Penn State Men’s Lacrosse defeats No. 17 Johns Hopkins, Tambroni gets 200th career win

Penn State men’s lacrosse head coach Jeff Tambroni scored his 200th career win as the Nittany Lions pulled an upset of No. 17 Johns Hopkins.

It wasn’t pretty for the Nittany Lions, but despite 22 turnovers, the men’s lacrosse team got a much-needed victory over No. 17 Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon. Jeff Tambroni celebrated a little extra today after clinching his 200th career win as head coach.

Penn State goalie Colby Kneese led the way with 15 saves on the day. Kneese has struggled to start the season, but he was a key part of Penn State’s 11-8 win on Sunday.

Penn State attackman Mac O’Keefe had his best outing of the season with four goals and an assist. Late in the first quarter, O’Keefe tied the game at three with this incredible low-to-high shot at the top of the offensive zone.

O’Keefe is closing on unprecedented history for Penn State. Not only is he the all-time goals leader for the University, he’s just seven goals shy of breaking the NCAA Division I record for career goals.

Penn State has struggled to find success in the second-half of games this season and the third quarter felt like it could be deja vu all over again. The Nittany Lions held a 7-4 lead going into the half, just to see that lead evaporate early in the fourth quarter.

The Nittany Lions played like a desperate team and it paid off. Kneese was a major contributor to them staying in the game as he made save after save when it mattered most.

Penn State dominated faceoffs from start to finish. Gerard Arceri and Jake Glatz combined to win 78% (18 out of 23) of the faceoffs against Johns Hopkins. The shots for each team were pretty much even, but due to Penn State’s 22 turnovers, Hopkins got extra possessions making it an even more impressive outing from Kneese.

The Nittany Lions are now 2-4 on the early season and have one of their biggest tests coming up when they face No. 3 Maryland this Saturday. The Terrapins are 6-0 and coming off an impressive 13-9 win over No. 5 Rutgers.

Gators football sees no new COVID-19 cases this week

There were 462 total tests within the department in the last week, and only two returned positive cases, a rate of just 0.4 percent.

The newest COVID-19 testing data from the University of Florida Athletic Association is good news for the program.

There have been no new positive cases on the football team this week, as of Monday.

The team conducted 274 tests between Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, and none of them returned a positive result. The outlook is good for the athletic department in general, as well.

There were 462 total tests within the department in the last week, and only two returned positive cases, a rate of just 0.4 percent.

This comes just two weeks after 61 positive tests in a six-day span shut down operations for the baseball team and lacrosse team, who accounted for a combined 46 of those cases.

It appears that after suffering severe outbreaks earlier in the month, the Gators program is now doing a better job of containing the spread of the virus. It just remains to be seen how capable it will be of maintaining the same standards over the course of a season.

UF sees increase in COVID-19 cases, pauses lacrosse and baseball activities

Of those cases, 31 are on Florida’s lacrosse team and 15 are on the baseball team. Both programs have now paused all activities.

The University of Florida Athletic Association released updated COVID-19 testing data for student-athletes, and the last week has brought an increase in cases both within the athletic department at large and the football program specifically.

When data was last released on Wednesday, there had been seven total positive cases in the month of September. In the last six days, the athletic department has seen 61 new cases from 337 new tests.

Of those cases, 31 are on the lacrosse team and 15 are on the baseball team. Both programs have now paused all activities.

This comes a day after the soccer team postponed its season opener due to three positive cases.

The football program has seen its share of cases as well, though not to the same degree as other programs. It has conducted 129 tests in the last six days, returning six positives. On Wednesday, there had been just one case on the team this month.

Since players returned on May 26, the UF football team has seen 28 total positive cases. It has, however, managed to keep the positive test rate relatively low this month at just three percent.

The athletic department as a whole is in a much worse spot. Since the beginning of this month, the total positive test rate at Florida has been 13 percent.

While the steps the football program has taken to contain the spread of the virus seems to be at least partially working, other programs at the school appear to be struggling much more to limit outbreaks, and it’s unclear what that could mean for the viability of non-football sports this year.

Notre Dame Adds Maryland Transfer Emma Schettig

Notre Dame’s women’s lacrosse team got bigger Monday when it added sophomore defender Emma Schettig.

Notre Dame’s women’s lacrosse team got bigger Monday when it added sophomore defender Emma Schettig. During her pandemic-shortened season at Maryland, Schettig was named an Inside Lacrosse Second Team All-American and an All-Rookie Team member. In six games, she led the Terrapins with 17 groundballs, had 16 draw controls and caused nine turnovers. She also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on one occasion.

Irish coach Christine Halfpenny said the following:

“I’m thrilled to announce the addition of Emma Schettig to our women’s lacrosse program. After recruiting Emma in her freshman year of high school (when NCAA rules allowed early communication) we always thought she was a fantastic cultural fit for Notre Dame, academically, athletically, and socially. Emma’s values align with that of our Gold Standards as she is constantly in the pursuit of excellence, integrity, and unity. Her experience as a full-time contributor in her freshman season at Maryland will no doubt help her to transition to our team’s style of play and the competitive ACC lacrosse schedule. Notre Dame Women’s Lacrosse feels very fortunate to add such a quality person and lacrosse player to our family!”

Schettig is not a complete stranger to everyone on Notre Dame’s roster. In 2019, she and Irish midfielder Kasy Choma won a gold medal with the U.S. Under-19 Women’s National Team. Additionally, she played high school lacrosse with new teammates Andie Aldave and Savannah Buchanan at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland. It’s practically a given that she’ll transition to South Bend smoothly.
