No. 1 Mater Dei outlasts No. 7 Servite in thriller featuring 83 points

Servite gave Mater Dei a greater challenge than any other team this season, but the No. 1 program in the country came out on top.

No. 7 Servite delivered No. 1 Mater Dei its toughest challenge all season. In the end, the top-ranked team in the country showed why it is, in fact, the top team in the country.

The Monarchs broke a tie late in the third quarter and held on for a 46-37 victory over the Friars. Mater Dei three-star running back Quincy Craig scored four touchdowns and five-star running back Raleek Brown had a season-best 162 rushing yards.

After beating St. John Bosco at the beginning of the month, Mater Dei had one more major test on the docket to prove they were the best team in the Trinity League. With just one more regular-season game, a home match against 3-6 JSerra Catholic, the Monarchs are in position to clinch the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs if they can get one more win.

From there, they’d likely have to beat Servite or St. John Bosco one more time to win the crown.

If Servite walks away regretting how close they were to winning this game, they’ll need the memory of a goldfish for next week. The Friars will take on St. John Bosco for a game that will likely decide the second seed and almost certainly dub one of the two the second-best team in California.

But they shouldn’t hang their head after the Monarchs win. Servite had plenty of positives, including quarterback Noah Fifita’s 306 passing yards and wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan’s 15 receptions for 163 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The two connected for a touchdown that tied the game at 31 with about two minutes left in the third quarter.

Mater Dei pulled back ahead before the frame came to an end. With a third-and-seven from the 42-yard line, Elijah Brown and Cooper Barkate connected on a deep pass that got the Monarchs all the way to up the 15-yard line. Craig scored on a five-yard rushing score before the quarter came to a close.

The Monarchs then went for the two-point conversion. Holder Ryan Didodo broke his wrist on the play, yet still completed the conversion on a pass to linebacker Malaki Te’o.

Servite scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter but failed to convert a two-point conversion, and then Raleek Brown punched home a 22-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Mater Dei defensive end David Bailey had 3.5 sacks, including this big one on a late Servite drive.

Even in a game in which 83 points were scored, Mater Dei’s defense came up when needed on the two-point conversion prevention, Bailey’s sacks and an interception from Zabien Brown with just over a minute left in the game.

Servite held strong and competed against the Monarchs better than any other team had done this season.

To prove it’s the second-best team in California, it will have to do so against St. John Bosco next week, a challenge that will not be any easier than this weekend.

Defensive dominance propels No. 9 Center Grove past Cathedral

Center Grove allowed just six points against undefeated Cathedral on Friday night.

Center Grove has not found itself in too many close games so far this season. The Trojans entered their matchup with undefeated Cathedral outscoring opponents 373-88 and winning their first eight games by an average of 35.6 points per game.

As such, Center Grove found itself in foreign territory trailing Cathedral 3-0 at halftime on Friday night. The No. 9 team in the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 did not flinch in the face of its first real adversity of the season, though, and kept Cathedral out of the end zone in the second half en route to a 21-6 win.

Center Grove finally found the end zone in the third quarter and that ultimately wound up being enough for the Trojans, as Cathedral did not score again after a field goal in the third quarter. Center Grove tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth for good measure, as its defense dominated Cathedral throughout the second half.

Junior running back Drew Wheat lead Center Grove with 12 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback and Tennessee commit Tayven Jackson added two total touchdowns and went 7-16 for 100 yards. His favorite target was senior wide receiver Harrison Stomps, who finished with four receptions for 42 yards, and his lone touchdown pass was a 43-yard strike to junior wide receiver Eli Hohlt.

Four-star defensive lineman Caden Curry spearheaded Center Grove’s defensive effort with four tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Junior Parker Doyle and senior James Schott led the Trojans in tackles with five apiece.

Center Grove is now 9-0 and has a bye week before beginning the playoffs against Franklin Central on Oct. 29. Cathedral begins the playoffs against Terre Haute North Vigo next weekend.

No. 14 Corner Canyon’s win streak ends at 48

Corner Canyon has lost its first game in over 1,400 days.

Corner Canyon entered its Friday night matchup with Lone Peak one game away from breaking Duchesne’s Utah state record of 48 straight wins.

Instead of etching its name into Utah high school football lore, the No. 13 team in the USA TODAY Super 25 had its winning streak snapped in a resounding fashion. Lone Peak outrushed Corner Canyon 277-25 and chewed up plenty of clock en route to a 41-16 victory.

Corner Canyon got on the board first with a field goal in the first quarter, but that would be its only lead of the game. Lone Peak dominated from that point on. Corner Canyon senior quarterback and USC commit Devin Brown threw two touchdown passes, but it was too little, too late for the Chargers.

Corner Canyon’s last loss came against Skyridge High School on Nov. 9, 2017, in the Utah Class 5A playoffs. Corner Canyon led Skyridge 26-13 at halftime in that game, but mustered just one touchdown in the second half as Skyridge stormed back for a 34-33 win.

Corner Canyon has been the premier program in Utah since its loss to Skyridge and entered Friday night outscoring its opponents 433-135 on the season. Corner Canyon’s last double-digit loss came against Alta High School on Oct. 23, 2015.

Highlights: Every touchdown in the Mater Dei win over St. John Bosco

See every touchdown from Mater Dei’s win over St. John Bosco.

Mater Dei has yet to pass on the crown. St. John Bosco could not force the No. 1 team in the Super 25 out of pole position on Friday night as the Monarchs maintained the upper hand and won 42-21.

After a back-and-forth first half in which neither team led by more than a touchdown, Mater Dei outscored the Braves 21-0 in the second half to get the victory over its rival. Between the second quarter and end of the game, the Monarchs scored 28 straight points.

Elijah Brown was phenomenal, throwing five touchdown passes, two of which were to C.J. Williams and two to Cooper Barkate.

Despite that dominance, it was not a simple victory for Mater Dei. St. John Bosco took the lead multiple times in the first half, and the chess match wasn’t won until halftime adjustments were instituted. Here is every touchdown from the game, with Mater Dei scoring first.

It didn’t take long for the Braves to answer. Katin Houser did a nice job avoiding the rush and scrambled into the end zone.

Bosco kept the momentum with another touchdown, taking the 14-7 lead off a Colin Chase score. He caught the reception over the middle, bounced off a defender and took off for the end zone.

The Monarchs wouldn’t stay down. Brown connected with his star receiver for another score, as he dropped a dime to the contested Williams for the receiver’s second touchdown of the game.

Bosco answered. James added to his impressive performance with a 22-yard score.

In the first half, Bosco quarterbacks Houser and Pierce Clarkson combined for 13-for-17 passing for 245 yards, according to the LA Time’s Eric Sondheimer.

It continued going back-and-forth with neither team able to take a substantial lead over the other. The Monarchs tied the game at 21, which would hold for the remainder of the half.

Barkate, who caught the final touchdown of the first half, would open the second with a score as well.

Williams lofted the ball over another Monarchs-Braves receiver-defender matchup, and Barkate caught it and walked it home.

Finally, as the third quarter was coming to an end, a team took a two-touchdown lead. Jack Ressler was targeted over the middle, bobbled it as a defender tried to wrap him up, but managed to pull it down and get to the end zone.

The Monarchs held for defensive stop after defensive stop. After five Brown passing touchdowns, Ajon Bryant broke free for a 29-yard rushing touchdown to ice the game with just over two minutes left.

The Monarchs beat Bosco 34-17 in the only matchup between the two in last year’s shortened season. If this year is truly back to normal, the two will likely play each other one more time — for the Southern Section Championship.
