WATCH: Paulson Adebo bags Saints’ third INT off of Titans QB Ryan Tannehill

Three different New Orleans Saints defenders intercepted Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill on Sunday, with cornerback Paulson Adebo picking off the veteran passer to join teammates Marshon Lattimore and Marcus Maye. It proved to be a decisive takeaway in a pivotal 1-point win for New Orleans.

The Saints offense rallied after that interception to put together their lone touchdown-scoring drive on the afternoon, driving 33 yards in 5 plays before Derek Carr lobbed a pass to wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. And it all stopped with Adebo correctly reading the underthrown ball and making a well-timed leap to snag it.

WATCH: Derek Carr throws his first touchdown pass as a New Orleans Saints quarterback

It took him a few tries, but Derek Carr finally scored his first touchdown pass as the New Orleans Saints’ starting quarterback. Carr connected with second-year wide receiver Rashid Shaheed on a beautiful 19-yard lob to his right, giving the Saints a much-needed lead over the Tennessee Titans.

The Saints tried the same passing concept on the previous play, which was an incomplete pass to Keith Kirkwood. But Carr’s placement was more on-target for Shaheed and he was able to hit the speedster in stride for six points.

It was a tough road to get there. Carr saw all five of his previous pass attempts inside Tennessee’s 20-yard fall incomplete. Red zone efficiency was a major criticism for him with the Las Vegas Raiders and this performance didn’t exactly dissuade that notion, but it had to feel cathartic to punch that touchdown in after some early frustrations. Here’s to many more.

WATCH: Saints defensive backs Isaac Yiadom, Marcus Maye team up for tip-drill interception vs. Titans

You can’t say the New Orleans Saints defense didn’t show up for their Week 1 matchup with the Tennessee Titans. Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill tempted fate with a deep shot to open the second half — which the Saints intercepted with a little bit of teamwork in the secondary.

Free safety Marcus Maye wound up with the football at the goal line, which was deflected by the cornerback; but not who you’re thinking. Marshon Lattimore left the game for a play after a hard fall during the previous snap, with backup cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr. stepping in for him. Maybe Tennessee hoped to take advantage of the reserve being in the game. That gamble didn’t pay off.

Johnson batted the pass away at New Orleans’ own 1-yard line, which fell right into Maye’s lap. He was able to turn about and move upfield to the Saints’ 5-yard line before being brought down. It was the second interception of the afternoon for New Orleans. Credit to Johnson for rising to the occasion and Maye for making a heads-up play.

WATCH: Marshon Lattimore picks off Ryan Tannehill while covering DeAndre Hopkins

Week 1’s much-anticipated matchup between Marshon Lattimore and DeAndre Hopkins lived up to its billing. The Tennessee Titans wide receiver made a couple of plays early on, running a nice route that sent Lattimore sprawling — but the New Orleans Saints cornerback rallied back with a huge interception later in the game.

Having built some confidence in Hopkins’ hands, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill tried a risky throw towards the sideline with Lattimore and a safety trailing Hopkins for what would have been a critical third-down conversion. But Lattimore read the play and put himself in position to jump the route, acrobatically intercepting the pass to set his offense up in a great spot.

This is why Zack Baun made the team. The New Orleans Saints’ strong side linebacker doesn’t get to play many snaps on defense with the team running so much nickel personnel, but he continues to make his presence felt on special teams.

Baun blocked a punt from the Tennessee Titans — with Steve Gleason in the building — on Sunday to set the Saints up with excellent field position, though it was officially recorded as a 1-yard punt by Titans specialist Ryan Stonehouse. Derek Carr drove the New Orleans offense down into field goal range, where rookie kicker Blake Grupe booted a 33-yard try right between the uprights.

WATCH: Bryce Young throws 1st official NFL TD

Panthers QB Bryce Young bounced back from his first career INT with a stellar drive and his first career TD.

Before even taking an NFL snap, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young had a plethora of flattering adjectives thrown his way. And on Sunday, in his regular-season debut, he brought one of those many superlatives to the forefront.

Unflappable.

After throwing his first pro pick, on a pass intended for tight end Hayden Hurst, Young bounced right back just two touches later. The 22-year-old led a strong 12-play, 75-yard drive to get the Panthers into the end zone—a trip that ended, ironically enough, with Hurst.

The 4-yard score helped knot the game at 7-7 with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter. Young completed each of his six passing attempts on the possession for 51 yards.

Here’s what general manager Scott Fitterer said of Young’s unflappable mindset back in July:

“Everybody talks about the intelligence and the processing. It’s reaffirming, ’cause we saw that in an NFL offense. We saw him in a huddle, going up to the line of scrimmage and managing line calls. And then, not only managing the line calls, but post-snap—being able to process and go through it while you’re dropping back. It’s not just out of the gun like you are in college, grabbin’ it and throwin’ it. He’s going through the progressions of an NFL offense and that was really encouraging.”

Encouraging indeed, Scott.

WATCH: Brian Burns wreaks havoc on Falcons to start Week 1

Panthers OLB Brian Burns is in high pursuit of the bag.

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Brian Burns has built up his case to get paid for the last four years now. Alas, a new deal—which seemed imminent this offseason—has yet to be reached.

So, he continued to make that case to begin his fifth campaign.

Burns put the exclamation point on the very first defensive stand of Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, sacking quarterback Desmond Ridder and forcing a fumble.

He’d follow that up with an even more explosive second possession. Not only would Burns get in on yet another sack, teaming up with fellow backer Frankie Luvu, but he’d also give Falcons running back Bijan Robinson a very rude welcome to the NFL—blasting the rookie for a 6-yard loss to force a punt.

The two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher, who has been seeking a big-money contract extension for the past few months, was even considered a shoo-in to show up in uniform on Sunday. But it’s clear that he’s very much here.

WATCH: Top Saints draft picks Isaiah Foskey, Bryan Bresee team up for preseason sack vs. Texans

The New Orleans Saints saw a flash of what will hopefully be one of many highlights of their two top selections from the 2023 NFL draft as Bryan Bresee and Isaiah Foskey team up for a sack against the Houston Texans in the preseason finale.

Bresee has had a great preseason so far, while not logging a ton of stats he has made his presence known in each game so far. He looks like a very promising pass rusher. Foskey hasn’t had the same success but has steadily improved in every appearance so far, logging his first career tackle last week. Niko Lalos was also involved in the play as he puts some finishing touches on his preseason after three sacks in the last preseason game.
