretty competitive despite their 0-2 record, so this should be a very entertaining game for the viewers.

Do Video Games Enjoy the Same Worth and Status as Football and Rugby?

gaming localization services, video game localization services

We can openly say that the video game industry is today one of the most revenue generating industries. This industry alone has shattered the records built by both the music and the film industry. The experience that games provide is just so exceptional that it has increased the number of games tenfold or maybe more than that. With the prospect of global audiences, game localization services have been inculcated in this industry which removes all the linguistic and cultural barriers. Despite this fame, most people still consider games just for entertainment purposes. These people are often the ones who aren’t much involved in gaming and have adhered to the old beliefs around games when video games were just for fun.

But over the years, video games have evolved so much that there are so many genres. In this read, we are going to talk in detail not only about the evolution of games that made the audience believe that they are more than just for entertainment but also answer the question of whether they enjoy the same status as physical sports (rugby and football) or not.

Video Games – Defining the Term Sports

Video games have evolved over time and today, they are the epitome of success. The visuals that these games contain are so awesome that they compete with anime, manga, and Marvel movies. For instance, let’s talk about the AAA game that has shaken the whole world right now, Black Myth: Wukong. This game has broken all the records European games have built over the years and is the most watched, wanted, and famous game. Hence, video games are literally redefining the term sports because a few years back games were just played for fun. And now these video games have attained the status of competitive games and are being played in international esports tournaments.

Normally when world sports comes into mind, people think of games like cricket and football as they are considered strenuous sports. But now as gaming has emerged as a full-fledged career they are becoming part of electronic sports and claiming their position. Furthermore, with the presence of video game localization services games are now accessible to every individual making them even more in demand.

Status of Football and Rugby

Football and rugby are two of the physical sports played by a majority of people today. The latest Fresno State Vs Michigan football held on 1st September 2024, sparked the interest of the audience. Hence, these sports get a lot of coverage and are considered the pioneers of physical sports mainly because of their strong use of mind and body. There is no lie in this statement that they both are difficult games and are loved by a vast majority of people. Both these games transcend cultural, linguistic, and geographical barriers. During the play-off seasons, you will find football and rugby lovers all gathered over one screen and enjoying themselves. These sports are the combination of strength, speed, agility, and strategic thinking. Players also endure injuries and physical hardships during the game which makes them a difficult sport as well.

All in all, both rugby and football have earned the status of real sports because of their physicality, competitive nature, and rich histories.

Status War Between Video Games & Football-Rugby

The just entertainment perspective of video games is long gone, now is the time to embrace video games as competitive sports and give them the recognition they truly deserve. There is an open war between video games and physical sports like football and rugby because of several reasons.

Physical Demands

According to the scientists at the German Sports University, esports gamers are real athletes and they face physical strains as normal athletes face. The heartbeat of a gamer reaches 160-180 beats per minute which is almost similar to that of a traditional football and rugby player. You won’t believe it, but the levels of cortisol are also similar to what F1 drivers face. Gamers have to be extremely active while playing the game or else their character can get injured or killed. This reduces the overall points earned by the players and decreases their rank.

How can we forget about motor skills? Just like football and rugby players, gamers have to master hand-eye coordination to attack instantly.

Teamwork and Communication

Gamers also need to exhibit teamwork in the game. This teamwork is established with proper and accurate communication.

There is no doubt that translation services have increased the access to games and allowed global audiences to know more about games. This step is changing the prior concept about the entertainment part of games and is making them a competitive sport.

Final Words!

It is true that football and rugby are strenuous competitive sports and motor skills and mental strength is important for them. And these same two things are important in esports gaming as well. Video games right now might not enjoy the same status as football and rugby but people are definitely recognizing them.

The Bulldogs look to secure their first victory of the 2024 season as they host Sacramento State in their home opener. This is the first time these two schools are meeting since 2024.

Keys to the game:

Finding Succes in the running game:

Fresno State had a total of nine rushing yards last week at Michgian. The Bulldogs won’t see another defensive line like Michgian this season. This week, they will face a defense that only gave up 60 yards on the ground to San Jose State. With star running back Malik Sherrod still nursing an ankle injury it will be interesting to see if true freshman Bryson Donelson gets more snaps today and if QB Joshua Wood will come in for certain packages. The Dogs must find early success on the ground to help open up this offense and keep the defense on their heels. This offense can’t be one-dimensional.

https://x.com/P356Loeffler/status/1831426725160603753

Linebackers:

Like last week the Bulldogs will face another dual-threat QB. The Bulldogs backers played well last week when it came to containing the run, I expect more of the same this week. Fresno State has to make Sacramento State beat them through the air.  Sacramento Quarterback Kaiden Bennett had 10 carries last week the Bulldogs have to contain him in the pocket, don’t let him extend plays have to force him to make tough throws. This game has Phoxien Jackson’s interception written all over it.

