What is Julian Edelman doing this offseason?

Julian Edelman is studying for his Bar Mitzvah, 20 years after being a 13-year-old.

In addition to being the campaign director to keep Tom Brady in New England, Patriots wide receiver and former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman has taken on another project this offseason.

The 33-year-old Edelman is working on doing many take care of 20 years ago: He is studying for his Bar Mitzvah.

In his 2017 memoir, Relentless, Edelman revealed that his paternal great-grandfather was Jewish and that he speaks weekly to a “Rabbi Yossi in Los Angeles.” Edelman has also traveled to Israel and expressed support for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting.

“My dad is Jewish,” Edelman, 33, told LA Magazine. “I’m going to have a Bar Mitzvah here soon,” Edelman says. “I speak with a Rabbi every Friday. He’s from out here.”

Edelman said he has attended synagogue during football season. “I go to her temple in Boston,” he said, when acknowledging a friend. “I only go once a year.”

Per LAmag.com:

He did not specify a date for his bar mitzvah, an event that would cement him into the faith. The ceremony traditionally celebrates a 13-year-old’s passage into religious adulthood, but men sometimes undergo the ceremony at later ages. (A friend of mine who converted to marry a woman who is part of a very religious Jewish family went even further, undergoing a circumcision in his late 20s. Edelman and I did not discuss this possibility.)

Training camp starts in the summer, so the bar mitzvah, if soon, would have to be in the next few months.

Julian Edelman brings ‘Stay Tom’ campaign to Celtics’ locker room

Julian Edelman is a man on a mission.

Julian Edelman is a man on a mission.

His time and resources are getting spent on a campaign to keep Tom Brady in New England. It began with Edelman and Brady’s awkward encounter at a college basketball game last week. Edelman took it to the next level by posting the campaign on social media and even selling merchandise.

On Friday night, he brought the merchandise to the Boston Celtics’ locker room — continuing his campaign.

Free agency begins on March 18, so Edelman has limited time to persuade Brady — but you’ve got to give him credit for trying.

Tom Brady cracks joke about Julian Edelman’s free agency plea

Julian Edelman, like many others, is doing everything he can to convince Tom Brady to stay in New England.

Julian Edelman, like many others, is doing everything he can to convince Tom Brady to stay in New England.

Edelman and Brady had an awkward exchange while attending a college basketball game on Sunday. Edelman said “he’s coming back” and Brady’s response wasn’t so clear. Edelman began a ‘Stay Tom’ campaign on Instagram shortly after and has remained adamant ever since.

He posted a link on social media to support his campaign on Wednesday with a link to buy the merchandise, and Brady had a hilarious response.

Brady’s future with the Patriots is uncertain and March 18 will be a much-anticipated date for the first-time free agent.

Regardless of the outcome, Edelman won’t go out without a fight.

Julian Edelman, Tom Brady share an awkward exchange about QB’s future

What the heck did Tom Brady say at the end?

Julian Edelman and Tom Brady have long said they’re like brothers. So the receiver clearly knows how to get under the quarterback’s skin.

Edelman is leading a campaign to convince Brady to return to the New England Patriots, and the receiver nudged the quarterback during a college basketball game between UNC and Syracuse. They were sitting on the sideline when a camera pulled up close to them.

Edelman said: “He’s coming back. He’s coming back.”

Brady looked awkwardly at Edelman before uttering something inaudible. That inaudible remark has sparked incredible speculation on his future. Everyone thought he said something different. Here’s a look at the exchange.

So does Edelman know something we don’t? Was he just trying to make Brady uncomfortable? And what the heck did Brady say in response?

Of course we’ve devolved into lip-reading to speculate about Brady’s future.

Brady responded by saying, “Get back to the east coast so we can throw 💯.”

What does this mean for Brady’s looming free agency decision? Probably nothing at this point. The 42-year-old is enjoying the process and has everyone at the edge of their seat.

New England Patriots fans can take this as a small win, considering the fact he’s on the East Coast and wanting to throw with Edelman.

Julian Edelman flaunts his three Super Bowl rings on Instagram

If you’ve got it, flaunt it, right?

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman channeled his coach on Instagram on Thursday. Edelman must have figured if Bill Belichick was flaunting his Super Bowl rings in public (at Super Bowl 54), then the receiver should, too.

Edelman put on his Super Bowl rings for a photoshoot, and posted an image to Instagram: “Sweatshirt weather coming soon? Now that has a nice ring to it…” Looks like Edelman is promoting his JE11 brand.

Julian Edelman makes funny appeal to Tom Brady on Twitter: ‘Baby come back’

Julian Edelman posted a hilarious meme to Twitter.

Julian Edelman is doing what he can to keep Tom Brady in New England. The Patriots receiver turned himself into a meme on Tuesday to send a message to his quarterback.

Edelman, who caught a career-high 1,117 receiving yards from Brady in 2019, took the boombox scene from “Say Anything,” and applied it to his and Brady’s situation. In the scene, Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) plays the song “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel to Diane Court (Ione Skye) in an effort to keep their relationship alive. It’s Edelman’s silly take on Brady’s looming free agency this offseason.

Edelman clearly doesn’t want Brady to go.

On Super Bowl Sunday, the NFL world was buzzing about Brady’s contract negotiations with the Patriots. Though New England is reportedly willing to offer $30 million per year, Brady and the Patriots have no agreement in place. In fact, the quarterback is interested in delaying his decision to get closer to the new league year in March, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

So how serious is Edelman? Naturally, the post is playful spin on the situation. But it’s also easy to imagine the receiver genuinely doesn’t have interest in playing for another quarterback next season.

Wes Welker explains why he was so tough on Julian Edelman

“He was good, and he listened, and he’s done really well for himself.”

Two of the greatest receivers in New England Patriots history shared a locker room for four seasons.

Wes Welker played with the Patriots from 2007-2012 and Julian Edelman was drafted in 2009. As soon as Edelman arrived, he was aware of the culture and had to adapt quickly to convert from a quarterback to a wide receiver. Edelman was drafted as an athlete and he started off his career by returning punts and trying to prove himself as a receiver.

Welker, who was similar in stature, was established as one of the league’s most dominant slot receivers. He saw potential in the seventh-rounder out of Kent State and helped mold him into a Super Bowl MVP that carries three championships and countless postseason accolades.

While speaking with NESN’s Doug Kyed, Welker detailed the tough love he provided while playing in New England.

“He was trying to get better,” Welker said. “I would have tried to do the same thing, for sure. He was trying to get better all of the time, and I was probably pretty tough on him because we needed him to step up. He may have a bitter taste in his mouth about that stuff or whatever, but it was all about trying to make our team better and make sure he knows, ‘If you do that, it’s not right. Don’t do that. You’re screwing up my play.’ He was good, and he listened, and he’s done really well for himself.”

Edelman has been Tom Brady’s go-to receiver ever since the 2013 season and it’s very likely that New England wouldn’t have had the success they had over the last decade without him. He has 118 catches, 1,442 yards and five touchdowns in the playoffs alone.

It’s also mind-boggling to look back at his 2019 season and see the numbers he produced while dealing with numerous debilitating injuries. At the age of 33, he recorded 100 catches, 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns.

“It’s incredible,” Welker said. “Shoot, the body starts to fail you especially when you start to get to that age. It gets harder and harder to get open. You’re almost using your savviness instead of your skillset. That’s always hard to do. It’s definitely very hard, especially when you start getting into your mid-30s to be able to put up those types of numbers.”

Edelman successfully underwent offseason surgery and should be ready for the 2020 season.
