2023-24 will be a big year for the Oklahoma City Thunder, as the team has fast-tracked its rebuild and already boasts a very strong roster, even with its treasure trove of draft assets still as strong as ever.

Leading the way for the Thunder will be superstar Canadian guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, one of the most creative bucket-getters in the NBA. His backcourt mate, Australian floor general Josh Giddey, is one of the flashiest playmakers in the league already and a strong rebounder for his position. Forward Jalen Williams is coming off a strong rookie year and looks to be next in line on the team as far as star potential.

All eyes will be on Chet Holmgren, though, the former No. 2 overall pick in 2022 who missed all of last season with a foot injury. If the floor-spacing, ball-handling big man plays as well as expected, the 2023-24 Thunder could take the next step as a team.

Led by point guard Jalen Brunson, the 2023-24 New York Knicks have a solid starting lineup and bench rotation. Brunson is coming off the best season of his career and even played for Team USA at the most recent World Cup. His lefty shot-making and craftiness make him a load to defend.

All-Star power forward Julius Randle, a fellow lefty, is another impressive player, one of the best big men in the league at facing up and driving to the basket. Canadian swingman RJ Barrett can also get hot on any given night and has an even higher level he can hit with more consistency.

The 2023-24 New Orleans Pelicans have a strong starting lineup on paper and depending on health, could have a pretty interesting ceiling this season. Of course, a lot will fall on the shoulders of all-world big man Zion Williamson, one of the most dynamic athletes in the NBA today. When he’s been out there, Williamson has been All-NBA level. The problem is, he’s hurt far too often.

The Pelicans also boast a lineup with two borderline All-Stars in Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum, an above-average starting center, Jonas Valanciunas, and one of the most promising young defenders in the league, Brandon Ingram.

The Milwaukee Bucks heading into 2023-24 made major waves by trading for superstar point guard Damian Lillard to pair with perennial MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo. Lillard provides Antetokounmpo with the best scorer he has ever played with and it’s not even close, while Antetokounmpo will help mask Lillard’s defensive deficiencies.

Veterans Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez will be two vital pieces for Milwaukee, too, the former thanks to his All-Star-level game and the latter thanks to his unique ability to hit threes and block shots at a high level.

The 2023-24 Minnesota Timberwolves will be led by the efforts of big man Karl-Anthony Towns and blossoming superstar Anthony Edwards, the player coming hard and fast for the title of NBA’s best shooting guard.

Besides that duo, All-Star center Rudy Gobert will be vital to Minnesota’s efforts to contend. How he continues to mesh with Towns will be the key to how the Timberwolves’ season will go in 2023-24.

Other key pieces for Minnesota are veteran floor general Mike Conley and two-way forward Jaden McDaniels, who has quietly become one of the most impactful defenders in the NBA.

Entering 2023-24, the Miami Heat have made three Conference Finals in four years and two Finals in that same span, all behind the excellent two-way play of star forward Jimmy Butler.

Butler gets the most credit for Miami’s success since his arrival but Heat center Bam Adebayo has been a great second fiddle, one of the most versatile, impactful defenders in the league and a fantastic playmaker out of the frontcourt.

Miami will also rely on former Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro, a solid scoring 2-guard with a knack for hitting timely shots late in games. Veterans Kyle Lowry and Kevin Love round out the team’s projected starting 5.

When on the court, Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant is one of the best players in the league, capable of scoring at a high level and in an explosive highlight-reel fashion more often than not.

Memphis’ other main franchise cornerstone, former Michigan State Spartan, Jaren Jackson Jr., is one of the most impactful defenders in the league thanks to his shot-blocking and ability to switch. And besides those two, 2-guard Desmond Bane is one of the best shooters in the league and has even developed a good amount of off-the-dribble scoring chops.

The main offseason addition for Memphis, former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, will replace Dillon Brooks in the role of defensive pest with shaky shooting ability.

The 2023-24 Los Angeles Lakers have one of the strongest starting lineups in the league when healthy. They have two Top 15 players in four-time league MVP LeBron James and eight-time All-Star Anthony Davis.

The emergence of 2-guard Austin Reaves, a Team USA member last summer, has also elevated the Lakers’ standing amongst contenders while point guard D’Angelo Russell and 4-man Jarred Vanderbilt round out the lineup with experience and defensive versatility.

Off the bench, offseason additions Gabe Vincent (Miami), Cam Reddish (Portland) and Christian Wood (Dallas) will be important pieces for the Lakers in 2023-24.

2023-24 will be an important year for the Los Angeles Clippers, who have fallen short of very lofty expectations ever since the free-agent signing of superstar forward Kawhi Leonard and the trade for fellow star swingman Paul George.

If those two can stay healthy, the Clippers have a championship ceiling. If they don’t, Los Angeles might be a first-round exit waiting to happen again.

L.A. will also count on former league MVP Russell Westbrook at point this season, as well as its veteran frontcourt of Marcus Morris and Ivica Zubac and key backups Terance Mann and Norman Powell.

The 2023-24 Houston Rockets will be led by former No. 2 overall pick Jalen Green, who has All-Star potential at the 2-guard spot thanks to his shot-making and explosiveness around the basket. With the team’s offseason additions, Green will be able to focus on scoring and attacking the basket.

Fellow blue-chip prospect, former No. 3 overall pick Jabari Smith Jr., will provide the team with defense and outside shooting. The most important offseason additions for the team, veteran point guard Fred VanVleet from the Toronto Raptors and swingman Dillon Brooks from the Memphis Grizzlies, will have huge roles on the Rockets too.
