5 big takeaways from the Steelers win over the Ravens

The Steelers run game is playoff caliber and Kenny Pickett might be the man.

Maybe this Pittsburgh Steelers squad is a team of destiny. Or maybe they are just delaying the inevitable. But either way, Pittsburgh found a way to come back and beat the Baltimore Ravens on the road Sunday night and keep their playoff hopes alive. There is a ton to unpack from this one but here are the big takeaways.

Kenny Pickett comes up clutch again in Steelers win over Ravens

Kenny Pickett gets his second game-winning drive in two weeks.

For the second week in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers have pulled off comeback wins thanks to a game-winning drive by quarterback Kenny Pickett followed by an interception by the Steelers defense to seal the deal. The Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens 16-13 to improve to 8-8 and keep their playoff hopes alive.

This game was all about the run game for the Steelers offense until they needed Pickett on that final drive. Running back Najee Harris had his best game of the season rushing for 111 yards and catching the game-winning touchdown. Jaylen Warren pitched in with 76 rushing yards of his own and 22 receiving yards as well.

Defensively, Pittsburgh did a much better job in containing the Ravens rushing game. After allowing 215 yards the first time around, only gave up 120 yards on Sunday night. The Steelers had a plan and stuck to it. Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley did all he could to win it throwing the football but in the end, the Steelers defense was too much.

Pittsburgh finishes up the regular season at home against the Cleveland Browns and should have a real shot to make the playoffs.

Steelers LB Myles Jack OUT with groin injury

The Steelers will be without Myles Jack for the rest of the game.

Just after halftime, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that inside linebacker Myles Jack is OUT for the remainder of the game with a groin injury. The Steelers currently trail the Baltimore Ravens 10-3 in early in the second half.

This means the Steelers will continue a heavy workload for Robert Spillane and rookie Mark Robinson. The Steelers have fully committed to stopping the run and Spillane and Robinson are easily the team’s most aggressive run defenders on the inside.

This groin injury is nothing new for Jack. He has been dealing with it for several weeks. Early in the game Jack was rotating with Spillane but as the first half went on we saw less and less of Jack. This injury should get Devin Bush on the field more as well.

Cris Collinsworth said baiting Steelers into penalties part of the gameplan

The Ravens got Cam Heyward to make a costly mistake.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

Late in the first half, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty that allowed the Baltimore Ravens to convert a third down as opposed to being forced to kick a field goal. The Ravens turned their good fortune into a touchdown on the next play and they went into halftime leading 10-6.

Even if we put aside the fact that nothing Heyward did warranted a penalty, something Cris Collinsworth said during the television broadcast was more telling. Collinsworth first noted that Heyward had been talking to the officials consistently in the first half with what he assumed were concerns about something the Ravens were doing.

But then after that, he said that for Baltimore this was just part of the gameplan. Knowing which guys they can bait into mistakes and how to do it was what led to Heyward’s mistake.

Let us know in the comments if you think the flag was fair and if you think the Ravens are in Heyward’s head now by design.

Steelers start rookie LB Mark Robinson over Devin Bush

The Steelers shuffled the linebacker lineup in the first half.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made some lineup adjustments this week to account for the power run game of the Baltimore Ravens. The biggest has been starting rookie inside linebacker Mark Robinson over veteran Devin Bush.

At the other inside linebacker spot, Myles Jack and Robert Spillane have alternated reps to help keep fresh legs in there against a huge Ravens offensive front.

In the first meeting between these two teams the Ravens rushed for 215 yards and you can see the Steelers coaches are going above and beyond to force the Ravens to move the football by throwing it.