https://x.com/P356Loeffler/status/1830731418961334701

Wide Receivers:

Outside of Jalen Moss, this group had a lot of miss connections with Quarterback Mikey Keene. I expect this game to be all about getting on the same page and building some chemistry with guys like Raylen Sharpe, Chedon James, and Nathan Acevedo. Josiah Freeman is still dealing with an injury that could sideline him for the second straight week. One of these guys has to be that extra X-factor outside of Moss. Sacramento’s defense does struggle against the pass, I expect a big game for Mikey Keene and this Receiver core.

https://x.com/AlecABC30/status/1831185018485653818

Predictions:

Both teams are coming in looking for their first win. Sacramento State is a team that won’t back down and play Fresno State very tough. They gave San Jose State a run for their money last week. The Bulldogs know they let a great opportunity slip away last week. The Dogs will come out ready to go and get off to a fast start. I think the Bulldogs will put Sacramento away in the early third quarter.

The San Diego State Aztecs (1-0) host the Oregon State Beavers (1-0) at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

The Oregon State Beavers and San Diego State Aztecs will meet on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium in week 2 of college football.

Oregon State and San Diego State will both face tougher competition when they meet Saturday night in a non-conference matchup in San Diego.

The Aztecs will face their first major challenge of the season when they take on Oregon State this Saturday evening at Snapdragon Stadium.

After an expected win against Texas A&M-Commerce, San Diego State (1-0) steps into a tougher contest against a formidable Oregon State team. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

The Beavers (1-0) are coming off a 38-15 victory over Idaho State. In that game, they dominated the ground game with 362 rushing yards and controlled the tempo throughout.

Oregon State ran 72 plays to Idaho State’s 51 and nearly doubled their time of possession.

This ball-control offense will likely wear down most opponents, a scenario the Aztecs must avoid if they hope to win.

San Diego State shifted gears in the second half to secure a 45-14 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce, marking the debut of head coach Sean Lewis.

“We’ve got a tough challenge with San Diego State,” said Oregon State coach Trent Bray. “They’re a talented, well-coached team.

Playing on the road adds another layer, so we need to be at our best and improve from Game 1 to Game 2.”

Bray noted that San Diego State’s offensive scheme is similar to his own. “Last week was unique, but this game feels more familiar to what we’re used to and have practiced against,” he said.

Bray was impressed with San Diego State freshman quarterback Danny O’Neil, who completed 22 of 33 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. “We’ll aim to make him throw into tight windows, and I feel good about our ability to do that,” Bray added.

Lewis emphasized the need for his team to control the line of scrimmage better than Idaho State did. Oregon State’s Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson combined for 315 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

“They’re going to rely heavily on their run game and time of possession,” Lewis said. “We have to stop the run and take that advantage away, which will be a real test.”

Lewis also stressed the importance of discipline, as the Aztecs drew 16 penalties for 149 yards last week. “We have to be more detailed and disciplined. Those penalties were inexcusable, and extended drives or stalled our own. It’s something we need to address this week,” he said.

San Diego State, led by breakout star Marquez Cooper, who rushed for 223 yards against Texas A&M-Commerce, will aim to counter with a more balanced offensive approach.

While the Aztecs managed 73 plays last week, they trailed in time of possession, an area they must improve to compete with Oregon State.

Quarterback Danny O’Neill, who threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns in his debut, will need to control the passing game, while Cooper continues to slash through defenses on the ground.

Oregon State poses a significant threat with their potent running back duo of Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson, who combined for 315 yards and four touchdowns against Idaho State.

The Aztecs will need to limit their rushing effectiveness, holding them to around 3 yards per carry to have a chance.

Defensive coordinator Eric Schmidt will focus on controlling the line of scrimmage and pressuring Oregon State’s passing game, which was efficient last week, going 11/14 for 148 yards.

This non-conference matchup is part of a rare scheduling arrangement between Oregon State, Washington State, and Mountain West teams following conference realignment.

While it does not count toward conference standings, it provides a legitimate test for both programs.

For San Diego State to secure a victory, ball control and discipline will be crucial.

Head coach Sean Lewis acknowledged the challenge of stopping Oregon State’s run-heavy offense and emphasized the need for his team to clean up penalties, after being flagged 16 times for 149 yards last week.

Oregon State’s ability to grind down opponents with time of possession is well-known, and the Aztecs will need to match that control on both sides of the ball.

If Cooper can replicate his explosive performance and the defense can corral Oregon State’s ground game, San Diego State could position themselves for an upset in what promises to be a tough, hard-fought battle.

