Steelers elevate huge DT Renell Wren to active roster

Pittsburgh is brining up an extra defensive lineman for this week.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

The Pittsburgh Steelers are calling in reinforcements for this week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. Pittsburgh is calling up massive defensive tackle Renell Wren to the active roster for this week’s game to help slow down the Ravens potent rushing attack.

Wren checks in at 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, giving flashbacks of former Steeler Dan McCullers. Wren is a huge run stuffer and Pittsburgh is going to need all the big bodies they can get to slow down a Ravens run game that racked up more than 200 yards the last time these two teams played.

In other defensive line news, Pittsburgh removed the injury designation for defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi and is a full go for this week. Pittsburgh also has newly-signed Johnathan Marshall who checks in at 310 pounds but has been a healthy scratch since joining the team. Could Marshall get a helmet this week as well?

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin emphasizes start of game as key vs Ravens

The Steelers need to get out to a fast start against the Ravens.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

The Pittsburgh Steelers are notoriously slow starters on offense. The offense hasn’t exactly been on fire at all this season but in many cases, getting behind early is their undoing. This week the Steelers take on the Baltimore Ravens and head coach Mike Tomlin said the start of this week’s game will be key.

This is important because as Tomlin notes, the start of the game doesn’t typically determine the outcome. However, after watching the Ravens just run all over the Steelers three weeks ago, Tomlin understands if this team gets behind, they might not see the football enough to come back.

How do the Steelers get off to a hot start? Personally, I’d love to see the Steelers come out and use tempo the way they did against the Las Vegas Raiders last week on the game-winning drive. Baltimore has switched to mostly zone defense since adding linebacker Roquan Smith and players like tight end Pat Freiermuth and wide receiver Diontae Johnson can exploit that.

Join the conversation and let us know if you think the Steelers can come out fast on Sunday night and force Baltimore to play from behind.

Steelers vs Ravens: 2 starters listed as questionable for Sunday

Pittsburgh is close to healthy this week against the Ravens.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

This week’s game-status report for the Pittsburgh Steelers is a mix of good news and bad news. The good news is safety Terrell Edmunds isn’t listed and is good to go against the Baltimore Ravens.

However, starting linebacker Myles Jack and starting defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi are both listed as questionable. Jack has been trying to get past a groin injury and Ogunjobi has been on the injury report for weeks with a toe injury he continues to play through.

One player who is out for this week’s game is backup safety Tre Norwood. Norwood suffered a hamstring injury in last week’s game and hasn’t practiced all week.

Pittsburgh is looking to avenge a 16-14 loss from earlier in the season when the Ravens just ran all over the Pittsburgh defense. We look for Ogunjobi to continue to play through his injury as he has for more than a month. If Jack is limited, Robert Spillane will continue to see an increased role. Spillane has been the team’s best inside linebacker all season so there will be no dropoff here.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson unlikely to play vs Steelers

It looks like the Steelers will face Tyler Huntley this week.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

On Thursday, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson missed his 11th straight practice. Jackson continues to deal with a PCL strain in his knee and it seems unlikely he will get able to go against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend.

This means it will be Pittsburgh facing Tyler Huntley for the second time in three weeks. Huntley started against the Steelers in Week 14 but was knocked out with an injury. Nevertheless, the Steelers were unable to slow down the Ravens rushing attack and lost to Baltimore 16-14.

In this same game, Steelers starting quarterback Kenny Pickett was knocked out with a concussion and Mitch Trubisky came in and threw three costly interceptions. Huntley and Pickett are both healthy and will finally get to square off.

The Ravens have already locked up a playoff spot so they could hold Jackson until then just to avoid further injury. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh continues to cling to a slim shot at the playoffs and hopes to finish the season on a winning streak.

Steelers make correction to Wednesday practice report

Cameron Sutton did practice on Wednesday.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers put out their practice report noting that starting cornerback Cameron Sutton did not practice and indicated a hamstring injury. This was an error that the team corrected on Thursday morning with an update.

Sutton was removed from the report and did practice on Wednesday and it was actually defensive back Tre Norwood who missed Wednesday’s practice with said hamstring injury.

The Steelers gave a half dozen other players a rest day on Wednesday so Thursday will be the day to watch in terms of who is healthy and who isn’t heading into Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Here is the Steelers Wednesday practice report.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a lengthy practice report with multiple guys designated as DNP on Wednesday. However, the only Steeler who missed practice with an actual injury was cornerback Cameron Sutton. He is dealing with a hamstring injury. The Steelers are preparing for a rematch against the Baltimore Ravens this week.

In addition, wide receiver Diontae Johnson was limited with the toe injury he continues to play through. All the rest of the names on the list were held out just as rest days. Here is the full list.

WR Diontae Johnson (toe)-LP

CB Cameron Sutton (hamstring)-DNP

RB Najee Harris (personal)-DNP

LB Myles Jack (personal)-DNP

S Terrell Edmunds (personal)-DNP

TE Pat Freiermuth (personal)-DNP

DT Cam Heyward (personal)-DNP

Steelers sign S Scott Nelson to practice squad

The Steelers added some depth at safety.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

To help add some depth in the defensive backfield, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed free-agent safety Scott Nelson to the practice squad. This is per NFL writer Eric Edholm.

Pittsburgh is currently dealing with a pair of injuries at safety with Terrell Edmunds and Tre Norwood both dealing with hamstring injuries. Last week Elijah Riley was called up from the practice squad and called into action when Norwood went down early against the Las Vegas Raiders. The addition of Nelson puts another safety back on the practice squad.

Nelson came into the NFL in 2022 as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. Nelson was a highly-productive college safety who could be a sleeper addition at the end of the season.

Steelers S Terrell Edmunds expected to play vs Ravens

Steelers vs Ravens injury update for Tuesday.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the injury status of his players on Tuesday. The team is preparing to get back to work in preparation for a rematch with the Baltimore Ravens.

According to Tomlin, safety Terrell Edmunds is expected to play this week. Edmunds missed last week’s game with a hamstring injury. Tomlin noted his participation would determine availability but he does anticipate Edmunds will return.

Other injuries of note are a hamstring injury for defensive back Tre Norwood, a groin injury for linebacker Myles Jack and linebacker Marcus Allen, who suffered a biceps injury that required surgery. Allen will miss the remainder of the season.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin excited Ravens game was flexed to prime time

Mike Tomlin loves taking on “Harbs” on Sunday Night Football.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media to discuss this week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. The game was initially supposed to be an early kickoff on Sunday but the NFL has flexed the game to Sunday Night Football. This is based on the gravity of the game and the intensity of the rivalry.

Tomlin didn’t mince words when he talked about how excited he was to take on the Ravens and to take them on in prime time. Tomlin noted this is probably the 10th time he has taken on Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh on Sunday night and he called him a “great dance partner.”

“We don’t run from it, we run to it,” Tomlin said, and you could see an uptick in confidence with the way the team has been playing. The Steelers lost to the Ravens just three weeks ago and slowing down the run game was a big issue for the defense. But with the team’s improvement in that area since that game, the Steelers have a good shot to stay on the winning ways
