Steelers LB T.J. Watt becomes third-fastest to 75 career sacks

T.J. Watt has 4.0 sacks in seven games this season.

With 1.5 sacks on Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt now has 76 sacks for his career. This was Watt’s 84 career game which makes him the third-fastest NFL player to have 75 career sacks.

The player to get to 75 sacks the fastest was Reggie White to did it in only 65 games while T.J.’s big brother J.J. is in second at 82 games.

Going into the season it seems like a foregone conclusion the younger Watt would top 75 sacks well ahead of his big brother’s mark but a partially torn pectoral sidelined him for nearly half of the season.

Watt’s 76 sacks are also good enough for third on the Steelers all-time list. He currently trails Jason Gildon who has 77.0 sacks and James Harrison who 80.5. Even after missing seven games, Watt still has plenty of opportunities to be the franchise sack leader by the end of the season.

Steelers cling to slimmest of playoff chances after win

The Steelers are not officially eliminated from the playoff race yet.

Going into Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers, the Pittsburgh Steelers knew that a loss would mathematically eliminate them from the AFC playoffs. This might have been something of a motivating factor for Pittsburgh as they came out and controlled the game and came out of Carolina with a 24-16 win.

This means, according to FiveThirtyEight, the Steelers are still technically in the hunt. What are their odds? Right now the Steelers have a 0.3 percent chance of making the playoffs. So you’re saying there’s a chance?

The only AFC team with a worse statistical chance than the Steelers are the Indianapolis Colts. They have a 0.2 percent chance. According to 538, the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans are the only AFC teams mathematically eliminated.

Will the Steelers streak of good fortune continue? Let us know in the comments if you think Pittsburgh will overcome the odds and make the playoffs.

Should the Steelers cut LB Marcus Allen?

The penalty by Marcus Allen was as bad as it gets.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

The Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a big 24-16 road win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. This one was close right to the wire and every misstep for both teams was magnified. No misstep was more blatant unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Steelers linebacker Marcus Allen late in the first half.

The penalty gave the Panthers new life on a drive that should have ended and turned into a field goal for Carolina. And it was made worse by the fact that it happened during a timeout when Allen felt for some reason it would be a good idea to saunter over to the Carolina huddle and run his yap to the opposing team.

After the play happened, Twitter lit up with tweets indicating the idiocy of what Allen did and many called for Allen to be cut on the spot and that he needs to find his own way home from Charlotte.

Is this one of those situations where head coach Mike Tomlin needs to set an example of unforced mistakes like this? We want to pass the question off to all of you. Let us know in the comments if you think the Steelers need to release Allen to remind the team how unacceptable this is.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin downplays idiotic penalty by Marcus Allen

Some penalties bother Mike Tomlin more than others.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

According to Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, he “didn’t have eyes” on linebacker Marcus Allen when he wandered over to talk trash to the Carolina Panthers during a timeout.

The unsportsmanlike conduct flag turned a stopped drive into a field goal for the Panthers. Pittsburgh is very fortunate the mistake didn’t figure into the final outcome of the game. According to Tomlin when asked what the impact was, he simply said, “three points”.

Allen easily had some of the most foolish penalties I’ve seen in a very long time. To go to the opposing team’s huddle during a timeout just to talk trash is dumb on an astronomical level. The fact Tomlin played it off when he is so hyper-critical of penalties at times is telling about Tomlin and his faux equality when it comes to the roster.

Fortunately, the Steelers beat the Panthers 24-16 and improve to 6-8 and the mistake didn’t cost Pittsburgh the win. Let us know in the comments what you thought of Allen’s penalty and his behavior.

Stifling defese and power run game pushes Steelers past Panthers

Pittsburgh improves to 6-8 on the season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers went with some old-school power football on Sunday and it worked. Pittsburgh held off a late rally by the Panthers and improve their record to 6-8 with a 24-16 win.

On offense, the Steelers utilized a methodical game plan that emphasized running the ball with Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren paired with a smothering defense that didn’t let the Panthers get the ground game going. Harris led the way with 86 rushing yards on 24 carries. 21 of the Steelers 24 points came on three rushing scores and the Steelers did a great job keeping things simple for quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Trubisky only threw for 179 yards but more importantly no interceptions.

Defensively, the Steelers looked as good as they have all season. They stuffed the Panthers normally efficient run game forcing them to throw the ball. Pittsburgh sacks Carolina quarterback Sam Darnold four times and held Carolina to a measly 21 yards rushing.

The Steelers now turn their attention to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Eve at home.
