Rookie Paul Reed wraps up first Sixers season, his offseason goals

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Paul Reed wraps up his season while also looking to add to his game this offseason.

As the Philadelphia 76ers head into the offseason after a tough and disappointing playoff finish losing Game 7 at home in Round 2, there are some good things that they care hoping to build on for the future.

One is the promising play of rookie forward Paul Reed. After spending time in the G League bubble with the Delaware Blue Coats, where he ended up winning league MVP, the young forward was able to experience a playoff atmosphere with the Sixers and see what it takes to win in this league.

While Philadelphia was not able to achieve its goals, the experience for Reed was big for him and his development.

“Extremely productive,” said Reed after the season ended. “I put a lot of work in. I put a lot of hours in, just working on myself so it was extremely, extremely productive, and once I got out the G League, it’s the same type of way. I always work the same way working, and it’s easy because I have more help, more coaches to help me work, work on my game, and getting better.”

Reed is able to be around successful NBA people such as coach Doc Rivers as well as Joel Embiid who has taken Reed under his wing a bit.

[exco_embed id=”d8b9c085-4226-44f1-8495-36ad4e2aa62d”]

“Coach Rivers and Jo, Jo taught me a lot of things this year,” Reed continued. “He taught me a lot. He taught me how to how to get fouls, how to draw fouls, and how to keep your confidence up at all times.”

Reed did average 3.4 points and 2.3 rebounds on 53.8% shooting in 26 games with the Sixers. He mostly played in mop-up duty when the game was already decided, but there were some games when he was able to get some actual playing time.

During those rare moments, he was able to show off some skill, but he feels like there are plenty of things he can add to his overall game.

“I was talking to one of my coaches about this, but what I really want to focus on a lot is my passing ability, my shooting ability, just being more consistent,” he explained. “Getting stronger, being able to finish around the rim against bigger players, moving guys out the way, with all these muscles I’m gonna have. I want to get better and then my explosiveness too like getting more bouncy, more athletic.”

Stephen A. Smith: Warriors to make a push for Sixers star Ben Simmons

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes the Golden State Warriors will make a push for Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the process of trying to figure out what the right move is following another disappointing playoff finish when they fell in Game 7 at home to the Atlanta Hawks in Round 2. They have a lot of ways they can go about improving the roster, but the most popular one is through trade.

One of the big topics of discussion to begin the offseason for Philadelphia has been moving Ben Simmons. The 3-time All-Star is bearing the brunt of the criticism following another uninspiring performance where he only took four shots and scored five points in the Game 7 loss.

Considering this is not the first time this has happened, some believe it is time to move on from the talented, but maddening, young star.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes that the Golden State Warriors are a possible suitor for Simmons:

In the end, Philadelphia is trying to claim that Philadelphia is not interested in moving Ben Simmons. Let me tell y’all something that’s a damn lie. That’s a damn lie. Okay, it’s just that they’re not interested in getting trash back for him. You make a solid, bona fide offer, the Philadelphia 76ers are going to consider it. I believe the Golden State Warriors are going to make a push for Ben Simmons. Okay, so keep your ears tuned, stay tuned. Ben Simmons, it’s possible, Ben Simmons can end up in Golden State with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. I’m not saying it’s going to happen. Alright, but calls have already been made, things are percolating, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all, if something like that ended up going down. This notion that Ben Simmons, ain’t no way Philadelphia is moving him? Hell yeah. They’ll move him, if it’s the right offer. They won’t move up for garbage, they won’t move him for something that’s not a good offer, but I’m telling you, I know a lot of people in Philly, as y’all both know, but let them get the right offer? Ben’s gone.

It would be hard for the Warriors to come up with a fair offer without having to give up one of the aforementioned stars that they possess for Simmons. As Smith mentioned, Philadelphia won’t trade Simmons just to trade him. They have to get real value back in return for a guy who at just 24-years old, has accomplished a lot in this league.

Sixers 2021 NBA mock draft: Jared Butler would add help to bench unit

In the latest mock draft, the Philadelphia 76ers are selecting Baylor guard Jared Butler.

With the Philadelphia 76ers falling in Game 7 to the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, the team’s attention turns to the offseason and improving the team. President Daryl Morey will have a few things to address as he looks to improve the roster.

One of the paths he can take is the draft. The Sixers have the 28th pick in the 2021 NBA draft in July. They unearthed a gem in the 2020 draft when they selected Tyrese Maxey with the 21st overall pick, so now they hope to grab another rotation player with this pick.

