U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Zach Johnson announces his team will make early trip to Italy

“I think it helps. I think that trip right there is going to be crucial.”

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The U.S. Ryder Cup team is going to Italy — at least twice.

It’s still months away until the U.S. Ryder Cup team is finalized, but U.S. Captain Zach Johnson announced on Wednesday that the team will make a three-day trip to Rome ahead of the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club in September.

“I made it a priority and I’m very grateful that the powers that be at the PGA of America have granted me that liberty, in the sense that I’m taking the 12 guys that make my team to Rome two weeks prior to the event — two and a half weeks prior to the event, so that way we get our feet on the grounds, they get their feet on the grounds, experience Marco Simone firsthand,” Johnson said during a pre-tournament press conference ahead of the 105th PGA Championship at Oak Hill. “Then when we leave and come back home for two weeks, they’ll have at least, I think, a pretty realistic expectation as to what is required.”

In 2021, the U.S. team made a similar reconnaissance trip, which also helped build team morale, ahead of the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. The U.S. side went on to rout Team Europe 19-9 and take possession of the Cup. But it hasn’t won on foreign soil in 30 years.

“I think it helps. I think that trip right there is going to be crucial,” Johnson said. “That’s a strong word, but I think just key for a number of reasons. Certainly chemistry and camaraderie and all that good stuff inside the locker room. But more than that, we all know Monday through Thursday is pretty trying. There’s a lot that goes on. And if we have any weather issues or just things get really congested and difficult and tight, they’ve already experienced it, so they don’t have to push themselves immensely.”

In 2006, U.S. Captain Tom Lehman organized a trip to the K Club in Ireland, ahead of the biennial match which the Americans lost 18½ -9½, so previewing the course ahead of time has had mixed results. Jim Furyk, who was at the helm for the U.S.’s most recent away defeat in Paris in 2018 and will serve as a vice captain to Johnson this go-round, conceded that his team didn’t have sufficient time to prepare for the tight fairways and heavy rough at Le Golf National.

In the past, it has been considered a challenge to get team members to schedule a get-together at the same time on relatively short notice, but Johnson expressed confidence that the bulk of the players and caddies, who will represent the stars and stripes will be present on his trip.

“The only thing I can do right now is communicate that,” he said of a team gathering in Italy. “Communicate, one, that it’s a priority to me; two, that it’s a priority to Team USA and the PGA of America; and, three, put it on your radar, put it on your calendar. So I’ve done that.

“I don’t know how far down the list I’ve gone, but I’ve done that to the guys. I have not heard anything that says that no one is in support of that. Granted, Wisconsin is a lot easier to get to, but everybody made it a priority…If you can get the high, high percentage of them there, that’s massive.”

The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 29 to October 1.

Fred Couples will serve as vice captain for the United States at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome

The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.

On Wednesday, United States Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson announced he has brought on Fred Couples as a vice captain.

Couples represented the U.S. in five Ryder Cups, and this will be his third time serving as a vice captain.

“Freddie has the unique ability to relate and get along with every player, no matter their age,” Johnson said in a statement. “In turn, they respect and admire him, which ultimately creates a positive team dynamic. There’s a reason he’s been a vice captain three times. I know Freddie will do everything in his power to help our U.S. Team be successful in Italy.”

Couples was part of the winning staff in the 2021 edition at Whistling Straits.

“Competing as a player in the Ryder Cup and serving as a Vice Captain for the U.S. Team top the list of the most fulfilling weeks of my career,” Couples said in a release. “Zach is an incredible leader, and I look forward to helping him over the next five months and in Italy to bring home a victory.”

The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy.

Jim Furyk named a 2023 Ryder Cup vice captain for U.S. squad

Furyk was named captain of the 2024 U.S. President’s Cup team on May 2.

Jim Furyk can officially block out his calendar for the next two Septembers.

Six days after being tabbed as captain for the U.S. team at the 2024 Presidents Cup, Furyk was named a vice captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Furyk joins Steve Stricker and Davis Love III as vice captains on Zach Johnson’s squad headed to Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy. The PGA of America stated there will be more vice captains for 2023 named at a later date.

The biennial competition between the U.S. and Europe is set for Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.

“Jim and I have been friends for more than 20 years,” Johnson said in a statement released Monday. “He’s an amazing leader, mentor and someone I trust. He understands what it takes to compete at the highest level, and how to be a team player. I will be leaning on his experience a ton in the lead up to Marco Simone in September.”

Furyk was the U.S. team’s Ryder Cup captain in 2018 in France and a vice captain in 2016 at Hazeltine National Golf Club as well as in 2020 at Whistling Straits.

Prior to sliding into leadership roles, Furyk competed in nine straight Ryder Cups: 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014.

“I’ve been involved in the Ryder Cup since 1997, and my passion for this event is unmatched,” Furyk said in the same statement. “Captain Zach Johnson shares that passion, and I can’t wait to get to Italy to help our U.S. Team work toward retaining the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone.”

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald’s brother is caddying on LIV Tour but he says that won’t prevent him from having his bro ‘in some sort of role’ with Team Europe

If Luke Donald has his way, at least one LIV participant will be part of his Ryder Cup inner circle.

AVONDALE, La. – Will there be LIV golfers competing in the Ryder Cup in Italy in September? That’s still to be determined but if European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald has his way at least one LIV participant will be part of his inner circle and involved in a supplementary role.

Donald said he’d like to have brother, Christian, who caddies for Brendan Steele on the LIV Golf League, be part of the support staff when he leads Europe into battle against the Americans in an effort to reclaim the Cup.

Christian Donald once caddied for his brother but has been on the bag for Steele for several years. In February, shortly before the debut of the second season of LIV Golf, Steele, 40, was wooed to the Hy Flyers by his longtime friend and team captain Phil Mickelson.

When Donald was asked how he felt about his brother working for the breakaway Saudi-funded league, he said, “No feelings, really. For someone who is 51 and has two kids under four, it’s a great opportunity for him. He’s going to know his schedule, he’s going to have guaranteed money, he’s going to travel less and be around his family. In terms of that, it’s a bonus. You go where your player goes.”

He continued: “I’ll miss seeing him a little bit more. I’m sure he’ll be at the Ryder Cup, too.”

Asked if his brother would be helping him out in some way, Donald said, “I hope so. We haven’t had a formal discussion but he was my buggy (cart) driver the last two times I served as vice captain. There are different roles as a captain, but yeah, I think he’ll be there in some sort of role.”

Clearly, driving a cart is different than being captain – it’s apples to oranges – but still it seems odd that Christian Donald would be allowed to caddie at LIV and be involved in Team Europe “in some sort of role”. Henrik Stenson was stripped of his captaincy for signing with LIV and Donald was named his replacement. And what does it mean for Donald’s willingness to have LIV’s Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Thomas Pieters on his team? Only time will tell.
