Alabama AD Greg Byrne calls on Crimson Tide fans to ‘fight back’ with NIL

Alabama’s athletic director commented on NIL via a statement Wednesday.

In the growing landscape of college athletics today, NIL continues to become more-and-more of a factor in the day-to-day of programs across the country.

This thought is likely echoed by many across college football, with athletic programs seemingly starting to get in bidding wars in order to potentially acquire talent via recruiting and the transfer portal.

Many in athletic departments across college football have commented on this before also, the latest of which was Alabama Crimson Tide athletic director Greg Byrne on Wednesday afternoon via a statement on social media.

“Over the past few years, there have been drastic changes in college athletics,” Byrne said. “We have been careful during this transitional period to protect our position at the top of college athletics while being mindful to listen, engage and learn from our generous supporters, proud alumni and unrivaled fans to make sure that we protect our great traditions here at Alabama. But there’s a time for talk and a time for action. Now is a time for action.”

“Although we have been competitive from an NIL standpoint, our competition has us in their sights and are actively trying to surge ahead with NIL. You have heard examples of other teams using promises of million-dollar paydays to lure away our players or convince them not to come to Alabama. It is time for the Bama Nation to fight back.”

In the statement Wednesday, Byrne called on Alabama fans to “fight back” with NIL by donating to Alabama’s “Yea Alabama.”

The full statement from Byrne posted Wednesday on social media can be found below:

Alabama AD Greg Byrne comments on future scheduling after missing CFP

Byrne commented on potential scheduling after missing the CFP.

As a result of the Alabama Crimson Tide missing out on the College Football Playoff (CFP) in favor of the SMU Mustangs this past Sunday, there has been some talk surrounding college football on the impact of scheduling.

In particular, should teams from conferences such as the SEC and Big Ten schedule tougher non-conference opponents, or should they play arguably lesser teams in the non-conference to pick up wins?

Well, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne commented on this topic Sunday in a statement on social media, which was posted shortly after the Crimson Tide missed the CFP in favor of SMU.

“Disappointed with the outcome and felt we were one of the 12 best teams in the country,” Byrne said. “We had an extremely challenging schedule and recognize there were two games in particular that we did not perform as well as we should have.”

“We have said that we would need to see how strength of schedule would be evaluated by the CFP. With this outcome, we will need to asses how many P4 non-conference games make sense in the future to put us in the best position to participate in the CFP. That is not good for college football.”

“With that said, we do not need to hang our heads and now need to finish this season strong. We have a great group of young men who have led us with Coach DeBoer through the last year and we look forward to our opportunity in the ReliaQuest Bowl.”

During the 2024 season, Alabama played a total of four non-conference opponents, only one of which came from a Power 4 conference – Western Kentucky (CUSA), South Florida (AAC), Wisconsin (Big Ten), and Mercer (FCS level). Of those four, only Wisconsin was the lone team to not finish with a record either at, or above, .500.

Next season, Alabama’s non-conference schedule is headlined by a trip to Florida State, while the Crimson Tide will host ULM, Wisconsin, and Eastern Illinois. The year after in 2026, Alabama will travel to West Virginia, as well as host South Florida and Florida State.

In the future, Alabama also has notable home-and-home matchups set with the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2027-28, as well as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in 2029-30.

So, will Alabama’s way of scheduling non-conference opponents change going forward? Time will ultimately tell.

Where can I watch the new CFP rankings for Alabama football?

Tuesday night’s new CFP rankings will offer an updated look at the playoff picture for Alabama football. Here’s how to watch the rankings.

Alabama Crimson Tide fans will be watching this week’s updated College Football Playoff rankings with a sense of curiosity.

After suffering an ugly 24-3 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman over the weekend, exactly how far the Crimson Tide (8-3 overall, 4-3 conference) will fall in Tuesday’s updated rankings remains to be seen. For comparison, Alabama fell to No. 13 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, released Sunday.

Kalen DeBoer’s team wasn’t the only SEC team in the rankings to fall in Week 13. Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels (8-3) also lost, 24-17 to the Florida Gators (5-6) in Gainesville on Saturday.

Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2), while ranked below Alabama in the CFP, suffered from the upset bug in a 43-41 loss to the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Yet the Aggies will play for the SEC crown in Atlanta, if they beat the Texas Longhorns (10-1, 6-1) Saturday in the first meeting between the Lone Star State rivals since 2011.

There’s been a lot of chaos in the 2024 college football season, particularly in the SEC, and even more could still lie ahead.

Alabama football CFP rankings projection

With such an woeful performance against an Oklahoma team that was just 1-5 in conference play, coupled with a previous loss against a now five-loss Vanderbilt team, I expect Alabama to fall to No. 13 or 14.

How many teams are in College Football Playoff 2024?

For the first time, there will be 12 teams participating in the College Football Playoffs — five automatic bids for each of the Power Four conference champions, and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. The remaining seven slots are given to at-large teams.

Last week, Boise State (10-1) jumped to No. 12 in the rankings — two spots higher than the highest-ranked Big 12 team (BYU). That put Ashton Jeanty and the Broncos as the projected No. 4 seed, with the Big 12 champion as the No. 12 seed. Oregon (11-0) has been No. 1 in the CFP rankings since they were initially unveiled on Nov. 5.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The top four seeds will have a bye when the CFP kicks off. The next four highest-seeded teams will host on-campus playoff games as follows:

  • No. 5 vs No. 12, winner will play No. 4
  • No. 6 vs No. 11, winner will play No. 3
  • No. 7 vs No. 10, winner will play No. 2
  • No. 8 vs No. 9, winner will play No. 1

Tuesday night’s new CFP rankings will offer an updated look at the playoff picture and bracket for Alabama football. Here’s how to watch the rankings.

Alabama Crimson Tide fans won’t want to miss this week’s updated College Football Playoff rankings reveal.

As expected, Alabama football won its annual “FCS Week” game against Mercer — though it did come against a Bears team that is ranked No. 9 in the latest FCS Coaches Poll.

Moreover, two teams ranked ahead of the Crimson Tide in last week’s CFP rankings lost over the weekend. The BYU Cougars fell 17-13 in an upset loss to the Kansas Jayhawks, and the Tennessee Volunteers lost 31-17 to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Alabama (8-2) stands to benefit from those teams’ losses in both the actual CFP rankings as well as in terms of seeding. Last week, the selection committee’s seeding would have had the Crimson Tide taking on the Indiana Hoosiers in a first-round game in Bloomington.

Alabama rolls in dominant 52-7 win over Mercer to set up final stretch run

The Alabama Crimson Tide finished strong in the second half of a 52-7 victory over the Mercer Bears Saturday. Here’s how it happened.

The No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide finished strong in a 52-7 win over the Mercer Bears Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama improved to 8-2 overall before its final two games of the regular season. Kalen DeBoer’s team heads to Norman next Saturday to face the Oklahoma Sooners before closing out the year with their Iron Bowl matchup against the Auburn Tigers in Tuscaloosa.

After jumping out to a 31-7 lead at halftime — a start in which the Tide got two big touchdowns from freshman sensation Ryan Williams and an impressive performance from quarterback Jalen Milroe — Alabama kept its foot on the gas to open the second half.

The Crimson Tide started the third quarter strong by driving 67 yards in 4:27 to take a 38-7 lead. Milroe hit Germie Bernard on a play that went for 23 yards to the Mercer 21-yard line, and Justice Haynes ran 12 yards for a first and goal at the Bears’ 3. Milroe eventually finished off a 10-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

That would mark the end of Milroe’s day. He finished 11-of-16 for 186 yards and three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). Milroe ran six times for 43 yards before backup Ty Simpson took over.

Simpson showed off his wheels on his first series with a 13-yard scramble on a 3rd and 11 play from Alabama’s 27-yard line.

Early in the fourth quarter, Simpson pulled off a pass reminiscent of Eli Manning’s Super Bowl escape against the New England Patriots in 2008 when he avoided a sack and hit tight end Josh Cuevas for a 43-yard gain and a first and goal at the 1.

Richard Young finished off the drive with his first career touchdown run for a 45-7 lead with 12:54 to play in the game. Simpson was 5-of-10 for 71 yards, plus the 13-yard scramble.

Alabama used two more backup quarterbacks, giving freshmen Dylan Lonergan and Washington transfer Austin Mack some snaps. Lonergan was 5-of-6 for 23 yards. He hit Ty Lockwood on a well-thrown short pass for a five-yard gain and a first down.