The Sixers need help on the bench unit. Maxey has shown he has potential, but he is not yet a good shooter, and he has work to do to really develop. They could always use another playmaker and a guy who can also shoot the ball.

One option, per a mock draft performed by CBS Sports, is Baylor guard Jared Butler. Despite being medically flagged, he has solid draft stock:

Jared Butler was referred to a fitness to play panel at the combine after undergoing medical exams in Chicago, so his stock is in limbo as we wait to learn more. If he’s cleared, he’s a clear first-round talent, though. Butler was the Final Four MOP for title-winning Baylor whose court vision, creation skills and above-average 3-point shooting makes him uniquely positioned to contribute to a Philly team in dire need of everything he can bring to the table.

Butler shot 41.6% from deep in his junior season with the Bears and he averaged 16.7 points and 4.8 assists. The Sixers were unable to find consistent play from their bench. While a rookie probably will not solve all of their problems, a guy like Butler would help.

Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil reflects on season after Sixers’ Game 7 loss

Philadelphia 76ers CEO Scott O’Neil reflects on the season after the team lost Game 7 to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to move on following a tough Game 7 loss at home to the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the playoffs. It was a disappointing end to a season in which winning a championship was the stated goal all season.

The Sixers continue to be led by a pair of stars, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, and the two are still growing. That does not change the fact they should have gotten the job done this season. This was as good a chance as any to get the job done.

Team CEO Scott O’Neil sat down with Howard Beck on his podcast, “The Crossover NBA Show,” a day after the season ended and reflected upon the Sixers and how far they have come since 2013:

Upon reflection, which is the best I can do right now, I think about what I walked into eight years ago we were practicing at PCOM which is a Medical College, and this was probably the worst in the history. Our workout room was the size of my bathroom and I remember I walked in there my first day, and the only thing that was going through my head as I was trying to mask it was, this is not a world class organization, it’s just not. So if you go back to eight years ago and you fast forward, we have a world class training center, we have two global iconic superstars. Doc Rivers, who through this pandemic, has proven to be an extraordinary leader on the court as he’s off. Daryl Morey joins Elton Brand, we’re like we’re solid, and I gotta tell you, I love where this organization is. I love the people here. This is a family, we work really hard, we have like really, really big eyes, and really big goals and we talk about growth and business and it’s fun, but it’s tough day today, for sure.

The Sixers have the talent to be one of the top teams in the league, but they have issues that need to be fixed. They need to tackle the Simmons issues as well as looking to continue to grow the bench unit in support of the starters. There is a lot for the Sixers to overcome as they head into the offseason.

Brian Scalabrine believes Miami Heat can fix Sixers star Ben Simmons

Brian Scalabrine believes the Miami Heat can fix Philadelphia 76ers star, Ben Simmons.

In the aftermath of the Philadelphia 76ers falling to the Atlanta Hawks in Game 7 at home in their Eastern Conference semifinal series, much of the criticism has targeted All-Star guard Ben Simmons. He came up small in Game 7, taking five points and four shots, and the talk around Simmons has been focused on trading him.

ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins recently suggested the Sixers trade Simmons to the Minnesota Timberwolves for D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley. That would not be the worst move in the world and both players can be good fits around Joel Embiid.

Now, NBC Sports Boston’s Brian Scalabrine is suggesting the Miami Heat should get in on the Simmons sweepstakes:

I’m not just saying this because we do our fair share of talking about culture club. I think the Miami Heat can fix him. I really believe that. I don’t think a lot of organizations can fix him. I think the Miami Heat could fix Ben Simmons. If I’m Pat Riley, he would be my whale, and Erik Spoelstra is not like a traditional coach. He’ll run wacky things for Ben Simmons, by the way, Erik Spoelstra put James Johnson at the point guard and played James Johnson at the point a bunch of possessions. I’m telling you, the Miami he could fix him, and Erik Spoelstra as a coach can fix Ben Simmons.

The issue with this is Simmons and Jimmy Butler have already played together in the past, and it did not exactly turn out great for Simmons and the Sixers. On top of that, there is not a lot that the Heat can offer the Sixers in exchange for a player of Simmons’ caliber, but a guy like Riley could always come up with something to make a deal work.

Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey already back in the gym after season ends

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey already back in the gym to prepare for the 2021-22 season.

