Post Game Recap: Texas A&M offense goes stale in the second half as the Aggies fall 26-20 to No 11. Alabama

Texas A&M’s offense grinds to a halt in the second half dropping a critical game to Alabama

On Saturday, Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 SEC) fell to the No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1, 3-1 SEC) at Kyle Field in Bryan/College Station.

Defense was the name of the game to start the day for both teams. While the Aggies produced a few short drives to quickly get Alabama off the field, the Crimson Tide’s defense was more of a bend but don’t break. Even though both teams moved the ball well during the first quarter, the score was deadlocked at three apiece.

Then, in a sudden switch, Alabama caught the Aggie secondary sleeping as Alabama QB Jalen Milroe found wide receiver Isaiah Bond running free for a 52-yard strike to take a 10-3 lead. Following A&M’s punt, then a three-and-out by Alabama, Nick Saban sent out the punt team with special teams ace Ainias Smith waiting deep. Almost a carbon copy of last week, Smith muffed the punt but quickly picked up and scampered through the punt coverage for a 46-yard return, putting the Aggies in a scoring position.

Max Johnson only needed one play as his brother Jake Johnson slipped out of the backfield for an easy toss to tie the game and log another Johnson-to-Johnson touchdown this season, tying the game 10-10. DJ Durkin continued to bring the pressure, forcing Alabama into back-to-back incompletions and notching a third-down sack, leading to a 56-second drive resulting in another punt.

The Maroon & White then went on an 11-play 53-yard drive that was capped off by a 1-yard Le’Veon Moss touchdown to take the lead with around three minutes left. Alabama couldn’t score, punting it away, allowing the Aggies to go into the half with a 17-10 lead.  Max Johnson went into the locker room with 151 yards passing and one touchdown, with four receivers getting two receptions each. The defense was on fire again in the first half with four sacks.

The start of the second half was more of the same for the Aggie defense; they gave up a few plays, giving the Crimson Tide some momentum before a huge sack followed up a sophomore defensive back Bryce Anderson interception. Unfortunately, the Aggies would give it right back via an interception to freshman Tide safety Caleb Downs. Alabama would cash in with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Burton to tie the game 17-17.

Quarter number three was forgettable, with Alabama scoring 14 unanswered points to push the game to a 17-24 game heading to the final frame of the contest. To add insult to injury, Max Johnson was called for a safety for an intentional grounding while being tackled in the endzone, pushing the score to 17-26.

The Aggie would make a game of it late in the fourth when Johnson hit Smith for 39 yards, eventually leading to a Bond field goal to cut the lead to six. With a little over 2 minutes left, the Aggies’ onside attempt failed, leaving it up to a little gassed defense. They forced the Tide into a 3 and 7, but Alabama RB Jase McClellan took a bobbled catch for eight yards and a first down, icing the game.

Texas A&M will have to hit the ice bath and put this tough loss behind them as they will travel to Tennessee to take on the Volunteers next Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

How to watch: Texas A&M – Alabama football game

The Aggies will take on the Legendary head coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide at Kyle Field this weekend

Texas A&M (4-1, 2-0 SEC) will host the No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1, 2-0 SEC) at Kyle Field on Saturday in College Station.

The one thing that’s apparent in the SEC this season is that at least five teams have a legitimate chance to capture the SEC crown this year. Your normal suspects, Alabama, Georgia, & LSU, have all looked beatable, with the Crimson Tide and Tigers already having three losses between them entering the season’s halfway point.

The Aggies can make major headway in the SEC West if they can keep Alabama’s dynamic playmaker, quarterback Jalen Milroe, bottled up, allowing the Aggie offense plenty of time to run their offense. With the Maroon & White starting to gel at the right time, this will be a close contest.

Texas A&M’s 2023 regular-season home schedule has contests against ULM, Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and ACU.

The Aggies’ Road schedule features games at Miami, Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and LSU.

