What the Bears could get in trade of No. 1 pick or Justin Fields

The Bears could land an even bigger haul for the No. 1 pick this year, according to ESPN.

The Chicago Bears have an important decision to make at quarterback this offseason, one that could define the franchise’s future for the next decade — stick with Justin Fields or start over with a top rookie talent.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Courtney Cronin did a deep dive into the two different scenarios facing the Bears this offseason, which included talking to league executives about both choices.

If the Bears trade the first overall pick they could get a significant haul — greater than last year’s trade for the top selection, which included wide receiver DJ Moore, two first-round picks (which became Darnell Wright and this year’s No. 1 pick) and two second rounders (which became Tyrique Stevenson and a 2025 second-rounder).

If the Bears traded the first pick, the return could be immense. Several executives agree Chicago could net more than it did in the Panthers trade, and from a prospective trade partner already picking in the top five. Those execs believe the price to get to No. 1 could be two future first-rounders on top of this year’s pick, along with a variation of a Day 2 pick and/or a premium veteran player on a manageable contract.

If the Bears trade Fields, they could get a draft pick as high as a second rounder, which takes into account recent quarterback trades.

The consensus in an informal poll of league evaluators is that Fields would be worth a second- or third-round pick in a pre-draft trade. When compared to former top-10 picks recently traded, that’s better than Trey Lance, whom Dallas acquired from San Francisco for a fourth-round pick, but slightly worse than Sam Darnold, who, along with a sixth-round pick, went from the Jets to Carolina in exchange for second- and fourth-rounders.

If the Bears decide to trade Fields, an anonymous AFC executive believes the Atlanta Falcons would be a good fit for Fields, and they’re certainly in the market for a quarterback.

Poles, who’s expected to be retained, ultimately has to decide whether Fields or a top rookie like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye can lead the Bears to a championship. But there are other contributing factors at work, including locker room chemistry.

Bears veterans have made it clear they want Fields back in 2024. If Poles were to trade Fields, like he has other veterans like Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn, it could be detrimental to locker room morale.

Then there’s the fact that Poles could acquire significant draft capital in another trade of the top selection (as mentioned above) to continue building a team that has made huge strides in the final stretch of this season, including Fields.

Bears players make it clear they want Justin Fields back in 2024

Justin Fields’ teammates continue to rally around him as the Bears gear up for an important offseason decision.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields faces an uncertain future heading into the final week of his third season.

With Chicago securing the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft — thanks to the Panthers — general manager Ryan Poles has an important decision to make at quarterback this offseason. Stick with Fields or start over with his chosen rookie.

But Bears players once again made it clear they want Fields to be the quarterback moving forward. That includes wide receiver DJ Moore, who’s had a career year with Fields as his QB. And Moore wants to make sure Fields stays with him.

“I’ve said it before I’m going to keep saying it: What makes him not the quarterback?” Moore said. “The Houdini act should’ve put the nail in the– he’s not a running back. He is him… I want him to be the quarterback.”

Defensive end Montez Sweat praised Fields for his rare playmaking ability, something he doesn’t always get credit for.

“He makes plays like Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes but guys don’t really hype it up like they would other quarterbacks bro,” Sweat said. “But he’s one of none. I’m happy he’s on my side.”

Fields shined in what could’ve been his final home game with the Bears, where he accounted for 313 total yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He made the kind of plays that no other quarterback in the NFL can make.

The Soldier Field crowd showered Fields with praise in the form of “We want Fields!” chants, where they made it clear they want him back in 2024. And rest assured Fields and his teammates heard them.

“Of course I heard them,” safety Jaquan Brisker said. “I want Justin. We all want Justin. Let’s go!”

“I did hear those chants,” Moore said. “And I know (the front office’s) box is right there. So I know they heard that stuff, too.”

There’s no doubt Fields has got his teammates’ support, along with the fans. But the decision ultimately comes down to whether Poles believes Fields can lead this team to a championship.

Buckle up, Bears fans, it’s going to be an eventful offseason.

Updated 2024 NFL draft order after Week 17

Here’s a look at the updated 2024 NFL draft order following Week 17 action:

Week 17 of the 2023 NFL season is in the books, which featured another thrilling slate of action. There’s just one week left in the regular season, and the top of the draft order is starting to finalize.

Fans of the Bears, Commanders and Patriots should be excited as their teams look to lock down a top-three selection. Meanwhile, fans of the Panthers aren’t sitting pretty as they’ve already dealt their 2024 first-round selection to the Bears, which is officially the top selection in the draft.

