Broncos have some familiar faces to Cardinals

The Broncos bring two coaches and three players who were recently with the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals play their preseason opener Friday night at State Farm Stadium against the Denver Broncos. Both teams have new head coaches — Jonathan Gannon for the Cardinals and Sean Payton for the Broncos.

Jonathan Gannon’s goals for Cardinals in preseason opener

Gannon detailed a few goals for the team’s preseason opener.

The Arizona Cardinals play their preseason opener Friday night at 7 p.m. Arizona time at State Farm Stadium against the Denver Broncos. It will be the first game for Jonathan Gannon as a head coach and the first for several of the coaches on his staff in their current position.

On Wednesday before the team’s final open practice at the stadium for training camp, Gannon detailed what were his goals for Friday night’s game.

Cardinals have playing time plan for preseason opener but aren’t sharing it

HC Jonathan Gannon knows what they plan for splitting playing time on Friday in the preseason opener is but isn’t sharing it before the game.

The Arizona Cardinals play their preseason opener Friday night at State Farm Stadium against the Denver Broncos. With a new coaching staff, one thing to watch is how much each group of players is in the game.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon isn’t going to reveal that information beforehand, though.

“We’re locked and loaded,” he told reporters Wednesday before the final practice of training camp at the stadium, “but you ask me other things, I’ll say we’re still talking about it. We’re ready to go. You’ll see what you want to see.”

Gannon did say that quarterback Colt McCoy would play but did not reveal his plan for splitting time between the four active quarterbacks (McCoy, Clayton Tune, David Blough, Jeff Driskel).

“You guys will see how we do it all,” he said.

He indicated as he did a few days before that playing time plans are individualized.

“We make our decisions as a group, as a staff, tell the players why we’re doing what we’re doing (and) go from there,” he said.

The Cardinals kick off Friday night at 7 p.m. Arizona time.

Cardinals sign former USFL RB Stevie Scott

The Cardinals added a running back after placing Marlon Mack on injured reserve.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves on Wednesday on the final day of training camp at State Farm Stadium. Running back Marlon Mack was placed on injured reserve after tearing his left Achilles in practice on Tuesday.

To replace him on the team announced the addition of running back Stevie Scott.

Scott most recently played in the USFL for the Michigan Panthers, rushing for 295 yards and a touchdown in 71 attempts.

The 6-foot-2, 231-pound back played collegiately for Indiana in 2018-2020 and then entered the league as an undrafted rookie with the New Orleans Saints. He spent part of the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos.

His addition is needed because Mack is out and second-year running back Keaontay Ingram also has been out with an undisclosed injury. With a preseason game on Friday and starter James Conner likely only getting a few snaps, the Cardinals need bodies to make it through the game.

Budda Baker won’t say whether he’s playing in preseason opener

He told reporters that will ultimately be a decision made by the head coach.

The Arizona Cardinals will play their preseason opener Friday night at home against the Denver Broncos. Head coach Jonathan Gannon would not reveal last week his plan for playing time for starters and veterans.

Sabefty Budda Baker, leading up to the game, doesn’t have any answers either.

“We’re all trying to play, trying to get some time, but it’s all his decision at the end of the day, so we’ll see,” he told reporters after practice on Monday.

When asked about how important it is to get live game reps, Baker deflected a bit.

“Of course it’s very important,” he said, but then pointed out the team’s practice reps. “We practice like how we would want to play in the game so, of course, the practice reps are very good for us and to get the mental reps as well.”

He did note, though, the one thing you can’t simulate in practice.

“There’s nothing like being able to line against not a teammate and being able to hit him,” he said.

The Cardinals kick off against the Broncos at 7 p.m. Arizona time on Friday. We will see if Baker is one of the players who suits up and plays.

Cardinals’ first preseason depth chart released for 2023

Take a look at the Cardinals’ first preseason depth chart of 2023.

The Arizona Cardinals will play their preseason opener at home against the Denver Broncos this Friday evening. In typical NFL fashion, they released their first depth chart of the preseason.

It is, of course, unofficial.

But it does give us an idea as to what head coach Jonathan Gannon and the rest of the staff think about the state of the roster at the moment.

Below is the Cardinals’ depth chart

Cardinals starters playing in preseason will be ‘case-by-case basis’

Head coach Jonathan Gannon says conversations between coaches and players are already happening.

The Arizona Cardinals play their first preseason game of the year next Friday night at home against the Denver Broncos. This brings the yearly question asked of every team — how much will the starters, and especially veteran starters, play?

The Cardinals have a new coaching staff, so there is no past to look like.

What does new head coach Jonathan Gannon say? What is his philosophy about preseason reps?

It depends.

“Case-by-case basis,” he told reporters Thursday. “Every team’s a different team. Every player is a different player. Those conversations are going on now. We’ll make that decision collectively with the player, make sure he understands why the decision is made and we’ll go from there.”

There is a balance to be had.

The Cardinals have a new offense and defense.

Previously, it made sense to let the veterans all sit out. There was an offensive and defensive system in place for multiple seasons.

However, preseason reps also expose starters and key contributors to potential injury before games even count, which is one of the most frustrating things for fans and players.

Being a new system, perhaps we can expect everyone to get at least a few snaps, with younger players and bubble players on the roster getting most of the looks for more possibilities for evaluation.

But we will find out soon enough, as the Cardinals and Broncos will take the field next Friday night.

Cardinals’ preseason opener to be televised live on NFL Network

The Cardinals’ preseason opener against the Broncos will be one of 10 live games aired on NFL Network in the first week of the preseason.

The Arizona Cardinals released their finalized preseason schedule last month and, initially, none of the games were to be nationally televised. That has changed.

The NFL announced that 23 preseason games would be televised live on NFL Network and one of the Cardinals’ games makes the cut.

Their preseason opener at home against the Denver Broncos will air on NFL Network at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. Arizona time), which is when the game kicks off.

It will be one of 10 preseason games aired live that first week of the preseason.

It will not be an NFL Network crew calling the game, but rather the home team broadcast simulcasted on NFL Network.

As a result, while it will be aired nationally, it will be blacked out in the Cardinals’ and Broncos’ local markets. Why? So the local television broadcast gets the eyeballs, as that local station paid for the rights to broadcast the game.

Cardinals fans can watch the game on free, over-the-air television on Channel 12 KPNX-TV in the Phoenix area. Their preseason games will also air in the Tucson area on KTTU and KMSB, as well as in Albuquerque on KOAT.

Final Cardinals 53-man roster prediction before final cuts

The preseason is over and final cuts come in the next couple of days. Here are the latest projections from Cards Wire’s Jess Root.

The Arizona Cardinals played their final preseason game Saturday night and now must start trimming the roster down to 53 players. It won’t be easy. They have a couple of very deep rooms and will end up cutting or trading quality players.

How will the roster potentially look after Tuesday afternoon?

Based on what we know and what we have seen in the preseason and training camp, here is my final attempt to project the 53-man roster.

3 Cardinals injured in preseason finale

Only one looks like it could be serious, but these injuries could impact final roster decisions.

The Arizona Cardinals finished their preseason schedule with a 26-23 loss to the Tennessee Titans. They came out of the game fairly healthy, but three players got hurt.
