Steelers HC Mike Tomlin takes exception to prediction about team

Mike Tomlin doesn’t appreciate being questioned about his team’s potential this season.

Few teams in the NFL have shown the type of consistency the Pittsburgh Steelers have under the leadership of head coach Mike Tomlin. Since Tomlin took over for the immortal Bill Cowher in 2007, the team hasn’t had a single sub-.500 season.

This was the point of emphasis sports writer Peter King emphasized when he spoke to Tomlin recently. When King noted that many people are wondering how good this team is and pondered if this would finally be the season that streak was broken, Tomlin took exception.

“You are hoping that we are mediocre,” Tomlin questioned. “Bring it on, bring it on. Quote me.”

Tomlin enters into his first regular season without future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger under center. This alone is enough to raise concerns whether or not the Steelers can keep pace in a very deep and talented AFC.

Will Tomlin’s streak continue this season? Even if the team can stay above .500 again in 2022, it might not be enough to make the playoffs. The Steelers have made the playoffs six times in the last 10 seasons but are in danger of missing them again this season with a new quarterback running the offense.

Steelers G Kevin Dotson predicts huge season for RB Najee Harris

Kevin Dotson says the offensive line just needs to get 25 percent better this season.

Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris was the workhorse of the offense with 1,200 yards on 307 carries. But guard Kevin Dotson believes that if the offensive line can just play 25 percent better, Harris can be a 2,000-yard rusher.

According to Dotson, Harris was having to break four or five tackles and if his offensive line could just block two of those guys, it could add 30 or 40 yards a game to Harris’ numbers. Keep in mind, last season Harris had 30 broken tackles on 307 touches so it might be something of an illusion to think he was doing it on every play.

What was actually happening is because of his offensive line as well as his struggles with reads and explsion was getting hit early and often on carries. But in more cases than not, Harris didn’t break a tackle and just went down.

The Steelers have invested heavily in the offensive line. So much so, it looks like Dotson, who started nine games in 2021 is going to find himself a backup in 2022.

On September 11, the Pittsburgh Steelers will take the field to kick off the 2022 NFL regular season. The biggest question is who will be the starting quarterback. The Steelers signed Mitch Trubisky as a free agent, already had experienced veteran Mason Rudolph but still spent a first-round pick on former Pitt star Kenny Pickett.

Personally, I can’t wait to see Pickett in pads running the Steelers offense. But my gut tells me that no matter how well Pickett plays, the team is going to opt for veteran experience at the start of the season.

But we are passing the question on to all of you. It’s not if Pickett SHOULD be the starter but will he be the starter? Case your vote in our poll and let us know.

Who will be the Steelers second-leading rusher in 2022?

Do the Steelers need to lighten the load on Najee Harris this season?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris has already gone on record as saying if he needs to touch the football 500 times for this team to win, he’s fine with that. Last season Harris had 307 rushes for 1,200 rushing yards.

By comparison, the second-leading rusher on the team in 2021 was running back Benny Snell Jr. He rushed for a paltry 98 yards on a meager 36 carries. No team in the league had such a massive disparity between one and two on the rushing list.

The question is, will that change this season? And even if it doesn’t, who will be the second-best rusher on the team. As I see it, it really comes down to three guys. Once again Snell is in line to be Harris’ primary backup despite showing nothing in his career to warrant the position.

Behind him is Anthony McFarland Jr. A speedy back who comes from Matt Canada’s system at the University of Maryland but has been a flop so far in the NFL.

The sleeper of this group is quarterback Mitch Trubisky. In 2018, Trubisky rushed for 421 yards for the Chicago Bears and never had fewer than 193 yards in four seasons. Canada’s offense is built around RPOs and Trubisky’s athleticism might make him an excellent dual-threat weapon.

Steelers RB Najee Harris says he’s good with 500 touches

How many touches will Najee Harris get in 2022?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]
Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris finished his rookie campaign with 381 touches for 1,667 total yards. After many games he was asked about his heavy workload and he dismissed any concerns. Harris never seemed to hit a rookie wall despite running behind a substandard offensive line.
This season, Harris is prepared to up his workload even more if it means it helps the team win. Harris was on the Rich Eisen Show and said he’s going to get 500 touches and he’s fine with it as long as the team is winning.
“I’ll get 500,” Harris said. “Listen, I didn’t have an issue with it. It was the media who had an issue with it. I told them every game, ‘If this is the way we’re winning, I can carry the load.’ I train to carry loads.”
In case you are wondering how many times a player has had 500 touches in a season, the answer is zero. The closest was Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back James Wilder. Back in 1984 he was the entire Bucs offense, rushing for 1,544 yards on 407 carries and caught 85 passes for 685 more yards.
Would Harris getting 500 touches be a good thing or a bad thing? Let us know in the comments below.