Mack, the fourth quarterback of the day, connected with fellow freshman Rico Scott for a 31-yard touchdown with 3:36 left for Alabama’s final score of the afternoon. Mack’s touchdown to Scott capped a 16-play, 79-yard drive that took 7:43 off the clock.

Alabama finished the day with an 508 yards of total offense (319 passing, 189 rushing) and 29 first downs.

Alabama-Purdue basketball game marks rare appearance for Crimson Tide on NBC

Alabama takes on Purdue tonight in a marquee Top 25 matchup on Peacock. It’s been a while since the Alabama Crimson Tide appeared on an NBC-owned platform. Here’s the last time it happened.

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide are in West Lafayette to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in a marquee nonconference matchup at Mackey Arena featuring two Top 25 teams.

Alabama (3-0) is ranked No. 2 in the both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll. Purdue (3-0) is ranked No. 12 in the Coaches Poll. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT. The game can be seen exclusively on Peacock, marking the first time the Crimson Tide have ever appeared on the streaming platform.

RELATED: How to watch Alabama vs Purdue today: Time, TV channel for huge nonconference game

Since it’s Alabama’s first time playing exclusively on Peacock, that caused me to think about the last time a Crimson Tide team in a major sport appeared on any NBC-owned property — including the actual flagship NBC network.

The answer? It’s been a while.

In 2019, Oats’ first season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama played the Rhode Island Rams in the third game of the season at Ryan Center in Kingston. Rhode Island won, 93-79. That game was televised on the now defunct NBC Sports Network, or NBCSN. (Hat tip to Griffin Smith on X, formerly Twitter, for pointing this out.)

As for Alabama football? It’s been even longer since the Crimson Tide last appeared on an NBC-owned channel.

In fact, you’d have to go all the way back to New Year’s Day 1991 when Alabama played the Louisville Cardinals, then a football independent, in the Fiesta Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The game was nationally televised on NBC.

In one of the ugliest bowl game performances in Alabama football history, Louisville got out to a stunning 25-0 lead in a first quarter that took nearly one full hour from start to finish.

The Cardinals, led by former Bear Bryant player and assistant coach Howard Schnellenberger, won 34-7. The late Charlie Jones called the game for NBC alongside former BYU Cougars and Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders tight end Todd Christensen.

Louisville quarterback Browning Nagle was the game’s MVP. Nagle threw for a Fiesta Bowl record 451 yards against Alabama.

Off the field, the game was mired in a cloud of controversy over a decision by Arizona voters to reject a proposal that would have made Martin Luther King Jr. Day a paid holiday for state workers. According to a Jan. 2, 1991, story from the New York Times, Fiesta Bowl officials considered moving the game to San Diego.

Separately, both Notre Dame and Virginia had refused to play in the Fiesta Bowl over the voters’ decision.

Alabama fans of a certain age will also recall that NBC angered many in its audience by cutting away from the Fiesta Bowl to head to Miami for that night’s Orange Bowl clash between No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 1 Colorado. The Buffaloes beat the Irish, 10-9, for a share of the national championship with Georgia Tech.

The issue was, NBC cut away from the Fiesta Bowl with over six minutes still left in the game — and well before the Orange Bowl had kicked off. After doing so, Alabama defensive back and fan favorite Mark McMillion was injured on a play late in the game that many feared to be serious. (McMillion would play in all 12 games the following year in 1991 and have an eight-year career in the NFL.)

As for basketball games, those have primarily been broadcast on CBS, ABC/ESPN and, to a smaller degree, on Fox. Major college games haven’t been regularly broadcast on the national NBC network since it lost the rights to the NCAA Tournament to CBS in the 80s. Peacock began airing Big Ten football and basketball games in 2023.

To say the least, Alabama’s appearance on an NBC-owned platform — either broadcast or streaming — is a rarity these days.

USA TODAY Sports expert sees Alabama football going all the way to CFP title game

This USA TODAY Sports college football expert sees Alabama making a DEEP run in the College Football Playoff.

What a difference a week can make. That’s especially true for the Alabama Crimson Tide, who came into Week 11 a borderline College Football Playoff team in most experts’ postseason projections.

