Why Air Force Will Win

Can Air Force stop the run? Yeah.

It stuffed Navy’s offense to just 90 yards on the ground in the 40-7 win back in early October, the linebackers are fantastic at swarming, and the run D overall has been a relative rock allowing over 150 yards just once, giving up 179 to Boise State.

The Falcons have the defensive front to hold up against FB Jakobi Buchanan – who wasn’t used much in the 15-0 Army win over Navy, but is a key to making this thing go – and know how to handle this type of O.

On the other side, the Air Force ground game is rolling. It has cranked up over 300 yards against everyone but San Jose State, QB Haaziq Daniels has been great at hitting the open throws – connecting on 11-of-14 passes over the last two games – and the O is rolling. But …

Can Army stop the run? Yeah.

The weather had a whole lot to do with it, but the Navy running game didn’t go anywhere last week. The Knights have had a few more issues against the run over the second half of the season, but it has yet to be hit for more than 200 yards even with games against Tulane and Georgia Southern.

The Air Force defensive front doesn’t get into the backfield, which isn’t the worst thing in the world against this Army attack, but it would be a help to blow things up before they can get going.

What’s Going To Happen

Army is a different team in Michie Stadium.

The competition was better on the road, but it lost to Cincinnati and Tulane – its only two defeats on the year – and hasn’t had too many problems at home.

However, it needed a late rally to get by Georgia Southern – even though it stalled the Eagle option attack – and it lost to Tulane by 26.

Both defenses are good, but Air Force can throw a little bit if it has to. Army can’t.

Why Navy Will Win

The defense has been solid over the last few weeks.

It got lit up by SMU on Halloween and had issues over more of the season, but it was able to hold Memphis to under 300 yards and kept Tulsa under wraps in a 19-6 Golden Hurricane win.

The run defense doesn’t get into the backfield, but it’s been able to hold up against the run over the last month – obviously, slowing down the Army running game is everything.

Navy isn’t bad when it has to throw, averaging over 17 yards per completion and with the ability to throw a wee bit when it has to. Army will hit a big downfield pass once in a while, but the attack really can’t throw if it needs to.

Why Army Will Win

It’s sort of a problem for Navy the it can’t run.

The ground game has been just okay, not great, hitting 200 yards just once in the last four games and averaging just 3.7 yards per carry. The offense isn’t controlling the time and the action, it’ll lose the time of possession battle by at least five minutes, and it doesn’t have the defense Army brings.

The main problem for the Midshipmen will be on third downs. Army is great at converting on third down, Navy isn’t.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a home game for Army with the game being moved from Philadelphia.

Air Force doesn’t have the Army type of ground game, but it’s a mainly-run only offense that came up with close to seven yards per carry and 369 yards in a 40-7 win over Navy earlier in the year. Army won’t win that easily, but it runs better than Navy and is a whole lot stronger defensively.

However, Navy played a better schedule. It beat Tulane on the road, and Army just lost 38-12 to the Green Wave. Don’t get too hung up on that – Army just held the Georgia Southern option attack to 175 rushing yards and hasn’t allowed more than 200 this year.

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can Georgia Southern stop the run? Yup.

The Eagles are brilliant at controlling the clock, the running game is the fifth-best in the nation, and linebackers and young safeties are guided missiles against the run for a defense that hasn’t allowed more than 35 rushing yards in either of the last two games, hasn’t given up more than 150 on the ground all year, and gave up just two touchdown runs in the last five games.

Can Army stop the run? Sort of.

It was a rock over the first part of the season, but it gave up over 100 yards in each of the last four games. It’s a very good run D, and the team knows how to hold up against this style, but the Georgia Southern ground attack is a machine with over 700 yards in the last two games.

Army has been able to win games even when the ground game isn’t ripping it up.

This is the second-best running team in the nation behind Air Force, and it’s averaging over 300 yards per game, but it hasn’t quite been the dominant force it usually is when it’s humming …

And it’s still 6-2 with the two losses to Cincinnati and Tulane from the American Athletic Conference.

There’s more of a power element to the Army ground attack than Georgia Southern brings – 260-pound Jakobi Buchanan is a hammer – and it’s got the big play ability on the outside.

In a game like this, field position matters – Army has a far, far better punting game.

What’s Going To Happen

How much does home field matter? Army is 5-0 at home and 1-2 on the road, and it’s the same for Georgia Southern – 5-0 at home and 1-2 on the road.

However, Army beat three FCS teams at home along with a ULM team that hasn’t won a game, and Georgia Southern’s two losses came to Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

The Eagles are playing better than Army with a stronger defense and a bit more efficient an offense. Expect the two teams to combine for well over 500 rushing yards in a game that will be among the fastest of the day.

