The 10 best ice cream treats from a truck, ranked (including the late Choco Taco)

What are the best frozen treats you can buy (RIP, Choco Taco!)?

Like many of you out there on the internet, I mourned the loss of the Choco Taco when it was announced that the incredible frozen treat was getting discontinued after nearly 40 years by its maker, Klondike.

But it also ignited a debate with some friends that I decided to bring here: Where did it rank among the ice cream novelties — that’s what they were called at one camp I attended, which I’ve stuck to since — that you can get from an ice cream truck?

Let’s break them down, and we’re obviously not counting actual soft-serve ice cream here. That’s for another day:

Celebrate National Hot Dog Day with 6 deals and free hot dogs on Wednesday

Celebrate National Hot Dog Day on July 20 with some great deals.

Happy National Hot Dog Day 2022!

We’ve already celebrated by ranking the best stuff to put on your dogs, and now we’re helping you get some free or discounted frankfurters as best we can.

You might be asking: Why is July 20 National Hot Dog Day? Shouldn’t every day celebrate the greatness that is the hot dog?

Alright, fine, we know that’s not what you’re here for. So let’s get to the important stuff: A roundup of places we’ve found that are celebrating hot dogs on Wednesday, July 20 by ether selling them as a discount or giving them away in some fashion:

The definitive ranking of top 10 hot dog toppings for National Hot Dog Day including, yes, ketchup

Ranking the best stuff you can put on hot dogs.

Happy National Hot Dog Day, friends.

It’s a good day to celebrate the classic food so many of us love, the one that’s ignited arguably the internet’s greatest debate (it’s a sandwich! Or … it’s not a sandwich!).

And I’m here to throw some fuel on a fire (that will cook a hot dog): It’s time to debate the best toppings for your frankfurter.

I’m trying hard to be inclusive here and throw in as many as I can think of, an inevitably you’ll reach out and tell me “YOU LEFT OUT [SOMETHING] HOW COULD YOU?”

So, I apologize for that in advance. And for everything else. But I’m right:

Celebrate National Ice Cream Day with 8 deals and free ice cream on Sunday

Let’s help you get some free or discounted ice cream on National Ice Cream Day.

Happy National Ice Cream Day to all who celebrate — and really, shouldn’t we all celebrate ice cream every day, especially on Sunday, July 17?

Why is July 17 National Ice Cream Day? That’s not what we’re here to answer. You’re here to find out about free or discounted ice cream, and we want to get to that as fast as possible so the icy stuff doesn’t melt or run out.

So let’s stop writing about ice cream and get to the important stuff here: A partial list of joints that we’ve found who will give something away or sell you ice cream for less than the usual price:

Here’s how to get a free 7-Eleven Slurpee on Monday, 7/11

FREE SLURPEE!

Hey, guess what? It’s July 11th. But if you write it one way, it’s 7/11! So 7-Eleven is celebrating by giving up free Slurpees, which is great news.

So how can you do it? Here’s the deal, per 7-Eleven: Download the convenience chain’s app or the Speedway app.

Then, go to any 7-Eleven, Speedway or Stripes, grab a small Slurpee and scan the app, and boom, you get it for free.

A great way to enjoy what they’re calling Slurpee Day, especially if the weather outside is very, very hot, which it is in a lot of places right now.

Enjoy!

Beverage of the Week: Lone River’s Ranch Water doesn’t taste like much, and that’s OK

Ranch Water in an air conditioned bar? Meh. Ranch Water outside on a hot day? Oh yeah.

Welcome back to FTW’s Beverage of the Week series. Previously, we’ve folded these in to our betting guides, whether that’s been for the NFL slate or a bizarrely successful run through the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Here, we mostly chronicle and review beers, but happily expand that scope to any beverage that pairs well with sports. Yes, even cookie dough whiskey

My experience with Ranch Water is limited, but I can safely say this: Your enjoyment will weigh on how hot it is outside. The 80-calorie West Texas hard seltzer delivers on every promise the can makes. There are bubbles, there’s a little bit of lime and there’s enough agave to suggest the tequila of the drink’s cocktail inspiration, even if the two feel like distant cousins.

But Ranch Water goes much lighter than its seltzer colleagues. This is either a feature or a bug. Inside an air conditioned bar, it’s not going to give you much more utility than a club soda. That makes it a proper pause in between bigger drinks or a slight incline for anyone looking to avoid the mountain climbing of party liquors.

Outside on a sunny day? That’s where Ranch Water shines. These cans are straight-up refreshing when you push the hot-versus-cold contrast. Let’s talk about each primary flavor.