On Sunday, Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey wrapped up his rookie season, a campaign in which the young guard showed off his potential to be a regular rotation player. The Sixers seemed to have really found a gem at No. 21 in the 2020 NBA draft.

As Maxey headed into the offseason, he mentioned he was looking to get back in the gym on Friday to prepare for his second season. This comes after a wild first season in the NBA during which he played in 61 games plus the 12 playoff games. That is a lot to handle for a 20-year old rookie trying to adjust to NBA life.

Despite probably needing a rest, Maxey was back in the gym on Friday as he promised. He posted on his Instagram story that he was in the team’s facility early in the morning.

The Sixers had a disappointing ending to the season, but they will have to use it as motivation to move forward. Philadelphia will have to get there as a team and continue to develop the roster moving forward.

Ben Simmons’ high school coach chimes in Sixers star’s struggles

Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons’ high school coach chimes in on his offensive struggles.

Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons continues to be the topic of discussion as the team continues to pick up the pieces following another Round 2 exit from the playoffs. The Sixers fell in Game 7 at home to the Atlanta Hawks and Simmons was very passive in those games.

Simmons only averaged 6.4 shot attempts in the series and it is probably due to the fact that he shot 33.3% from the foul line in the series and he did not want to risk being fouled and having to go to the line. It was clear that Simmons’ confidence was shaken a bit and he did not want to take those shots.

Simmons, who went to high school at Montverde Academy in Florida, played with D’Angelo Russell who explained in the past why he thinks Simmons won’t shoot at the NBA level. Now, their coach, Kevin Boyle is chiming in in the conversation.

Boyle sat down with John Clark on the “Takeoff with John Clark” podcast and he gives his thoughts on why Simmond struggled so much against the Hawks:

I think it’s more a mental thing than physical thing. I know there’s some things that had to be cleaned up there. I thought his shot was pretty good coming out of high school. He had a slight slant to the left, but very slight and when he first got to Philly, I don’t know what really happened, but his form changed to technically not correct. I think trying to maybe straighten him out too much of his arm, ended up opening his arm up and it didn’t look good, and I think he lost confidence. The way that he looked and also the result, you start getting some criticism so you stop doing stuff that people are going to criticize and you get self conscious about it. I think again, I think more than anything, it’s a confidence thing. I’ve seen him many times go 12-for-15 from the foul line 11-for-16, 10-for-14, that was regular in high school, those type of numbers, and now you’re struggling to go 3-for-10.

Boyle did add that if the Sixers can put some type of shot quota on him and force him to take jumpers in games and be aggressive, that can be helpful for him as well. Something to where if the Sixers can get to him and have him be aggressive in games, that is something that could be beneficial for the long run:

If you’re aggressive offensively, without question, you’re capable of getting 22 a game 23 a game. If you’re playing downhill and aggressive, and I almost think he needs a shot quota that he has to be put on and he has to have some type of accountability, or substitution thing if you’re not doing that, almost like a reverse psychology. We don’t care about the result, we care about that you’re shooting, and you’re going to the foul line, we want 10 foul shots a game, we want X field goals a game. That type of psychology that it will straighten itself out with work in the gym with some corrections. Right now, he’s swinging the ball from his waist to the top of his head, instead of really taking it under his chin in the shooting pocket, creating a harder shot. So there’s some technical things, but more than anything, I think it’s a mental thing right now and confidence thing that’s not always easy to fix, but definitely can be fixed.

Another thing to think about is the mental side of the business. in today’s sports world, social media a huge thing, and when a player fails, he hears about it from everywhere. Boyle did add this:

Obviously when you’re famous, you’re going to get publicity that’s not favorable in those situations so when you’re young, it’s hard to handle that when you haven’t had a lot of negative publicity in your career, mostly well positive publicity.

This will be an important summer for Simmons and the Sixers to continue to work on his game. This might be a bit of a make-or-break summer for him as far as his future in Philadelphia.

Scottie Pippen says Sixers’ Doc Rivers set Ben Simmons up for failure

NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen blames coach Doc Rivers for Ben Simmons’ failures.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been ousted from the NBA Playoffs after falling in Game 7 to the Atlanta Hawks at home on Sunday. Since then, there has naturally been a lot of finger-pointing and a lot of discussions on who to blame after their season ended prematurely.

