Why Clemson Will Win

The program appears to have its swagger back.

DJ Uiagalelei was fantastic when he filled in for Trevor Lawrence, but last week the team rolled again in the 52-17 win over Pitt. Maybe it was having No. 16 back, maybe it was because the team was salty after not playing Florida State, or maybe this is just when the program is doing its annual shift into fourth gear.

To stop Virginia Tech is to stop the running game. The Hokies are 4-0 when running for more than 260 yards, and 0-5 when running for that many or fewer. Clemson hasn’t allowed more than 260 rushing yards since the beginning of October 2016 against Louisville.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Clemson running game isn’t working.

The team is still fantastic, and the passing game hasn’t have any issues, but the Tigers can’t get Travis Etienne going on the ground and haven’t hit the 200-yard mark against anyone but Miami.

Notre Dame stuffed Etienne, and the ground attack hasn’t hit 150 yards in any of the last four games. The Virginia Tech run defense isn’t anything special, but the pass rush is among the best in the nation. With time off to prepare, the defense should be as ready as possible for a big performance.

What’s Going To Happen

No, it’s not as simple as Clemson just beating Pitt by 35 and Virginia Tech losing its last game to the Panthers by 33.

Watch out.

This is a very, very dangerous Virginia Tech team with the parts to get hot and do something interesting from out of the blue. It’s struggling, but don’t be totally shocked if all of a sudden the team finds its fastball.

At least for a little bit.

Clemson will get that passing game going, it’ll roll for well over 350 yards, and the defense will overcome a strong day from the Hokie ground game to roll on into the ACC Championship.

Why Pitt Will Win

You think Clemson is a weeeeeeeee bit distracted this week?

Dabo Swinney seems more interested in playing Florida State than Pitt.

Of course, Clemson will be rested and ready, and of course there won’t be any problems walking and chewing ass at the same time. However, this Pitt defense and pass rush requires every team’s full and undivided attention.

The defensive front is pass rush is the second-best in the nation in sacks per game – but tops overall – and leads the way in tackles for loss. The Clemson offensive line is great in pass protection, but it wasn’t able to get the ground game going against Clemson, and it’s going to be under pressure all game long.

The return of Kenny Pickett has done wonders for the Panthers, coming up with 404 yards in the blowout win over Virginia Tech after getting back up to speed with a near-perfect performance against Florida State.

Why Clemson Will Win

Welcome back, Trevor Lawrence.

DJ Uiagalelei has been more than good enough in his place, but Lawrence is Lawrence. Against a pass rush like Pitt brings, you need a veteran quarterback who has seen and done it all. Not that Uiagalelei can’t handle it, but again, Lawrence is Lawrence.

Yes, the Pitt pass rush is tremendous, and yes, it’s going to bother Lawrence a bit and will live behind the line from time to time. Clemson can bring the heat, too, and the Panther offensive line isn’t as tight as the Tigers’ O front five.

Pitt can’t run – it’s not running a lick this week – and Clemson’s secondary has been fantastic. Throw in the pass defense and the time off for the banged up D to get healthier, and this is one ready Tiger team.

What’s Going To Happen

Is this when Clemson turns it on? It’s got its guy back under center, it had a break that was probably a good thing for the finishing kick, and now Pitt will get the anger directed towards Florida State.

Pitt will have its moments, but after sitting on the loss to Notre Dame for a few weeks, look out.

Why Clemson Will Win

We’re all having a bad 2020. Florida State – at least in the sports universe – is having a really bad 2020. It’s a program just trying to get through this and hope for 2021 spring football to start everything over again.

The team has hardly quit, but it lost a slew of the key parts coming into the season, there’s only one win over an FBS team, and now it gets a Clemson team looking to get on a roll on the way to the ACC Championship appearance.

The Seminoles are seemingly getting hit with every possible flag, there’s no downfield passing game, and there’s no pass rush whatsoever to bother Trevor Lawrence, who’s back after missing the last few weeks after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Why Florida State Will Win

Okay, Jordan Travis, let’s give this another shot.

