Jerod Mayo reveals reason for playing Drake Maye against the Jets

Jerod Mayo explains why Drake Maye went in the game late on Thursday night

(This story was updated to correct a misspelling/typo)

New England Patriots fans got their first look at rookie quarterback Drake Maye in Thursday’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. Coach Jerod Mayo offered his reasoning for putting the signal-caller in the game, as the Patriots dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Maye went 4-of-8 passing for 22 yards. He also showed off his mobility by running for a nine-yard first down on his one drive of the game. It was a promising drive for the quarterback, as he looks to become the franchise signal caller in New England.

“I thought it was a good opportunity for him to go out there with the ones and put a few drives together, move the ball. We’ll watch the film and evaluate,” Mayo said after the game, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

The quarterback position needs a spark in New England, and Maye showed promising signs in the short time he was in the game. At the very least, he gave the coaching staff something to think about as the schedule gets even tougher from here on out.

Jerod Mayo avoids Drake Maye-related question ahead of Jets matchup

Jerod Mayo isn’t taking the Drake Maye question bait

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo sidestepped a Drake Maye-related question when appearing on “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday.

The question came a day after Jacoby Brissett struggled under center for the Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks. He went 15-of-27 on the afternoon, throwing for 149 yards in total.

The offense struggled to pass the ball in the second half, as Brissett threw for 32 yards in total. He was also hit six times in the second half.

Mayo was asked if Maye’s extended reps at practice are potentially “building toward something soon.” With many wanting to see the rookie No. 3 overall draft pick get a shot, Mayo is instead focusing on the Jets, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.

“For me, I’m focused on the Jets,” Mayo said. “I’m not looking that far out. As an organization, we’re still 100% behind Jacoby.”

This could be a conversation worth having sooner rather than later.

The raw skill set Maye brings to the table and the optimism he brings fans may be something the coaching staff should consider. However, they are solely focused on Thursday night’s game for now.

Latest report suggests strong proactive strategy with Drake Maye development

The Patriots’ development process of Drake Maye is unusually aggressive, and that’s a good thing

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye is getting 30 percent of the first-team reps in practice, according to CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn.

Along with getting first-team reps, the Patriots aren’t giving Maye a heads-up of what he’ll face on the scout team in practice. It’s a smart teaching strategy aimed at giving the rookie No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 draft valuable reps behind the scenes.

This undoubtedly means that the organization is trying to ramp up the workload for the rookie with Jacoby Brissett currently in the starting role. New England clearly has a plan for the quarterback, but time will tell when or if he gets to start this season.

In the meantime, they are making sure to get the most out of his reps by having him work in with the first team.

“Jacoby’s the starter. He won the job in the offseason and training camp,” said Washburn. “Drake Maye’s the No. 2, but during the week, he gets 30 percent of the first-team reps. And for those that don’t know, a backup in a normal NFL situation, if they get 5-10 percent of the first-team reps, that would be a lot. Those are valued and extremely high by the starter. Go back to the Tom Brady days. The backup ain’t getting any reps.”

There are no certainties of when Maye will take his first NFL snap. However, one thing is certain: the Patriots are being proactive in his development process, as he figures to be a major piece for the future.

Josh McDaniels makes strong potential QB comparison for Drake Maye

Josh McDaniels had an interesting potential comparison for Drake Maye

Former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had a lofty potential comparison for rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

The North Carolina product was selected by the Patriots third overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Unlike the two quarterbacks drafted ahead of him, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, Maye wasn’t given an opportunity to start right out of the gates.

The team instead went with veteran Jacoby Brissett and chose to take their time developing Maye behind the scenes. This could be a smart move with the offensive line struggles and the Patriots having one of the hardest schedules in the NFL.

McDaniels appeared on Julian Edelman’s “Games With Names” podcast and gave insight into what he believes Maye’s potential will be.

“Got great size, really athletic. I don’t know where he’ll fit in the whole like, the style he’ll play with. I’m interested to see how that develops,” McDaniels said. “Is he going to be a little bit of a runner like Josh Allen was in Buffalo? Guys like that that have those kinds of attributes, you can use them to run the football too. Or, if he is just a pocket passer, a big tall strong guy in the pocket. But the games I’ve seen, he’s done a good job in.”

The fact that Maye drew a comparison to Allen from a great offensive mind like McDaniels’ is certainly a positive sign. Time will tell what Maye’s ceiling will end up being.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that the Patriots, and others around the league, see the potential.

Is this the new timeframe for Patriots QB Drake Maye as a starter?

When will Drake Maye start for the Patriots?

The New England Patriots have a plan for playing time for rookie quarterback Drake Maye. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared the conditions for when the rookie could potentially start.

Jacoby Brissett will be the starter to open the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, there’s a possibility that Maye could start later in the season. Rapoport indicated that New England will sit the UNC product for “probably several weeks,” at least.

“They were really impressed by what he showed at training camp,” said Rapoport. “Obviously, the talent was something that they knew when they drafted him. His command and knowledge for sure impressed the organization.

“But as far as when he’s going to play, they want to put him in a position to succeed, and they also are not going to put him out there unless he is the guy who gives the team the best chance to win. From my understanding, that means they’re going to make sure that the offensive line is good enough to put him out there. The skilled position group is all set for Maye to come in right away and have success. Probably going to be several weeks, at least.”