Predicting the outcome between San Diego State and Oregon State is challenging, as both teams bring strong elements to the matchup.

Oregon State has the edge due to its dominant running game, led by Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson, who combined for 315 yards and four touchdowns last week.

Their ability to control the clock and wear down opponents with a ball-control offense will be tough for San Diego State to handle.

The Beavers also have a solid, efficient passing game that complements their run-heavy attack.

However, San Diego State can make it competitive if Marquez Cooper, fresh off a 223-yard rushing performance, continues his momentum.

If the Aztecs’ defense can contain Oregon State’s rushing attack and force the Beavers into passing situations, they could disrupt their rhythm.

Freshman quarterback Danny O’Neill will also need to rise to the occasion and avoid mistakes under pressure.

This should be a very entertaining game form a fans perspective and will reveal both teams’ strengths and weaknesses as well.

In the end, Oregon State’s experience and depth, especially on the ground, give them the advantage.

Prediction: Oregon State wins 31-27, though San Diego State has the potential to keep it close if they execute well on both sides of the ball.

The Tim Skipper era starts with a big test as the Bulldogs head to the big house to face the No.9 Michigan Wolverines. This will be the first time these two schools will play each other.

Players to watch:

RB Donovan Edwards

The Bulldogs will have their hands full with the “ Don” on the field. Edwards is coming to a spectacular national championship game with six carries for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. Edwards backed up Blake Corum last season who is now in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams. Donovan had only five games last season where he carried the ball 10 times, but that won’t be the case this year as he will be Michgian workhorse back this season.

https://x.com/search?q=donovan%20edwards%20&src=typed_query

QB Mikey Keene

Keene enters his second season with the Bulldogs but this time he won’t have QB guru Jeff Tedford alongside him. This will be the first we have seen Mikey Keene healthy in a while. The Question with Mikey will be can he take that next step and be a leader? The Junior QB threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns last season but he also threw 10 interceptions. Can he cut down on turnovers and protect the football?

https://x.com/gabecamarillo_/status/1823926749740326932/video/1

DE Korey Foreman

The prize possession recruit for Fresno State. The former five-star will make his Bulldog debut with a lot of hype around him. Fresno State fans are hoping Foreman can live up to that five-star hype. Earlier in spring Coach Jeff Tedford said “ There was one practice where he had like three sacks, two picks and one was one-handed. “I went into the defensive room and asked, ‘Who let Lawrence Taylor on the field?’ That’s what he looked like.” Can Korey make a much-needed impact on this Bulldogs defense?

https://x.com/AlecABC30/status/1820304264499282117

Keys to the game:

Can the Bulldogs get help in the trenches:

Michigan is a very physical, smash-mouth football team. With uncertain at the QB positions look for this to be the Donovan Edwards game. The Bulldogs have to find ways to contain the run and make Michgian beat by throwing it downfield. Whether it’s Alex Orji or Davis Warren Fresno State has to make these guys feel uncomfortable in the pocket. On the other side of the ball, simply, you have to protect Keene, especially against a front 7 like this. We saw this at times last year when this O-line just simply couldn’t hold its own allowing Keene to get pressured which led to ill-advised throws. If the Bulldogs want any chance at an upset it starts up front!

https://x.com/gabecamarillo_/status/1820474854132625605

Get your player makers going early:

The Bulldogs have a lot of speed and playmaking on offense with RB Malik Sherrod, WR Raylen Sharpe who transferred in from Missouri State, Chedon James who transferred from Idaho State, and WR Mac Dalena all set to go look for these four to make an impact in this game. With Jalen Moss lined up with Will Johnson the Dogs have to get production out of these four. Can one of these guys be a game-changer for the Bulldogs? Does Fresno State have a player that can the game in a heartbeat?

https://x.com/FresnoStateFB/status/1826438436913623532

Turnovers/ Special Teams:

If the Bulldogs want any chance at an upset they have to find a way to make that extra impact play. Whether is special teams taking one to the house or the Bulldog’s defense scoring a defensive touchdown, the Bulldogs have to find ways to ease pressure off its offense. Can someone on this special team unit or defense step up when it matters the most?

Predictions:

This game will be full of emotions and juice. Two programs starting two new era’s on primetime television. The Bulldogs are going to come in and give it everything they have. Michigan is looking to avoid the upset and make a statement early. The Bulldogs will make this a game but the size and physicality of Michigan will be too much for Fresno State. The Wolverines will pull away late in the second half.

The Georgia Southern Eagles (0-0) host the Boise State Broncos (0-0) at Allen E. Paulson Stadium on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

An offseason filled with high expectations, Heisman buzz, and excitement over the expanded College Football Playoff comes to a sudden halt for Boise State football this weekend.

