Steelers vs Bills: Ranking the most important players this week

These are the players to watch this week for the Steelers.

Despite being a huge underdog this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers are more than capable of beating the Buffalo Bills. They proved it last season when they went into Buffalo and beat the Bills 23-16 on the opening weekend. But if they are going to pull off the huge upset, like they did this season against the Cincinnati Bengals, here are the most important guys on the team to get that done.

3 Steelers starters miss Wednesday practice

The Steelers secondary is very banged up right now.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers took the field on Wednesday, three of the team’s four starters in the defensive secondary were out. Safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds along with cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon all missed practice with a variety of ailments.

In addition, the team’s other starting cornerback, Cameron Sutton and third cornerback Levi Wallace were both limited. In addition, defensive linemen Cam Heyward and Chris Wormley were both limited.

The Steelers defense cannot afford to lose any more players but things aren’t looking great for this week’s game. Head coach Mike Tomlin has already said Witherspoon will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury but we will be anxious to see what Thursday’s participation report looks like to see how many of these players are back. Tomlin has always said your ability to practice will determine your availability to play.

Steelers WR Steven Sims says he’s returning kicks on Sunday

The Steelers are making a switch in the return game.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, the plan was to solidify the return game. Ray-Ray McCloud was moving on and there was a need. But after multiple fumbles, head coach Mike Tomlin has decided to make a change.

According to wide receiver Steven Sims, he will be handling the return duties on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills instead of Olszewski. Sims looked good in the preseason but has been inactive for all games this season. Sims is from the University of Kansas and has been in the league since 2019. For his career, he has 61 receptions and should have an impact as the team’s fourth wide receiver as well. Activating Sims likely means Olszewski will be inactive on Sunday to make room on the gameday roster.

Steelers vs Bills: Big causes for concern this week

How will Kenny Pickett handle the biggest challenge of his football career?

Over the course of the last three weeks, we have all watched the Pittsburgh Steelers season unravel to a point where they might not be any saving it. This problem is made worse by the four-game stretch facing this team before the bye week. First up are the Buffalo Bills who currently sit at 3-1 and look better than last year. Pittsburgh is 1-3 and has to travel to Buffalo this week as nearly two-touchdown underdogs. Here’s what we are worried about this week.

Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky remains captain despite being benched

Mitch Trubisky will go out for the coin toss despite being benched.

Well, this is awkward.

When Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Tuesday, he announced that rookie Kenny Pickett would be the team’s starting quarterback this week against the Buffalo Bills. This means Mitch Trubisky is now relegated to be the team’s No. 2 quarterback.

However, according to Tomlin, Trubisky remains a team captain and will still go out for the coin toss. I’m not sure if this is the first time a backup quarterback was a team captain but this is certainly an uncomfortable situation for all involved.

I have two questions for Steeler Nation. First, if you were Trubisky would you respectfully decline the opportunity to go out for the coin toss now that you aren’t the starter? And second, if you were the Steelers would you name someone else the captain and take Trubisky out of the equation completely? Let us know in the comments below.