Here’s an updated look at the 2024 NFL draft order following Week 17 action, courtesy of the folks at Tankathon:

Bears secure No. 1 overall pick in NFL draft for second straight year

The Bears once again control the NFL draft after securing the No. 1 pick (thanks to the Panthers) for the second consecutive year.

The Chicago Bears received a late Christmas gift from the Carolina Panthers in the form of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Panthers suffered their 14th loss of the season, this one a 26-0 drubbing by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and will officially finish as the worst team in the NFL.

Which is great news for Chicago, who traded their first overall pick in last year’s NFL draft to Carolina in exchange for wide receiver DJ Moore (who has been a stud) and the Panthers’ first-round selection in 2024.

General manager Ryan Poles now has an important decision to make this offseason at quarterback. He can opt to stick with Fields at quarterback and trade the No. 1 selection for a haul or draft a quarterback, like Caleb Williams.

Fields has made the decision a difficult one, especially as he balled out in the Bears’ home finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

Chicago holds the first overall selection for just the fourth time in the franchise’s 103-year existence — and for the second consecutive year. They previously drafted Tom Harmon (1941) and Bob Fenimore (1947) and trade the No. 1 pick to the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

Bears can clinch the No. 1 pick in 2024 NFL draft in Week 17

The Bears can lock up the first overall pick in the NFL draft with a Panthers loss in Week 17.

The Chicago Bears are likely going to be eliminated from playoff contention this week — regardless if they beat the Atlanta Falcons or not. But they could very well lock up the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft this weekend.

The Bears are just one Carolina Panthers loss away from securing the No. 1 selection for the second straight year — and from general manager Ryan Poles having to make an important decision what to do at quarterback.

If Chicago lands the top selection, Poles will have a hard time passing on potential “generational talent” Caleb Williams. But Justin Fields has made the decision a difficult one for Poles, as Fields has shown improvement and garnered a ton of support from teammates.

The Panthers will face the Jacksonville Jaguars, who will be without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That means the fate of the No. 1 pick (at least for this week) rests on the arm of C.J. Beathard, who will get the start of Jacksonville.

If not, the Bears’ chances at the top selection will come down to Week 18. Again.

Report: Matt Eberflus expected to return as Bears head coach in 2024

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero expect the Bears to keep Matt Eberflus as head coach for the 2024 season.

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus’ seat might be cooling off as the end of the season draws closer. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Bears are expected to retain Eberflus for next season as the team’s head coach with a strong finish over the final two games.

In the report, Rapoport said he “would be surprised as of right now if Eberflus was not back” for the Bears. Rapoport also said he has heard “nothing but positive vibes from Chicago” regarding the coach.

Eberflus was hired in 2022 as general manager Ryan Poles’ first move of his tenure. He slogged through a 3–14 season, and after a disastrous start to his second year, calls for his job became loud and frequent. But to Eberflus’ credit, he’s helped level the ship and get the team on track by playing better football. The Bears are 4-2 in their last six games and are looking to finish the year on a high note.

With two games to go in the season, Eberflus’ future will become crystal clear. But it looks like he’s on track for at least one more season as head coach.

5 possible replacements for Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael

A new offensive coordinator is the most realistic change for the Saints in 2024. Here are some possibilities from Ken Dorsey and Eric Bieniemy to Jon Gruden:

Big changes are needed for the New Orleans Saints, but they appear to be willing to wait until 2025 when it’s easier to get out of Derek Carr’s contract and move on from him and head coach Dennis Allen as a package deal — obviously hoping both of them figure things out and finally achieve a winning season instead.

So the most realistic big change fans could expect for 2024 would be a new offensive coordinator. Pete Carmichael Jr. hasn’t gotten the job done in either of his two years as the Saints’ play caller. It’s possible that Allen could promote from within (passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry is an obvious possibility) but the Saints badly need fresh perspective in the room. They can’t keep trying to run Sean Payton and Drew Brees’ offense without either of them.

The problem is that Allen has tried and failed to replace Carmichael in each of his first two years on the job; up-and-comers like Liam Coen would rather stay in the college ranks than try and advance their career on his staff, while coaching veterans like Jay Gruden, Scottie Montgomery, and Robert Prince are trying their hand elsewhere. If Allen is going to get a new coordinator, it’ll be someone who is either desperate for the opportunity, highly-paid to sweeten the deal, or both.

