Why Indiana Will Win

Just how sharp are the Badgers?

They’ve only been able to play three games, they’ve been banged up, they haven’t been healthy, and – give the other side a whole lot of credit here – they weren’t themselves in the 17-7 loss to Northwestern.

The receiving corps was missing a slew of key parts, there was nowhere for Graham Mertz to throw, and that game was a few weeks ago while Indiana has been in a solid weekly groove.

Yeah, the Hoosiers lose star QB Michael Penix Jr. for the year with a torn ACL, but Jack Tuttle isn’t your normal replacement. He’s a former star recruit at Utah, he’s got the next-level size and arm, and he can sling it.

Wisconsin has yet to deal with a dangerous passing game so far this season, but its corners – who were great against Northwestern except for a few key deep plays – are about to be tested.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Tuttle had better be great, because Indiana isn’t going to run the ball at all.

Stevie Scott is an excellent back, and the ground game is coming off its best game of the season by far – with 234 yards against Maryland – but the Wisconsin defensive front doesn’t give up a thing.

Illinois got a few big runs by QB Brandon Peters, and that’s been it – Wisconsin has allowed 202 yards and no touchdowns in three games.

Yes, Wisconsin has only played three games, and yes, it hasn’t been able to practice enough, but getting last week off with the Minnesota game canceled wasn’t the worst thing.

Over the small sample size, this is still the best team in the nation on third down defense by far, and it’s still No. 1 in time of possession by a mile. If it can do what it does – control the clock, rely on the defense, own the tempo – it should be fine, but …

What’s Going To Happen

What’s the real Wisconsin?

Blowing away Illinois and Michigan with ease really wasn’t that big a deal, and the offense couldn’t do a thing against the Northwestern defensive front. IU might be missing Penix, but it gets back the terrific defensive front that leads the Big Ten in sacks.

And then there’s the bigger problem for the Badgers – turnovers.

It gave them up like Halloween candy in the loss to Northwestern, and now it’s going against the Big Ten leader in takeaways – IU has forced 18 stocks far.

But the Badger defense will rise up, Mertz will be good enough through some shaky parts, and the team is about to try making up for the disaster in Evanston with a statement win.

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terps were red-hot before getting hit with a breakout of the coronavirus and missing the last few weeks.

QB Taulia Tagovailoa turned into a star, the passing game was unstoppable, and the offense cranked out close to 1,100 yards over a two game span after starting out with a clunker against Northeastern.

Now it gets an Indiana team who’s head might still be back in Columbus after last week tough 42-35 loss to Ohio State. Start hot, stay hot, and hope the Hoosiers aren’t quite as sharp as they were late against the Buckeyes.

There’s no running game for the Terps to worry about – the Hoosiers have yet to hit 120 yards and came up with -1 yard against OSU – and they could use the help. The Maryland O might be grew, but the D is dead last in the Big Ten allowing 227 yards per game.

Why Indiana Will Win

Justin Fields is the best quarterback in the Big Ten – even with the mistakes last week against IU – but Michael Penix was the best player on the field last week in Columbus, throwing for 491 yards and five touchdowns with a pick as he and the passing game almost pulled it off.

Ty Fryfogle is on fire with two straight 200-yard receiving games, Whop Philyor has just one less catch than Fryfogle, and now all the parts get to go off against a Maryland secondary that hasn’t been that great, but is statistically fine the run defense getting hit too hard.

Combine the offensive production with the Big Ten’s best pass rush, and it’s a bad combination for the Terps.

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland will come out hot and make this a bit of a shootout, but the defense will get ripped to shreds. Finally, the Indiana running game will show up, with the offensive line having its best game of the season.

Why Indiana Will Win

The lines have been solid so far, with the offensive side giving Michael Penix Jr. time to work.

The left-handed sophomore struggled for the first 58 minutes of the season, led IU to the win over Penn State, and he hasn’t slowed down ever since, throwing for 320 yards or more in each of the last two games. Even though he threw two picks against Michigan State, there weren’t any problems in the shutout win thanks to the defensive front that stuffed everything.

The Hoosiers allowed a grand total of 73 rushing yards against Michigan and Michigan State, they lead the Big Ten in sacks, and they’re second in tackles for loss. They’re going to get to Justin Fields and apply enough pressure to be a problem.

Why Ohio State Will Win

How do you know you have a great team? You don’t play that great – at least by your own high standards – and you still roll to three straight double-digit wins.

No, there’s no JK Dobbins around anymore, but the Buckeye have rushed for over 200 yards in each of the first three games.

No, this isn’t the same receiving corps as the 2019 version, but Fields hasn’t had any issues hitting 87% of his passes for 908 yards and 11 touchdowns without an interception.

No, the defensive front isn’t quite the same sort of a killer without Chase Young, but it still leads the Big Ten in sacks and there haven’t been too many things to get into a twist over defensively.

For all of the good things Indiana is doing, there’s no real running game. It has yet to push past 118 yards in any of the four games, it’s averaging just 2.7 yards per carry, and that means …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Michael Penix or Bust against the Buckeyes, and that’s a problem.

Fields will be better than Penix.

It’s not that Penix isn’t amazing, and it’s not that he won’t have a good game, and it’s not that IU doesn’t have the ability to make this slightly interesting, but this is a one-dimensional offensive team against an Ohio State team that either needs to be pounded on, or has to deal with a versatile O full of playmakers.

Look at this as a copy of Ohio State’s game against Penn State. It’ll be great, there won’t be any real concerns after a few early scores, but the final score will look cosmetically better than the game itself with Indiana putting up a few late points to hang around.

Why Indiana Will Win

So how is Indiana doing this?

It’s simple … it’s versatile. It hasn’t won the same way in any of the three games.

The offense did nothing against Penn State, and then it rallied late and pulled off a stunner. The offense was solid against Rutgers, and the defense was a rock. The passing game was terrific against Michigan, and the run D allowed 13 yards and lived behind the line.

Whatever is being thrown at Indiana, Indiana seemed to be able to handle.

Michigan State was able to beat Michigan thanks to the lack of turnovers, but it gave it up seven times to Rutgers and three times to Iowa, and lost both games. And that’s one of the constants so far for IU – takeaways.

The Hoosiers came up with three against Penn State and Rutgers and two against Michigan, while not turning it over in the last two games.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State has been solid at getting behind the line.

The pass rush might not be anything great, but the defensive front is coming up with a whole slew of tackles for loss. It needs to at least bother Michael Penix and the IU passing game that’s not consistent, but is getting better and better.

For all of the positives with the Hoosiers, the running game isn’t working. It’s been stuffed for 268 yards and just 2.6 yards per carry. If the Spartans can keep Penix from going off, the run defense will take care of the rest.

What’s Going To Happen

Which Michigan State is going to show up? Will it be the one that was ultra-focused and terrific in the clutch against Michigan, or will it be the one that kept turning it over against Rutgers and Iowa?

1993 was the last time the Hoosier won four games in a row in the Big Ten, and that fourth win was against …