The person who has bared the brunt of the criticism has been All-Star guard Ben Simmons. The 24-year old point guard only had five points on four shots in the Game 7 loss and he has continued to come up small in big moments for Philadelphia.

On top of that, Simmons only shot 34.2% from the foul line throughout the postseason as coach Doc Rivers hesitated to take him off the floor due to his ability to highly impact the game. According to a Hall of Famer, that was a mistake.

Scottie Pippen sat down with GQ Magazine and he was asked about Simmons and he had this to say about Philadelphia’s failures:

I watched a lot of games that Doc [Rivers] shouldn’t have had him in, in the fourth quarter. If I give you a deck of cards and I give you a deuce of heart and a deuce of diamond, and we playing Spades, why you keep grabbing those cards when you know you’re gonna lose in that category? This kid been this way the whole time and Doc brought him in and set him up for failure. He been like this! And you guys know he been like this. And Doc kept putting him in the game, he kept letting that team do fouls on him. Take him out the game! The Lakers did it with Shaq, and he’s bigger and more dominant and probably more fearless than Ben Simmons. Doc made him be a failure.

With that being said, Pippen also acknowledged how good of a player Simmons is. He is 24-years old and he has made an All-Star game three times while also being named to the All-Defensive First Team twice. He is that good of a player.

Pippen added:

He’s still a good basketball player. That’s his weakness: shooting the basketball. If you take that away from Ben Simmons, he got no weakness. That’s Giannis’ weakness, too. But, Giannis don’t mind being humiliated. That’s the difference between him and Ben Simmons. Giannis will go to the free throw line and shoot two fucking airballs and come right down the court the next time and try and dunk on you. If Ben Simmons miss a free throw, he gonna start passing it before he get to the free throw line on the other end. He didn’t even wanna cross half court with the basketball because he was so afraid of being humiliated going to that foul line. That’s why he didn’t try to make that dunk at the end of the game. He’s been doing it all year, bro.

Rivers expressed his belief in Simmons after the season ended and he has a plan to help him improve. Philadelphia won’t trade Simmons just to do it due to his immense talent. The right package has to come along for president Daryl Morey to really consider moving on from him.

Sixers forward Tobias Harris issues words to Philadelphia after Game 7

Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris has some words for the city after the Game 7 loss at home.

The Philadelphia 76ers are still reeling from their disappointing Game 7 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. It came as s surprise to everybody when they were not able to get the job done as the No. 1 seed in the East.

Tobias Harris, who had a solid, but not great Game 7, was one of the key cogs all season. Harris had a terrific first Philadelphia season under coach Doc Rivers averaging 19.5 points and he shot 51.2% from the floor and 39.4% from deep. He had an overall fabulous postseason, but Game 5 and Game 7 against the Hawks stick out like a sore thumb a bit for him.

As the team now heads into the offseason, Harris has some words for the city of Philadelphia that he promises to continue to work on his game and help bring a championship to the City of Brotherly Love.

Harris had a terrific season under Rivers, but it was not enough for them. Now, he and the Sixers must realize that improvements must be made as they head for an interesting summer.

Sixers star Joel Embiid to switch agencies ahead of a big summer

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is leaving the CAA sports agency ahead of a big summer for him.

The Philadelphia 76ers are moving on after a tough ending to their season after falling in Game 7 at home to the Atlanta Hawks in Round 2 of the playoffs. They do have some housecleaning things to take care of, including taking care of their star big man.

Joel Embiid is coming off a terrific season where he averaged 28.5 points and 10.6 rebounds while finishing as a runner-up to Nikola Jokic in the MVP award. Embiid constantly was putting the Sixers on his back to ensure that they earned the No. 1 seed in the East and he is now in line to earn a supermax contract extension this summer.

As he heads into the negotiations, Embiid is leaving the CAA sports agency that was representing him. Per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Embiid was represented by Leon Rose who left for the New York Knicks, but he was then represented by Michael Tellem. Now, he wants a new agency as Pompey reports:

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Embiid had been represented at the agency by former super agent Leon Rose before Rose became the New York Knicks’ president of basketball operations on March 2, 2020. Rose and Embiid had a great agent/client relationship.

After Rose left, Embiid remained with CAA, where he was represented by Michael Tellem. Now he’s interested in building the right marketing team.

The Sixers will be probably be working quickly to get the big fella the contract he deserves as they head into the 2021-22 season. This offseason is going to be very interesting for the Sixers as they look to continue down their path for a title.
