Cardinals, Titans to hold only one joint practice this week

Both teams are concerned about their health heading into the preseason finale.

The Arizona Cardinals will face the Tennessee Titans in their final preseason game this Saturday. They were set to hold two joint practices Wednesday and Thursday leading up to that matchup.

For the Cardinals, it was going to be the only competitive football work the regular starters were going to get against another team.

Plans have changed.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters in Tennessee that the two teams will still hold a joint practice but it will only be one day. Instead of Wednesday and Thursday, it will only be Wednesday.

Vrabel said, “just from a health standpoint, Kliff and I decided that was best for our football teams.”

Both team want to make sure they don’t get any key players hurt in a competitive practice less than three weeks from the start of the season.

Undrafted rookie RB T.J. Pledger to be among Cardinals’ next round of cuts

The Cardinals must cut down their roster by five players. One of those releases will be running back T.J. Pledger.

The Arizona Cardinals must release five more players from their offseason roster to get to 80 players by Tuesday afternoon. They did not announce their cuts Monday, so that announcement is forthcoming.

However, we know who one of the player cuts will be.

According to multiple reports, undrafted rookie running back T.J. Pledger will be released.

Pledger had done pretty well in the offseason. When head coach Kliff Kingsbury has spoken of the running back room, he recently said that there were six players who could make the team. Pledger was one of the six running backs.

In the Cardinals’ 24-17 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens, he did not gain any rushing yards but did have a 14-yard reception.

Possible cuts for Cardinals after 2 preseason games

The Cardinals must trim five players from their roster by Tuesday afternoon. These are several of the potential candidates.

The Arizona Cardinals have played two preseason games and now have a few decisions to make with their roster. They must trim their roster down by five players to get down to 80 players.

They technically only have to get their roster down to 81 players because of their roster exemption for tight end Bernhard Seikovits, who joined the team last year through the NFL’s International Pathways Program.

But they still must cut five players by Tuesday afternoon.

For these coming roster moves, health at different positions matters. They still must field a team this weekend for their preseason finale and will not play their starters. Which players are potential cuts?

Cardinals must trim roster again by Tuesday

NFL teams must cut their rosters down to 80 players by Tuesday afternoon.

The Arizona Cardinals had the last game of the second week of the preseason Sunday night and now must make a few decisions. They, along with the rest of the teams in the NFL, must make five more moves and trim the rosters down from 85 players to 80 players by Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals announced their first five cuts last week on Sunday, two days before the deadline, as they played their preseason opener on Friday.

These next cuts will largely be determined by health at each position, as the Cardinals still have one preseason game left and will not play their starters.

The final roster cutdown will come next Tuesday when teams must get their rosters down to 53 players.

POLL: How did the Cardinals’ new black helmets look?

They debuted their alternate black helmets on Sunday against the Ravens. What do you think of the new look?

The Arizona Cardinals debuted their new alternate black helmets Sunday night in their 24-17 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens. They wore them with their alternate black jerseys.

It was the first of three games in which they will wear the black helmets this season. They will also have them in Week 5 at home against the Philadelphia Eagles in the same alternate black uniforms and then, in Week 7 — receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ return from suspension — they will wear them with their black Color Rush jerseys at home against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night.

Reviews of the helmets seemed to be positive from the fans.

Quarterback Trace McSorley, who started the game for the Cardinals on Sunday, was a fan.

“I think they look pretty sweet. A pretty slick look to them, so I’m excited for when we’re able to bring them out in the season,” he said after the game. “I think guys enjoyed wearing them this week in practice. They’ve got a lot of hype to them. I enjoyed it.”

What did you think of them?

Kyler Murray likely to call plays in preseason game vs. Ravens

After calling plays in the fourth quarter against the Bengals, he likely will do it again against the Ravens.

In the Arizona Cardinals’ 36-23 preseason-opening win last week, they included an interesting wrinkle of interest. Starting quarterback Kyler Murray, who did not play in the game, called plays in the fourth quarter.

It is something he had been doing in some training camp practices.

It appears that it was not a one-time thing.

Undrafted rookie quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who was on the field running the offense in the fourth quarter when Murray was calling plays, expects Murray to do it again.

“He’ll probably do it again on Sunday,” Guarantano told reporters on Friday.

Guarantano said Murray “brings some life to the games and to the scrimmages” when he is the one on the microphone and headsets.

Guarantano also said that no one knows football better in the quarterback room and that “he’s going to be a good coach one day.”

Guarantano is expected to play the second half of the Cardinals’ preseason game against the Ravens.

J.J. Watt tests positive for COVID, will not travel to Tennessee

J.J. Watt tests positive for COVID, will not travel to Tennessee

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman J.J. Watt was not going to play in the team’s Sunday night preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens and he wasn’t going to play in the preseason finale next week against the Tennessee Titans. However, he will not be with the team for either game and will not make the trip to Nashville.

The team announced that Watt tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be with the team for Sunday’s game and will also not travel with the team to Tennessee.

Watt will have to be away from the team at least five days. The Cardinals were scheduled to have two days of joint practices in Nashville on Wednesday and Thursday before their preseason finale Saturday.

Assuming he will be back with the team after this week, he will have two weeks of practice to get ramped up physically again and should be fully healthy and ready to play in the Cardinals’ Week 1 opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
