Patriots QB Drake Maye explains long-standing connection to Caleb Williams

Drake Maye and Caleb Williams go way back

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has a connection with Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

The rookies will meet for the first time in the NFL on Sunday. However, they have a connection that predates the league and even college. Williams is viewed as a cornerstone piece for the Bears’ organization, much like Maye is for the Patriots.

Maye discussed his relationship with Williams and the Bears quarterback’s development from high school until now, via Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith.

“You spend a lot of time with those guys, you see them some on visits, some at the Combine,” Maye said. “With Caleb, I’ve seen him since high school. Going to the same camps, we were at Elite 11 with each other, we had some college visits together.

“We’re going through the process again. In college we were friends, I enjoyed watching him do his thing, and now we get a chance to compete. Any time you go against a rookie quarterback in the same class it’s a little extra. I’m looking forward to going out there and getting a chance to play the Bears.”

Both quarterbacks are looking to turn their franchises around, and both have shown flashes of success. Williams has thrown for 1,665 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions.

Maye has recorded 770 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions on the season. Sunday’s game will be a showdown between two promising rookies and a preview of the future of the NFL.

Sights and sounds of Drake Maye’s epic game-tying touchdown pass

What an incredible play

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye saved the game for the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans by completing a last-second touchdown pass to running back Rhamondre Stevenson.

The touchdown tied the game at 17 following the extra point and sent it into overtime.

A “Sights & Sounds” video was released that gives a close-up of the play. As soon as the ball was snapped, Maye went into a scramble drill, avoiding multiple defenders. He somehow found a way to stay on his feet long enough to make a play for his team.

The Patriots weren’t able to get the win in the end, but it was an incredible play that should only add to their offensive confidence moving forward.

Maye showed his ability to perform under pressure when the Patriots needed him the most. We’ll see how well that carries over for the rest of the season.

Titans All-Pro defender sought Drake Maye after game to tell him this

Even the Titans were impressed by Drake Maye

Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons gave praise to New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, following the Titans’ win over the Patriots on Sunday.

Simmons had an impact in Sunday’s game, recording five tackles and a sack in his team’s 20-17 win. Nevertheless, he was impressed with Maye, whose late-game touchdown pass took the contest into overtime. The rookie also managed to scamper away from Titans defenders on multiple occasions, carrying the ball eight times for 95 yards.

Multiple players commented on Maye’s performance after the game, including his teammates. However, Simmons was also complimentary of the quarterback, as transcribed by the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin.

Simmons sought Maye out after the game to tell him “he’s going to be a hell of a player.”

It is clear that Maye is making a strong impression on veterans around the league. It is also clear that the quarterback could be a building block for the future of the Patriots’ organization.

Drafting a quarterback in the first round is always risky business, but it appears the Patriots made a solid selection.

Patriots QB Drake Maye’s blunt response to injury concerns

Drake Maye comments on the injury concerns with his playing style

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is not going to change the way he plays, despite suffering a concussion just a week ago against the New York Jets.

During Sunday’s post-game press conference, following the Patriots’ 20-17 overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans, he made it clear that he will still run the ball.

“I’m not gonna change the player that I am,” Maye said after the game. “I passed the (concussion) protocol… if they’re dropping out guys and there’s some rush lanes up front, I’m gonna make ‘em pay.”

Maye did exactly that against the Titans by recording eight carries for 95 yards, averaging 11.5 yards per rush. He was New England’s leading rusher on the day. It brought his total rushing yards up to 212 yards on the season.

The North Carolina product scampered around and kept drives alive with his legs behind a struggling offensive line.

It has certainly been exciting to see what Maye can do with his legs. The mobility has been a major part of his game, and it could work in his favor as the Patriots continue to retool the offensive line.

Patriots DT gives lofty player comparison to rookie QB Drake Maye

Davon Godchaux had a lofty player comparison for Drake Maye

New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux gave a lofty comparison to rookie quarterback Drake Maye, following the Patriots’ 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

The veteran defender compared the rookie to Buffalo Bills superstar quarterback Josh Allen.

Maye has some of the traits Allen possesses. For one, the rookie’s strong arm has been evident in games this season. The North Carolina product also boasts the ability to run with the football, and he has totaled 212 rushing yards in five game appearances on the year.

He also has the same gunslinging mentality as Allen.

“That’s young Josh Allen 2.0. He looks amazing,” Godchaux said in Sunday’s post-game press conference. “I love watching him on the sideline…I tell the guys all the time that he plays like Josh Allen 2.0. I played Josh Allen in Miami his rookie year, and he didn’t look that good, and Josh Allen is a phenomenal player now. MVP-type player. Drake looks better than Josh did his rookie year.”