Chubba Purdy gave it a go, got hurt, and now he’s done for the season, and James Blackman opted out. Travis might not be doing much for the passing game, but he’s a baller of a runner who took off for 107 yards and two scores in the shocking win over North Carolina.

There’s a nothing-to-lose factor at this point with the Noles, the parts that are still around are relatively young and looking to make their mark going forward, there’s a lot of movement around to try out a few things, and having safety Hamsah Nasirildeen in his second game back after missing most of the season.

The starting 22 should be able to hang around for a bit, especially against a banged up Clemson team that’s not running the ball all that well, but …

Clemson is about to go off.

There was a time not all that long ago when the world stopped for this game between two college football powerhouses and national title contenders. This year, it’s just another game on the ACC slate, but it’s important for Clemson to get its groove back after sitting on the Notre Dame loss for a few weeks and playing poorly against Boston College the week before.

Style points don’t matter for the Tigers – win out, get into the CFP – but it’s November. This is where this program starts to kick it all in, and with Lawrence back – not that DJ Uiagalelei was bad – here we go.

Why Clemson Will Win

Notre Dame has one of the nation’s best pass defenses. It has allowed just two touchdown passes so far, hasn’t given up more than 260 yards to anyone, has limited the deep plays, and …

It hasn’t played anyone other than Louisville’s Malik Cunningham who can throw a forward pass reasonably well, and it certainly hasn’t seen anything like what’s coming.

Trevor Lawrence was out against Boston College, and all DJ Uiagalelei did was complete 30-of-41 passes for 342 yards and two scores to go along with 25 yards on the ground and a touchdown. He handled the pressure of the comeback win just fine, the Tiger offensive front continues to be a killer, Travis Etienne is only the greatest running back in ACC history – at least yardage-wise – and …

It’s Clemson. The program is used to massive games like this, and when it’s focused, forget it.

And again. along with the issue of not facing too many great quarterbacks, has Notre Dame actually beaten anyone?

Duke, USF, Florida State, Louisville and Georgia Tech are all almost certainly going to finish with losing records, and Pitt might have to push for a winning campaign. Miami, and arguably Boston College and/or Wake Forest as all as good or better than anyone the Irish have deals with so far.

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Is anyone on Clemson healthy?

Lawrence is out as he battles through the coronavirus, star defensive tackle Tyler Davis has a nagging ankle problem, linebackers James Skalski and Mike Jones are out, and the team was generally beaten up after the BC game.

Meanwhile, the Irish have been building for this moment with a bunch of semi-interesting battles with vastly inferior teams.

Yeah, okay, so Notre Dame hasn’t dealt with a killer schedule yet, but in this crazy season with wild upsets and strange performances left and right, the team has done exactly what it was supposed to do against mediocre competition. It was sort of challenged by Louisville, but not really, and that’s it.

The team has been terrific from the start. It played an okay schedule, and it’s just that good – the two things can be true at once.

The six games until now allowed the passing game time to develop a little more, the running attack continues to be great, and outside of 17 first quarter points against Florida State, the D hasn’t allowed much of anything.

The Irish are allowing just 98 rushing yards per game, and the pass rush should be a bother for Uiagalelei from the start.

What’s Going To Happen

Which side of history do you like?

Is this going to be one of those home statement moments for Notre Dame, like the classic 1988 “Catholics vs. Convicts” win over Miami, the 1993 epic over Florida State and Charlie Ward?

Or is this going to be about Clemson rising to the occasion once again? What did it do after it’s close-call win over North Carolina last year? It rim-rocked Florida State by 41.

What did the Tigers do after surviving a mega-scare from Syracuse in 2018? It beat Wake Forest by 60.

Notre Dame is very, very good, but it hasn’t been flashy.

It has the toughness on the lines, the run defense has been outstanding, and at some point, Ian Book will get credit for being a solid above-average quarterback.

But not it has to step up to the big-time against a Clemson team that might be banged up, but will rely on Etienne, a good-enough game from Uiagalelei, and a brilliant performance from a defense that’s going to be challenged by the coaching staff after a bad first half last week against BC.

Enjoy Round 1. The second time around will come in the ACC Championship with a College Football Playoff spot on the line.
