TaylorMade releases collegiate MG4 wedges and TP5 balls

TaylorMade has released some college-logoed gear you might want in your bag.

Billy Horschel has long been one of the best-dressed golfers in the world, and that’s thanks to his apparel sponsor, Polo Ralph Lauren RLX. Horschel claimed another win at the BMW PGA Championship last week on the DP World Tour (he also won the event in 2021) and looked good doing so.

The Florida Gator’s first-place paycheck was a hefty one: $1.53 million.

Rory McIlroy’s club breaks at BMW PGA Championship, but he still hits to 10 feet

The Rules of Golf would allow him to replace it during the round.

Rory McIlroy once threw his 3-wood in frustration at the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon and broke it, and there was that time at the 2015 WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral when he angrily threw his club in the lake on the eighth hole, but the club damage that happened on Thursday during the DP World Tour’s BMW Championship was not his fault.

Playing his second shot on the par-5 12th hole at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, hit an iron shot from the fairway and as the ball rose into the air, the head of his club flew off the end of the shaft and tumbled down the fairway.

As McIlroy looked on in shock and disbelief at seeing the club break, the ball landed on a mound to the right of the hole, kicked left and wound up about 10 feet from the cup.

McIlroy missed the putt for eagle but made birdie on the hole.

He clearly did not break the club in frustration or anger, so the Rules of Golf would allow him to replace it during the round.

Irons are attached to golf shafts using very strong epoxies. During the television broadcast, McIlroy could be heard saying all his irons were “re-glued” at last month’s Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

It’s very possible McIlroy will be able to take the clubhead that flew down the fairway to a builder and have it reattached to a shaft that matches his specifications. Repairing and rebuilding the club could easily be done before the start of McIlroy’s round on Friday.

Who it’s for: Golfers who play in soft conditions or who have a steep angle of attack and who want more greenside versatility.

What you should know: The Vokey WedgeWorks V Grind wedge has moderate bounce positioned forward in the sole, along with heel and toe relief, to allow players to use it on soft turf from a square position without digging or from an open-face setup.

The Deep Dive: Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks V Grind

Back in May 2023, Titleist’s in-house boutique wedge division, WedgeWorks, released a limited edition Vokey Design V Grind wedge, a club that had previously only been available to tour players. That club is back and is now being offered as a full-time option through WedgeWorks.

Like many other WedgeWorks clubs, the V Grind was created by Bob Vokey and PGA Tour rep Aaron Dill, who collaborated with players and developed a wedge to suit their specific needs.

Cast using 8620 carbon steel for a soft feel, the V Grind is not chromed, so the raw steel head will rust over time and with exposure to water and air. Like other SM10 lob wedges, the V Grind, which will only be available in 58- and 60-degree versions, has an elevated center of gravity location to help golfers create a lower, more-piercing flight on full swing shots while also generating more spin for enhanced control.

The V Grind comes with 10 degrees of bounce, but the lowest point of the bounce is designed more forward, just behind the leading edge, which should help golfers who make a steep swing or golfers playing in softer conditions.

However, the V Grind also has aggressive heel and toe relief, so if a player chooses to open the face to get the ball up quickly, the V Grind should be able to get the leading edge under the ball in many situations.

The Deep Dive: Scotty Cameron Xperimental GoLo 6.2 LTD

The first Scotty Cameron Super Select putters were released in early 2023, and they were all blade-style offerings, but a few months later, a line extension brought mid-size mallets, including the Del Mar, Fastback 1.5 and a pair of GoLo 6 putters. Over the last few seasons, more and more pros have become open to the idea of using a mallet putter because they offer two distinct advantages over blades: mallets are almost always more stable on mis-hit putters, and their larger size allows for more extensive, easier-to-use alignment systems.

Many of Scotty Cameron’s putters are created with feedback from PGA and LPGA pros, so after seeing the trends and listening to feedback, Cameron and his team developed the limited edition Xperimental GoLo 6.2 LTD putter, and it should be in select stores in about two weeks.

Based on the shaping of the Super Select GoLo 6.0, the Xperimental GoLo 6.2 LTD is milled from a block of 303 stainless steel and features a semi-circular design with a single black alignment line in the back flange. The putter has moderate toe hang thanks to its plumber’s neck hosel, making it ideal for golfers who have a slightly-arced putting stroke.

Unlike the standard Super Select GoLo 6.0, the Xperimental version has been made with a unique face milling pattern that Cameron refers to as “chain-mill.” In addition to the milling marks created by two passes of the circular milling bit, there is a chain link pattern extending from heel to toe. According to Scotty Cameron, the pattern creates a softer feel associated with his deep-mill patterns but with more consistency.