Allen has blossomed into a perennial MVP candidate throughout his tenure in the NFL. Maye could potentially get there as well, as he has shown flashes of his playmaking ability in his rookie season.

The organization will need to continue to build around him, but it is evident the talent is there.

Patriots veteran’s Drake Maye comments serve as warning to future NFL

Vederian Lowe believes Drake Maye will be a “dangerous man” in the NFL

New England Patriots offensive tackle Vederian Lowe had high praise for Drake Maye on Thursday.

Lowe is impressed with the rookie quarterback after his first three starts in the NFL. All told, Maye has recorded 564 passing yards, six passing touchdowns and two interceptions. He also recorded the first rushing touchdown of his career in Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets.

He currently ranks fifth amongst all rookies in passing yards and fourth in passing touchdowns, despite only playing in two-and-a-half games.

“He’s gonna be a dangerous man,” said Lowe.

Maye’s progression through the rest of the season will be important with the Patriots coming into the year looking for long-term stability at the quarterback position.

He has shown promising signs as a rookie in a rebuilding offense, and it sounds like his teammates are taking notice of his promising trajectory as well.

Latest update on Drake Maye’s concussion status for Week 9

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye hasn’t been ruled out for Sunday

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo provided a new update for quarterback Drake Maye on Friday morning. The coach indicated that the quarterback is still in concussion protocol.

The rookie suffered the injury near the end of the first half of last week’s game against the New York Jets. He went 3-of-6 passing for 23 yards, along with three rushes for 46 yards and a touchdown prior to the injury.

He has provided a spark to the Patriots offense this season, throwing for 564 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Patriots have been closely monitoring his status this week. Mayo addressed the situation when speaking with media members, while also adding that the quarterback will have a chance to clear protocol by Sunday.

“He is still in the (concussion) protocol and going through that process,” said Mayo. “He’ll be limited, he has been limited this week. But, he’ll be limited today as well.”

The Patriots already have a backup plan in case the quarterback can’t play.

Jacoby Brissett would resume his role as the starter, and rookie Joe Milton III would be the top backup. Tight end Hunter Henry was also seen taking quarterback reps earlier in the week.

Jets LB not taking blame for Patriots rookie Drake Maye’s head injury

Jamien Sherwood isn’t taking the blame for Drake Maye’s head injury

New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood isn’t taking any blame for his controversial hit that knocked New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye out of the game with a concussion.

The linebacker reaffirmed that he was not trying to injure the signal-caller.

Maye was scrambling for extra yards and attempting to slide when Sherwood came down and made the play. The linebacker hit the quarterback in the head, but he did not receive a penalty.

“If it was helmet to helmet, the ref would have called it for one. He just scrambled the pocket,” Sherwood said, per A to Z Sports’ Sophie Weller. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to get to the ball and him as a runner, he just has to do a better job of protecting himself just like I’m trying to do a good job of protecting myself and him as well.

“I feel like in that moment, I did a great job by going over top of him. My shoulder pad might have hit him in the head, but that’s not intentional. …Like I said, I knew in my heart what I tried to do and that’s keeping him healthy. I pray he’s healthy.”

Maye’s progress this week will be worth monitoring.

The Patriots offense has received a spark from his presence over the last three games. A trip to Tennessee to face the Titans will be the next challenge, as the team looks to put together a winning streak.

Aaron Rodgers shares honest opinion of Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye

Aaron Rodgers is impressed with Drake Maye

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers gave an honest breakdown of New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye, following New England’s 25-22 win over the Jets.

Maye was productive prior to leaving the game with a head injury. All told, the North Carolina star went 3-of-6 passing on the day for 23 yards, along with 46 rushing yards and one touchdown.

This is the second time that Rodgers has encountered Maye with the two having met in September. Maye came in late for reps when the game was out of reach for the Patriots.

“I think he was doing a nice job on his feet,” Rodgers said, via Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan. “He’s obviously super athletic. He made a nice run for a touchdown. I don’t know what happened to him. But he’s been playing good the last couple weeks.

“It’s tough on a rookie quarterback coming in, but it seems like he’s getting more comfortable.”

It is certainly noteworthy that Rodgers thinks highly of Maye’s talent.

The Jets quarterback is a future Hall of Famer and part of the last line of quarterbacks from the previous era. If anything, this could be viewed as a tip of the cap to the future of the game.