A brief look back Texas A&M’s program changing win over Alabama in 2012

In 2012, Texas A&M shocked college football by going into Alabama and knocking off the No 1 team in the nation

Wins against Alabama are sacrist in the history of Texas A&M. There have only been three victories among the 15 games played between the two programs. However, on November 10. In 2012, the No 15 ranked Aggies traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and returned to College Station with one of the biggest wins in the history of the team.

Not many people gave the Aggies a snowball’s chance on a hot beach to beat an undefeated Nick Saben-led Crimson Tide team that was on a 13-game winning streak. Apparently, no one informed Texas A&M as they would not be bullied into a loss.

The Aggies jumped out to a 20-0 lead, stunning the Alabama fans into silence as they watched Johnny football dance around an elite Crimson Tide defense on nearly every possession.

However, the Tide was ranked No. 1 for a reason, and they came roaring back in the second quarter to cut the lead down to a touchdown going into halftime. Then, they followed up with the only point in the third quarter with a field goal for 17 unanswered points and only down be three with a full quarter left to play.

The Maroon & White, sensing that the momentum was slightly slipping away, rattled off the two scores of the 4th quarter, pushing the lead back up to 29-17. Then, with under two minutes left in the game and needing a touchdown to take the lead, Alabama had to go for it on fourth and goal. At that point, freshman defensive back Deshazor Everett made the play of the game, intercepting AJ McCarron and giving the Aggie offense a chance to close out the game.

It wasn’t without some drama, but an offsides penalty gave them a fresh set of downs, allowing them to run out the clock instead of punting, ending the game with a final score of 29-24.

‘I feel like this game is always more personal, every time I play them.’ Ainias Smith is all business ahead of Texas A&M vs. Alabama

Texas A&M senior wide receiver Ainias Smith’s recent comments regarding Alabama and Nick Saban shows a player eager for revenge in 2023.

It’s Alabama week for Texas A&M, and for one of the leaders in the locker room, this rivalry is even more personal this time. Senior wide receiver Ainais Smith, who is second on the team in receptions (22) and receiving yards (343), is set to face head coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide for the fourth time in his Aggie career, missing last year’s matchup after his devastating season-ending leg injury.

While Smith is eager to return to face the Tide in a pivotal game for both programs’ season trajectories, things became personal when discussing Saban’s handling of his brother Maurice Smith’s transfer request in 2016. During Monday’s annual presser, Smith’s memorable quote regarding his brother’s public battle with Saban before eventually playing his final collegiate season for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.

“I feel like this game is always more personal, every time I play them,” Smith stated. “I don’t know — what had happened, that’s in the past now. I’m not able to control it, but every time I do look on that sideline, I do think about what had happened. I definitely be thinking about it. So it’s more personal, for sure.”

As a sophomore in high school during the incident, Smith’s initial criticism in 2016 was solely based on the treatment his brother received from Saban during the transition, altering his view of his own potential collegiate future in Tuscaloosa. Seven years later, the Aggies’ sole victory over Alabama came in 2021. Smith would catch the game-tying touchdown that ultimately led to the Seth Small game-winning kick in one of the most significant victories in program history.

Starting with his freshman season in 2019, Smith has four touchdowns against Alabama in three games. Knowing at least what Saban is looking for from his offense behind the arm and legs of redshirt sophomore signal caller Jalen Milroe, this Tide team has been somewhat underwhelming compared to the elite rosters of years past.

“I kind of know what Nick Saban expects from his offense, from his defensive side,” Smith stated. “I’m not trying to be cocky or nothing, but his class — my brother’s class, they was nice. They was real nice. No disrespect to Alabama right now, but them boys was always [No.] 1, 2 — you know what I’m saying? Like, it was no questions. Right now, with the rankings, I guess you could say — I ain’t even gonna say that. But at the same time, I know what Nick Saban wants, and we’re gonna mess that up. You know what I’m saying? If them boys don’t got no momentum for real, we’re gonna have to take that away, immediately, for sure.”

While I have no idea how things will pan out on Saturday afternoon, one thing remains clear: no matter the score or situation in any quarter, Ainias Smith will be ready whenever his number is called.

Texas A&M will host No.10 Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m. CT, inside Kyle Field (TV: CBS).

