Browns, Eagles joint practices begin: Interesting things to watch for

Garrett return? Pocic versus some great DTs? WRs vs CBs? A lot of things we are interested in seeing and hearing from Browns and Eagles joint practices starting Thursday:

While training camp is not over, it is for Cleveland Browns fans who want to attend. The Browns were off practice on Wednesday in advance of Thursday and Friday’s joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Browns won’t play many, if any, starters in the actual preseason game versus the Eagles on Sunday but hope to get a lot of quality work during these two days of practice.

For Cleveland, the lack of clarity regarding QB Deshaun Watson continues to linger over the team but they have turned their plan toward QB Jacoby Brissett leading the offense moving forward. The Eagles, on the other hand, have spent the offseason building around QB Jalen Hurts after squeaking into the playoffs at 9-8 last year.

Here are a few interesting things we are watching for during these two days of practice:

What the Browns are getting in Marcus Santos-Silva

Despite not playing college football, @joshkeatley16 looks at the strengths and weaknesses of the Browns UDFA tight end:

The Cleveland Browns front office is not afraid to make some noise with loud and franchise-shifting additions like Deshaun Watson and Amari Cooper, but what I admire most about this current front office is their ability and willingness to look under every rock for a potential star.

It is no secret that this front office likes the tight end position and it is also known that there have been a few former college basketball players that have made the successful transition to tight end in the NFL and the Browns are looking into a possible success story in Marcus Santos-Silva.

Marcus Santos-Silva played college basketball at VCU from 2017-2020 and then transferred to Texas Tech to finish his collegiate career from 2020-2022. Santo-Silva did not get drafted, but that should be obvious, considering his football resume is shorter than mine, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t potential for him to turn into a regular contributor. Let’s dive in!

After rough start, Browns defeat the Jaguars in preseason opener

The rookies scored all the points and the pass rush harassed the Jaguars most of the night leading to the victory:

The inauspicious start to the Cleveland Browns 2022 preseason didn’t last on Friday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. QB Deshaun Watson played three short series only completing one of five pass attempts for five yards.

WR Anthony Schwartz dropped two passes and center Nick Harris left the game with what seemed to be a major knee injury on the second snap of the game. D’Ernest Johnson fumbled one of his three attempts, giving the Jaguars a short field.

Jacksonville scored the first 13 points of the game with QB Trevor Lawrence tossing a touchdown pass of nine yards.

With Josh Dobbs taking over at quarterback, Cleveland’s offense rode rookie RB Jerome Ford to their first touchdown. Fellow rookie CB Martin Emerson helped the Browns take the lead with his pick six where he stole the ball from the receiver before a great return.

In the end, all of the scoring done by the visitors from Cleveland came at the hands and feet of rookies. Kicker Cade York stretched the lead to 17-13 with a 31-yard field goal before Ford got back into the action.

Dobbs scrambled away from trouble before lofting the ball to Ford for a touchdown:

Not everything went Ford’s way, however, as he joined Johnson with a lost fumble, after a 14-yard reception.

The Browns defense created some quality pressure throughout the night, ending up with five sacks including two by rookie DE Isaiah Thomas. CB Herb Miller added an interception to the team’s total and the Browns forced and recovered a fumble as well.

Newcomers at defensive end Isaac Rochell and USFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Chris Odom also had sacks and created havoc.

In the end, the starters that did play for Cleveland didn’t look great but the quality depth on the team showed starting in the second quarter. A win is a win, even if it doesn’t actually count.

Rookie CB Martin Emerson provides defensive highlight with pick six

Another big play by a Browns rookie, this time on defense. Two different camera angles show you just how impressive it was:

While the night didn’t start the way the Cleveland Browns had hoped against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team took the lead going into halftime thanks to two rookies making big plays. Running back Jerome Ford busted a 41-yard gain, caught a 13-yard pass and scored the Browns first touchdown.

After that, it was time for a defensive rookie to step up and make a play.

With Cleveland down 13-7, Jacksonville looked to extend their lead after a defensive holding call on Lavert Hill kept their drive alive inside the two-minute warning.

On second and five, CB Martin Emerson, the Browns first selection in the 2022 NFL draft, joined the rookie party. Emerson fought the receiver for the ball and pulled it away. He then stiff-armed a would-be tackler, cut past the quarterback trying to make a tackle and outraced the Jaguars to the endzone:

Here, from the team’s official account, we see a different view of the interception and just how physical the rookie was:

After Ford and Emerson’s touchdowns, Cleveland’s rookies led Jacksonville 14-13 at halftime.

Rookie Jerome Ford provides first half highlights for Browns offense

Watch the rookie back bust a long run and then finish off the drive with a TD:

The start to the Cleveland Browns first preseason game didn’t go anywhere near as well as anyone would have hoped. Center Nick Harris went down for what looks like a bad knee injury and QB Deshaun Watson was rusty. WR Anthony Schwartz dropped two passes and a couple of penalties on the offensive line were problematic.

D’Ernest Johnson also turned the ball with a fumble early in the game as well.

Thankfully, the game didn’t end in the first quarter. With Watson on the sideline, Josh Dobbs took over at quarterback with the team down 13-0. That is when rookie RB Jerome Ford took over, first with this 41-yard run:

Ford finished off the drive with a short touchdown run to put Cleveland on the board:

With Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt sitting the game out, the team’s other backs got a chance to shine. Ford took advantage of his opportunities early racking up 48 yards on six attempts.

