Cardinals elevate S Curtis Riley, TE Evan Baylis to active roster on eve of game vs. Jets

Riley and Baylis give the Cardinals options as Chris Banjo and Darrell Daniels are questionable for Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals have depth concerns at safety and at tight end in Week 5, as both safety Chris Banjo and right end Darrell Daniels are questionable for the game against the New York Jets.

Just in case they are unable to go, the team announced it elevated safety Curtis Riley and tight end Evan Baylis from the practice squad.

Riley actually started last week for Arizona when both Banjo and Budda Baker were out with injuries.

With his elevation, the Cardinals will have five safeties on the roster — Baker, Banjo, Deionte Thompson, Charles Washington and Riley.

With Baylis’ promotion, the Cardinals now have four tight ends on the roster — Dan Arnold, Darrell Daniels, Jordan Thomas and Baylis.

Cardinals-Jets game will be played as scheduled after false positive test

Everything is set for a regularly scheduled kickoff of 10 A.M. AZ time.

The Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets will get to play Sunday as originally scheduled. After there was a presumptive positive test for COVID-19 for one of the team’s players, secondary testing came back showing that initial test was a false positive.

The Jets made a statement on social media.

This evening, we received negative PCR COVID-19 test results for all players, coaches and personnel. Following a presumptive positive COVID-19 test and out of an abundance of caution to ensure everyone’s health and safety, we sent all players and personnel home this morning. We also initiated all NFL mandated protocols including player isolation, subsequent testing and contact tracing. As we have thus far, we will continue to follow required health and safety protocols in the best interests of our coaches, players, staff and community. We look forward to our game this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals and Jets are scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. Arizona time at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Cardinals left for New York Friday afternoon.

Mekhi Becton, Breshad Perriman doubtful for Jets vs. Cardinals

Mekhi Becton and Breshad Perriman are doubtful for the game.

The New York Jets were unable to practice as a team on Friday because of a presumptive positive test for COVID-19, but they released their final injury report. In addition to quarterback Sam Darnold being out for the game, they have two offensive starters doubtful for the game.

Rookie left tackle Mekhi Becton, who has an injured shoulder, and receiver Breshad Perriman, who has an ankle injury, were both ruled as doubtful for the game. Neither practiced at all this week.

Five others are officially questionable for the game.

Cornerback Bless Austin (calf) is questionable after missing Wednesday’s practice and getting limited work on Thursday and Friday.

Safety Ashtyn Davis (groin) was limited all week and is questionable.

Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (foot) was limited on Thursday and Friday. His injury was new on Thursday.

Receiver Chris Hogan, dealing with ribs and a knee, was limited all week. He is questionable, as is linebacker Jordan Jenkins (shoulder, calf), who missed on Wednesday and was limited Thursday and Friday.

Everyone else on the injury report practiced fully and will be available.

Devon Kennard ruled out of game vs. Jets; Chris Banjo, Jordan Phillips questionable

The starting outside linebacker will miss his second consecutive ballgame.

The Arizona Cardinals released their final injury report of the week after their Friday practice. They will be without one of their defensive starters.

Outside linebacker Devon Kennard sat out of practice on Friday with a calf injury and has been ruled out. He did not practice at all during the week or last week and missed the game in Week 4. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters after practice Kennard “is not quite there.”

Defensive lineman Jordan Phillips, who is sick, missed practice for the second day in a row but, per Kingsbury, will travel with the team. He is questionable for the game officially.

Also questionable are safety Chris Banjo (hamstring) and tight end Darrell Daniels (thigh). Banjo was limited in practice on Friday for the second day in a row after sitting out on Wednesday. Daniels was a full participant on Friday after being limited for the two previous days.

Everyone else was a full participant in practice, including cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who was limited Wednesday and Thursday with a calf injury. No one else has a game designation and all are expected to play.

Cardinals-Jets game in question after player tests positive for COVID-19

Cardinals-Jets could be the latest game affected by the coronavirus.

The Arizona Cardinals are scheduled to leave for New York on Friday afternoon to get ready for their game against the New York Jets. Their plans might have to change.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there was a presumptive positive test for COVID-19 on the Jets and the entire team was sent home.

With this news, the Cardinals might not be able to travel this afternoon.

The NFL schedule during the regular season has been affected by the pandemic. The game scheduled between the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers was moved to later this season. The Titans’ upcoming game for Week 5 is being postponed. The New England Patriots did not have quarterback Cam Newton in their game against the Kansas City Chiefs and their next game against the Denver Broncos is tentatively pushed to Monday.

Things for the Cardinals and Jets could go on as planned if that positive test proves to be a false positive. According to Rich Cimini, the player who tested positive has been retested and they are awaiting results, which should come later today.

Clearly, this is a situation to monitor over the next several hours.

REPORT: Cardinals intend on signing veteran CB Prince Amukamara

He had 55 tackles at 10 pass breakups for the Bears in 2019, and he had three interceptions and 12 pass breakups in 2018 for the Bears.

The Arizona Cardinals will be adding a veteran cornerback to their roster. According to multiple reports, they intend on signing Prince Amukarama, entering his 10th season in the NFL.

NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo reported Amukamara was coming for a visit in a few days with the intent to sign a contract.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano added the fact the deal has been agreed to pending clearing COVID-19 testing and protocols.

The move is interesting. Amukamara, who played high school ball in Arizona at Apollo High School (and was featured in our Homegrown Legends team for Arizona), has been a starter for the last eight seasons after not starting as a rookie.

He spent five seasons with the New York Giants, then one with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the las three with the Chicago Bears. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in the offseason but released before the start of the year.

In 2019, in 15 games and 15 starts, he had 53 tackles and 10 pass breakups. In 2018, he had 66 tackles, three interceptions, 12 pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

Once signed, it will be interesting to see what role he plays. Could he replace Dre Kirkpatrick or will he be depth behind him? Would his addition potentially allow the Cardinals to trade Patrick Peterson before the midseason trade deadline? Or perhaps Amukarama is ready to be depth and play special teams. At minimum, it will create potential competition at one of the starting jobs.

Jordan Phillips added to Cardinals’ injury report; Chris Banjo upgraded

The Cardinals might have two safeties back in the lineup against the Jets.

The Arizona Cardinals released their second injury report of the week on Thursday and it appears that they could have two safeties back in the lineup on Sunday on the road against the New York Jets. Chris Banjo was upgraded to limited, giving some hope both he and Budda Baker can be on the field Sunday after the Cardinals had to use Deionte Thompson and Curtis Riley last week.

The three veterans who got the day off on Wednesday — defensive lineman Corey Peters and receivers Larry Fitzgerald and DeAndre Hopkins — were both back to a full load of work no Thursday.

Outside linebacker Devon Kennard, sidelined since the game against the Detroit Lions with a calf injury, was again a non-participant. Tight end Darrell Daniels, who sat out Wednesday’s practice, was also absent Thursday. He has a thigh injury.

Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips missed practice on Thursday. He was a new addition to the injury report with an illness.

Banjo, recovering from a hamstring injury, was upgraded to limited on Thursday after sitting out Wednesday. Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick was limited for the second day in a row with a calf injury.

Budda Baker (thumb), Kenyan Drake (chest) and guard Justin Pugh (knee) were again full participants.

Did not practice:

  • LB Devon Kennard (calf)
  • TE Darrell Daniels (thigh)
  • DT Jordan Phillips (illness)

Limited participation:

  • S Chris Banjo (hamstring)
  • CB Dre Kirkpatrick (calf)

Full participation:

  • S Budda Baker (thumb)