But after soundly beating the LSU Tigers 42-13, Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide have gone from being a mere Playoff contender to a much deeper projection in one expert’s prediction.

That’s according to the latest College Football Playoff projections from USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith, who updated his weekly postseason picks Tuesday. Smith now sees Alabama not only making the Playoff, but going all the way to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Here’s how Smith sees it happening. He projects Alabama, as a No. 7 seed, to beat the No. 10 Indiana Hoosiers in a first-round game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. From there, he has the Crimson Tide beating projected ACC champion Miami in the Peach Bowl, then taking down the Ole Miss Rebels in the semifinals at the Orange Bowl.

Doing that would put Alabama in the title game against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Atlanta on Jan. 20, 2025, Smith predicts.

Smith’s four projected conference champions are the Oregon Ducks, Texas Longhorns, BYU Cougars and Miami Hurricanes.

Could the SEC get five teams into the College Football Playoff?

That’s a projection USA TODAY Sports’ Blake Toppmeyer is ready to make after a wild Saturday of games that included Ole Miss’ 18-point win over the Georgia Bulldogs in Oxford. In Toppmeyer’s weekly Playoff projections, he sees Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia, Texas and the Tennessee Volunteers all making the 12-team field.

Although the math in getting to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game is tricky, Toppmeyer sees the Crimson Tide as his SEC champion and the No. 2 overall seed in the Playoff behind Oregon.

Toppmeyer said of Alabama:

“As an SEC standings logjam forms, complex tiebreaker protocols might be needed to determine one or both teams for the conference championship game. So, I can’t say with certainty Alabama will reach Atlanta. Strapped with two conference losses, the Crimson Tide require help to get there. If they they get there, I like their chances of retaining the SEC’s crown. Quarterback Jalen Milroe regained his juice, and Alabama showed no signs of its October woes, while demolishing LSU.”

Toppmeyer has Oregon as his No. 1 overall seed with BYU as the No. 3 seed and Miami as the No. 4 seed of the four Power Four champions.

The Power Four champions will receive a first-round bye and advance to the quarterfinal round of the Playoff at neutral sites: the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl.

Alabama was No. 11 in the initial CFP rankings last week. The updated rankings will be unveiled Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Alabama (6-2 overall) was ranked in the same spot in the initial CFP rankings as their current standing in both the Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 11.

With two losses already and at 6-2 overall, Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide cannot avoid another setback. That’s the simple reality. Alabama got some help over the weekend when three teams ranked ahead of them in the polls fell: Clemson, Iowa State and Texas A&M.

To no surprise, the Oregon Ducks took the No. 1 overall spot in the initial CFP rankings. Dan Lanning’s team is 9-0 and have spent the past three weeks atop the Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll.

Ohio State checked in at No. 2, with Georgia at No. 3.

College Football Playoff bracket: Who’s in, who’s out

Alabama schedule: Are the Crimson Tide playing today?

Is Alabama football playing today? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

Will the Alabama Crimson Tide be on the field today in Week 10 of the 2024 college football schedule?

After a 34-0 shutout victory over the Missouri Tigers at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Crimson Tide (6-2 overall, 3-2 SEC) are on a bye week and will return to the field on Nov. 9 when Alabama heads to Baton Rouge for its annual showdown with the LSU Tigers in what will be a playoff elimination game for both teams.

LSU (6-2, 3-1) fell to the Texas A&M Aggies, 38-23, in College Station last week to snap a six-game winning streak. The Tigers also have a bye this week and are ranked No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Alabama is ranked No. 14 in the coaches poll.

Brian Kelly and the Tigers won the last matchup with Alabama in Tiger Stadium when the two teams met in 2022, a 32-31 classic. Jayden Daniels ran for a 25-yard touchdown in overtime and then hit tight end Mason Taylor for a game-winning 2-point conversion. It was LSU’s first win over Alabama in Baton Rouge since 2010.

Last year, Alabama tamed the Tigers 42-28 in Tuscaloosa. Jalen Milroe would certainly take a repeat performance of that game when the two teams play again next week. Milroe rushed for 155 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 219 more against LSU last November.

Kickoff for Alabama-LSU was announced earlier this week. The Tide and Tigers will play at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ABC.