Why Army Will Win

The Army offense has picked it back on on a run of four straight wins. Very, very quietly, the Black Knights have gone 6-1 with the lone loss coming to Cincinnati, giving the nation’s No. 7 team one of its toughest games of the year.

Rested – and very, very salty – after not getting to play against Air Force last week, the team should be able to get to 300 yards against a Tulane team that statistically has a strong run defense, but that’s because everyone’s throwing against its bad secondary.

The Army defense hasn’t allowed 200 rushing yards – it held Cincinnati to 69 yards – and it hasn’t been hit hard by anyone’s passing game but Abilene Christian. However …

Why Tulane Will Win

Army has played one decent team.

Give it credit for giving Cincinnati a fight in the 24-10 Bearcat victory, but three of the wins were against FCS teams, ULM has yet to beat anyone, and Middle Tennessee and UTSA are Middle Tennessee and UTSA.

Tulane has been able to find a good offensive balance – with over 200 yards rushing and receiving over the last few games – and the passing attack has found something in freshman Michael Pratt. He’ll give up an interception, but he’ll keep the offense moving.

Tulane has a run defense. UCF was able to come up with a big performance against the Green Wave, but the pressure from the defensive front is enough to bother Army’s offense from getting wide enough to get into a groove.

However, a mediocre Navy team was able to beat Tulane with just 204 rushing yards. Army can run better than Navy, but its secondary is about have a problem with the improved Green Wave passing game.

It’s the second part of a three game season for the Bears, losing at Jacksonville State two weeks ago 34-28. They weren’t able to do much offensively, but Deondre Johnson came up with a kick return for a score and caught a touchdown pass, Tyray Devezin ran well, and the defense did a decent job with the pass rush.

Is the Army running game ready to ramp it back up?

It struggled against The Citadel past week with just 153 rushing yards, but it was still able to win. However, the Knights end this if they’re able to get things working like normal.

The key is to keep the UTSA offense off the field. The Roadrunners don’t do much in the time of possession fight, and Army is doing a wonderful job on third downs of not only keeping the chains moving, but getting its defense off the field.

UTSA is 0-2 on the year and 0-13 since 2018 when it doesn’t convert 32% of its third down tries. Army is allowing teams to convert on 31% of their chances. However …

Why UTSA Will Win

The UTSA run defense has been good.

It had problems against UAB, but that was the only time it allowed more than 200 rushing yards. After getting hammered for over five yards per carry and 28 rushing scores last year, the Roadrunner D has tightened up giving up just six rushing scores so far and allowing 4.2 yards per carry.

The defense is doing a fantastic job of getting into the backfield, it’s among the best in the nation in forcing takeaways – coming up with ten – and when it comes to third downs, it’s even better than Army is at getting off the field.

Throw in an offense that’s been far stronger than it was last year, and it has the ability to make Army press a bit.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Army take over the game with its ground attack? That’s not a sure thing considering the Roadrunners held up last week against the BYU running game.

UTSA is going to have issues with teams that have a bit of an offensive balance, and that’s certainly not Army.

So far, out of Army’s four wins, Middle Tennessee is the only one that has a victory over an FBS team. UTSA is better than anyone Army has faced outside of Cincinnati.

Who better to know how to handle an option offense than a team that lives with the ground game?

The Citadel offense hasn’t been as dominant as it needs to be, but the ground game ran for 200 yards against USF and ripped through Eastern Kentucky for 347.

The offense has to own the time of possession battle – the Bulldogs are keeping the ball for well over 33 minutes a game – needing to somehow take Army out of its rhythm.

The Citadel can’t stop the run.

Clemson took it easy in its blowout win, but USF rumbled for 302 yards on the ground. Army might have been slowed down by Cincinnati, but it rumbled for well over 1,200 yards in the other three games with 16 touchdowns.

That’s one problem for the Bulldogs, but the bigger issue is an Army run defense that’s been a brick wall. It gave up a rushing touchdown against Cincinnati, and that’s been it. No one else has rushed for a score against the Knights, and no one has hit the 90-yard rushing mark.

Both teams will run, but Army will do it a whole lot better. The Citadel will have to try to throw, and it’s going to get ugly as soon as it has to try to mount some sort of a comeback.

Abilene Christian doesn’t have much of a ground game, and even though the defense isn’t all that bad, it’s about to deal with a grouchy Army team that couldn’t quite get going against Cincinnati in last week’s 24-10 loss.

ACU was able to keep UTEP from doing much of anything on the ground, but there was one massive issue – the Wildcats couldn’t keep the chains moving.