Ford also caught one pass for 13 yards.

What the Browns are getting in Stephen Weatherly

Our @joshkeatley16 takes a look at what the Browns are getting in Stephen Weatherly #Browns

The Cleveland Browns are continuing to make moves in free agency and have decided to add depth to the defensive line. It is no secret that the status of Jadeveon Clowney is up in the air and whether he decides to come back to Cleveland or not, the Browns need to add more depth to the defensive line.

In an effort to add more veteran bodies to the line, Cleveland signed Stephen Weatherly, who was a seventh-round selection by the Minnesota Vikings in 2016 out of Vanderbilt. Weatherly spent the end of last season with the Denver Broncos, but the majority of his NFL career was spent with Minnesota from 2016 to 2019 and again for the first portion of the 2021 season, but that’s enough of his past, let’s take a dive into what he can bring to the Browns.

Deshaun Watson needs to unlock Donovan Peoples-Jones, Anthony Schwartz

Due to the picks traded away and the money given out to get Watson, his job is to raise the play of those around him including DPJ and Schwartz. That is what top-level QBs do in the NFL:

The addition of Deshaun Watson by the Cleveland Browns is likely to dominate the discussion around the team for some time. The allegations and charges off the field merit that level of discourse while the talent on the field merit that level of interest in the player.

With a year off from playing the game, Watson may have a lot of catching up to do. We also don’t know what type of punishment the quarterback could receive this season, if any, and how that will impact his play on the field.

What we do know is that, primarily, Watson chose the Browns because of the talent around him on the field. On the offensive side of the ball, the line is one of, if not the, best in the game. The same is true of the running back group. Among the pass catchers, Amari Cooper and David Njoku are good starting points but the team seems to lack proven talent outside of those two.

While Cleveland may bring back Jarvis Landry, or this out-of-the-box idea from our mock offseason, Watson has the responsibility to raise the performance of the weapons around him. In particular, the new quarterback needs to help Donovan Peoples-Jones and Anthony Schwartz get to the next level.

With the Houston Texans, Watson leaned heavily on DeAndre Hopkins but also helped Will Fuller develop. While Fuller never put up huge numbers, having less than half the targets as Hopkins will do that, he still became a dangerous deep threat.

In Cleveland, Watson may lean heavily on Cooper but, with his contract and amount of draft capital spent to acquire him, needs to raise the level of the players around him. Tom Brady famously got Deion Branch paid top receiver money by putting his receiver in a position to succeed. Last postseason, Buffalo’s Josh Allen made Gabriel Davis a breakout star with eight receptions for 201 yards and four touchdowns.

For Watson’s addition to be successful in Cleveland, he must be able to create similar impacts with receivers and quickly. Peoples-Jones has shown flashes of exciting play but has failed to produce consistently while Schwartz had a good first game as a rookie then faltered after that.

With all of the contracts handed out by the team over the last few years, the team may not be able to bring in a ton of high-priced weapons for Watson. With the three first-round picks, and more, sent out to get Watson, the team may not be able to draft them highly either. Watson must make do with what is on the team and who is brought in. That is what top-level quarterbacks do.

What the Browns are getting in Joshua Dobbs

His quick breakdowns continue as @joshkeatley16 takes a look at Josh Dobbs:

The Cleveland Browns are still making moves in free agency and it appears the quarterback room is almost complete as they have added another member of the 2017 NFL Draft class in Joshua Dobbs.

Dobbs has failed to start any games during his NFL career, but he has been a reliable backup who was with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2017 until 2019 when he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dobbs was with the Jaguars until his release in 2020 and the Steelers snagged him once again and he has been in Pittsburgh ever since.

Dobbs has pretty limited game experience as he has only attempted 17 career passes, but he has completed ten of them for 45 yards and a single interception. The former fourth-round selection out of Tennessee has carved out a nice career, but let’s see what he can bring to Cleveland.

What the Browns are getting in Corey Bojorquez

Our @joshkeatley16 gives us his quick breakdown of what the Browns are getting in Corey Bojorquez #Browns

The Cleveland Browns are still making moves and have decided to add a punter in former Green Bay Packer, Corey Bojorquez. Cleveland has added the punter on a two-year deal and despite a punt block during the playoffs being his major highlight from this past season, it is clear the Browns feel like they have shored up the punter spot.

Bojorquez had an impressive average of 46.5 yards per punt, which now stands as a Green Bay franchise record and Cleveland is hoping he can keep this momentum going for 2022.

All of the special teams attention is placed on the kicker, but punter was a missing piece too and Bojorquez may be the one to finish the puzzle. Let’s dive into what the new Brown can do.

What the Browns are getting in Ethan Pocic

What the Browns are getting in Ethan Pocic from our @joshkeatley16

The Cleveland Browns are still making moves during this free agency cycle and have added another impressive piece to the puzzle in former Seattle Seahawks center, Ethan Pocic.

Pocic was selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by Seattle and at the time this was viewed as a bit of a steal as Pocic was widely regarded as the top center in that class.

Ohio State fans may remember Pocic from his days as a four-star recruit out of Illinois and the furious recruiting battle Urban Meyer put up trying to get him to play in Columbus before he committed to LSU and became an All-American, but that is enough about his college resume, let’s dive into what he offers the Browns.