The Broncos kick off their highly anticipated 2024 season at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday against Georgia Southern in Statesboro, aiming for their first season-opening win since 2020.

Saturday’s matchup features several firsts for Boise State: their first-ever game against the Eagles, the start of Spencer Danielson’s first full season as head coach, their first trip to Georgia since 2014, and Bronco Nation’s first look at a slew of talented transfers that fueled eight months of anticipation.

Let’s start with this: Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is the best all-around running back in college football this season.

He led the nation in yards from scrimmage per game with 159.7. Jeanty will be a key weapon in both the running and passing games, led by newly named starting quarterback Maddux Madsen.

As the defending Mountain West champions and College Football Playoff contenders, Boise State presents a formidable challenge for Clay Helton’s squad.

Now, onto the Eagles. Redshirt sophomore JC French steps in to lead an offense that passed the ball 62% of the time last season.

Though he appeared in ten games, French primarily backed up Davis Brin. He’ll have plenty of talented receivers to rely on, including last season’s leading receiver, Derwin Burgess Jr.

Focusing on the passing game might benefit Georgia Southern, as Boise State had the second-worst pass defense in the Mountain West last season.

However, the key factor will be turnovers. Georgia Southern quarterbacks threw 20 interceptions last year, the most in FBS.

Regardless of how much you pass, many turnovers make winning difficult.

Boise State is just three spots shy of the preseason Associated Press Top 25 and is the highest-ranked Group of Five team in the ESPN power index.

The Broncos were also picked to win a conference or division title for the 17th consecutive season in July, encompassing all 14 years in the Mountain West.

Georgia Southern enters its third season under head coach Clay Helton, who, like Danielson, is one of the only two interim leaders to reach a conference championship game—Helton led USC to the Pac-12 title game in 2015.

“Going out to play Georgia Southern, I mean, Clay Helton, I think the world of him. I know our whole staff does,” Danielson said. “He’s coached at an extremely high level everywhere he’s been. He’s a phenomenal offensive mind as well as a head coach.”

While Danielson and his team are focused on a week-by-week approach, Boise State can build confidence and iron out any issues before their September 7th trip to Autzen Stadium to face No. 3 Oregon.

The Eagles have posted 6-7 records in each of the past two seasons, losing in the Myrtle Beach Bowl last year and the Camellia Bowl in 2022.

Nine Georgia Southern players earned preseason All-Sun Belt Conference honors this year, with five named to the first team.

Among the first-team honorees is fifth-year running back Jalen White, who racked up 889 yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 160 carries last season.

Junior OJ Arnold, who tallied 411 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in 2023, also returns to the backfield.

“They have a tailback in number 25 who will be one of the best we face,” Danielson said. “They’ve got number 22 who can do it as well.

JC French, their starting quarterback, number 12, played last year too, and he can run and make all the throws. It’s an offense that will create a lot of confusion with various motions, adjustments, and formations to put the defense in conflict, and they have the players to execute it.”

Georgia Southern has won 16 of its last 17 home openers and posted a 5-1 record in Statesboro last year. Helton is 7-1 in season openers, and the Eagles boast a 214-49 all-time record at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.

“The crowd noise and hostile environment they create down there will be something we need to be ready for,” Danielson said. “We know the task ahead of us. We have to find a way to win game one, and Georgia Southern is working just as hard to do the same. So, I’m fired up for Saturday at 4 o’clock, and we will be ready.”

Keys to Victory

  1. Limit Turnovers: For Georgia Southern, protecting the ball is paramount. With 20 interceptions last season, cutting down on turnovers will be crucial to their success. JC French must make smart decisions and avoid forcing plays to keep the Eagles in the game.
  2. Exploit Boise State’s Pass Defense: Boise State struggled against the pass last season, ranking second-worst in the Mountain West. Georgia Southern’s passing attack, featuring JC French and a talented group of receivers, needs to capitalize on this weakness. Efficient and aggressive passing could open up the field and keep the Broncos on their heels.
  3. Contain Ashton Jeanty: Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is a game-changer, both on the ground and through the air. Georgia Southern’s defense must prioritize containing him. Limiting Jeanty’s impact will force Boise State to rely more on their passing game, potentially creating opportunities for the Eagles’ defense to make plays.
  4. Win the Line of Scrimmage: In any football game, control of the line of scrimmage is critical. Georgia Southern must hold their ground against Boise State’s offensive and defensive lines. On offense, this means giving French time to throw and opening lanes for the run game. On defense, it’s about pressuring Maddux Madsen and stopping Jeanty before he gets going.
  5. Special Teams Impact: Special teams can often be the difference in close games. Georgia Southern must excel in this area, whether it’s pinning Boise State deep with punts, making field goals count, or breaking a big return. Winning the special teams battle could provide the edge needed for an upset.