So who fits that description? Here are five names we’re watching closely.

9 potential replacements for Saints head coach Dennis Allen

The Saints may not be preparing to fire Dennis Allen, but they should be. Better head coach candidates are out there like Jim Harbaugh, Ben Johnson, and Brian Flores:

Will the New Orleans Saints move on from Dennis Allen after this season? They probably should. He hasn’t met the expectations set for him in either of his first two years as their head coach, and he’ll need to to beat two NFC South rivals that defeated him soundly earlier this season just to finish the 2023 campaign with a winning record.

The Saints went all in on his vision for the team by signing his preferred quarterback Derek Carr to a lucrative contract and repeatedly trading up in the NFL draft for prospects he wanted the most, costing them much-needed picks that could have been used to restock an aging roster. And Allen hasn’t had anything to show for it. It’s time to move on from the coach with the 184th-ranked career winning percentage in NFL history whether the Saints’ brass wants to admit it or not.

So who are their options if they do dismiss Allen from his post? Years of poaching have thinned out the crowd of candidates ahead of the latest coaching carousel, but there are some intriguing names on the market. Here are five coaches we’d like to see wearing black and gold:

DJ Moore states his case for Bears to stick with Justin Fields at QB

DJ Moore continues to go to bat for Justin Fields.

Bears wide receiver DJ Moore continues to go to bat for his quarterback, Justin Fields, as the 2023 season winds down and an important offseason approaches.

With Chicago just one Panthers loss away from landing the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft for a second straight year, Fields’ future is uncertain beyond 2023. Bears general manager Ryan Poles has an important decision to make about whether to draft a rookie like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye with the top spot or stick with Fields.

It’s been — and will continue to be — a hot topic of conversation throughout the offseason and leading up to the NFL draft. Moore has even been asked about Fields’ future in Chicago a few times now. And he’s made his stance very clear: Fields should be the team’s quarterback in 2024.

“I really don’t see why anything would change,” Moore said Tuesday on the Mully & Haugh Show. “Most people love Justin here (in the city of Chicago). I mean, most people as in like most of the fans love Justin.

“Look at what he’s done – he’s grown every year. He had (two) different offensive coordinators … He’s grown more and more each year. Even throughout this year, you can see his growth.”

Moore was asked about Fields’ accuracy and explained how it can be improved — with more time.

“You can improve it,” Moore said. “It comes with working on timing and being with the same group of guys throughout the course of the season or the years that you are together. Because once you improve the timing, everybody knows where the one-two-three reads are going to be, and he can expect them to be exactly at that depth at the right time.”

Fields has completed 60.9% of his passes for 2,146 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions (two that were on Hail Mary throws) in 11 games this season.

While Fields has shown improvement this season, that might not be enough to retain him in Chicago — if Poles deems Williams or another rookie the best option for the Bears moving forward.

Get ready for a must-see offseason.

Where the Bears are projected to pick in 2024 NFL draft after Week 16

Here’s where the Bears are slated to pick with both first round selections in the 2024 NFL draft after Week 16 action.

The Chicago Bears secured a win over the Arizona Cardinals on Christmas Eve, where they doubled their win total from a season ago.

So how did Chicago’s recent win impact their draft positioning heading into the final two weeks?

Following Sunday’s action, the Bears currently hold two of the top eight picks in the 2024 NFL draft, according to Tankathon.

The Carolina Panthers’ first-round pick, which belongs to Chicago, remains No. 1 overall after the team lost their 13th game of the season (courtesy of the rival Green Bay Packers). Meanwhile, the Bears’ selection is now eighth overall after they won their sixth game of the season and subsequent results this weekend.

  1. Bears (via Panthers, 2-13)
  2. Cardinals (3-12)
  3. Commanders (4-11)
  4. Patriots (4-11)
  5. Giants (5-10)
  6. Chargers (5-10)
  7. Titans (5-10)
  8. Bears (6-9)

There are plenty of questions surrounding the Bears with the final two games on deck, including the future of quarterback Justin Fields. If Chicago manages to snag the top selection in the draft, general manager Ryan Poles will need to determine whether any quarterback in the 2024 class blows him away or if the Bears will stick with Fields, who’s entering the final year of his rookie deal (and the fifth-year option is still in play). Trading back from a top draft spot isn’t out of the question either.

The Bears are just one Panthers loss away from securing the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft for the second consecutive season. Carolina faces the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team contending for a playoff spot, on New Year’s Eve.
