Mason Rudolph takes subtle jab at Steelers’ QB depth chart

It doesn’t sound like Mason Rudolph feels like he’s the No. 2 quarterback.

After Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the quarterback situation with Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. This was because starter Kenny Pickett found himself in the concussion protocol again.

Tomlin said he felt Trubisky and Rudolph are No. 2 and No. 2a on the depth chart — a point Rudolph subtly rebutted on Wednesday when asked if he felt like that was the situation.

Rudolph has not been active for a game this season after signing a one-year contract extension that is paying him just north of $4 million this season. Hardly what you expect for a player who isn’t even dressing on game day.

If Pickett cannot go on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, Rudolph will be active for the first time all season. But there is an argument to be made that Rudolph shouldn’t just be active, but should get the start, after a dreadful game by Trubisky last week. Trubisky threw three interceptions after replacing Pickett in the first quarter of the Steelers’ 16-14 loss to the Ravens.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin says Kenny Pickett will play if cleared

Kenny Pickett is currently in the concussion protocol.

Last week, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett suffered his second concussion of the season and finds himself once again in the league’s concussion protocol. Head coach Mike Tomlin spoke to the media on Tuesday and as with the last time this happened, Tomlin noted that if Pickett is cleared this week he will start against the Carolina Panthers.

Meanwhile, Tomlin said he will be sure Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph are splitting reps in case Pickett cannot go. Tomlin wouldn’t speculate on which of the two would start if Pickett isn’t cleared but did say Trubisky and Rudolph are like No. 2 and 2a on the depth chart.

Pittsburgh’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday drops their record to 5-8 and all but ends the season for the Steelers. Nevertheless, Tomlin seems to have no concerns over trotting out the future of the franchise to play meaningless football fresh off of his second concussion in 10 games.

Steelers DL Chris Wormley to have knee surgery, OUT vs Panthers

The Steelers will be without Chris Wormley this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t specify a timeline in his Tuesday press conference but the knee injury defensive tackle Chris Wormley suffered Sunday will require surgery and he is out this week.

Losing Wormley weakens an already very weak unit. The Steelers defensive front got pushed around last week against the Baltimore Ravens and without Wormley it just makes a big problem even bigger.

For the season, Wormley has appeared in 13 games with one start. Statistically, Wormley is way off from the seven sacks he had last season but he has remained a key rotational player along the defensive line.

With Wormley out, look for Isaiahh Loudermilk to be active again this week as well as a heavier workload for guys like DeMarvin Leal and Montravius Adams.

Steelers QB Mason Rudolph says he gets 1 rep per practice

Mason Rudolph says he’s ready to go this week.

In a rather unusual move on Monday, Pittsburgh Steelers third-string quarterback Mason Rudolph spoke to the media in the locker room. This is obviously because starting quarterback Kenny Pickett finds himself back in the concussion protocol meaning Rudolph could be called into action this week ahead of the team’s game with the Carolina Panthers.

Rudolph sounded very confident and professional and said he was ready to go if the team needed him. As the team’s third-string quarterback, practice reps aren’t easy to come by but Rudolph did joke he negotiated with Pickett and Mitch Trubisky to get one rep each practice.

But with how poorly Trubisky played last week, you have to wonder if the team might consider bumping Rudolph into the starting lineup if Pickett isn’t released from concussion protocol before the game.

Let us know in the comments who you think should start this week and don’t forget to vote in our poll.

Steelers vs Panthers: Big worries for this week’s game

The Panthers love to run the football and that should worry the Steelers.

Last week the Pittsburgh Steelers fell flat against the Baltimore Ravens and all but ended their season. But with four more games left on the schedule, the first up being the Carolina Panthers. The two teams share the same record but the Panthers seem to be playing with more momentum and actually have something left to play for. Here is what we are worried about this week.

Who should start at QB for the Steelers in Week 15?

Is it Mason Rudolph time?

With quarterback Kenny Pickett in the concussion protocol, there’s a good chance the Pittsburgh Steelers will have a new starting quarterback for its Week 15 game against the Carolina Panthers. But who will it be?

Mitch Trubisky had been serving as the backup quarterback since being benched in favor of Pickett after four starts at the beginning of the season. But Trubisky’s performance on Sunday was awful. Three interceptions, two of which were squarely on him, followed by a press conference where he didn’t seem overly concerned with how poorly he played.

But there is a guy who has been just sitting back, biding his time and his name is Mason Rudolph. The Steelers know what they have from Trubisky but the 2022 version of Rudolph is a complete unknown. With nothing left to play for is it time for Rudolph to earn his paycheck?