The Xperimental GoLo 6.2 LTD putter has a gold-tone finish that Cameron refers to as chromatic bronze, and it is created during a proprietary process after the topline and the face are hand-buffed.

A portion of the steel has been removed from the sole and is covered by a 6061 aluminum plate. This shifts more of the overall weight to the heel and toe areas, which boosts the moment of inertia (MOI) and makes the Xperimental GoLo 6.2 LTD more stable on mis-hits.

The sole weights in the heel and toe are designed to allow fitters to increase or decrease the putter’s swing weight based on its length or a golfer’s preferences.

Scottie Scheffler’s switch to TaylorMade Spider L-Neck paid off

The world’s No. 1 won an Olympic golf medal, seven PGA Tour events and the FedEx Cup.

Every golfer has a breaking point, and Scottie Scheffler reached his after shooting 68-66-66-66 at the WM Phoenix and finishing tied for third. It was a solid result, but statistically, he was among the worst putters to make the cut. After the West Coast Swing, Scheffler was still the No. 1 player in the world, he had earned four top-10 finishes in five PGA Tour starts, but he had failed to win a tournament.

Before the start of the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Scheffler, who had been using a heel-toe weighted blade putter, switched to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X with a unique L-shaped hosel. The rest of the PGA Tour now wishes he hadn’t because Scheffler won that week, and then won again the following week at the Players Championship. And again, a few weeks later, at the Masters.

The gunmetal-finished TaylorMade Spider putters have an aluminum wireframe body and TaylorMade’s True Path alignment system on the top, comprising a white area with a single black line extending from the topline and forks in the back. The white is designed to grab your eyes’ attention and make it easier to focus on your putt’s intended path. There is also a vibration-dampening system behind the leading edge in the sole.

Scheffler’s Spider Tour X L-Neck has a hosel that creates about 20 degrees of toe hang. It’s subtle, but for golfers like Scheffler, who make a slightly arced putting stroke, the balance is ideal.

Like other Spider Tour putters, it has a Pure Roll insert made with Surlyn that has a series of grooves that point down at a 45-degree angle. The grooves grab the back of the ball at impact and encourage a forward roll instead of skidding and bouncing.

Scheffler’s putter has 3 degrees of loft, a 72-degree lie angle and 35.5-inches long.

In July, after Scheffler won more events with his Spider Tour L-Neck, TaylorMade started selling it to the public.

How much did Scottie Scheffler’s putting improve in 2024?

The best way to judge how well a PGA Tour player is putting is to look at his Strokes Gained: Putting average. This statistic, which can be measured within tournaments and over a season, reveals how much of an advantage or disadvantage a golfer is getting over the average player based exclusively on the quality of his putter, measured in fractions of a stroke.

The PGA Tour leader in Strokes Gained: Putting in 2024 was Justin Suh, with an average of 0.742. That means over the course of an 18-hole round, Suh’s putting earned a 0.742-shot edge on the field’s average score. On the flip side, Justin Thomas struggled on the greens last season and finished with an average of -0.499, which ranked 153rd and meant that Thomas was losing about a half-shot to the field average due to his poor putting.

Scottie Scheffler’s driving, iron player and short game are so good that he is almost always in contention at PGA Tour events. He still has an off-week on the greens from time to time, but as the chart below shows, his Strokes Gained: Putting average and his consistency improved after he put the TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck in his bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. How does Scottie Scheffler’s 2024 putting compare to previous seasons?

Scottie Scheffler has never been among the elite putters on the PGA Tour, and in 2022 he putted well, but his performance on the greens has never matched the quality of his driving, iron play or short game.

As the chart below shoes, Scottie Scheffler’s Strokes Gained: Putting average in 2023 was among the worst on the PGA Tour, but he rebounded in 2024 to finished ranked 69th after using his TaylorMade Spider Tour L-Neck for most of the season.

Scheffler was asked before the start of the Players Championship why he changed to a mallet putter, and this was his answer:

“So I had tried a Spider during the playoffs last year. It was a little bit of a different type of Spider than the one I used last week [the Spider X Tour L-Neck]. At times last year I struggled lining the ball up in the middle of the face, so I lined the ball up on the toe sometimes, and I struggled with a tiny bit of a heel strike, and that was just — you know, just became kind of my miss. Like, if I was fighting a duck hook off the tee, I was fighting a little bit of a heel miss with the putter. This Spider putter is really easy for me to line up.