2026 4-Star QB out of Tennessee will visit Texas A&M this weekend

A part of a long visitors list for Texas A&M vs. Alabama, 2026 4-star QB Jared Curtis will reportedly also be in attendance for a visit.

Texas A&M’s (4-1, 2-0 SEC) ever-growing visitors list this weekend as the Aggies take on the visiting Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1, 2-0 SEC) will include one of the top signal callers in the 2026 recruiting class, as four-star quarterback Jared Curtis will take an unofficial campus visit, and attend the highly awaited matchup.

According to 247Sports Composite, Curtis is currently positioned as the 20th-ranked prospect in the 2026 cycle, the 2nd-ranked quarterback, and the No.1-ranked player in Tennessee.

Early last month, Curtis released his initial Top 10 program list, which includes Georgia, Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M.

With even more room to grow, Curtis currently stands at 6-3 and nearly 220 pounds, throwing for 2,285 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions, including 481 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, all while leading Nashville Christian to a 10-3 record and the Division II-A title game in 2022.

Already receiving offers from nearly every blue-blood program in the country, this will be his second campus visit since June 2, as Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff aren’t wasting any time preparing for the future at the most critical position in the game.

Texas A&M will host No.10 Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m. CT, inside Kyle Field (TV: CBS).

Initial injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. Alabama

After head coach Jimbo Fisher’s Monday press conference, here is the initial injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. Alabama.

Texas A&M (4-1, 2-0 SEC) is set to take on the visiting Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1, 2-0 SEC) in by far the biggest matchup in college football in Week 6, as both teams are fighting for SEC West supremacy, especially after LSU dropped its second game of the season after falling to Ole Miss on Saturday night.

After demolishing Arkansas 34-22, second-year defensive coordinator D.J Durkin is a man on a mission, orchestrating an impressive turnaround for an Aggie defense that has dominated the trenches, recording 14 sacks and 30 tackles for loss in their last two games while holding the Razorbacks to 174 total yards on the afternoon.

Amid soaring expectations after starting the season 1-1, head coach Jimbo Fisher is taking his usual “nameless, faceless” approach to face the juggernaut that is Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide, but sounds as confident as ever heading into Saturday’s mid-afternoon showdown. On Monday, Fisher spoke to the media to preview the team’s preparation for the Tide while also providing several updates regarding the Aggies’ current injury report.

So far, so good, as sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart was the only Aggie starter who sustained a minor ankle injury against Arkansas but did sit out for most of the second half after taking a brutal hit out of bounds after an impressive toe-tapping catch on a third-down conversion. As of today, Fisher stated that Stewart “should be good to go” against Alabama.

While the return of safety Jardin Gilbert remains in flux as he continues to recover, the same can be said for offensive tackle Reuben Fatheree II, who is apparently still rehabbing with no given return timetable.

For Alabama, linebacker Deontae Lawson is questionable with an ankle injury, and wide receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr. will sit out due to a hip injury.

Texas A&M will host No.10 Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m. CT, inside Kyle Field (TV: CBS).

Report: Tyler Buchner to get first start for Alabama against USF

After Jalen Milroe threw two interceptions in a loss to Texas, the Crimson Tide appear to be making a change at quarterback.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are reportedly making a chance at quarterback.

Tyler Buchner, the sophomore transfer from Notre Dame, will get the start in Week 3 against South Florida, according to 247Sports’ John Talty.

Jalen Milroe, who started the first two games for the Tide, has thrown for 449 yards and five touchdowns through two games, and he sits third in the SEC with a QBR of 76.6 through two games. However, he also threw a pair of interceptions during Alabama’s Week 2 loss to No. 6 Texas, the Tide’s first non-conference home loss in 16 years.

Buchner saw some relief action in the season opener against Middle Tennesee, completing 3-of-5 passes for 27 yards and rushing for a nine-yard touchdown. He also played under Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees the last two seasons when both were with the Fighting Irish. Buchner went 67-118 (56.8%) for 949 yards, 6 TDs, and 8 INTs at Notre Dame, and he added 459 yards and 7 TDs on the ground.

Alabama plays USF on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
