Former West Virginia forward Tre Mitchell transfers to Kentucky

West Virginia transfer Tre Mitchell has quickly found his next school.

Former West Virginia forward Tre Mitchell has found his next school. Mitchell who entered the transfer portal late last week has announced that he’ll continue his collegiate career at the University of Kentucky on Twitter

This will be the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native’s fourth program. He previously spent time at UMass, Texas, and of course West Virginia. With UMass, he was a two-time All-A-10 selection and was the A-10 Rookie of the Year for the 2019-2020 seasons. After averaging 18.8 points per game during his two seasons with UMass, Mitchell would transfer to Texas following the 2020-2021 season.

In his lone season in Austin, he averaged 8.2 points per game over 24 total games while also averaging 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists. Following Shaka Smart’s departure to Marquette, Mitchell would transfer to West Virginia.

For the Mountaineers this past season, Mitchell had a quality season, averaging 11.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. He was tied as the Mountaineers’ second-highest scorer this past season, only behind Erik Stevenson who averaged 15.4 points for West Virginia.

Mitchell will join a Kentucky team that went 22-12 this past season and made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 6 seed in the East Region. The Wildcats would defeat Providence in the first round before losing to Kansas State in the Round of 32.

Mitchell was one of three Mountaineers to enter the transfer portal last week joining Kerr Krissa and Joe Toussaint. Krissa, however, has already removed his name from the portal and will return to Morgantown.

Kentucky losing guard CJ Fredrick and forward Daimion Collins to transfer portal

The Kentucky Wildcats are losing two pieces of their roster to the transfer portal.

The Kentucky Wildcats 2023-2024 roster took a hit on Friday morning as rotational guard and part-time starter CJ Fredrick and forward Daimino Collins are both entering the transfer portal. Both players announced on Twitter their decisions to enter the portal.

Fredrick is leaving Lexington after two years with the Wildcats program. He originally transferred into the program prior to the 2021-2022 season after two productive seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. During his two seasons with the Hawkeyes, he averaged 8.8 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists while starting in 52 games.

His start with the Wildcats would not be the one that was envisioned as he appeared in just one game due to a hamstring injury that required surgery. He also missed seven games this past season for the Wildcats due to multiple injuries. When on the court, Fredrick was solid for John Calipari’s program, averaging 6.1 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists over 27 games and 22.3 minutes a night.

While he will be entering the transfer portal, Fredrick also says in his statement on Twitter that he will be considering professional options and will be maintaining his college eligibility in the process. While he has used five years of eligibility already, redshirting his true freshman season at Iowa, Fredrick still has one year of eligibility remaining thanks to the NCAA’s COVID-19 eligibility ruling, awarding him one extra season of eligibility.

Collins, a former five-star prospect never was able to find his footing with the Wildcats, averaging 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds over 52 games. He’ll look for a fresh start elsewhere and while he hasn’t had the career that many have expected, should still be a popular name in the transfer portal this offseason thanks to his potential.

Kentucky, on the other hand, without Fredrick will look to improve upon a 22-12 record from this past season including 12-6 in SEC play. The Wildcats were a No.6 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by Kansas State in the Round of 32.

Top prospect in the transfer portal sets up visit with Kentucky

Kentucky, Kansas setting up for an epic ‘blue blood’ arms race in the transfer portal.

The [autotag]Kentucky Wildcats[/autotag] were one of several “blue blood” programs that didn’t make a very deep run in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Now they are set to host the No. 1 player in the transfer portal as they look to return to the national championship scene.

Just over a month after Oscar Tshiebwe and the Wildcats fell to No. 3 Kansas State Wildcats in the round of 32, Kentucky is set to host former Michigan Wolverines center, Hunter Dickinson. The 7-foot-1-inch center was the No. 43 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class according to 247Sports. Dickinson averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 34 games last season. Those numbers were slightly above his career average of 17.2 points and 8.4 rebounds in 94 games.

Dickinson also was reported to visit with the Kansas Jayhawks, who recently beat out several teams for former Towson point guard Nick Timberlake. It could come down to these two basketball powers for Dickinson’s commitment. Based on how it went in Ann Arbor, the top big man would likely need to head elsewhere to win a national championship before trying his luck at the next level.

The Kentucky Wildcats and head coach John Calipari signed the No. 1 recruiting class in 2023 with four five-star signees. They have yet to land a transfer for next season, that could change with Dickinson.

Kentucky guard Sahvir Wheeler enters the transfer portal

The 5’10” guard will be looking for his third program in five seasons.

The transfer portal added another talented player on Monday. This time it was out of Lexington, Kentucky.

According to Jeff Borzello of ESPN, Kentucky Wildcats guard Sahvir Wheeler has entered the transfer portal. The Texas native will be looking to join his third team in five seasons. Wheeler started with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2019, and after two seasons he transferred to Kentucky.

Wheeler played 57 games with the Bulldogs with 43 starts. He played in 51 games for the Wildcats with 43 starts. He averaged 10.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.1 steals over his career. Wheeler scored 7.7 points per game with 5.6 assists in 21 games in the 2022-2023 college basketball season for Calipari.

The guard could stay within the SEC and return to his home state of Texas with the Aggies or he could opt to return to the Lone Star State with any number of Division I programs. His best season came with the Georgia Bulldogs as a sophomore scoring 14 points per game with 7.4 assists and 1.7 steals.