Brissett was officially named the starter at the end of August, but reviews have been positive for the rookie.

Maye had a strong preseason that included completing 13-of-20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

Although this isn’t groundbreaking news, this is certainly notable, given that fans are anticipating when the rookie will start. It sounds as though they may have to wait a bit, as New England continues with the development process.

Drake Maye makes first comments after losing starting QB competition

Drake Maye comments on Jacoby Brissett being named the Patriots’ starting QB

The New England Patriots named Jacoby Brissett their starting quarterback on Thursday, and Drake Maye will slide in as the No. 2 option, at least for now.

Maye took the news in stride, when speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon.

The rookie had a solid preseason, throwing for 192 yards and scoring both a passing and rushing touchdown. He had a solid showing in the team’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, throwing for 126 yards and a touchdown.

There’s hope that Maye will have a bright future as the eventual starter for the Patriots considering the team selected him third overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Nevertheless, he understands the situation as it stands currently.

“There’s two ways to look at it,” said Maye, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Obviously I want to play, the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and got reps with the 1s all camp … I feel like I left it all out there. No regrets coming back.”

One has to wonder when Maye will see starting action.

There’s a good chance it will be at some point this season. It could happen later in the year, when the rookie will have had at least half a season to fully digest the playbook and get up to speed with the offense.

Former NFL QB makes strong case to sit Drake Maye for 2024 season

Should the Patriots sit Drake Maye?

Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes the New England Patriots should not start rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

Maye had a solid game against the Washington Commanders in the preseason finale, going 13-of-20 passing for 126 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback had to make some tight throws and move out of the pocket, as the offensive line struggled throughout the game.

His performance has fans debating if the Patriots should consider starting him right out of the gates in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The answer to that question would be a resounding no from Orlovsky, who believes the Patriots don’t have enough around their young quarterback for him to be successful.

“You couldn’t pay me enough to start Drake Maye. I wouldn’t do it and I wouldn’t let anybody convince me otherwise,” said Orlovsky. “…Someone give me a good reason why to play Drake Maye. Are you serving yourself, or are you serving what people may want, or what you think what the organization wants or what the fans want?

“There’s three things that rookie quarterbacks need to have success in the NFL, let alone to make sure they don’t get ruined—good scheme and play-caller, plus offensive line, plus skill. Alex Van Pelt, their offensive play-caller, I don’t know a ton about. I like his scheme. I don’t know a ton about him as a play-caller. I think it’s his first time. So I’m not making a judgment on that. They don’t have plus offensive line and plus skill. They don’t.”

The quarterback situation has been a trouble spot for the Patriots with the offensive line and wide receiver unit still needing time to develop.

New England may be in for a long rebuild as they look to put the pieces around Maye. This preseason has been a clear indication that those particular position groups still have a long way to go.

Patriots QB Drake Maye lost a shoe and still made this incredible play

No shoe, no problem for Drake Maye

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye had a tremendous start to Sunday’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

He threw a touchdown pass early in the game, and he even completed a pass after losing his shoe.

The rookie still got the ball out quickly while wearing one shoe and turned what could have been a poor play into a positive one. He avoided the pressure from the Commanders defense and hit running back JaMycal Hasty for a short completion across the middle.

It was an incredible off-script play that showed off some of Maye’s playmaking abilities. When things break down, he’s the kind of quarterback that can still make plays happen.

Maye is making a strong case for the starting quarterback job in New England.

The team seemingly has plans to start veteran Jacoby Brissett right out of the gates, but Maye has shown enough potential early on to make it a difficult decision for the Patriots’ coaching staff.

Alex Van Pelt reveals one factor standing in Drake Maye’s way

Alex Van Pelt had a simple reason for Drake Maye not seeing as many reps with the first-team offense

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt likes what rookie quarterback Drake Maye brings to the table. However, it’s still clear that the coaching staff views Jacoby Brissett as the current starter.

Brissett has played sparingly this preseason. He struggled in his last outing against the Philadelphia Eagles, going 3-of-10 passing for 17 yards and an interception.

After that performance, some have wondered why Maye hasn’t received as many reps with the first-team offense. Van Pelt had one simple answer for that question when speaking with media members on Thursday.

“Jacoby,” said Van Pelt.

Van Pelt did expand on his comments with the explanation that Brissett’s familiarity with the offense, as well as his ability to react in certain situations, were major factors that gave him an edge over Maye, as noted by MassLive’s Mark Daniels.

There is still the sense that the rookie is pushing Brissett, and his opportunity could come sooner rather than later if that trend continues.

Patriots rookie Drake Maye comments on starting QB battle

Drake Maye commented on his starting QB battle with Jacoby Brissett

Much has been made about a potential New England Patriots starting quarterback battle. Jacoby Brissett is the veteran projected to start, while Drake Maye is the rookie trying to make a name for himself.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo feels confident that Maye is ready to run the offense. The rookie is taking everything in stride considering the open competition at quarterback remains with only one preseason game left on the schedule.

“You know, I think I’m just gonna take advantage of my opportunities,” Maye said after Wednesday’s practice. “Jacoby’s done a great job. Great player, great teammate. Taking reps with the ones the whole time. I’m excited for him. Just trying to take advantage of the reps I do get, and when I’m in there, try to have some fun.”

Sunday’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders could be telling as to how the quarterback situation will turn out for New England. A good performance from Maye could make for an even tougher decision for the coaching staff.
