Cardinals cut OL Lachavious Simmons with injury designation

Simmons will revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers.

The Arizona Cardinals are a little more than a week away from final roster cuts, but they have made some roster moves already.

They announced a few roster moves on Monday. They released punter Matt Haack and re-signed running back Stevie Scott.

The final move was offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons. The Cardinals waived him with an injury designation.

He did not dress or play in the Cardinals’ second preseason game on Sunday.

If he clears waivers without being claimed by another team, Simmons will revert to injured reserve, which will end his season unless he and the team reach an injury settlement once he is healthy.

Simmons spent time on the Cardinals’ practice squad last year and was re-signed this offseason.

Cardinals re-sign RB Stevie Scott for RB depth in preseason finale

James Conner likely won’t play and Ty’Son Williams missed the game on Saturday, so Scott returns after getting cut last week.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a few roster moves on Monday. One was the re-signing of former USFL running back Stevie Scott.

The move appears to be for depth in the preseason finale on Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Scott was signed two weeks ago but then released last week.

Scott most recently played in the USFL for the Michigan Panthers, rushing for 295 yards and a touchdown in 71 attempts.

The 6-foot-2, 231-pound back played collegiately for Indiana in 2018-2020 and then entered the league as an undrafted rookie with the New Orleans Saints. He spent part of the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos.

He might get action against the Vikings.

Starter James Conner will not likely play. Ty’Son Williams missed Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

That leaves Keaontay Ingram, Emari Demercado and Corey Clement available.

Scott’s signing suggests either Williams will not be available or that another back in the room might not play.

Nolan Cooney wins punting job as Cardinals cut Matt Haack

Nolan Cooney wins the punting job for the Cardinals.

A quiet position battle has been decided for the Arizona Cardinals. Nolan Cooney has won the punting job.

The Cardinals announced the release of punter Matt Haack as part of multiple roster moves on Monday.

That leaves Cooney as the only punter left on the roster.

Haack has been an NFL team’s punter every one of his six NFL seasons, although he very likely could get picked up by another team.

That is probably why the Cardinals released him a week ahead of final cuts.

Cooney has been very good in the preseason. In two games, he punted five times, averaging 51.8 yards. Three were downed inside the 20. He booted a 65-yarder, all in air yards, on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

His net average was 47.6 yards.

Cooney will now also be the holder for kicker Matt Prater and could take over kickoff duties.

Cardinals can’t stop explosive plays vs. Chiefs

The allowed eight plays of at least 20 yard on Saturday night. HC Jonathan Gannon was quite disappointed.

The Arizona Cardinals fell behind the Kansas City Chiefs after three series and never could recover. The Chiefs dismantled Arizona 38-10 Saturday night in a preseason matchup at State Farm Stadium.

Kansas City piled up 504 total yards of offense and five touchdowns. Quarterbacks combined for 31-of-38 passing for 393 yards and three touchdowns. The Cardinals did not take the ball away and did not record a sack.

What was the biggest problem in the loss?

Head coach Jonathan Gannon was most disappointed in the number of explosive plays the Chiefs had.

“I think that, whatever it was, they had over 300 yards in explosives. I think they had eight or nine explosives,” he said postgame. “You’re not going to beat anybody like that. That is one of our core principles of defense. So truthfully, that is what I am most displeased about.”

The Chiefs had eight plays that went for at least 20 yards, totaling 244 yards on eight plays.

The secondary let players get behind them.

They didn’t tackle or cover well.

It was, of course, against the defending champions, but if the Cardinals are going to have any hope of being competitive once the regular season rolls around, that has to improve.

Cardinals had penalty problem vs. Chiefs but not presnap penalty issues

Seven of the Cardinals’ eight penalties and eight of the nine they were initially called for were physical and not mental mistakes.

The Arizona Cardinals were one of the NFL’s most-penalized teams over the last several seasons. Under new head coach Jonathan Gannon, they expect to be much more disciplined.

On Saturday, penalties were a problem. They were penalized eight times for 82 yards. But there was one positive. Only one was a presnap penalty, a false start by guard Marquis Hayes.

It was the second game in a row they had only one presnap penalty.

What led to the penalties?

“I think it is a lack of technique,” he said postgame, noting it was not about focus or discipline When you play with bad technique, you get penalized, and that is what happened. You obviously have to get that corrected. They kind of go in waves a little bit and sometimes that is how the crews calling it and we have to play within the rules. Typically, when you get penalized it is for bad technique.”

It was bad technique.

They had three holding penalties, an illegal block, an ineligible man downfield and two personal fouls.

They had a declined penalty for hands to the face.

In all but their false start, it was for bad technique. They are physical mistakes instead of mental mistakes.

Through two preseason contests, the mental mistakes have been minimal. Now if they can avoid the technical mistakes, that will bode well for the regular season.
