Why Pitt Will Win

The Panther run defense hasn’t been a brick wall, but it’s been good enough – it stuffed Clemson’s Travis Etienne and hasn’t allowed 160 yards this year.

It’s this simple. Georgia Tech will have a hard time winning if it’s not running well.

Pitt continues to live into the backfield – leading the nation in tackles for loss with 105 on the year, 10.5 per game, and with eight against Clemson a few weeks ago – and Georgia Tech doesn’t do much to keep good lines from being productive.

Turnovers are a big issue for the Panthers.

Sometimes.

The problems have mostly come against the star teams with three giveaways against Notre Dame and five against Clemson, but Georgia Tech has to find a way to force mistakes.

Georgia Tech’s defense is aggressive enough to take the ball away in bunches sometimes, coming up with multiple turnovers five times including five against Duke against a few weeks ago.

Pitt’s offense struggles to keep the chains moving, the running game doesn’t work, and there are more than enough penalties to stall drives. However …

Georgia Tech’s pass defense is awful.

It allowed over 300 yards in each of the last two games, game up 500 to Clemson, and in the midst of all of that didn’t get hit too hard by Notre Dame or Boston College because they were too busy running.

After a rough day with four picks a few weeks ago against Clemson, the Panther passing attack will roll.

Why NC State Will Win

The run defense is playing well … at least lately.

It helps when your last three games are Florida State, Liberty, and Syracuse, but NC State is doing what it was supposed to and beating the mediocre teams on the slate. It hasn’t been easy, but this year, a win is a win is a win.

The defensive front hasn’t allowed more than 190 rushing yards in over a month, and it only had problems against North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Stop the Georgia Tech ground game, and you stop Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets were able to roll by Duke last week with five takeaways. NC State turns the ball over a bit, but not enough to be too big a problem, but …

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

NC State does turn the ball over.

There were issues over a two game stretch with seven combined against Duke and North Carolina, and it gave up at least once in every game so far. Georgia Tech needs the mistakes, and it needs to capitalize on all of them.

The NC State run defense might be doing a great job over the last few weeks, but it got ripped to shreds against the teams that can actually run. Georgia Tech might not be North Carolina or a fully-functioning Virginia Tech with its ground game, but it tore off 377 yards against Duke last week and should average close to five yards per carry.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech will make this interesting, but NC State will do a much, much better job on third downs on both sides of the ball, and it’ll finally be able to control the clock and the tempo on someone.

The Yellow Jackets aren’t going to get enough from the defensive line to pull this off, and they’re not going to get the five takeaways Duke gave up last week.

Why Duke Will Win

The Duke offense is still fighting.

This might be a disappointing year overall for a team that was suppose do be a whole lot stronger than 2-6, but it won two of its last four games and with three 400-yard days in the four outings.

There’s decent balance, the running game has found something in Mataeo Durant – he ran for over 100 yards in three of his last four games – and now it all gets to work against the worst defense in the ACC.

It has a whole lot to do with the competition, but Georgia Tech was getting worse as the season went on. The run defense was getting hammered on, the offense stalled, and then it all stopped – it’s been almost a month since the team was able to play.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Takeaways. Georgia Tech needs them, and Duke will deliver.

Blue Devil QB Chase Brice has been good for throwing interceptions in bunches, the team has turned it over two times or more in every game but two, and it’s -11 in turnover margin.

Duke’s offensive line is struggling, the Georgia Tech pass rush is rested – even if it wasn’t doing much of anything before the long break – and now the team finally gets to play someone its own size after the Clemson and Notre Dame part of the schedule is done.

It’s time to get the running game going. Duke dealt with two decent running games in the last several weeks, and it got ripped apart by both Virginia Tech and North Carolina for well over 300 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

Neither team has played in a while, and neither one was having a whole lot of fun before going on their breaks.

Don’t expect anything sharp, look for each team to turn it over at least three times, and expect Duke’s offense to be less inept than Georgia Tech’s.

Why Pitt Will Win

The defensive line is crushing and killing everything in its path.

Florida State ran for 146 yards last week against the Panthers, and that was a season-most allowed by the D that also generated 14 tackles for loss.

Pitt leads the nation in tackles for loss and and is third in sacks per game, it’s second in college football against the run, and now it gets a Georgia Tech offense that has to run well to win.

The Yellow Jackets have lost three straight as the ground game has gotten progressively less productive in each of the last five game games.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Yellow Jacket defense needs to force mistakes, and it has to capitalize on them all. It’s not a coincidence that the team is 2-0 when it forces more than two turnovers, and is 0-5 when it forces fewer.

Pitt isn’t that bad at giving the ball away, but it gave it up three times a few weeks ago in the loss to Notre Dame.

There’s no Panther running game to worry about, there aren’t enough third down conversions on a regular basis, and overall, there are way, way, way too many penalties. Georgia Tech has a problem with flags, but Pitt really has an issue, getting nailed with an ACC-high 75.5 yards per game.

What’s Going To Happen

Kenny Pickett made a difference. The Panther quarterback missed two games and was questionable for the Florida State game, and then he hit 78% of his passes for 210 yards.

He was good, the defensive line was better, and it’s all going to keep going against a Georgia Tech team that’s improving, but doesn’t have enough production on the offensive line to hold on against the devastating Panther pass rush.
